Review: Molto is a new alias of Lorenz Lindner, arguably best known for his collaborations with Kassem Mosse under the Mix Mup guise. Versatile International Service, Lindner's surprise debut album as Molto, is not concerned with techno dancefloors, though. Instead, it offers a stripped-back, deep space take on ambient and downtempo electronica full of delay-laden field recordings, drowsy chords, and melodies that flit between bold beauty and alien creepiness. It makes for fascinating and enjoyable listening, as he progressively pushes towards the musical margins before pulling back with something more comforting. Odd and intriguing touches abound (think half-whispered scat vocal percussion, the sound of wind chimes being dropped, occasional nods to freestyle electronic jazz), ensuring a freshness often lacking in similarly minded full-lengths.

Review: Meredith Monk is a bit of a legend around certain circles. The multi-talented composer, dance performer and director has appeared in and been the main producer of a a whole world of material from the early 70s right up to this very day. While her most iconic work has perhaps been credited to the infamous ECM imprint, the artist's early work is still regarded as her most poignant and expressive. Key, her debut album from 1971, is a rarity in its original form, so this reissue from Tompkins Square has probably made the wish of many collectors come true! Not only is the album a piece of work to be lauded for its vision and originality, but it also ticks off many boxes and crosses many dots. Guided by Monk's mouse-like sounds in a sort of hyper-falsetto, the LP moves and shifts between different influences and styles; from ominous drones to more dreamy soundscapes, this is ambient cranked up to the max and given a good shouting at. Psychedelic and fearless, Monk prowls on in people's imagination.

Review: Most recently seen collaborating with vocalist Daniel O'Sullivan as Miracle on an album for Planet Mu, Steve Moore resurfaces in solo mode with a fine LP for the Spectrum Spools label. If you are a fan of the US synth underground, then you will undoubtedly own at least one record by Moore, whose solo output draws from John Carpenter and Tangerine Dream and nudges these influences into patient, evolving synth soundscapes that have positively healing effects. Nine sumptuous tracks long, Pangaea Ultima might be Moore's most ambitious set yet; themed around the super-continent of the same name that geologists have speculated will form in the next quarter of a billion years, the music occupies "an atemporal space" that is far removed from retro pastiche or obvious sci-fi tropes.

Review: Given his stated role as curator at the head of the 'non-stop' LIES, it makes perfect sense that Ron Morelli would look elsewhere to issue his debut album. Gravitating towards the Hospital Productions label run by Dominick 'Vatican Shadow' Fernow makes equal sense given their shared appreciation of noise, ambient and industrial music. Apparently the first of three planned releases on Hospital from Morelli, it's no little surprise that Spit arrives with much expectation. Spend some time with the eight tracks that make up the LP and you'll begin to understand why Morelli has used such words as pressure, monotony and stress to describe the motivating emotions behind Spit. The corrugated growl of "Modern Paranoia" and the broken metallic rhythms of "Crack Microbes" are considered highlights!

Review: London's mighty Honest Jon's Records - the primary home to the most obscure of African recordings - is more of an institution than a label or record shop. The imprint itself has been on fire since the early noughties thanks to a masterful selection of releases and remix series from world music outfits and contemporary electronic musicians alike. Berlin's dub techno doctor and mastering engineer, Moritz von Oswald, returns to the label with his current project, the Moritz Von Oswald Trio: Lagos icon Tony Allen takes care of the percussion, Max Loderbauer adds the electronic mystique alongside von Oswald himself, while Ricardo Villalobos takes care of the mixing duties. Well, that's quite an artillery already and as we're sure you already know, putting that lot together in a studio can only mean one thing: QUALITY. Dubby, percussive, minimalistic, psychedelic and totally recommended.

Review: Arguably all but the most dedicated fans will have long forgotten Most Significant Beat, a "post-industrial" early '90s techno project from former Clock DVA man Maurizio Martinucci and Esplendor Geonetrico's Saverio Evangelista. This surprise vinyl compilation tells the story of their previously CD-only late '90s work, throwing in a previously unheard workout - the angular rhythms and Sheffield bleeps of "Geometric State" - for good measure. For the most part, the material has aged remarkably well, and sits somewhere between the forthright madness of Autechre, the spacey techno of Detroit-via-Frankfurt (see "Amy Tekno") and the buzzing intensity of Surgeon.

Live In Seattle (LP + MP3 download code)
Cat: FUR 050LP. Rel: 04 Nov 15
  1. Live In Seattle (15:33)
  2. Live In Seattle (17:30)
Review: Two thirds of Magic Mountain High team up on this masterpiece. Its David Moufang aka Move D and Jordan Czamanski aka Jordash on a live performance recorded in Seattle in May 2013. In the words of Further Records: "It was the kind of set during which you say to yourself, "I hope to hell somebody's recording this." Side A provides a highlight of the first half of the set and definitely the most experimental part. Gentle xylophone vibes are soon joined by snarling monosynth leads, transitioning into suspenseful and cinematic soundtrack territory with sombre and immersive pads. It all gels together in a frenzy, fuelled by rusty percussion and swirling synth textures. Side B starts off grumbling away beneath chimes and what sounds like a theremin until gradually the acid begins setting in. The 303 builds to an epic climax over several layers of percussion and rich strings, gradually deconstructing, layer upon layer into delay. You can even hear the rapturous applause from the audience and one ecstatic punter bellow out an "Aww yeeah!"

Review: Following up the runaway success of Crooks & Lovers was always going to be a daunting task for Mount Kimbie, and they've wisely taken their time to come back with a step forwards from a sound which gave rise to the more folky strains of the dubstep aftermath. Sounding fresh and invigorated on their LP for Warp, Kai Campos and Dominic Maker have built on their love of shoegaze indie and brought their component parts into a clearer vision where they used to hide them behind heavy editing and microsampling. There are plenty of reminders that this is a Kimbie record, not least in the winsome melodies that shape the LP, but the duo have succeeded in shearing away their self-conscious trickery to write full-bodied songs that hit on first listen, rather than ten spins down the line.

Review: Since first emerging on Hotflush at the tail end of the last decade, Mount Kimbie has navigated the post-dubstep landscape better than almost any other act. It says something about their transformation into hard-to-define electronica heavyweights that Love What Survives, their third full-length and second for Warp manages to be both surprising (there are subtle nods towards titans of post-punk pop and rock, for starters) and exactly what you'd expect. They're masters of fusing disparate styles, sounds, textures and beat patterns into beautiful hybrid shapes, and this kind of 21st century fusion is evident throughout. Naturally, there are a few notable guest appearances dotted throughout, with James Blake's two contributions amongst the album's many highlights.

Review: Even by the increasingly out-there standards of the Greta Cottage Workshop crew, this album is delightfully out-there. Designed to evoke the experience of a "cold war border crossing through the eyes of a child," Bernau 4 started life as a series of foreboding, chilly and haunting field recordings made during a trip to Berlin back in 2013. These recordings were then handed over to regular contributor Max Trukker, who chopped, sliced and diced them into crackly, strangely rhythmic and notably bleak shapes. The seven tracks sit somewhere between Chris Watson style soundscapes, uncomfortable ambience and stripped-back dub techno, with Trukker emphasizing the atmospheric nature of the source material throughout.

Review: Given that Mike Paradinas initially launched Planet Mu in 1995 to release his own music under the u-Ziq alias, it seems fitting that he's marking the label's 400th release with a brand new album of his own (his first for two years, fact fans). Challenge Me Foolish is, for the most part, a surprisingly jaunty and melodious affair, with only a handful of forays into mutant IDM-jungle fusion and the kind of distorted, full-throttle madness that used to be his forte. Elsewhere, we're treated to imaginative, colourful and emotive electronica that variously touches on ambient, jazz, hip-hop, Jean-Jacques Perrey style cheeriness and, most intriguingly, cinematic soundtracks. With 15 tracks squeezed into 70 minutes, it's a schizophrenic and fast-paced affair, but one that entertains from start to finish.

Review: Nearly two decades into his recording career, techno purist Oscar Mulero shows no signs of slowing down. While this may be his first full-length excursion for three years, he's released countless club-ready singles since. Perfect Peace, his fifth album in total, is arguably his most diverse and interesting set to date. It sees the Spaniard expanding his horizons, combining off-kilter dancefloor excursions - think Autechre or the noise-soaked lo-fi antics of the L.I.E.S camp, rather than dark and pulsating peak-time fare - with spooky IDM, angular electro, clandestine ambient cuts and moody soundscapes seemingly inspired by film soundtracks. It's a wonderfully evocative mixture, all told, and in our opinion stands head and shoulders above his other albums.

Review: It's not hard to admire the sheer bloody-mindedness that drives Tadd Mullinix's label venture, Bopside. In between the recent Charles Manier album and the upcoming JTC long-player - a contender for house album of the year - comes Skein. Produced under his birth name, it's a deeply experimental three-tracker. The title track is a succession of screeches, howls and white noise blasts, while "Hadopelagic Chime" sees the US producer map out a series of soundscapes against a low tempo backdrop. Closing track "Bridge Out" is a succession of abstract clatters, noisy interference and scattered dissected FX. God knows what demographic Mullinix is hoping to a appeal to - if any.

Review: Following up on the material reissued via Music From Memory, here is a reissue of Roberto Musci and Giovanni Venosta's sought after ambient masterpiece from 1987. The album realises sound from electric, acoustic and documentary source, taking ethnic field recordings (from Africa, Indonesia, Asia, India) as the thematic centre. While studying guitar and saxophone in his hometown of Milan, Musci developed a deep fascination for non-western music and set out to travel across India, Asia and Africa, which he would do extensively between 1974-1985. Born 1961, Giovanni Venosta is an Italian composer who specializes in collages of samples (mainly ethnic music), found sounds, live improvisation. He has also composed film soundtracks.
