Review: Stones Throw welcome new artist The Cyclist, and with him, a new and edgier type of electronics. "Feel Beauty" opens things up in shuffle mode, bridging together a house tempo with warm and luscious strings, off-kilter beats and airy atmospherics. The rest of the LP unfolds into an even deeper, more mesmeric medley of tones and influences, ranging from the bleepy, Omar-S style beats of "Bones In Motion", going to the more industrial extravagance of "The March", or the sloppy beat layout of "Black Train" - true heads-down mentalism! Its fifteen tracks are just spilling with magnificence from every angle; a great signing form an ever-impressive label that can do no wrong - highly recommended.

Review: Andrew Morrisson aka The Cyclist returns to Hypercolour with a brand new, full length album. It's his fourth, in fact, and is crammed full of intriguing atmospheres and soundscapes. Harper is also known for his work under the pseudonyms of Buz Ludzha, Gongue and Affinity Projects with Tanaya Harper: who lends her vocal talents to this very album. The Sapa Inca Delirium LP leans heavily on South American mysticism, not just musically, but in the visual imagery that these 11 tracks paint so well across its various tempos and rhythms. The aforementioned Harper lends her fine vocal talents to two of the album's most exciting moments - the funky/psychedelic disco joint "Inhale/Exhale" and the saturated lo-fi house of "Mirrors". Elsewhere, "Forest Surge" fires some breakneck vintage electro style at you and "When We All Break Down" features Joni's seductive vocals over a dramatic breakbeat driven arrangement.

Review: We are honored to reissue the debut album from Carolyn Fok / CYRNAI, an Asian-American female solo artist from the Bay Area. Carolyn's adventures in sound began with recording stories on a tape recorder at age 9 in 1976. A short time later, exploring the scattering of musical instruments and effects units her father left lying around the family home. She became especially fascinated by his TEAC reel-to-reel recorder that set off a lifelong fascination with sound design. By the age of 16 Carolyn had become inspired by industrial electronic act Cabaret Voltaire, as well as anarcho-punks Crass. Creating the stage name CYRNAI, a rearranging alphabet of Carolyn Fok, she played in several Bay Area bands including Treason, A State Of Mind, Trial and Rhythm & Noise between 1983 and 1991.

In 1983 Carolyn met vegetarian peace punks who changed her course a bit, and which influenced the political aspect of her first release, 'Charred Blossoms.' Although 'Charred Blossoms' was referring to the destruction of war, it was really about the indoctrination process of the human mind. All songs were recorded at her parent's house in the suburbs using her brother's Moog Opus 3, her father's PAiA, Drummer Boy, synths, flute, saxophone and a Rhodes piano. She positioned microphones against amps to get frequency changes. While never physically cutting tape, Carolyn would try and get as many tracks of sound into 4 tracks via many starts and stops. Thus began the CYRNAI sound: music and sound layered, combined snapped together, creating an unintentional new form referred to as 'experimental', though it had no particular intention of experimenting. Rather, it was naturally composing sound almost in a vacuum. The 6-track 12" EP was released in 1985 by Mind Matter Records with a 48-page zine featuring Carolyn's poetry and drawings, re-printed here. For this reissue we've added 8 unreleased bonus tracks recorded between 1980-1984 and included a 6-page press kit with photos and notes by Carolyn. All songs have been remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios.

Review: We are honored to reissue the 3rd full length from Carolyn Fok / CYRNAI, an Asian-American female solo artist from the Bay Area.

In 1987, towards the end of art school, Carolyn won another award from the New York Society of Illustrators. During the trip to New York to accept the award, she met electronic/dulcimer musician, Dan Joseph. After writing some letters they decided to make a split cassette titled 'Hypno-Seizure'. CYRNAI contributed 30 minutes of music to Side A of the cassette, 10 untitled pieces that ran into each other. She had just bought a round-the-world ticket going from China to Europe via Eurails, to Egypt, where she liked to wander. She picked up instruments from several countries and recorded the sounds of her new surroundings. Technology was changing into early sampling and she used a Commodore 64 with large floppy disks to record loops. Originally self-released in 1988, this reissue adds 3 unreleased bonus tracks recorded during the same period. Each copy includes a double sided insert with lyrics, photos and notes by Carolyn. All songs have been remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios.

Review: We are honored to reissue the 2nd full length from Carolyn Fok / CYRNAI, an Asian-American female solo artist from the Bay Area.

In 1986 Carolyn moved into her family's building in downtown San Francisco providing a space to develop her own art and music for the next two decades. She was the only tenant of the five story building. The top floor had 36 abandoned rooms with building materials and holes between floors, staircases that created natural reverb. It was during this isolated time that Carolyn would start working on her second release, 'Parts of The Insomnic Wheel,' 60-minutes of ten untitled pieces that ran into each other. This was also the first release on cassette due time constraints of the LP. She spent many nights at the 24-hour diner across the street chatting metaphysics, parallel universes, the 5th dimension and astro-projections. Carolyn would sleep next to paper/pencil and report dream states, experimenting with mental techniques, investigating how far her mind could go. It was a journey to unravel the 'dark night of the soul'. Utilizing her industrial surroundings, Carolyn would bang on sheet metal and record percussion on found materials. Originally released by Ladd-Frith in 1986, this reissue adds 4 unreleased bonus tracks recorded during the same period. Each copy includes a 16-page zine with lyrics, photos and notes by Carolyn. All songs have been remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios.

Review: Dark Entries will reissue the first 4 full-lengths from Carolyn Fok / CYRNAI, an Asian-American female solo artist from the Bay Area. The 6xLP box set contains all of Carolyn's officially released music as CYRNAI between 1980-1990, as well as bonus materials. Most of these songs will see their first vinyl appearance ever in a deluxe edition limited boxed set (333 copies). Remastered by George Horn, the set features an exclusive 48-page booklet with photos, quotes, interviews and liner notes written by Carolyn and introduction by Greg Allen (author of 'Klaus Schulze, Electronic Music Legend'). Over 70 songs, 4 hours of music, spread across six records plus an exclusive bonus 7" of cover songs by The Cure and Gang Of Four all packaged in a black matte wrap box with crimson red foil stamping.

Creating the stage name CYRNAI, a rearranging alphabet of Carolyn Fok, she played in several Bay Area bands including Treason, A State Of Mind, Trial and Rhythm & Noise between 1983 and 1991. Her debut release as CYRNAI, 1985's 12" EP 'Charred Blossoms', followed by the cassette albums 'Parts of The Insomnic Wheel' in 1986, 'Hypno-Seizure' in 1987 and two versions of 'To Subtle-Drive' in 1989/1990.

Despite having been featured in publications including Electronic Musician, Keyboard and with a long term association with Industrial music, Carolyn has remained an intensely private musician, artist and writer until now. However, she has launched an ambitious project that involves releasing her vast archive of music as a 'memoir' via her website memoirofsound.com. Having spent extensive time in the studio amassing around 100 albums worth of electronic and experimental music, field recordings, collaborations, band projects and more, these are now being released in one place. "Her time is beyond due to be recognized, represented and attributed for her contributions to experimental analogue culture with sounds still fresher than tomorrow." Review: We are honored to reissue the 4th full-length from Carolyn Fok / CYRNAI, an Asian-American female solo artist from the Bay Area.

By 1988 Carolyn's recording gear had many changes and upgrades, from cassette 4-tracks, 8-track reel-to-reel 1/2 inch, a TASCAM 388 to DAT, to floppy disk sampling. She spent three to four nights a week developing sequences for 14 hours from 10pm onwards. Samples would sometimes begin on a Synclavier keyboard with its sophisticated sequencing capabilities. Her fourth album, 'To Subtle-Drive', was self-released in 1988 as 8 untitled songs spread across a 30-minute cassette. Then in 1989 Carolyn discovered the first Digidesign digital recording software and changed the project to have more ethnic sounds and samples stemming from tapes collected during a trip to Egypt. In 1990 'To Subtle-Drive' was re-released with 2 songs from the 1988 release and 4 new compositions. This reissue adds 5 bonus tracks recorded during the same period spread across a double LP set. Each copy includes a double sided insert with lyrics, photos and notes by Carolyn. All songs have been remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. "Old-soul beat tracks on cassette with time and techno-guilotine songs."

Review: Los Angeles based producer Alex Gray aka D/P/I of CHANCEIMAG.es returns, this time on French imprint Shelter Press with more avant electronics excursions on the Composer LP. Thee seven sound collages are said to be an experiment in rhythm, where human error is introduced to basic sounds (such as a djembe or conga) via midi controllers, introducing complex processes and effects which naturally developed into compositions. Gray himself hopes his album "can act as a beacon of creativity for future generations, who are currently being completely saturated by marketing content for products and media that will do nothing but confuse and distract them.

Review: Before the Levant's Bedouin imprint and now Berlin's PAN label got to Pan Daijing, the artist had only released one extended cassette for the killer Noisekolln Tapes...and that in itself was enough to cement this artist's name into the front of our minds. Funnily enough, that's also the sort of effect that this rich and multi-faceted strain of electronic psychedelia has had on us when we first heard it. Having said that, this debut LP, Lack, is a much deeper and more introspective cocktail of sounds; Daijing's clearly got a talent for blending all sorts of mesmerising sounds into strange and wonderful loops for the open-minded. Noise or industrial aren't quite enough to describe the scope of this artist's skills, and the material is way too daring to place it anywhere near the word 'ambient'. Rather, Daijing constructs a chilling story from a mixture of visceral field recordings, sinister voices and, of course, a significant injection of sonic chemicals in the form of drones, glitches and unforgiving distortion. Moreover, though its at times disturbing arrangements, this album makes you 'feel' something. A characteristic which is often lacking from contemporary music. Recommended.

Review: Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Carla Dal Forno was once a member of a number of legendary Australian outfits. These days, the Melbournian resides in Berlin, which is presumably where she met Blackest Ever Black boss Kiran Sande. He loved her clandestine, atmospheric take on pop - think minimal wave, cold-wave and early Joy Division mixed with contemporary ambience, and leftfield synth-pop - and has decided to put out this debut album. Comprised of four songs and four instrumentals, You Know What It's Like has a timeless feel; the folksy, Scott Walker-influenced "Dry In The Rain", for example, sounds like it could have been recorded at any point over the last 40 years, while "Dragon Breath" has a genuine Radiophonic Workshop feel.

Review: Lucrecia Dalt has long been a singular artist whose poetic lyrical dexterity and experimental instincts have long made her one of Colombia's most intriguing artists. Anticlines, her first full length outing for three years, has been trailed by RVNG INTL as "a volume of poetic theory and self contemplating the bodies of self above and beneath the earth's surface". Musically, it's certainly a trippy and mind-altering affair, with Dalt combining gentle modular synthesizer pulses, deep space electronic rhythms and creepy experimental textures with nods towards her Colombian heritage and out-of-this-world ambient weirdness. On top of this brilliant sound soup you'll find Dalt's own spoken word vocals, which tend towards the hypnotic. It is an out of body experience, after all.

Review: Daniel Terndrup, simply known as Daniel T, returns to our charts and shelves with this masterful new LP for the Cascine imprint, the aptly named Heliotrope. On first appearance, this album could seem like abstract electronics all over but, in reality, it's more of a delightful and refreshing spin on pop music; the producer's involvement in the Cosmic Kids project is clearly audible from the start, with tunes like "Call" or "Moonlight Bounce" sounding like they would not be out of place on the Drive soundtrack. As for the rest of the album, however, Daniel T heads into deep waters, progressing his futuristic take on pop music with edgy drum machine loops that remain firmly on the off-kilter end of the scale. Just how we like it.

Review: Russian ex-pat techno maverick Dasha Rush has always been a unique talent. Even so, Sleepstep - her first full-length for the admirable Raster Noton imprint - is a high concept affair. Designed to induce a dream-like state, it offers a mix of droning ambience, slo-motion electronica, yearning ambience and hypnotic, far-out techno, all interspersed with brief readings of Rush's poems. By and large, it has the desired effect, and even the darker, more macabre moments - see the percussive hit of "Lumiere Avant Midi", for starters - have a calming, atmospheric quality. By and large, it's the beatless excursions that really stand out, with the operatic vocals and woozy strings of "Sail Away To Her" being particularly spellbinding.

Review: Given the underground acclaim heaped on Marie Davidson's previous albums - ultra-stylish affairs that blend elements of minimal wave, dark Italo-disco, off-kilter electro and moody ambient - it's little surprise to see her popping up on Minimal Wave offshoot Cititrax. The album's nine tracks are largely sharp, rough and fuzzy, with sparse-but-dense drum machines rhythms underpinning bouncy, delay-laden synth lines, thrusting electronics and Davidson's sleazy, spoken word vocals. It's an attractive combination that guarantees thrills throughout, from the almost claustrophobic throb of "Denial", to the mutant electrofunk bounce of "Good Vibes".

Review: Best known as a collaborator and co-writer on the legendary John Carpenter's recent Halloween score - as well as his Lost Themes and Anthology albums - Daniel Davies now presents his debut album on Kent based imprint Burning Witches. Featured on this eight track LP is a captivating imaginary soundtrack: otherworldly instrumentals that expand on the British-American musician's distinct talent for wringing modernistic soundscapes from vintage synths. It brings to mind the classic synthesized scores of the '70s and '80s. In addition to his work with Carpenter (his godfather), Davies is known for his work with the rock bands Year Long Disaster, Karma to Burn and CKY.

Review: Following DJ Richard's crucial LP Dial round out another fine year with a debut album from self-styled "open collective" Dawn Mok, whose debut came with a fine contribution to the 15th anniversary compilation. Featuring creative input from an international cast of musicians encompassing the US, Asian, and European heritage, Dawn Mok are a curious addition to the Dial cause. Spearheaded by collective founder Felix Mura and vocalist Bundi, Eternal Love shares more with r&b than house or techno, but the best part is that we hadn't heard this type of music ever come out of this label. There are plenty of more abstract moments too, of course, and the tracks that are more on the pop side of things are still drenched in a thick layer or ambient gloom. It's minimal r&b, Dial style.

Review: With this being the Mana label's third release so far, we're only just beginning to see what the label is really about...unsurprisingly, we're well into it! Their last LP was Benedict Drew's inimitable Crawling Through Tory Slime, so this appearance from the largely enigmatic De Leon feels and sounds like the right thing for them to be doing. While this LP was released on cassette back in 2014, it feels absolutely justified for it to be released on vinyl, especially given the quality of the instruments contained within. The six untitled tracks are a long development of one idea, one vision that carries the instruments forward. Through intricate percussion swings, subtle infusions of field recordings, and just about any sort of distortion going, De Leon's world is a vast and complex one, backed by a pulsating rhythm which transcends all other forms of dance music. Timeless.

Review: Brazilian pianist Jocy De Oliveira was so much more than a musician. Born in 1936, the self-made artist and sound designer was an early experimenter in her homeland, and was instrumental in giving way to much of the later wave of creativity and freedom that went into Brazil's musical dynasty. Estorias For Voice, Acoustic & Electronics Instruments first came out in 1981 and, while its rough edges and sudden bursts of oddity where a marvel back then, they haven't exactly become any less impactful as time went on. In fact, the looseness with which these 'stories' are weaved together is, and always will be, a source of wonder and mystery, from our end. Mixed with tactical bursts of electronics and curious vocal samples, these piano songs have done plenty for the rise of experimentation in music and, specifically, for the advent of electronic music.
