Review: Andrea Noce aka Eva Geist is back with his second album to date, and what clearly makes for a magical companion to 2016's comparatively murkier Aquator System cassette. Noce returns via Sascha Mambo's macadam Mambo imprint, unleashing a flurry of outsider sonics and no-wave vibes thanks to this new Desfan LP. The nine tracks glide with pace and style, ranging form the docile bleeps and pseudo beats of tunes like "Electronic Tribalism" to relatively more 'dance-friendly' tunes like "Prologo" or "Nigredo". It's hard to put our finger on what makes Noce's music so singular, but it must have something to do with the artist's fascination with the Levant - a distant yet perceptible vibe that seeps through all of these tunes.

Review: Originally released on Point Music, Philip Glass' 1993 masterpiece is now available on vinyl for the first time. Having always been reissued as a CDR, the wonderful folks over at Music On Vinyl have remastered this three-tracker for turntable use, on 180 G format, of course, and it was about time somebody did so! The three works are deep, luscious and glide between neo-classical and avant-garde with utter ease. Our cherry pick has to be "Subterraneans" for its delicate waves of strings and general feeling of peace. This is THE soundtrack EP and it's a shame it has yet to be used...

Review: Music On Vinyl return with another blinding reissue by composer Philip Glass! Heroes Symphony, or sometimes referred to as Symphony No.4, was created by Glass back in 1996 as an accompaniment to David Bowie's Heroes album. It's not necessarily one of his better known works but it contains that familiar Glassian mystique and musical freedom which characterises so many of his classical productions.

Review: Aside from a recent outing under the DJ Jenifa name on Mule Musiq, it's been a while since we last heard any new music from the Essex man known as Gold Panda. Three years on from his last LP, the Ghostly Intl-released Half Of Where You Live, Gold Panda resurfaces on a new label in City Slang with his third album, Good Luck And Do Your Best. This eleven-track adventure is directly inspired by several trips through Japan (indeed GP was originally there with the intention of making a documentary) and have been slimmed down from over 18 months of recordings. Some limber-fingered usage of sample flipping is present from the off as Gold Panda presents a delightfully off-kilter brand of slumped instrumental beatscapes that run the range of tempos and moods.

Review: When they first hit the big time a couple of years back, Golden Teacher reacted grumpily to questions about when they might release a debut album, even suggesting they may not bother. We're happy that they changed their minds, because No Luscious Life is really rather good. It's typical of the Glaswegian sextet's impossible-to-pigeonhole sound, offering a range of distinctively spacey, dubbed-out and percussion rich tracks that variously touch on post-punk disco, skewed electrofunk, freshly baked dub, African drum tracks, spaced-out boogie, experimental electro-jazz and much more besides. It arguably boasts a few more "pop" moments than we've come to expect, though these still come doused in epic amounts of tape echo and dub delay.

Review: Since debuting under the Gomorra alias back in 2015, Franco Caggese has proved more than adept at delivering rock solid techno workouts shot through with the clandestine ideology of industrial funk and the lo-fi fuzz of analogue hardware. As you'd expect, this debut album sees him attempt to expand his musical horizons a little. So while there are moments of pitch-black, functional fuzziness (see opener "The Saga Begins", the creepy and foreboding "Ghetto" and the kickdrum-driven madness of "Submission 2"), it's not all wall-to-wall rhythmic bleakness. Check, for example, the seductive ambience of "Ambient01", the drifting, sun-kissed electronics and rubbery grooves of "Good Morning" and the deep and sensual "St Clair".

Review: You'll probably already be acquainted with the name Manuel Gottsching - and you should be - but just in case you aren't, he was a pillar of Ash Ra Tempel's golden years and, among other of his contemporaries, was a pioneer of the genre that is often dubbed 'new age'. E2-E4 was a 1984 solo album from the man, and is certainly up there with the likes of Steve Reich's best minimal material, although it has often gone relatively unnoticed. MG Art from Germany have done us the favour of reissuing this monumental release, and we're utterly awestruck by how contemporary and fresh this album still is. In fact, one could say that a tune like "31'38" is the basis for the sound championed by new labels like Mood Hut, where a significantly danceable beat is laid above placid, warm harmonics. Similarly, "23'00" is just as balearic and phased out but, once again, we just can't believe how great this music still sounds more than thirty years later. Warmly recommended.

Cat: IDBQ 3001. Rel: 30 Nov 15
  1. E2 E4
  2. E2 E4 (DVD)
Review: Over the last couple of years, kosmiche legend Manuel Gottsching has been traveling the World, performing live renditions of his 1984 album, E2E4 - a glistening, synthesizer-and-guitar led chunk of mood-enhancing minimalism that has long been considered a Balearic classic (assisted, some would say, by its' use in Sueno Latino's eponymous 1989 Italian house hit). E2E4 Live In Japan offers an audio recording of one of these performances, with Gottsching re-creating the majesty of his original album with the use of synthesizers, guitars and - presumably - a computer running Ableton Live. It's impeccable, of course, and comes backed with a DVD containing a film of the very same performance.

Review: With Claire Boucher now very much a bonafide pop star following last year's album Art Angels for 4AD, it makes for an interesting exercise to chart the progression of her self-styled multimedia project Grimes by revisiting her previous albums. Kudos to Arbutus then for presenting this timely reissue of the second Grimes album Halfaxa. Originally released on the Montreal label in 2010 - and later licenced by the ace UK operation Lo Recordings - Halfaxa arrived with Boucher still very much developing her template for odd pop perfection but you can see some of the ideas executed to such delight on 2011's Visions were formed here.

Review: When Groeni debuted back in 2012, it was a solo project helmed by Kiwi producer Alexander Green. On this ear-pleasing debut album, Groeni has become a trio with the addition of new permanent members Mike Isaacxs and James Paul. From start to finish, the set bristles with intriguing ideas, imaginative arrangements and blissed-out, soft-focus vocals. Rhythmically, the trio takes cues from IDM, post-techno and experimental electronica, smothering their pulsating but gentle beats with woozy electronics and trippy, almost psychedelic guitars. It's a formula that's exceedingly hard to pigeonhole, though some of the resultant songs do share a similar sonic space to late period Radiohead and Thom Yorke's beguiling solo work.
