Review: Icelandic music producer Bjork, who requires absolutely no introduction given her massive contribution to electronic pop music over the last twenty years, finally returns with her new album Vulnicura on One Little Indian Records. Although the LP represents her breakup with Matthew Barney, there are vivid rays of light nested among the more dreary-eyed vocals and melodies. As per usual with her work, there is a distinctive personal touch to her songs. This is most vividly characterised by the droning style of her singing, a sort of juxtaposition when combined to the music below it. Expect an intricate blend of sci-fi electronics, break-ridden power beats and of course, plenty of hard ambience. Bjork's ninth studio album is another winner. This deluxe edition comes with a download code!

Review: When is a remix album not a remix album? When it's creatively driven by Bjork. The wonderfully titled Bastards might be a collection of reversions from her 2011 album Biophilia but it's clear all artists have been specially considered for their job and worked hard to subvert their usual motifs; stretching from the warped techno twists of 16-Bit's take on "Hollow" to the ghostly acapella of These New Puritans remix of "Mutual Core", this is one bastard you want in your life.

Review: Originally released in 2007, Bjork's Volta, and later named Voltaic, is considered to be one of the artist's greatest works, one which incorporates everything from African rhythms, industrial tones and even elements of hip-hop thanks to Timbaland's appearances on the LP. At the time of release, the album was and is still praised by critics, it spent a good 10 week's on Billboard's charts and explored another side to Bjork's many talents. If you haven't heard it yet, you have definitely missed out because it is truly magical.

Review: Following from the success of this year's Vulnicura LP, Iceland's Bjork has decided to release an acoustic companion made up of string-only reinterpretations; a more abstract and pensive piece, if you will. One Little Indian is the label, of course, but this time there are strictly no beats, and the only concrete sounds within it are the subtle and placid wails of Bjork's own voice. While it isn't truly a pop album, there is enough playfulness and charm to render it playable not only as a solitary piece of music, but also alongside other pieces...in an explorative DJ set, perhaps.

Review: Depending on which reviews you read, Utopia is either Bjork's most impressive album for a long time, or an interesting but flawed one. Co-produced by Mute and XL artist Arca with occasional studio contributions from Rabit, the set was designed to be positive and dream-like in tone, with Bjork delivering some of her most romantic lyrics to date. Musically, it's every bit as bonkers and brilliant as you'd expect, with pastoral and classical instrumentation nestling side by side with 8-bit electronics, bowel-bothering sub-bass, folksy textures and wildlife field recordings. It should perhaps be seen as a partner piece to the notably dystopian Vulcinara (2015), offering a more blissful counterpoint to that album's bleak and intense mood.

Review: The Black Dog kicked off all the way back in 1989, first coming through with their own Black Dog Productions, and later being snapped up by London's Warp Records. Nowadays, the quintet has reduced down to three, the combined forces of Ken Dowie, Martin Dust and Richard Dust. Dust Science, an infamous imprint out of Sheffield, and one which has seen the likes of Cabaret Voltaire all over its catalsogue, has taken it upon itself to release the trio's thirteenth album to date, Black Daisy Wheel. Much like you'd imagine, the LP is a Pandora's Box of sounds, vibes and movement. Through an intricate blend of spaced-out electronics, drone relics, and mild-mannered house chugging, these guys know how to construct and atmosphere, and are certainly well-equipped to form a narrative out of 10+ tracks. If you're on the scout for something deep, meaningful and long-lasting, The Black Dog are your go-to outfit.

Review: Among many of the producer's aliases and side monikers, Black Zone Myth Chant is surely Maxime Primault's finest accomplishment as an artist. Having come through via Low Jack's unfailingly pleasing Editions Gravats over the last few years, he has now begun to establish himself as our go-to man for sounds that truly lie on the periphery of what is deemed normal or sane. Feng Shen is his new LP, once again coming out through Editions Gravats, and it's a wild, ethereal journey from start to finish. The frameworks are loose and cavernous, but most tracks going further than ambient or drone do contain plenty of rhythmic flow, making them playable on the more open-minded of dancefloors. "Spiritual Decay Dub" perfectly reflects the diversity of sounds on here, their mysticism, and Black Zone Myth Chant's ability to construct meaning out of sparse sounds. Warmly recommended!

Review: John Blackford's career got an early boost when he won a Moby remix composition. He then released one rather good EP of electro workouts on Bot in 2008, before all but disappearing. Organism marks his comeback from that extended hiatus and is really rather good. He begins with the dark, moody and intoxicating "Third Eye", before rolling through melodious, evocative cuts that variously tip a wink to hip-hop/IDM fusion ("Dopamine"), post-Drexciya dark-scapes (the jazzy "Faust"), spacey electronica ("Implicit Memory"), clandestine ambient ("Dark Matter") and slowly unfurling beauty (the creepy-but-blissful "Organism"). As returns go, it's really rather good.

Review: James Blake's debut album is undoubtedly one of 2011's most keenly awaited releases, and its arrival via his own (major label funded) Atlas imprint ensures their is no lull in momentum for a producer who enjoyed a watershed 2010 with releases on Hessle Audio and R&S. The results here differ wildly from his previous sonic excursions - gone are the shimmering R&B soaked melodies of "CMYK" and the sheer experimentalism of the Klavierwerke EP, which saw the young Londoner depart from the confines of the dancefloor and enter a realm where there was only a passing reference to rhythm-based music. Instead we are treated to Blake's own yearning, raw voice, delicate pianos and an underlying sense of melancholy. Ubiquitous single "Limit To Your love" and the crackly sonic terrain evoked on "The Wilhelm Scream" are among the most immediately pleasing moments, but there is much to explore here. It's a fascinating opus and surely the catalyst to a long and fruitful career at the top.

Review: Since releasing his second album in 2013, James Blake has become one of the most in-demand artists and producers on the planet, recently appearing on Beyonce's much-hyped "visual album", Lemonade. On The Colour In Anything, it's very much business as usual, with Blake only occasionally veering away from his drowsy, atmospheric, piano-and-vocal template. These variations on a theme - the subtle, 4/4 techno-pop of opener "Radio Silence", the autotune-sporting R&B pop of "I Need A Forest Fire", tactile warmth of "Always", and frankly quite odd accapella throw-down "Meet You In The Maze" - add interest, though Blake remains at his best when concentrating on his most emotion-rich and heart-aching songs.

Review: For the uninitiated, Blessed Initiative is a new project from Ketev man Yair Elazar Glotman. This debut album for pal James Ginzburg's Subtext Recordings label is little less than a sonic manifesto. According to the accompanying information, the album is the result of a long and complex sound design process that variously involved manipulating tape recordings, recording his own foley style sound effects, and putting the whole thing together with the aid of a customized workstation. The results are largely very impressive though, sitting somewhere between claustrophobic sound collage and drowsy, meandering ambience. In other words, despite the high-minded experimentation behind it, Blessed Initiative just sounds great.

Review: Ever since first appearing on Bristol's Black Acre imprint back in 2009, Kwesi Darko's Blue Daisy project has been hard to pin down. 2011 debut album The Sunday Gift was a triumph of woozy downtempo fusion, with bustling bass music influences rubbing shoulders with folksy elements, ambient, trip-hop and experimental electronica. Following Black Acre's demise, Darko now finds himself on R&S, a label willing to let him follow his unique path. As a result, sophomore album Darker Than Blue is an even more adventurous and enjoyable set than its' predecessor, with Darko adding modern classical, beat poetry and hazy jazz influences to his already heady musical brew.

Review: To celebrate the release of their first collaborative work in three years, Tag Eins Tag Zwei, F.S Bluum and Nils Frahm have decided to reissue their first two albums on one gatefold release. Record one boasts Music For Lovers Music Versus Time, the 2010 debut that established their studio partnership. Boasting a selection of improvisations focused on Bluum's acoustic guitars and Frahm's piano, it's also blessed with some magical contributions from brass and woodwind players. Over on record two, you'll find 2013's Music For Wobbling Music Versus Gravity, which successfully stripped back their core approach - just guitars and piano, with occasional use of effects pedal and sampled textures - whilst retaining their delicate balance between neo-classical beauty and high-minded experimentation.

Review: Whether it's part of Hype Williams alongside Inga Copeland or with his solo material, Dean Blunt seems to delight in confounding expectations. Over the years, he's offered releases that steadfastly refuse to fit into any neat pattern. The Redeemer maintains this diverse approach, largely stepping away from the experimental electronics of last year's Hyperdub LP with Inga Copeland in favour of a more fragile, heartfelt sound that prioritizes acoustic guitars, harps, mournful strings and emotionally raw lyrics over drum machines and hissing pops and crackles. It makes for an arresting, if surprising, set, one which retains interest thanks not only to the emotion-rich feel of its music, but Blunt's impeccable sequencing skills. Certainly, it squeezes more unfussy, simple beauty into 70 minutes than anything he's done previously.

Review: Hype Williams may now be relegated to an amusing/puzzling yet prolific chapter in the respective solo careers of its two founding members Inga Copeland and Dean Blunt, but the mystique and obliqueness that surrounded the project remains a weapon both continue to employ. Blunt's latest solo album Black Metal is perhaps his most high profile to date, seeing him pitch up on long running UK indie Rough Trade for a 13 track journey through his singular craft. If you touched on either of the albums Blunt released last year you should have an idea of what to expect, though of course there are still plenty of surprises within.

Review: Previously known for their pioneering and, at times, outstanding work as Hype Williams, Dean Blunt and Inga Copeland change tack with a suitably eclectic and unusual full-length for Hyperdub. Black Is Beautiful is an odd but endearing collection that leaps between sounds, styles and genres almost at will. Opening with a blast of fuzzy jazz-rock, its 15 tracks variously touches on skewed dream-pop, E'd-up downtempo curiosities, wrongspeed electronica, calming ambience, woozy demo-pop, skittering, smacked-out rave rhythyms, droning madness and impossible-to-define strangeness. It could just be the album of the year.

Review: Given that it's been eight years since the last Boards of Canada album, Tomorrow's Harvest should, by rights, push Daft Punk's Random Access Memories in the hype stakes. Certainly, it's a fine set. During their sabbatical, Marcus Eoin and Michael Sandison have lost none of their power to amaze and impress. Chords drone, samples hiss, synths shimmer and beats swing. There are intense ambient moments and intoxicating, post-IDM dreamscapes. It is in turns icy, warm, introspective and blindingly picturesque. Throughout, Tomorrow's Harvest is impeccably atmospheric, conjuring images of windswept Scottish moors, becalmed Cornish bays and maudlin pagan ceremonies. As comeback records go, it's pretty darn good.

Review: When it comes to a reissue such as this it can't be understated just how arresting the work of Boards of Canada can be in the right situation. This EP, that came to light in between Music Has The Right To Children and Geogaddi, represents the enigmatic duo at their most powerful, channeling their energy into four long-form tracks that draw on all of their combined strengths. "Kid For Today" is haunting and dark but utterly heartbreaking, whilst "Amo Bishop Roden" heads into more mysterious territory. "In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country" is eerie in its titular invitation to join a cult, and "Zoetrope" tips its hat to Terry Riley et al in its looping phrases, but really there's no describing the magnificence of these gems, pleasingly reissued on vinyl to beat the Discogs chancers.
