Review: For the uninitiated, Blessed Initiative is a new project from Ketev man Yair Elazar Glotman. This debut album for pal James Ginzburg's Subtext Recordings label is little less than a sonic manifesto. According to the accompanying information, the album is the result of a long and complex sound design process that variously involved manipulating tape recordings, recording his own foley style sound effects, and putting the whole thing together with the aid of a customized workstation. The results are largely very impressive though, sitting somewhere between claustrophobic sound collage and drowsy, meandering ambience. In other words, despite the high-minded experimentation behind it, Blessed Initiative just sounds great.

Review: Ever since first appearing on Bristol's Black Acre imprint back in 2009, Kwesi Darko's Blue Daisy project has been hard to pin down. 2011 debut album The Sunday Gift was a triumph of woozy downtempo fusion, with bustling bass music influences rubbing shoulders with folksy elements, ambient, trip-hop and experimental electronica. Following Black Acre's demise, Darko now finds himself on R&S, a label willing to let him follow his unique path. As a result, sophomore album Darker Than Blue is an even more adventurous and enjoyable set than its' predecessor, with Darko adding modern classical, beat poetry and hazy jazz influences to his already heady musical brew.

Review: To celebrate the release of their first collaborative work in three years, Tag Eins Tag Zwei, F.S Bluum and Nils Frahm have decided to reissue their first two albums on one gatefold release. Record one boasts Music For Lovers Music Versus Time, the 2010 debut that established their studio partnership. Boasting a selection of improvisations focused on Bluum's acoustic guitars and Frahm's piano, it's also blessed with some magical contributions from brass and woodwind players. Over on record two, you'll find 2013's Music For Wobbling Music Versus Gravity, which successfully stripped back their core approach - just guitars and piano, with occasional use of effects pedal and sampled textures - whilst retaining their delicate balance between neo-classical beauty and high-minded experimentation.

Review: Hype Williams may now be relegated to an amusing/puzzling yet prolific chapter in the respective solo careers of its two founding members Inga Copeland and Dean Blunt, but the mystique and obliqueness that surrounded the project remains a weapon both continue to employ. Blunt's latest solo album Black Metal is perhaps his most high profile to date, seeing him pitch up on long running UK indie Rough Trade for a 13 track journey through his singular craft. If you touched on either of the albums Blunt released last year you should have an idea of what to expect, though of course there are still plenty of surprises within.

Review: Given that it's been eight years since the last Boards of Canada album, Tomorrow's Harvest should, by rights, push Daft Punk's Random Access Memories in the hype stakes. Certainly, it's a fine set. During their sabbatical, Marcus Eoin and Michael Sandison have lost none of their power to amaze and impress. Chords drone, samples hiss, synths shimmer and beats swing. There are intense ambient moments and intoxicating, post-IDM dreamscapes. It is in turns icy, warm, introspective and blindingly picturesque. Throughout, Tomorrow's Harvest is impeccably atmospheric, conjuring images of windswept Scottish moors, becalmed Cornish bays and maudlin pagan ceremonies. As comeback records go, it's pretty darn good.

Review: Widely regarded as Boards of Canada's finest hour, Music Has The Right To Children finds itself the subject of a well-deserved 2LP gatefold reissue from Warp Records. One of the most defining records of what was known for better or worse as IDM still sounds as timeless as it did in 1998, as the library tones of "Wildlife Analysis", thick downtempo rhythms of "Roygbiv" and out of focus melodies of "Olson" prove. Essential!

Review: When it comes to a reissue such as this it can't be understated just how arresting the work of Boards of Canada can be in the right situation. This EP, that came to light in between Music Has The Right To Children and Geogaddi, represents the enigmatic duo at their most powerful, channeling their energy into four long-form tracks that draw on all of their combined strengths. "Kid For Today" is haunting and dark but utterly heartbreaking, whilst "Amo Bishop Roden" heads into more mysterious territory. "In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country" is eerie in its titular invitation to join a cult, and "Zoetrope" tips its hat to Terry Riley et al in its looping phrases, but really there's no describing the magnificence of these gems, pleasingly reissued on vinyl to beat the Discogs chancers.

Review: Ohio born producer John Roberts returns under a different pseudonym named Body Four on his own Brunette Editions and follows up last years Plum LP under his birth name, as well as two previous full length outing on Hamburg label Dial: namely his stunning debut Glass Eights. On this self titled album under the alias, Roberts once again utilises both electronic and acoustic sources, merging both classical and dance music influences, as well as some some experimental and musique concrete approaches on what could be his most challenging album yet. Overall the opus' lo-fi and tape saturated aesthetic adds to its atmosphere, as jagged junkyard rhythms thump around beneath layers of dust and his gritty sound sources writhe in low-bit sample rates and endless layers of time based effects. At times gentle or subtle and rather quite abrasive at other times, all in all this collection of tracks (which on average come in at around a couple of minutes) cover a great variety of moods and grooves.

Review: It's been a long time between drinks for Darrell "Bola" Fitton, a long serving IDM explorer who released five fabulous albums on Skam between 1998 and 2007. D E G, his first album in a decade, is a predictably beguiling and atmospheric affair. Beginning with the sumptuously spacey ambient sweep of "Fhorth", Fitton delivers a master class in hard-to-pigeonhole electronica. While some tracks are reminiscent of some of Autechre's more melodious moments (see "Herzzatzz" and the acid-flecked "Pelomen Vapour 2"), others draw influence from Rephlex style braindance (see the sharp synth riffs and bustling beats of "Landor 50X2"), spaced-out post-dubstep electronic folk ("Evensong") and ghostly, post-apocalyptic ambience ("Pelomen Vapour 3"). Throughout, it remains a hugely entertaining affair.

Review: Since debuting in the early twenty-teens, Parisian producer Adrien Durrand has proved adept at bending musical styles and sounds. There's much of that on Jungle? Quelle Jungle?, his first album under the newly expanded Bon Voyage Organisation alias. Across the album's 13 tracks, you'll find seductive, Air style fusions of Chanson and electronic music, stylish post-punk '80s synth-pop, humid blends of Haitian rhythms and stoned Afro-disco, simmering spaced-out soundscapes, Sebastien Tellier style orchestrated Balearica, Italo-disco inspired sunrise shufflers and even a touch of experimental, out-there electronica that sounds like the Radiophonic Workshop jamming with African drum circles. In other words, Durrand inhabits his own sonic space and the resultant music is rarely less than wondrous.

Review: Two years on from its initial release, Bonobo's much-loved Black Sands album got the remix treatment. While remix albums can be a bit hit and miss, Black Sands Remixed largely hits the spot - thanks in no small part to the A&R involvement of Eglo bossman Alexander Nut. The selection of remixers is open-minded and on-point, resulting in some near stunning interpretations. FaltyDL, Machinedrum and Cosmin TRG offer some decidedly floor-friendly rubs (the former's take on "All In Forms" delivering a great fusion of melancholic depth and skittering drums), while Arp101, Blue Daisy, Floating Points (in jazzwise mode) and fast rising youngster Lapalux turn in thrilling, sofa-friendly reworks.

Review: Given his impeccable downtempo credentials, you'd expect Bonobo's Late Night Tales mix to be one of the finer installments in the series (and that's saying something). Predictably, it is. Sweet, sensual and atmospheric, with plenty of unlikely gems and forgotten classics for the heads to enjoy, it surprises and impresses with each successive track. His own cover of Donovan's "Get Thy Bearings" is particularly revelatory - string drenched, hazy, atmospheric and, of course, immaculately produced - but there are many other highlights. Check, for example, the smoky reggae-soul of Nina Simone's "Baltimore", the shuffling delight of Andrew Ashong's "Flowers" and the enveloping intimacy of Schlomo's "Places". And that's just for starters.

Review: Bookworms' new LP Appropriation Loops (A Love Story) explores appropriation of music and culture throughout time. Borrowing ideas from modern classical, jazz, minimal techno and granular synthesis, he taps into the feedback loop of contemporary art. Real name Nicholas Dawson, the New York City based producer's been producing music under the Bookworms moniker since 2012. His early work appeared on the Ron Morelli's L.I.E.S. and currently he runs a party and label called Confused House. The party is notable for its focus on hardware techno from NYC and abroad. The label has released collaborative records from Bookworms and his L.I.E.S. cohort Steve Summers. Like William Basinski's tape loops morphing over time, appropriation loops are recurrent, fluctuant feedback loops in popular and unpopular culture. Rae Sremmund talks about how they're the new black rock stars with guitars in 2016's "Black Beatles", but The Beatles appropriated black American rhythm and blues music from the American South to begin with. Kraftwerk's mechanic interpretation of Motown hits of 60s and 70s Detroit was later echoed by Detroit techno producers who subsequently put the funk back in it and made it more minimal. Detroit techno, for one, could never have been without the device of appropriation... but the device is often misused. People want to know where their chicken comes from (free range, grass fed, no antibiotics) but they don't want to know where their music comes from. Where does it come from? Trace the appropriation loops to find out.

Review: Box clever, box fresh, box think-outside-of: Boxwork, a London basssmith who's been smouldering across house, tech and bass circles on the likes of WNCL and LNUK now antes up with a full album on "Shades". Showcasing his breadth on his widest tip yet, we're nudged and sashayed between the lines throughout... The subtle jazzy UKGisms of "Honest Loose", the thundering tribal head-twists of "Life Tour 29", the grainy vocal loops and industrial strength techy kicks of "Phant", the deep sea Dilla breaks of the "Request Line" interludes, the woozy drum loops and leftside timpani of "Ritual" and of course the serious club hitter "Portland Push", this list goes on. This is the sound of an accomplished debut album.
