Review: In our world, pretty much anything that's released on Portland's Audika imprint is worthy of a pedestal. The infamous label have been responsible for the majority of the reissued Arthur Russell catalogue, so they have that special glint in their eye when its comes to outsider rock, folk and electronica. They're back with something new this week, a nutty compilation of anarchic experimentation from the newly crowned Dirty Songs. To give some context, that is David Toop (bass, guitar, digital electronics, VCS3 synth), Phil Minton (voices), Evan Parker (soprano and tenor saxophones), Steve Beresford (Farfisa organ, VCS3 synth), and Mark Sanders (drums). Throughout these sixteen tracks, this group of outsiders converse and chatter, mingle and destroy, all at the same time; apparently inspired by recordings from Pink Floyd, the MC5 and other anti-establishment groups from the past, these dirty songs are a point of reference for anyone with a bit of rebellion in their stomach. Recommended!

Review: America's Bruce Ditmas has always relied on the outer fringes of the jazz scene, even before he began to experiment with abstract electronics. The man is a classically trained drummer who has made the switch to pastures more left of field, and that's how he's landed on the sorts of sounds emanating from the present Visioni Sconvolgenti. Out through Dead-Cert, this is one of the most intriguing slices of experimentation that we've heard the year, and it blows a lot of the current generation's work out the water. The label has always been a source of quality gear, but this might just be one of the best things they've put out. For fans of Hanson, Dilloway and Turman.

Review: Eight years after Teufelswerk, an album in which Hell called up giants like Bryan Ferry and P Diddy for creative adventures, International Deejay Gigolo Hell presents his fifth album Zukunftmusik. A much more personal affair, written and created with Peter Kruder, the album takes a deep dive into Hell's psyche. His inspirations, fears and fascinations all laid bare as we glide and slide from the poignant ballad of "Anywhere Anytime" to sinewy, sinister 6am acid ("Guede") via orchestrated cinematic synthesis ("K House" and "Inferno") to strident slices of evocative and highly narrative house music such as "Wild At Art". Hewn together with shades of experimentation and timeless pop science, Hell's created something incredibly special here.

Review: It would be fair to say that White Material co-founder DJ Richard's latest full-length excursion is an album of two halves (to mangle a football cliche). Stick on the first slab of wax, and you'll be confronted with a string of dark and moody treats, from creepy ambient interludes to grumpy electro, to mind-altering dark-Italo (see standout "Vanguard") and pulsating, off-kilter electronica (the restless acid pulse, off-kilter drums and paranoid chords of "Tunnel Stalker"). Whack on the second disc, though, and you'll be comforted and calmed by a series of intensely blissful, occasional melancholic compositions that are much lighter and dreamier in tone. Of these, it's the sublime "Final Mercy" and "Ex Aere" that stand out.

  1. Kosmose (19:54)
  2. Oceanic Mythology (24:44)
Review: Number three in the four part SchleiBen series from Emotional Response arrives with Don't DJ and Tropical Hi-Fi at the controls. The former is the current creative endeavour of Florian Meyer, founder of the Diskant label and one of the more experimental and academic producers to surface from Dusseldorf in recent times. He also forms one third of The Durian Brothers. Meyer's "Kosmose" is a 20 minute piece which explores the link between polyrhythmic percussion and brooding electronics; understandably, it's ripe with introspective qualities. Offering some contrast, Northern Australian producer Tropical Hi-fi turns in "Oceanic Mythology", a meandering journey through found sounds, psychedelia, folk music and more which sounds like listening to SUED B-sides whilst tripped out on acid.

Review: More wide-eyed, experimental goodness from Germany's Denovali Records has landed! Ricardo Donoso has quickly progressed over the years thanks to a hefty number of releases on the excellent Digitalis Recordings, another imprint reserved solely for the most daring of electronic concoctions. His latest LP is a journey through thick waters, where cavernous and apocalyptic drones are swallowed whole by flurries of noise and waves of sonic bleakness. It's the sort of music which could be in just about any film about the fall of man, and Donoso's balance between light and darkness is simply sublime. If you're into any of the PAN's label output, this is for you. Recommended.

Review: For the best part of a decade, Ricardo Donoso has been delivering albums that inhabit the no-man's-land between drone, dark ambient, experimental electronica, and neo-classical soundscapes. On Quintessence, his eighth full-length excursion, Donoso continues to mine these complimentary genres. So while opener "Interphase" glides along on evocative strings and gentle ambient chords, "Metaphase" crackles with crunchy electronic intensity, with Donoso's dark mood coming to the fore. Elsewhere, the majority of the tracks sit somewhere in between these two contrasting approaching, with manipulated orchestration rubbing shoulders with moody, droning electronics and reverb-laden audio textures. It makes for an impressive, if a little chilly, collection of otherworldly cuts.

Review: In which Mannequin become the latest label to dip into the vast CDr archives of Legowelt's dormant Strange Life Records. Originally released back in 2007, Mons Testaceum was the debut album from MinimalRome co-founder Heinrich Dressel and the onset of a trilogy dedicated to Monte Testaccio, an artificial mound in Rome composed almost entirely of 'testae', fragments of broken amphorae dating from the time of the Roman Empire. Notable for the prominent usage of Elka Synthex, a legendary Roman synthesizer, Mons Testaceum remains a wonderful curio of the Dressel discography and fans of the Italian's work will delight at the chance to own it on vinyl thanks to MNQ!

Review: * REPRESS * Few electronic acts could easily sustain three expansive 'best of' compilations, but then Detroit techno-electro fusionists Drexciya weren't your average electronic artists. In the space of little more than 12 EPs and a handful of albums, released in a ten-year burst between 1992 and 2002, James Stinson and Gerald Donald did more to push electronic music forwards than many of their Motor City peers. This third retrospective in Clone's excellent Journey of the Deep Sea Dweller series expands on the first two volumes, swimming between atmospheric IDM ("Aqua Worm Hole", "Vampire Island"), balls-deep techno workouts ("Nautilus", "Intensified Magnetron") and shimmering future electro (the futuristic Kraftwerk vibes of "Aquabahn").

Review: Whirled Music is one of the key documents of an inventive and energetic scene around the London Musicians Collective in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Originally released on David Toop's Quartz label in 1980, this LP was composed by Max Eastley. Steve Beresford. Paul Burwell and Toop, featuring a remarkable series of performances made entirely with whirled and swung instruments - from the homemade and store bought, to the traditional and even invented. In addition to variations on traditional instruments such as the bullroarer, they also made use of whirled whistles, hand drums, radios and microphones. Due to the danger this represented for both performers and audiences, the performers wore protective masks and were separated from the audience by a net. Recordings made around the time by various groupings of these musicians are gloriously anarchic real-time collages, but Whirled Music is a singularly focused affair. As Toop points out (in the newly commissioned notes contained in this reissue), these events were somewhere between composition, installation and improvisation - at once sharply focused and wildly uncontrolled.
