  3. Turnip (3:53)
Review: Basement Jaxx's Atlantic Jaxx label might have been relatively more dormant over recent years, but we are in no way, shape or form fit to contest its mighty heritage, a history of timeless electronic releases that stretches back to the late 1990s. We're also glad to see them branching out a bit more and finding new talent, with this wild and unpredictable EP by Planet Battagon providing some much needed oddity in our lives. "Inside Out" is a wonky burst of synths and beats, while "Like You Like Me" feels like a new form of minimal techno with an outsider approach. "Turnip" is a healthy slice of electronica to sign off this sublime little EP in fine style. Top!

Review: With roots and stripes in the classic world, the ambient world (as Kollaps) and the bass world, Prayer fuses elements his peers would never dare. Here we find him making his Black Acre debut with four mesmerising cuts that span the musical cosmos; the overlapping, strangely metered cascades of "Alone", the cathedral stepper "Decline", the surging jungle hurricane "Seeing" closing with the breath-taking orchestral string sweeps of "First Light". Someone pass this man a film to score.

Review: The mysterious Pry turns in some sludgy, dank and dust covered house/techno on this inaugural release for the Union imprint. It sits somewhere between the analogue sonic wizardry of early Mathew Jonson and the dusty attic house of Brooklynites such as Patricia or J. Albert. Opening cut "Shift Loop" features textural modular sounds that are swept through the rapid-fire ping-pong effect of a tape delay. Next he darkly reduced tunnel vision of "Nil Movement" has you sorted for heads down/contemplative moments on the dancefloor. Union is a newly born label from the UK that's geared towards releasing electronic experimental music, infusing techno's functionality with explorative synthesis and sonic manipulation. The artwork created by esteemed designer Alex McCullough creates a complimentary fusion alongside the record.

  3. Acid Rescue (13:50)
Review: As Psynote, Argentine producer Franco Cinelli released a couple of quietly impressive 12" singles in 2013 and 2014, but the project has lain dormant ever since. Here he re-launches it via a rather impressive return to the mighty Chiwax. Arguably the highlight is flipside "Acid Rescue", a formidably hypnotic dub techno outing rich in angular electronic pulses that runs for 14 mesmerizing minutes. That said, we're also enjoying Cinelli's A-side outings, where spacey and lo-fi electro jam "Noise Invaders" - check the wild synth solos and pitch-bend action - is followed by the deep space bleeps and sweaty ghetto-tech drums of "Cosmic War".

Review: New Sydney-based label Deep Seeded has a clear mission to subvert conventions about club music, and new signing ptwiggs is right in there with the kind of otherworldly grime weirdness that you might find around the likes of Visionist, Rabit and other such sonic tinkerers. There's plenty of brutality at work on "Day Of Wrath", while "Exuviae" aims for something airier while getting sideswiped by distortion and trance leads. There are calmer moments, but it doesn't take long for intense levels of sound design, sampling and raucous processing to shake up the situation.

Review: Simona Faraone's New Interplanetary Melodies raises the heat with Marcell Napoletano's Ra Toth & The Brigante's Orchestra project's first full EP "Acid Sea". A vivid hybrid experiment, the troupe flip between moments of frenzied confusion and otherworldly dizziness on tracks such as the gritty, distorted, aquatic acid title track and the horn-melting time-bender "System Desease" to much more conventional groove experimentation such as the slinky, woozy jam "Nico's Bass". Climaxing with the theremin-warping one-way trip into space that is "Marciolamenti", it's a remarkable trip that's layered in detail and convention-challenging phrases. Dig deep.

  3. Astrovibe (7:42)
Review: Enrico Mantini and Pepe Villalba already made a sterling start with the Purism label, and now it's time for Retro Activity to step up with some striking diversions from the standard minimal house template. Drums are the order of the day on "SK-1", and what drums they are - loose, limber, expressive rhythms in a funked up, breakbeat style but certainly not any of the over-familiar breaks you're used to. "Venera 8" is a cosmic trip laden with spaced out FX wobbles and a rubbery bassline, and "Astrovibe" takes things in a stellar techno direction with sumptuous arpeggios and classic Detroit-flavoured drum machine flair.

  2. Wrecked (3:11)
  3. Fluid (3:50)
Review: Following up 2016's dynamic Plum LP on his Brunette Editions imprint, New York City based producer John Roberts returns with a release that he best described himself as 'a series of songs written and destroyed. Self-cannibalized productions spit back out in abnormal silhouettes.' Indeed, it's quite the departure from the dusty and evocative deep house he produced on Hamburg imprint Dial a while back - in particular his well received debut Glass Eights in 2010. "Spill" is an unholy mixture of neo-classical, experimental lo-fi techno and guitar drones - that isn't altogether unpleasant. On the flip, be captivated by the bittersweet ambient house of "Wrecked" and the ethereal peace "Fluid" composed of powerful blasts of distortion and sombre trumpets.

  1. Uncertain Grace (Vilod Aka Ricardo Villalobos & Max Loderbauer remix) (10:48)
  2. Lenina (Ricardo Villalobos remix) (12:47)
Review: Previously, Ricardo Villalobos and Max Loderbauer have delivered some deliciously epic remixes that sound more like freestyle electronic jazz epics than stripped-back minimal techno chuggers. It's perhaps fitting, then, that they've been given a chance to rework two tracks from Swedish jazz drummer-turned-electronic experimentalist Samuel Ruhrer's recent album, Range of Regularity. Together the Berlin-based duo tackles "Uncertain Grace", creating a mind-altering concoction rich in frazzled electronic pulses, chiming melodies, delay-laden drum hits and deep-sea textures. Villalobos goes solo on the flip to lay down a typically intoxicating, off kilter, acid-flecked minimal techno interpretation of "Lenina". The Chilean keeps things fresh by incorporating fluttering flute passages and broken electronics.

Review: High Ends returns with an EP by Thomas Romain and his mother: famed free jazz pianist Christine Wodrascka. Christine's style is wholly unique: there are no barriers for her sonic exploration. Sound matter, energy, forms, architecture and emotion all play a part in shaping the style of one the most unique musicians out there. In his own irregular style, Thomas adds a sense of swing to his mother's improvisations. This fusion of acoustic and electronic creates wholly original experimental journeys which will delight the auditory senses of those listening. All these aesthetics are translated into opening track "Tribute To Parmegiani" where the track's namesake just happened to pass away on the day it was produced. It receives a sublime and hypnotic remix up next by Tobias Freund (Ostgut Ton).

Review: Suction Records takes a fourth and final dive into the cassette archives of RX-101, AKA '90s bedroom producer Erik Jong. As was the case with the three previous EPs in the series, all six tracks were recorded between 1997 and '99. Once again, there are gems aplenty, from the vintage IDM of opener "Themis" (all Autechre rhythms, AFX chords and dizzying intergalactic melodies) and overwhelmingly rush-inducing brilliance of "Saiph", to the ghostly alien electro of "Reflected Ray" and chiming, early morning innocence of closer "The Quest For Ganymede". Quite why these tracks remained unissued for so long remains a mystery, but we're certainly happy that Jong has finally made them available.

They invited six artists to contribute a track on Second Wave - a collection that showcases electronic music dwelling on the outer limits. From S. Olbricht & Abris Gryllus' immersive ambient journey entitled "Trood", the frantic polyrhythmic madness of "Kalimbopolis" by Berlin by way of New York City's M.E.S.H, the lo-fi darkwave electro of Privacy's "No Discussion" and Daniel McCormick aka Ital aka Releaxer's epic rave reconstruction The Enemy Within".

  3. Maria (feat Pascale)
Review: Sainte Vie has been working away in the Mexican underground for some time, running Akumandra as a free, digital-only label to help promote all kinds of electronic music. Now it's time for Vie to step up with their first outright release, first time on wax, and hence a new era for the label. The tone is varied across the record, leading in with the worldly drum rattle and string strum of "Huracan", a whirlwind of drama and hand-played musicianship that stands out from the crowd. "Albatross" is a more introspective cut that brings Vie's vocals to the forefront, and then "Maria" chills things out further with a haunting vocal from Pascale and some delicate finger picking guitar delights over a dynamic set of drums.

Review: KDC digs deep into the satanic study of angles and ratios with his latest Auxiliary exploration. "Atonement" is an industrial strength snowplough cutting through mountains of ice with a high end riff that buzzes over the hammering, bucking drums while "Summoned" takes what could conventionally be a Funk D'Void-style house groove before turning it inside out with a low end drone that grows incessantly, washing out the original groove. "Vertex" plays the role of conjurer with its pertinent hi-hat shaking and scuffing over a deep sea bass/kick arrangement while "Clairvoyance" updates some of the ideas of acid techno but within a drum & bass framework. Genuinely unique.

Review: German label Bombtrap Records have been operating sublabel Stonedwave since 2006. Restless Breed 3.0 is the next issue; a various artists compilation on the label providing you with a new bunch of material, showcasing the label on all sides. From the harsh and rusty electro experiment by Sane entitled "The Hangover" which will appeal to fans of sounds on Lux Rec or Clan Destine, to the gutsy electro bass onslaught of Chordata's "Silent Singer" which goes straight for the jugular. On the flip, we are treated to two cuts by Jochem Heyn. The mysterious newcomer treats us to the melancholic IDM of "Floating Soul" (reminiscent of early Autechre) while Chip Trnics "Dunkel 18" was best described by the label themselves as 'dark techno rhythms for wonky minds who love it more distorted.'

  4. NGM
Review: One half of the Steven Porter duo, Katsunori Sawa, debuts solo on the Weevil Neighbourhood, a mysterious Berlin label borne out of the equally enigmatic, and now defunct, Weevil Series. Here Sawa delivers four tracks of industrial and experimental sound design, minus the ear shattering sonics and overbearing drone that other producers of a similar creed may employ. Windswept waves of white noise blow across "Augur" while its drums create a syncopated groove like that of injured beetle limping to safety. Piston pumping sound effects and factory ambience soundtrack "Black Sugar", while "Phenomenon" is the EP's most rhythmically coherent production. Sawa then ends on "NGM" which sounds like the night time hustle of New York city night heard from the empty viewing deck of the Empire State Building.
