Spill (limited transparent red vinyl 12")
Cat: BED 008. Rel: 18 Apr 18
  1. Spill (8:17)
  2. Wrecked (3:11)
  3. Fluid (3:50)
Review: Following up 2016's dynamic Plum LP on his Brunette Editions imprint, New York City based producer John Roberts returns with a release that he best described himself as 'a series of songs written and destroyed. Self-cannibalized productions spit back out in abnormal silhouettes.' Indeed, it's quite the departure from the dusty and evocative deep house he produced on Hamburg imprint Dial a while back - in particular his well received debut Glass Eights in 2010. "Spill" is an unholy mixture of neo-classical, experimental lo-fi techno and guitar drones - that isn't altogether unpleasant. On the flip, be captivated by the bittersweet ambient house of "Wrecked" and the ethereal peace "Fluid" composed of powerful blasts of distortion and sombre trumpets.

  1. Uncertain Grace (Vilod Aka Ricardo Villalobos & Max Loderbauer remix) (10:48)
  2. Lenina (Ricardo Villalobos remix) (12:47)
Review: Previously, Ricardo Villalobos and Max Loderbauer have delivered some deliciously epic remixes that sound more like freestyle electronic jazz epics than stripped-back minimal techno chuggers. It's perhaps fitting, then, that they've been given a chance to rework two tracks from Swedish jazz drummer-turned-electronic experimentalist Samuel Ruhrer's recent album, Range of Regularity. Together the Berlin-based duo tackles "Uncertain Grace", creating a mind-altering concoction rich in frazzled electronic pulses, chiming melodies, delay-laden drum hits and deep-sea textures. Villalobos goes solo on the flip to lay down a typically intoxicating, off kilter, acid-flecked minimal techno interpretation of "Lenina". The Chilean keeps things fresh by incorporating fluttering flute passages and broken electronics.

Review: High Ends returns with an EP by Thomas Romain and his mother: famed free jazz pianist Christine Wodrascka. Christine's style is wholly unique: there are no barriers for her sonic exploration. Sound matter, energy, forms, architecture and emotion all play a part in shaping the style of one the most unique musicians out there. In his own irregular style, Thomas adds a sense of swing to his mother's improvisations. This fusion of acoustic and electronic creates wholly original experimental journeys which will delight the auditory senses of those listening. All these aesthetics are translated into opening track "Tribute To Parmegiani" where the track's namesake just happened to pass away on the day it was produced. It receives a sublime and hypnotic remix up next by Tobias Freund (Ostgut Ton).

  1. God Dreng (9:12)

  3. 0908 (8:59)
  4. Canis (5:39)
Review: International Sun-Earth Explorer have been in a category of their own throughout 2016, coming through four smoking techno joints including this latest 12" by debutant Route. Very much in the spirit of the legendary Basic Channel duo, "God Dreng" takes a beatless sway of dub infusions and creates a solid movement out of thin air, a hollow drone of sonic that develops further on "Ofos". "0908" on the flip is less moody and the synths pick up more freedom and momentum, while "Canis" glazes the sounds over with a chilly layer of FX. Quality.

  4. Tohc (8:54)
Review: Now, this is a label we absolutely adore! Germay's Disk imprint, a sub-label of the wider Diskant brand, headed by the needlessly fascinating Durian Brothers, returns to our shelves with newcomer Sabla. If these guys have gone out to recruit, you know that you're in for something special, and the opening "Danzaguida" is nothing short of breathtaking thanks to an improbable set of sounds guided by what seems to feel like a reversed beat pattern. "Fire/Wire" is an ominous glow of subdued harmonies terrifying didgeridoo bass, while "W" shimmers its cold, penetrative techno hook with the upmost off-kilterism, and "Tohc" goes all molecular with the help of some supremely wacky sonics. Nutty and recommended, as always.

Estacion Inmortal (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: AK 001. Rel: 12 Mar 18
  1. Huracan
  2. Albatross
  3. Maria (feat Pascale)
Review: Sainte Vie has been working away in the Mexican underground for some time, running Akumandra as a free, digital-only label to help promote all kinds of electronic music. Now it's time for Vie to step up with their first outright release, first time on wax, and hence a new era for the label. The tone is varied across the record, leading in with the worldly drum rattle and string strum of "Huracan", a whirlwind of drama and hand-played musicianship that stands out from the crowd. "Albatross" is a more introspective cut that brings Vie's vocals to the forefront, and then "Maria" chills things out further with a haunting vocal from Pascale and some delicate finger picking guitar delights over a dynamic set of drums.

  1. Atonement (7:03)
  2. Summoned (5:57)
  3. Vertex (7:10)
  4. Clairvoyance (6:05)
Review: KDC digs deep into the satanic study of angles and ratios with his latest Auxiliary exploration. "Atonement" is an industrial strength snowplough cutting through mountains of ice with a high end riff that buzzes over the hammering, bucking drums while "Summoned" takes what could conventionally be a Funk D'Void-style house groove before turning it inside out with a low end drone that grows incessantly, washing out the original groove. "Vertex" plays the role of conjurer with its pertinent hi-hat shaking and scuffing over a deep sea bass/kick arrangement while "Clairvoyance" updates some of the ideas of acid techno but within a drum & bass framework. Genuinely unique.

  5. Chip Tronic - "Dunkel 18" (5:21)
Review: German label Bombtrap Records have been operating sublabel Stonedwave since 2006. Restless Breed 3.0 is the next issue; a various artists compilation on the label providing you with a new bunch of material, showcasing the label on all sides. From the harsh and rusty electro experiment by Sane entitled "The Hangover" which will appeal to fans of sounds on Lux Rec or Clan Destine, to the gutsy electro bass onslaught of Chordata's "Silent Singer" which goes straight for the jugular. On the flip, we are treated to two cuts by Jochem Heyn. The mysterious newcomer treats us to the melancholic IDM of "Floating Soul" (reminiscent of early Autechre) while Chip Trnics "Dunkel 18" was best described by the label themselves as 'dark techno rhythms for wonky minds who love it more distorted.'

The Two Legs EP (limited hand-stamped 12")
Cat: STAND. Rel: 28 Oct 13
  1. Augurs
  2. Black Sugar
  3. Phenomenon
  4. NGM
Review: One half of the Steven Porter duo, Katsunori Sawa, debuts solo on the Weevil Neighbourhood, a mysterious Berlin label borne out of the equally enigmatic, and now defunct, Weevil Series. Here Sawa delivers four tracks of industrial and experimental sound design, minus the ear shattering sonics and overbearing drone that other producers of a similar creed may employ. Windswept waves of white noise blow across "Augur" while its drums create a syncopated groove like that of injured beetle limping to safety. Piston pumping sound effects and factory ambience soundtrack "Black Sugar", while "Phenomenon" is the EP's most rhythmically coherent production. Sawa then ends on "NGM" which sounds like the night time hustle of New York city night heard from the empty viewing deck of the Empire State Building.

  4. Roll (Aritocrat P Child re-edit) (6:56)
Review: Emotional Response open the Secret Circuit archives to some of Eddie Ruscha's contemporaries from the City of Angels for a fine exercise in how to do a remix 12". First up is Suzanne Kraft, aka Diego Herrera who forms one half of Blase along with Ruscha; in his hands the crazy afro-stylings of "Afrobotics" are pulled towards the dancefloor, adding percussion and sirens, forging the originals vibes in to a ethno-beat club jam that is all about that heads down moment. Next up The Samps turns "Shockers" into a warped mesh of psychedelic dance, whilst Superior Elevation's Tom Noble adds some killer boogie vibes to "Underdogs". Finally Sun Araw man Cameron Stallones appears under rare alter-ego Aristrocrat P. Child to re-edit "Roll" in superb fashion.

Review: What do you get when you combine the enigmatic sounds of Shackleton's enchanted polyrhythms with the vocals of eccentric Italian performance artist Ernesto Tomasini? Devotional Songs, that's what. This intriguing collaboration presents itself four long playing tracks honoured with a side of vinyl each. The music itself sways from wind chimed ambient grooves and percussive tubular bells to theatrical synth pop. The D-side's "Father, You Have Left Me" is the most shamanic/demonic production on here, while "You Are The One" is a gentle, summery and cautiously upbeat affair. Like nothing else you'll hear this year, it's one for the record collection (not the hard drive) and it's an undeniable, truly singular collaboration.

Review: Sacha Khalife, or simply SHCAA, is a multi-talented electronic music producer from Paris. We know him well, however, namely due to an EP that cam out through NYC's Blank Slate back in 2015. Since then, he's put out one more EP through Archipel, but this is the first time we've welcomed him back onto our charts in 2017. Golconde comes through courtesy of the young Sharingtones imprint, and while this is billed as an EP, the release's 11 tracks give the impression of something much more accomplished. Fair enough, each tune is comparatively short to the usual album tracks, but the likes of "Kohinor", a bluesy, laid back slice of exotica, offer some truly deep vibes. Moreover, it's how each tune fits with the next that has got us hooked from the start, where SCHAA chucks in a subtle house blend like it's nothing, making tunes such as "Mimesis" feel like a natural course of events. On the B-side, this curious yet endlessly pleasing blend of acoustic guitars and tropical house waves continues, climaxing with a bottomless pit o minimalistic drones on "Maelstrom", followed by some glitchy IDM vibes on "Kert". Lush.

  2. See Through (East India Youth remix) (7:57)
Review: London-based Norwegian producer Sasha Siem receives the remix treatment for Blue Plum's latest outing; two tracks which featured on her recent Most Of The Boys LP, for the same label. First up, its house oddball Matthew Herbert who's called up for duty and he quickly proceeds to destroy "Proof" and transform it into a stumbling mass of bubbly low-ends, sparse percussion bursts and with Siem's own wailing vocals riding shotgun. On the flipside, we have East India Youth rewiring "See Through" into an eerie techno stepper backed by Siem's voice, except this time the words are processed into waves of atmpherics. Beautiful and deadly.

Review: The latest Blackest Ever Black release revisits "Tearing Down Heaven" by Six Six Seconds, a track that will be familiar to fans of the excellent 2012 Downwards compilation and a rare musical outburst from the band fronted by Claude Eden. With the arrival of "Tearing Down Heaven" in two slightly different versions on this 10" comes a bit more information about the origins of the track, with Eden laying down the recording in Berlin in 2012 with the assistance of DNS boss Karl O'Connor. For this new BEB edition, an extended version sits on the A-side, adding a further nine seconds whilst the reprise is a more drastic revision, embellishing the dronish qualities with breath-taking effect.

Review: Chicago's Hakim Murphy teams up with Lyon's Vince Noog as Slowmotion for the latest episode of the excellent Machining Dreams series - Murphy's own personal outlet. Lead track "Affaire De Familie" wonks and bleeps its way across metallic percussion shots and grizzly low-ends, while "Evasion Urbaine" is more melodic and heavy on the sci-fi pads. Finale "Le Grand Saut" ties things off with a squelchy feel, taking the duo's industrial beats into deep space. Fine hardware jams for the early hours as per usual from Machining Dreams.

Review: Former Blackstrobe man Ivan Smagghe (It's A Fine Line/Disques De La Mort) had teamed up with regular collaborator Rupert Cross on the MA LP for Vladimir Ivkovic's Offen Music earlier in 2017. These two tracks can be seen as an addendum of sorts to their wonderful album of ambient, drone and experimental electronics excursions. It was a departure from the disco-tinged remixes the pair were more known for and an impressive body of work which we'd recommend. On the A side we have the sublime free-synth journey of "Jazz" showing off some wonderful expressions of a lush patch, while on the flip things take a darker and noisier turn on the four minute thriller "Assassin De La Popcorn".

  6. Wind/Water (4:02)
Review: Fiery dynamics abound as Detroit's Snakepiss delivers a caustic six track document. Ranging from the paranoid and intense overlapping vocal samples of the angst-ridden "Blaze" to the slow-and-steady tribal thunder of "Our Love", each cut reveals a different shade of Snakepiss's sonic personality. There's anger here, but it's displayed conservatively and creatively; "Set Fire To The Living", for example, is an icy slice of electro that develops into such a rich groove you can't avoid the heat. The vocal texture on "Frig", meanwhile, sounds as if the devil has been sampled himself... And wrapped around a meditative cosmic sermon that would sit well in any daring disco set. Strike a light.

  6. Halo Heart (Asher Levitas remix)
Review: With a name that nods to My Bloody Valentine it's not surprising to hear a whisper of shoegaze sneaking into this debut single from Soft As Snow. As the latest signing to Houndstooth this release sits comfortably next to the gothic tinges of Snow Ghost, with vocalist Oda Egjar Starheim calling to mind Karin Dreijer Andersson of The Knife and Fever Ray fame. There's a canny mixture of noirish pop and expansive electronica, with the duo unafraid to embrace snappy time signature changes and bombastic choruses in amidst the more subtle elements of their sound. With five distinctive songs to announce themselves in addition to a remix from Old Apparatus alumni Asher Levitas, Glass Body is a powerful debut for an act set to tear up festival circuits in the near future.

  1. Separate From The Arc (Andrew Weatherall mix 1) (4:46)
  2. Separate From The Arc (Andrew Weatherall mix 2) (5:48)
Review: Those who picked up Solar Bears' recent Advancement album on Sunday Best will recognize "Separate From The Arc"; the track offered a deliciously triumphant end to a set crammed full of glistening ambient and IDM treats. Here, the track gets handed over to veteran producer Andrew Weatherall, who delivers two distinctive touch-ups. His first version drowsily joins the dots between skittering dancefloor jazz, string-drenched movie soundtracks, and the duo's twinkling original. Arguably even more impressive is "Mix 2", where Lord Sabre indulges his long-held love of beatbox electro, fusing those swirling strings and grandiose atmospherics with the kind of body-snapping beats that were once a feature of his early Two Lone Swordsmen work with Keith Tenniswood.
