Review: Pilotwings' Louis E Bola sets out on a brand new expedition with this stunning new odyssey Eiger Drums Propaganda. With a crew ranging from Arthur Tempo to Sound Of Duty Free via Akino Karma, the journey is as turbulent as it is singular. The ambient washes and faux demonism of "Climb", the vital twinkles of "Le Chien Est Parti", the beastly swampy textures of "Summit" and the cascading chimes and twangs of the dreamy finale "La Fin Non-Triste" all comprise to create an immersive, weird and beguiling trip. Ready to ascend?

Review: Felix K and DB1's Elemnt project is an intriguing prospect. This debut album builds on the promise of previous releases by showcasing the duo's hard to pigeonhole style over three weighty slabs of wax. Stylistically, their dark, intense and often obtuse incorporates elements of dark ambient, modular techno, experimental D&B, minimalist aesthetics, metallic IDM (think Autechre, for starters), post-dubstep heaviness, experimental noise, and even a dash of dub techno. It's a mixture that makes for interesting and largely enjoyable listening, with highlights worming their way into your consciousness rather than leaping up off the wax.

Review: It's hard to keep accurate tabs on Dark Entries this year, such is the rate at which the West Coast label is reissuing material and the range of music covered. This latest archival endeavour finds Josh Cheon's label once again tapping from the sizeable well marked Tom Ellard/Severed Heads, having previously reissued the Australian band's classic Dead Eyes Opened. This an altogether rarer proposition however, with 80s Cheesecake a rather special reissue of solo material Ellard committed to tape in the early '80s, specifically the self release 80s Cheesecake and Snappy Carrion. Some of the material has been collected for reissue before, most notably on Vinyl-On-Demand's exhaustive Adenoids 1977-1985 boxset, but this Dark Entries edition presents a more affordable insight into some music that still sounds way ahead of it's time some 30 years on.

Review: Between 1969 and 1971, Guatemalan Emilio Aparicio recorded some of the earliest electronic music to come out of South America - then promptly exchanged most of the copies of the five private press seven-inch singles he pressed up for bottles of wine. This fine compilation aims to tell Aparicio's story properly for the first time, gathering together all of his released compositions from the period in freshly re-mastered form. Aparicio was one of the first owners of a Moog synthesizer in South America, and it's the sound of Robert Moog's pioneering machine that comes to the fore throughout. Of course, since Aparicio and patron Roberto Alburach were heavy LSD users during the period, much of the music is wonderfully trippy and spacey, sitting somewhere between the stern work of early minimalist synthesizer composer Morton Subotnick and Pierre Henry's more melodious and tongue-in-cheek works of the same period.

Review: James Ginzburg and Paul Purgas are getting crustier and more experimental with every passing year. Recur, their fourth full-length excursion, is decidedly fuzzy and discordant. Seemingly intent on pushing experimental electronics to its limits, the formerly Bristol-based duo serve up a challenging but rewarding set based almost entirely around half-rhythms, white noises, drones, feedback and hissing atmospherics. It's spooky, intense stuff, all told, occasionally enlivened by sparse, pared-down concoctions that sound like a smacked out take on Autechre. But for all the bleak, out-there sounds, Recur is strangely involving, due in no small part to its immersive nature.

Review: It's been four years since experimentalists Emptyset last dropped a full-length excursion. In that time, their reputation has only grown, thanks in part to a string of impressive live performances. The fact that Thrill Jockey is releases Borders, their fifth album, confirms their ascent to the higher echelons of experimental electronica. This time round, they've slightly tweaked their approach. As well as their usual analogue sound design "processes", they've also made use of two instruments they built themselves - one a six-stringed zither-like instrument, and the other a drum. This, combined with their increased confidence in their live set-up, means that Borders has a looser, more immediate feel than some of their previous work. It's a hugely enjoyable development.

Review: In typical Soundway fashion, our favourite outer national label is back with a special new album from the depths of Africa's Uganda. The musician in question, Jesse Hackett, is an Englishman who decided to embark on a long and life-defining journey into the heart of Africa to arrive at the source of it all. Tagged as 'post-modern African psychedelia', Ennanga Vision isn't just an album, it's a distinctive vibe - an approach to compiling a diverse range of genres and styles from one single country. Among the many personalities encountered by Hackett in Uganda, multi-instrumentalist Albert Ssempeke is perhaps the most respected of all of them, and we're glad to say that the man has been a crucial part of this album's recording. In terms of the music itself, don't assume that you'll be faced with one sound; while each track on here is unique, Hackett's contribution has been to align them with a single thread, or rather, a sonic aesthetic that features throughout. The best way to describe this is 'minimalist bleep', an ingredient which can be heard across each one of these incredible little experiments. Whether it's children singing or 10-but drum machines rattling, Ennanga Vision will take you in and immerse you in something new and special.

Review: Jamaica's Equiknoxx have spent the last decade re-inventing dancehall for the 21st century, delivering a swathe of releases that look further afield than Kingston for inspiration. Bird Sound Power is, somewhat surprisingly, their first appearance on vinyl, and sees them pop up on Demdike Stare's experimentally-minded DDS imprint. Featuring a mix of brand new cuts and previously released - but largely unknown - jams, it's a set that impresses with both its' rhythmic dexterity, and its' obvious inventiveness. Their 'riddims' veer from the punchy and rolling to the weird and out-there, with cute electronic flourishes, IDM influences, ambient chords and trill birdsong all adding to the humid, thrill-a-minute mood.

Review: Tim 'Erdbeerschnitzel' Keiling has been rather quiet of late, with his last release of note being the superb Ample Waters 12" on Delsin this time last year. The appearance of this third full-length - his first since 2012's Tender Leaf on Mirau - may explain his silence. Attendants is, somewhat predictably, another fine example of Keiling's talent for producing emotion-rich, melodious electronic music that refuses to stick to one tried-and-tested groove or rhythmic pattern. While rooted in the beauty of deep house and the spacey futurism of Detroit, many of the tracks owe as much to glitch-hop, broken beat and IDM as straight-up dancefloor fare. Regardless, it's an album that veritably glistens with positive intent from start to finish.

Review: Berlin native Erik Wiegand has quietly been a foundational part of the modern techno scene over the years. His work as Errorsmith has constantly ripped up the techno rule book when it comes to constructing beats, and what can and can't go into a dance track. The entirety of his music has come out on his own self-titled imprint or his other MMM stable until recently. PAN has taken it upon itself to bring the artist back to the foray, and he has done so in stupendous fashion. Superlative Fatigue is the legends fourth LP to date, and it crosses as many genres as it does eradicate them, dipping and diving out of techno with his usual levels of wit and charm. As Hardwax imply, there are nuances of dancehall and tribal music in there, manifested through the rough and sporadic beats, but we like to refer to this as 'post-dance', or rather, an amalgamation of all the sounds that have been twisted and edited throughout dance music history over the years. In fact, it would be redundant to condense this down to words, but if you've been a fan of Errorsmith's mythical albums, then here you'll get another reincarnation of the man, as choppy and ethereal as ever, the only difference being that his main point of reference is now coming from kuduru. Unmissable.

Review: It's been five years since the last album from long serving, Los Angeles based electronic experimentalist Eskmo. In the intervening years, he's devoted much time to soundtrack work, and composing music for orchestras. This is reflected in the feel of Sol, an album that fuses field recordings, pulsing electronics, glitchy beats and occasional folksy vocals with the kind of intricate orchestral arrangements that are fast becoming his calling card. Supposedly inspired by the interplay between the earth, the sun and the moon, it's a typically emotive set, with moments of murky darkness rubbing shoulders with heart-aching compositions and grandiose, rush-inducing instrumentals.
