Review: They don't come more authentic to the original craft than Novo Line: a man who uses nothing but pure 88/89 materials to make his compositions (even down to the floppy discs) While in some hands this could just be ridden as gimmick, the freeform jam-style natural state of each compositions a much deeper relationship and understanding with the tools - especially as the production hits with contemporary weight and textures. From the spaced out synthetic soul of "Shepard's Stone" to the slo-mo ghetto funk of "Three Forces", this genuinely is a unique document that allures and makes you consider how much potential we've lost in mankind's perpetually rapid technological race.

Review: The role Richard 'Nozinja' Mthetwa has played in the emergence of Sowetan music Shangaan Electro was first documented on that superb Honest Jon's compilation back in 2011. He is by all accounts a bit of a star so a round of applause to Warp for securing a fine album from Nozinja in the shape of Nozinja Lodge. Arriving soon after Mthewa collaborated with Tessela, this ten track album comes across as a slightly more polished take on the frenetic sound of Shangaan Electro, yet the core elements remain intact. High pitched vocals sourced from the community of Shangaan artists meet skipping lo-fi drum constructions and deliciously sweet melodies. An album to document and dominate the sunshine months.

Review: Having started his musical adventure in the mid-2000s as a maker of atmospheric techno, Manuel "Nuel" Fogliata switched focus in 2011 to deliver a debut album packed with odd downtempo shapes and crackling experimental electronics. This belated follow-up is, if anything, even more unusual, sitting somewhere between creeping drone textures, bleak industrial electronica, otherworldly ambience and dystopian white noise. There is flickering beauty to be found amongst the alien soundscapes - see the grandiose, sharpened drone of "Be Well", and the icy pulse of "Polaris" - but it's largely the more extreme moments that make the album such an intriguing listen.

Review: Born in Tehran and raised in Berlin, Nima Chatrsimab aka NYMA utilises his heritage and melting pot of influences on this record. The album is made in collaboration with vocalist Noisy Vibration, sitting somewhere between house, techno and electro - with honest pop sensibilities. He began his career around 2013 with early affiliations with the likes of Items & Things and Desolat, but has since released mainly his own imprint IT'S ALL IN YOU. It's definitely more of the bleepy and bumpy minimal house you've come to expect from him, with highlights such as the classic acid house vibe of "Instinctual Lover", the sweaty jackathon of "Body Worx" and the brooding darkwave vibe of "XX". Also, the gnarly EBM stomper "I Know You" is worth mentioning, making for a diverse yet cohesive collection of tracks. Chatrsimab has also been involved with product design - along with Magda he was responsible for a custom MIDI DJ controller with German manufacturer Faderfox a few years back.

Review: Although the finished product of Kantamoinen was officially released on Sahko back in 2005, Mika Vainio produced these tracks under the O moniker between 1999 and 2004. The music was recorded between Barcelona, Vienna and Berlin, but the sound is very much Vainio's own Finnish strain of noisy ambient. Boomkat has done us a real favour with this vinyl reissue, an album that has been on our wishlist for a long time and one that has pretty much single-handedly constructed the contemporary leftfield sound. That's because nothing is certain on this LP, no sounds are concrete or stable, but rather continuously morphing and evolving into otherworldly shapes. It's not really ambient, it's too delicate for noise, and it definitely isn't techno. It sits somewhere in between, in the vast and cavernous ocean that only Mika Vainio knows how to stir up. Highly recommended.

Review: Brandishing a dark sound that draws from electronics and string based instruments and adds a touch of the crepuscular to finish, the Lupine fancying OAKE have become a most suitable act for the current iteration of Karl O'Connor's Downwards label. First emerging on DNS early last year with the Offenbarung EP, the Berlin duo have subsequently committed another EP of claustrophobic electronics to the label as well as contributing to the rather fine Halha compilation. One of the final Downwards acts of 2014 is to issue Auferstehung, an 11 track debut album from OAKE which offers the pair more of a canvas to work with. With a title that translates as "resurrection" and a rather opaque theme that apparently "marks an end and a beginning at the same time," there is plenty that is open to interpretation about Auferstehung, and the album is largely free of any techno aspirations. Instead OAKE elect to coax you deeper into their web of sonic paranoia, which at times is a joyously crushing experience.

Review: Octachoron is a new project from ambient techno sort and V.C.V.S member Sandro Kozmanishvili and Bakur Metreveli. Sandro is an artist best known for his work under the Hanker alias. For the most part, Land of Meta - the debut Octachron release - is far more positive, melodious and obviously ear-pleasing than some of Kozmanishvili's previous work, serving up tracks that variously draw inspiration from the deep space ambient of Pete Namlook, the hypnotic "kosmiche" workouts of Tangerine Dream and Harmonia, 1980s new age, early '90s ambient techno explorations and, in the case of "Microwave Background", the twin out-there joys of dub techno and bubbly electronica. In other words, it's a very strong debut album.

Review: Former Kitty-Yo man Raz Ohara - AKA Danish singer/songwriter Patrick Rasmussen - has been very quite of late. He seemed to all but disappear from view following the release of sophomore album The Last Legend in 2001, something that still seems inexplicable given the quality of his unusual blends of leftfield electronica, sparse synth-pop and soft focus blue-eyed soul. Moksha, his first album in 13 years, finds him in fine form, offering up more druggy, woozy, near Balearic blends of wide-eyed electronics, shuffling rhythms, dubby ambience, folksy whimsy and his own impassioned vocals. It's an unusual but attractive sound, sitting somewhere between Balaearica, folktronica and abstract electronica.

Review: Pauline Oliveros' 1990s suite, Meditation For Orchestra, remains something of a triumph of experimental contemporary classical music. Here, the piece is re-created by Oliveros with Brussells' Musiques Nouvelles. It's as challenging, intriguing and inspiring as ever, with four distinct movements unfurling over 20 spellbinding minutes. On this album, it's accompanied by a more recent piece, the 25-minute Sound Geomotries For Chamber Orchestra, Expanded Instrument System And 5:1 Surround Sound System. The theory behind the piece is complex - effectively players' performances are processed in one of ten geometrical patterns, before being moved around the surround sound space - but the musical results are rarely less than breathtaking.

Review: Lancastrian musician Edmund Davie inaugurates the Alien Jams label with Parallel Lines Converge, a six track album of ramshackle electronics produced under his acclaimed OMMM guise. For those unfamiliar, Alien Jams began life back in 2011 as a Sunday afternoon show on Dalston radio station NTS hosted by Chloe Frieda with a focus on sonic obscurities and digging deep into early electronics that evidently bleeds into the direction of the freshly minted label. The label's description of Parallel Lines Converge as "a vast expanse of sonic no-man's land, all the while teetering on the brink of madness" rings true once you acquaint yourself with the six tracks here. If you like some of Ekoplekz's more outre experiments you'll love this!

Review: Having firmly established himself as one of the foremost experimental producers of the past decade with albums like Replica, Returnal, and Rifts, Daniel Lopatin here makes the logical move to electronic music bastion Warp Records. On first listen R Plus Seven is quite unlike any of his other records, largely eschewing the arpeggiated drones of his early work and sample-based collages of his last album for something much more vivid. Coming across like a combination of the emotive minimalism of Terry Riley and Steve Reich, and the hyperreality of James Ferraro's Far Side Virtual, R Plus Seven nevertheless stakes its own claim in the world of post-everything electronic music, combining delicate, introspective moods with shocking moments of recognisable sonic signification. Quite possibly Lopatin's best album to date.

Review: NYC sound artist and Software label boss Daniel Lopatin is back with his eagerly awaited eighth studio album. A self-proclaimed 'cybernetic rock' album influenced by his time touring with Nine Inch nails and Soundgarden in 2014. There's '"Ezra" which reaches near trance moments, the glitchy R&B digitalism of "Sticky Drama" which features a turn, mid track, reaching a level of mayhem comparable to Shapednoise. There is a moment of what we can only describe as 'indie trance' on the psychotic epic "Mutant Standard". Not forgetting the disturbed nu-gaze of "I Bite Through It", a real highlight on here. Commercial music was said to have influenced the album too. "Freaky Eyes" and "Lift" deconstruct pop music via sampling/resampling and loop points, adding Lopatin's own bizarre intricacies on top. He has undoubtedly become known as one of the most unique voices in electronic music today and this is further testament to his standing. Difficult listening for curious ears.

Review: Daniel Lapotin's recent rise has been remarkable. Further confirmation of his ascent to international IDM star status arrived via a round of recent interviews to promote Age Of, his 13th album, in which he expressed a desire to record soundtracks for Pixar movies and work with A-list R&B stars. Both of these disparate strands are explored on Age Of, alongside his love of fractured pop, intense and otherworldly electronica, and the kind of grainy, metal-influenced noise more often heard on the releases of one of the album's numerous guest musicians, Dominic Fenrow AKA Purient. One review described the set as bein like a "portfolio" and that's a fair comment; Age Of's greatest strength is the way that it shows off all sides of Lapotin's brilliant musical mind.
