Review: If you happen to be into distorted, electronic future dub then Hey O Hansen is kind of like the holy grail. Along other deviants like Tapes, Helmut Erler and Thomas Wolf specialise in the contemporary essence of dub, taking all the tiny details of the '70s movement by pioneers like King Tubby, and condensing them down into experimental sound sketches. Sno Dub is the duo's sixth album since L'Elephant Cruel back in 2000, and it comes on their own Hey Rec imprint. "You", "Got", and "Cold" are three sublime pieces of pseudo dub that break down with each new turn of the space echo, and "If", "You", "Don't", and "Dance" on the flip are a perfect continuation of this original and explorative form of digi reggae. It's a difficult one to describe, and that's what makes it all the more excellent. Highly recommended.

Review: Heather Gabel and Seth Sher, long active members of Chicago's underground "DIY scene", first joined forces as Hide in 2014. Since then, they've released a smattering of cassettes and 12" singles that put their spin on "sample-based, post-industrial" experimentation. As Castration Anxiety proves, their trademark sound owes much to the pioneers of the industrial sound - you can hear elements of SPK's dense percussion, the madness of Test Department and the scattergun drum machine assault of 1980s Cabaret Voltaire - but retains its' own unique voice. This is as much to do with the duo's wide range of influences - think Nine Inch Nails, DJ Spooky style "illbient" and gritty post-punk pop - as Gabel's inspired vocals.

Review: Over the last few years, the team behind the Moog Sound Lab has encouraged a range of forward-thinking electronic musicians to come and jam on its obscure (and very rare) Modular 55 System prototype. The latest edition in the ongoing series of session recordings sees intergalactic Afro-futurist Hieroglyphic Being treat us to The Replicant Dream Sequence - an eight-part modular electronic treat that moves from drowsy, surprisingly colourful ambience ("Seq 1") and foreboding deep space soundscapes ("Seq 3"), to dreamy electronica ("Seq 4") and hypnotic EBM (standout "Seq 6", which also features his distinctive spoken vocals), via blistering techno ("Seq 8", "Seq 2"). Unlike many of his own releases, the sound is sparkling and crystal clear, allowing the quality of his compositions and arrangements to shine through.

Review: Following turns on labels like Creme Organization, Rvng Intl. and Further Records to Bio Rhythm, Bedouin Records and Sequencias, among many others, it feels like only a matter of time before Jamal Moss has graced pretty much every label worth talking about. Following his Cosmic Bebop ?LP on his own Mathematics Recordings, Moss, under his adored Hieroglyphic Being alias, surfaces on Ninja Tune sub Technicolour. The Disco's Of Imhotep is a bright, distorted and colourful affair which harbours its own trademark, synthetic chimes, kicked off wonderfully with the sweetly tonal number "The Shrine Of The Serpent Goddess". Rather than pulling together tracks at random, the album overall sounds like something that's been crafted as a whole, and while drums and distortion may tear away at speakers cones the world over, it's the melodies of this record, annihilated or otherwise, that really make The Disco's Of Imhotep one of a kind.

Review: The Blackest Ever Black posse make an interesting foray into the ever booming soundtrack market with this issue of aptly grim source material. The Red Riding television series followed a range of grisly characters and scenarios around Yorkshire in the 70s and 80s, set to a backdrop of serial killings. Celebrated violinist and composer Dickon Hinchcliffe's score to accompany the second part of the trilogy is an engrossing one, as haunting and immersive as the subject undoubtedly demands. From chilling incidentals to lighter intervals the music is never anything less than breathtaking, and undoubtedly deserves this standalone release.

Review: Earlier this year, Midori Hirano joined forces with fellow Japanese producer Ytamo on the cassette-only Time Unbox, an intriguing exploration of ambient, neo-classical and music concrete. Minor Planet sees Hirano go solo once more, laying down a collection of atmospheric, otherworldly pieces that sit somewhere between contemporary classical movements, and deep space ambient. There's naturally much beauty to be found throughout, from the twinkling pianos, quiet chords and horizontal textures of "Two Kites", and the claustrophobic electronics of "Night Traveling", to the Pete Namlook style spaciousness of "Haiyuki", and the cosmic shimmer of closer "Rolling Moon".

Review: It's been seven years since Holden's debut album The Idiots Are Winning was released on his own Border Community imprint, and in that time new material has been scarce to say the least. Thankfully, The Inheritors was well worth the wait; produced with a combination of Holden's extensive analogue modular system and his own self-coded software, the album takes in influences as wide as The KLF, Elgar, ceilidh music, pentatonic folk scales and ancient pagan rituals, with each track recorded in one take with no overdubs. Border Community cohort Luke Abbott's Holkham Drones album would be the closest comparison, but even that superb record doesn't come close to the sprawling marvel that is The Inheritors, with highlights like the jazz sax of "The Caterpillar's Intervention" and twisting analogue techno of "Gone Feral" coming thick and fast.

Review:  Last year, Border Community heavyweights James Holden and Luke Abbott took part in a special performance to mark the 80th birthday of minimalist legend Terry Riley. Here, the extended pieces they performed that night are finally released. Holden's 46-minute piece - performed with tabla player Camilo Tirado, and created by writing a special sequencer for his modular synthesizer - is little less than an exotic, slowly evolving masterpiece, up there with the American composer's finest synthesizer works. Abbott's "555Hz", on the other hand, is an altogether deeper and more languid affair, but no less enthralling. Built around droning, drawn-out chords and subtle melodic shifts, it bubbles away attractively like the greatest intergalactic ambience.

Review: Since debuting with the sublime With U last summer, Holy Other has become one of the Tri Angle roster's most compelling figures, and that rarest of things - an anonymous producer that is more than the sum of the hype surrounding them who is able to imbue their music with genuine personality. Though his sound is initially typical of the Aaliyah sampling Burial wannabes that are currently plaguing the internet, Holy Other manages to add extra layer of gothic drama to proceedings. Though the beats are there, they limp rather than skip (such as on opener "(W)here"), R&B tropes are inverted to create a ghostly frame draped over a skeletal structure ("Inpouring"). R&B isn't the only influence however; "Past Tension" is chopped and screwed 80s pop, while the heart wrenching chords and rumbling strings of "In Difference" could easily have come from Mogwai's Rock Action.

During the duo's mid-1980s collaboration, performance artist Homler channeled the spirit of a character she'd created called Breadwoman, delivering bizarre vocals - half sung, half spoken, in some kind of made-up dialect - she referred to as "divine speech". These were worked into musical pieces by experimental composter Moshier, who utilized cheap drum machines, battered analogue synthesizers, and chamber music players to create hypnotic, otherworldly tracks that remain hugely charming. The story of their creation and performance, told in great detail in the accompanying liner notes, is also fascinating.

  8. Immunity
Review: We never quite know what to expect from leftfield explorer Jon Hopkins, but we know it will be worth a listen. Immunity, his fourth solo album (he's recorded two others, one with Brian Eno and another with King Creosote), doesn't disappoint. Rooted in shuffling, forthright and occasionally off-kilter rhythms, it melds hazy, late night atmospherics and subtle melodies with intense, droning chords, woozy electronics and all manner of inventive noises. It's a blend that repeatedly pays dividends, from the mournful pianos and jumpy rhythms of "Breathe This Air', to the crystalline, soundscape ambience of "Abandon Window", and glitchy wonkiness of "Form By Firelight".

  8. Luminous Beings (11:56)
  9. Recovery (4:57)
Review: Having taken time out to travel the world and experience new things (including psychedelic substances in California), John Hopkins planned to make Singularity, his ninth album, "a sonic ecosystem that starts and ends on the same note". He soon got frustrated by these limitations, so instead just laid down a fluid and hazy album that combines his usual luscious, ambient electronics with a variety of sparse, heavy and off-kilter rhythms. While undeniably laidback in parts, the album also boasts a number of foreboding techno workouts and uses a wider palette of instrumental sounds than we've come to expect (including some fine strings and his own intricate piano playing). The resultant set is rather impressive, all told, and while not quite a "sonic ecosystem", it's certainly an enjoyable journey.
