  4. Jochen Heym - "The Final Transmission" (Chip Tronic remix) (4:32)
  5. Chip Tronic - "Dunkel 18" (5:21)
Review: German label Bombtrap Records have been operating sublabel Stonedwave since 2006. Restless Breed 3.0 is the next issue; a various artists compilation on the label providing you with a new bunch of material, showcasing the label on all sides. From the harsh and rusty electro experiment by Sane entitled "The Hangover" which will appeal to fans of sounds on Lux Rec or Clan Destine, to the gutsy electro bass onslaught of Chordata's "Silent Singer" which goes straight for the jugular. On the flip, we are treated to two cuts by Jochem Heyn. The mysterious newcomer treats us to the melancholic IDM of "Floating Soul" (reminiscent of early Autechre) while Chip Trnics "Dunkel 18" was best described by the label themselves as 'dark techno rhythms for wonky minds who love it more distorted.'

The Two Legs EP (limited hand-stamped 12")
Cat: STAND. Rel: 28 Oct 13
  1. Augurs
  2. Black Sugar
  3. Phenomenon
  4. NGM
Review: One half of the Steven Porter duo, Katsunori Sawa, debuts solo on the Weevil Neighbourhood, a mysterious Berlin label borne out of the equally enigmatic, and now defunct, Weevil Series. Here Sawa delivers four tracks of industrial and experimental sound design, minus the ear shattering sonics and overbearing drone that other producers of a similar creed may employ. Windswept waves of white noise blow across "Augur" while its drums create a syncopated groove like that of injured beetle limping to safety. Piston pumping sound effects and factory ambience soundtrack "Black Sugar", while "Phenomenon" is the EP's most rhythmically coherent production. Sawa then ends on "NGM" which sounds like the night time hustle of New York city night heard from the empty viewing deck of the Empire State Building.

  2. Shockers (The Samps remix) (5:28)

  4. Roll (Aritocrat P Child re-edit) (6:56)
Review: Emotional Response open the Secret Circuit archives to some of Eddie Ruscha's contemporaries from the City of Angels for a fine exercise in how to do a remix 12". First up is Suzanne Kraft, aka Diego Herrera who forms one half of Blase along with Ruscha; in his hands the crazy afro-stylings of "Afrobotics" are pulled towards the dancefloor, adding percussion and sirens, forging the originals vibes in to a ethno-beat club jam that is all about that heads down moment. Next up The Samps turns "Shockers" into a warped mesh of psychedelic dance, whilst Superior Elevation's Tom Noble adds some killer boogie vibes to "Underdogs". Finally Sun Araw man Cameron Stallones appears under rare alter-ego Aristrocrat P. Child to re-edit "Roll" in superb fashion.

  1. Furnace Of Guts (9:28)
  2. Wakefulness & Obsession (10:19)
Review: Should the mooted apocalypse ever arrive, any survivors would most likely stumble around the remains of civilization with a soundtrack of Shackleton records playing in their heads. There's something undeniably creepy about "Furnace of Guts", the ten minute title track of the producer's first release in 15 months. While its bustling, hypnotic, marimba style melodies are nominally quite beautiful, they're arranged in a particularly unsettling way, with the accompanying off-kilter tribal beats and doom-laden noises only serving to enhance the edgy, paranoid mood. He explores similarly hallucinatory pastures on marginally more cheery flipside "Wakefulness and Obsession", where more wonky melodic percussion comes smothered in gloopy electronics, choral chants, mind-mangling samples and bad-trip electronics.

Devotional Songs (gatefold double 12")

  1. Rinse Out All Contaminants (7:27)
  2. You Are The One (13:00)
  3. Twelve Shared Addictions (12:27)
  4. Father, You Have Left Me (10:14)
Review: What do you get when you combine the enigmatic sounds of Shackleton's enchanted polyrhythms with the vocals of eccentric Italian performance artist Ernesto Tomasini? Devotional Songs, that's what. This intriguing collaboration presents itself four long playing tracks honoured with a side of vinyl each. The music itself sways from wind chimed ambient grooves and percussive tubular bells to theatrical synth pop. The D-side's "Father, You Have Left Me" is the most shamanic/demonic production on here, while "You Are The One" is a gentle, summery and cautiously upbeat affair. Like nothing else you'll hear this year, it's one for the record collection (not the hard drive) and it's an undeniable, truly singular collaboration.

  9. Orloff (2:57)
  10. Maelstrom (4:48)
  11. Kert (5:38)
Review: Sacha Khalife, or simply SHCAA, is a multi-talented electronic music producer from Paris. We know him well, however, namely due to an EP that cam out through NYC's Blank Slate back in 2015. Since then, he's put out one more EP through Archipel, but this is the first time we've welcomed him back onto our charts in 2017. Golconde comes through courtesy of the young Sharingtones imprint, and while this is billed as an EP, the release's 11 tracks give the impression of something much more accomplished. Fair enough, each tune is comparatively short to the usual album tracks, but the likes of "Kohinor", a bluesy, laid back slice of exotica, offer some truly deep vibes. Moreover, it's how each tune fits with the next that has got us hooked from the start, where SCHAA chucks in a subtle house blend like it's nothing, making tunes such as "Mimesis" feel like a natural course of events. On the B-side, this curious yet endlessly pleasing blend of acoustic guitars and tropical house waves continues, climaxing with a bottomless pit o minimalistic drones on "Maelstrom", followed by some glitchy IDM vibes on "Kert". Lush.

Review: Shielding's Innerlig is viscous, densely detailed, trippy music. Dripping with texture, these are supple tunes that generously expand to fill whatever space they're in, loops stretching towards the lilac virtual horizon. Constantly mutating rhythms, heavily atmospheric grooves. RIYL Harmonious Thelonious, Jan Jelinek, Theo Parrish.

  1. Proof (Matthew Herbert thumb dub) (7:18)
  2. See Through (East India Youth remix) (7:57)
Review: London-based Norwegian producer Sasha Siem receives the remix treatment for Blue Plum's latest outing; two tracks which featured on her recent Most Of The Boys LP, for the same label. First up, its house oddball Matthew Herbert who's called up for duty and he quickly proceeds to destroy "Proof" and transform it into a stumbling mass of bubbly low-ends, sparse percussion bursts and with Siem's own wailing vocals riding shotgun. On the flipside, we have East India Youth rewiring "See Through" into an eerie techno stepper backed by Siem's voice, except this time the words are processed into waves of atmpherics. Beautiful and deadly.

Review: Chicago's Hakim Murphy teams up with Lyon's Vince Noog as Slowmotion for the latest episode of the excellent Machining Dreams series - Murphy's own personal outlet. Lead track "Affaire De Familie" wonks and bleeps its way across metallic percussion shots and grizzly low-ends, while "Evasion Urbaine" is more melodic and heavy on the sci-fi pads. Finale "Le Grand Saut" ties things off with a squelchy feel, taking the duo's industrial beats into deep space. Fine hardware jams for the early hours as per usual from Machining Dreams.

  5. Frig (1:21)
  6. Wind/Water (4:02)
Review: Fiery dynamics abound as Detroit's Snakepiss delivers a caustic six track document. Ranging from the paranoid and intense overlapping vocal samples of the angst-ridden "Blaze" to the slow-and-steady tribal thunder of "Our Love", each cut reveals a different shade of Snakepiss's sonic personality. There's anger here, but it's displayed conservatively and creatively; "Set Fire To The Living", for example, is an icy slice of electro that develops into such a rich groove you can't avoid the heat. The vocal texture on "Frig", meanwhile, sounds as if the devil has been sampled himself... And wrapped around a meditative cosmic sermon that would sit well in any daring disco set. Strike a light.

  1. Glass Body
  2. Halo Heart
  3. All Our Beasts
  4. Black Birds
  5. Drops Of Armour
  6. Halo Heart (Asher Levitas remix)
Review: With a name that nods to My Bloody Valentine it's not surprising to hear a whisper of shoegaze sneaking into this debut single from Soft As Snow. As the latest signing to Houndstooth this release sits comfortably next to the gothic tinges of Snow Ghost, with vocalist Oda Egjar Starheim calling to mind Karin Dreijer Andersson of The Knife and Fever Ray fame. There's a canny mixture of noirish pop and expansive electronica, with the duo unafraid to embrace snappy time signature changes and bombastic choruses in amidst the more subtle elements of their sound. With five distinctive songs to announce themselves in addition to a remix from Old Apparatus alumni Asher Levitas, Glass Body is a powerful debut for an act set to tear up festival circuits in the near future.

  1. Separate From The Arc (Andrew Weatherall mix 1) (4:46)
  2. Separate From The Arc (Andrew Weatherall mix 2) (5:48)
Review: Those who picked up Solar Bears' recent Advancement album on Sunday Best will recognize "Separate From The Arc"; the track offered a deliciously triumphant end to a set crammed full of glistening ambient and IDM treats. Here, the track gets handed over to veteran producer Andrew Weatherall, who delivers two distinctive touch-ups. His first version drowsily joins the dots between skittering dancefloor jazz, string-drenched movie soundtracks, and the duo's twinkling original. Arguably even more impressive is "Mix 2", where Lord Sabre indulges his long-held love of beatbox electro, fusing those swirling strings and grandiose atmospherics with the kind of body-snapping beats that were once a feature of his early Two Lone Swordsmen work with Keith Tenniswood.

Cat: ARV 002. Rel: 26 Feb 18
  1. Error Hash Mirror Mountain
  2. Sea Dweller
  3. Hypnagogo
  4. Fast Rubber Taxis
Review: Following the excellent OHM compilation, Glasgow's Ambidextrous label continues its forays into vinyl editions with this sterling EP from label regular Solipsism, aka Craig Murphy. With an energised, dynamic sound that positively bursts out of the speakers, Murphy is flying the flag for leftfield electronica coming out of Scotland. "Error Hash Mirror Mountain" has the kind of overloaded yet melodic sound that you might expect from early Nathan Fake, although the wooziness is replaced by a rabid punch that shakes your cerebellum. "Sea Dweller" by way of stark contrast dives into a low-slung trip hop vibe, and the smoked out mood continues with "Hypnagogo" on the flip. "Fast Rubber Taxis" is equally slow, but it sports a sassy rhythmic strut that sets it apart from the other two downtempo tracks.

Review: Having previously surfaced on the Filtered compilation for Bleep, John Flynn's Spaces project returns with more intricate and playful electronica for the Warp subsidiary that more solidly establishes him as an artist of note for anyone who enjoys a good glitch-out. "Apologies" works rapid fire fragments and occasional sweeps of big bass into a tricksy time signature arrangement, while "Outside In" takes a slightly more measured approach to crafty electro. "Lever" too works catchy elements into a slick and addictive funk, with plenty of interference to keep things out in leftfield, before "In Wait" rounds things off with a more twitchy affair bolstered by looping piano fragments and interesting atmospheric disturbances.

Review: Jack Adams, James Parker and Nino Pedone, or rather, Logos & Mumdance and Shapednoise, return as The Sprawl, an intergalactic unit of surrealist sound designers with a penchant for the unknown and the bizarre. Inspired by William Gibson, the creator of Cyberpunk, The Death Of Rave have landed a rather interesting project from this lot. Starting with "Burning Chrome", noise-riddled shards of percussion are twisted into abstract shapes before entering cinematic planes of harmonies; "Black Ice" further locks the patterns into something utterly imperceptible. "X System" delivers a Gabber-style punch of drums before mutating, once again, into something totally undefinable, and "Online Seance" wraps us in the cold touch of a computer programme, a deathly blanket recalling the cosier side of those pods in The Matrix.

Review: G-23 makes his debut under the Strange Audio Dreams moniker, coming through on Italy's young Art-Aud label with a sweltering two-tracker backed by two heavy remixes. "Error Design 1" is a break-driven jam that never truly drops into pool of nastiness, leaving you yearning more, while "Error Design 2" strips the beats in favour of glitchy field recordings and percussion-driven drones. Pan's NHK YX Koyxen remixes the former into a wonky bit of brain dynamite, pushing those breaks in and out his melodic waves, Cardopusher makes a deep techno roll out of the same original tune. All in all, a rather essential piece of gear.

  1. Cosmic Chords One (8:59)
  2. Cosmic Chords Two (9:27)
Review: The Sun God aka Hieroglyphic Being aka Jamal Moss is a difficult guy to keep up with, that's for damn sure. Spreading his signature trademark of gritty, fuzzed out pseudo-techno across so many aliases and labels, it's as if the dude is making music 24/7. For his latest excursion Mr. Moss appears as The Sun God - a tribute name to his idol Sun Ra - for Copenhagen's always-on-the-money Cejero imprint. The A-side, "Cosmic Chords One", is classic Moss with its stumbling, alcoholic drum pattern and beautifully distorted chords - one of his finest moments and surely the winner from this year, so far. The B-side, "Cosmic Chords Two" continues Moss' devious sounds but takes them onto more distant plateaus, where the beats have now fallen into place and the synths have taken a less abstract form. Warmly recommended.
