Review: British IDM legend Mark Fell (SND/Sensate Focus) returns with Intra, featuring a series of complex and hypnotic polyrhythms performed with Portuguese collective Drumming Grupo De Percussao. Fell sent instructions to the four acoustic drummers via electronic triggers, which were then relayed through headphones. They performed on the Sixxen metallophone system: a set of six microtonally tuned instruments (to an unequal 21-note scale built from 1/4 and 1/3 tones) originally conceived by Iannis Xenakis in 1976. Commissioned by Serralves Museum in Porto, Portugal.

  1. I Just Want You To Stay (17:59)
  2. Wouldn't Wanna Be Swept Away (20:01)
Review: It was about time that someone struck up a partnership between Fennesz and Jim O'Rourke, two respected names in the ambient kingdom and masters of the art form. "I Just Want You To Stay" is crest-fallen, a track dragged forwards by lonesome, dissolving synths that seem to melt and recompose with each new turn, making this an abstract song with plenty of momentum. "Wouldn't Wanna Be Swept Away", on the other hand, is less sculptured and loose around the edges, managing to retain movement and shape through its chirping bundle of bleeps and diluted melodies. You wouldn't expect anything less from these two.

Review: Ladies and Gentlemen, you're in for a real treat this week. You might know, or even recognise, Bernard Fevre for the infamous Black Devil Disco Club LP, a timeless disco deviation that has been so important to the development of electronic dance music that Aphex Twin first reissued it on Rephlex. Fevre has always been a mysterious character, but we weren't aware that he possessed a whole vault of unreleased music from the late 1970's. Much like the cult Disco Club LP, Orbit Ceremony is a diverse and singular piece of work, with tracks that span from coldwave to synth-pop way before they were even coined as genres, and we thank Medical Records from the bottom of our hearts for having convinced Fevre to resurface this long-lost material. We know you're intrigued and can't wait to hear this dopeness, but we won't spoil it for you - we can't possibly describe this visionary work with mere words. Look, if you like house, techno, leftfield, disco, or even industrial, this is what you should be listening to, because this is where it all starts. What a release - this is super-duper recommended!

Review: Suspense is Bernard Roger Fevre's first solo album and the original release came early on in Musax's - mythical French label dealing in outsider electronics - catalogue. Unlike Cosmos 2043, Suspense isn't based around the concept of space but is instead a work which contains no conceptual boundaries. It does, however, also feature plenty of wavey electronic melodies and eerie soundscapes such as "Skeese" or "What Happens". Given its 1975 release date, there's also noticeable levels of funk in there, namely on the fuzzy "Mister Green", a get-down kinda number with one hell of a bassline and some killer sonics. Cop it just for that..!

Review: There's always been something rather special about King Britt's ability to effortlessly switch musical focus between projects and aliases. Contrast, for example, the retro-soul giddiness of Sylk 130, the electronic polyrhythms and heavy bruk of Oba Funke, and the trippy electronic darkness of his work under the baffling Fhloston Paradigm pseudonym. This debut album under that alias - on the back of a handful of singles a few years back - is predictably magical, mixing spaced-out textures and stargazing synths with off-kilter rhythms, loose jazz beats and Detroit-inspired grooves. Dark and atmospheric, with a touch of the Jeff Mills about it (certainly conceptually, if not aesthetically), The Phoenix makes for mesmerizing listening from start to finish.

Review: Unicursal Hexagram, the debut album from Brooklyn-based experimentalist Jahiliyya Fields remains a highlight of the L.I.E.S. discography some three years after its release. The left-of-centre synthesizer soundscapes, droning textures and experimental explorations were astounding at the time, and it's an album you can revisit now and still uncover new depths. On Chance Life, his second album for L.I.E.S., Jahiliyya Fields changes tack a little with the 11 tracks a tad closer to the dancefloor. While there are still out-there moments (including a bizarre spoken word cut), for the most part the album pairs his throbbing synthesizers and crusty electronics with dense techno grooves, psychedelic tribal rhythms and humid box jams.

Review: The second of three rather dashing looking Minimal Wave releases this week throws the focus on the early 80s work of Bristol duo Five Times of Dust. Minimal Wave's interest in Robert Lawrence and Mark Philip's work together was first revealed back in 2011 with the inclusion of their composition "Computer Bank" on The Hidden Tapes compilation, whilst Veronica Vasicka's label hinted at a more substantial Five Times Of Dust offering earlier this year with the cassette reissue of The Dadacomputer, Phillips and Lawrence's debut release together. Smile with the Eyes is that promised extensive reappraisal of Five Times of Dust, drawing from a large pool of unreleased material recorded by Robert Lawrence and Mark Philips between 1982 and 1986, which fully justifies the label's description as "perfectly formed electronic curiosities". Cuts like "The Single Off The Album" and "Ethnic Bomb" demand further investigation.

Review: An incandescent sonic spectacle drawing on both members and influences from the stratosphere via Dubai and South-East London, Flamingods have set themselves apart from most else which surrounds them with a rhythmically driven sound informed by both hedonistic fury and wide-eyed abandon. 'Majesty' is the band's most concise and focused effort to date, without losing the intensity and extra-dimensional flourishes by which they've made their name. Kicking their sound into space like a pop-tinged version of Boredoms or an Animal Collective without the dippy self-indulgence, Flamingods here set their stall out as modern technicolour psychonauts to be reckoned with.

Review: Since releasing his first Floating Points record back in 2009, Sam Shepherd has constantly surprised. Predictably, he's done it again with Reflections: Mojave Desert, an album created from impromptu recordings of his live band made during a visit to Joshua Tree National Park. Inspired by their surroundings and the natural environment, Shepherd's ensemble have created a five-track set - and accompanying Super 8 film, shot and edited by the band's traveling visual artist - that's as atmospheric as anything the producer has released to date. While a unique proposition with its own distinctive vibe, the tracks variously touch on ambient, new age, spiritual jazz, woozy electronica, post-rock and the kind of Stockhausen-inspired experimentalism explored on Ragnar Grippe's recently reissued "Sand".

Review: Pitched somewhere between the gritty, propulsive beats of Los Angeles, and the exploratory jazz of Cosmogramma, Flying Lotus's fourth album, Until The Quiet Comes is arguably the most delicate record he's ever produced. Described as a "collage of mystical states, dreams, sleep and lullabies", it steers away from bigger moments, choosing instead to present an understated patchwork of breezy jazz samples, dusty hip-hop beats smeared vocals seemingly inspired by DMT hallucinations. While previous efforts were wildly futuristic at times, Until The Quiet Comes is confidently classicist - and seals Flying Lotus's position as one of our generation's visionary producers.

Review: Arriving with some truly mind bending artwork from controversial guro manga artist Shintaro Kago, the new Flying Lotus album You're Dead! Is quite alot to take in upon first listen. Some nineteen tracks deep, Steven Ellison uses all the available space to draw you deep into the afterlife as he sees it, veering through heavily psychedelic jazz passages and next level beat explorations that demand you pay full attention. The iconic Herbie Hancock leads a high profile cast of contributing artists to Fly Lo's fifth studio LP and his most ambitious to date with Kendrick Lamar, Captain Murphy, Snoop Dogg, Angel Deradoorian, Thundercat and Niki Randa also adding to what is a transcendental listening experience.

Review: After the "next level jazz shit" of Cosmogramma, you'd forgive Flying Lotus for a taking a time out and maybe hit some clubs in LA to find his next Brainfeeder signee. Instead he's spent the past few months scouring the inner workings of his clearly impressive musical brain to deliver Pattern & Grid World, seven tracks of expansive machine funk futurism. Commencing with the hazy mist of psychedelic soul synths flourishes and intricate beat patterns that is "Clay" Ellison demonstrates an ever increasing array of beat poetry. "Kill Your Co-Workers" marries tinny drum and bass programming with an ever expanding opulence of joyous melodies whilst "Pie Face" drops outer galactic grime syncopation over kaleidoscopic bass patterns. "Time Vampires" could soundtrack the astro travelling Lord Quas referred to on the classic Madlib album The Unseen whilst "Jurassic Notion/M Theory" splays wonked out afro percussion over belly level schizoid bass lines. The final rhythmic jolt of "Physics For Everyone" replete with head first plunges into industrial bass makes this a bewitching complement to Ellison's highly lauded album.

Review: Julian House has been an integral member of Jim Jupp's Ghost Box since the imprint's inception back in the early 00s and in fact, it would be fair to say that the man's studio efforts have helped to shape the label into the beast that it is today. Famously known as being the designer for artists like Primal Scream, House's The Focus Group project is what he should be remembered for first and foremost; not only does Stop Motion Happening offer 25 tunes in all, but what is truly special about this LP is its sheer diversity and pure experimentation throughout. We're not talking about regurgitating some outsider business here, on the contrary, this man's music is one of the only things sitting on our charts that sounds truly singular in every way. From the choice of instruments to way they've been moulded, House has a knack for the bizarre and the utterly human. It's a depiction of people, places and things; beautiful, frightening and revealing all at the same time.

Review: As time goes by, attention spans get shorter and more ideas have been squeezed dry, Julien House is becoming more and more like the hero we need but really don't deserve. Spinning turbo yarns quicker than you put your socks on, Focus Group presents concepts and contexts that have never been created or even considered before. The clue is in the title Stop Motion Happening feels animated and visual as we bounce from the swashbuckling beats of "The Brand Spanking" to the quaint 50s bad dream loopery of "Sir John Pepper" and all scenes in between. Some dwell for a moment, some are blink and miss but all are enthralling and draw you into a parallel universe you didn't know existed.

Review: You'd be forgiven for not knowing much about Fondation, a husband-and-wife duo that released a trio of obscure, hard-to-find cassettes between 1980 and '83. Fortunately, Bureau B is here to help. The Hamburg imprint has put together this excellent retrospective, which showcases best of all three sought-after tapes. What shines through from start to finish is the pairs distinctive style, which casually joined the dots between experimental ambient, kosmiche, avant-garde synth-rock, American minimalism (think Pat Metheny's performance of Steve Reich's Electric Counterpoint run through distortion pedals) and drowsy, beat-less psychedelia. It's an arresting and hugely enjoyable collection, all told, and one that should appeal to anyone with an appetite for DIY ambient and lo-fi exotica.
