Decadance (12")
Cat: FOX 002EP. Rel: 11 Sep 17
  1. Decadance (original 1989 version) (8:08)
  2. Decadance (Snuffo 2017 reinvention) (6:29)
Review: "Decadance" by Croatian industrial wonder-group NEP was first released all the way back in 1988, when all things post-punk were steering towards the dancefloor. The original tune resided on the band's one and only tape, Nova Evropa, which was technically put out in Yugoslavia, and had to be one of the country's few industrial releases that year. These guys, however, were both radical and chic - a dangerous blend. The lead tune itself is largely indescribable in terms of genres, using electro as the core channel to fuel its mystical and drugged-out cocktail of sonics. There's a 2017 remix on the B-side, produced by Snuffo, who adds a little 4/4 bounce to the original's nutty selection of industrial mechanics and oddball samples.

  1. Wrottersley Road
  2. Wrottersley Road (Invisible Hands remix)
  3. Wrottersley Road (The Oscillation remix)
  4. Wrottersley Road (Invisible Hands reprise)
Review: The latest Emotional Response release provides something very special indeed, in the form of a new track from under the radar psychedelic rock musician Nick Nicely. Nicely has been making music from the 70s onwards, but his music has recently undergone something of a critical reappraisal, with the likes of Robert Wyatt and Robyn Hitchcock supposedly inspired by his work; "Wrottersley Road" provides the ideal entry into his music, a masterful piece of shoegaze pop filled with fuzzed out guitars and Eastern psychedelic tones. Remixes are provided by Invisible Hands, who provide a minimal 80's inspired electro-pop version, which comes saturated in radiophonic textures, and The Oscillation, who take the track into even more abstract ambient territory than the original, deep into a place where time seems to stand still entirely, drawing its rich textures out into infinity.

Shackleton Remixes (hand-stamped vinyl 12")
Cat: SEPTICHEARTREMIX 1. Rel: 04 Feb 15
  1. A' (remix)
  2. B-1' (remix)
Review: A brief respite from the Deliverance series on Woe To The Septic Heart as label boss and all round bad man Shackleton presents some surprise remixes of Nisennenmondai. Issued to coincide with the Japanese dance-punk trio's recent performance at the CTM festival in Berlin, this no frills hand stamped white 12" is strictly about the music! The A side remix captures your attention immediately, as dramatic barrage of high octane synth arpeggios appears out of nowhere within seconds of the needle dropping, pressure building until breaking point where Shackleton relieves the tension by dropping into some punkish wave percussion. From here the track mutates in a way that delights constantly. The B side remix is a less intense ride, but just as impressive. Do not sleep!

  4. Alpha & Omega (6:04)
Review: Sheffield's Central Processing Unit return with Andriy Vezdenko aka Andrew Noumen: an experimental electronic producer from Lviv, Ukraine who describes himself as composer, sound researcher, artist, designer and performer. He debuts for the label with his LP titled Apeiron this year and "White Silence" is the first single taken from the album; a broken hi-tech mindbender that is reminiscent of Surgeon's work in recent times; we really enjoyed this trip where its splintered and mangled rhythms intersect with hypnotic chime melodies. The off kilter IDM shenanigans continue on the glitchy and hyper aware bodybasher "Fear" while on "Alpha & Omega" he does his best impression of Tri Repatae era Autechre. Quality stuff from this label as always and highly recommended.

  1. Stretch Your Eyes (Quiet Village remix) (9:19)
  2. Stretch Your Eyes (ambient acappella) (6:05)
Review: Copenhagen's Agnes Obel is no newcomer to the enlarged electronic scene thanks to a handsome package of previous releases for the mighty PIAS, an imprint responsible for all sorts of reissues throughout the 2000's and, of course, plenty of electronic crossover which have gone onto establishing new genres and styles. The surprise is that London's Phonica has decided to pick her brain for the sixth instalment of their Special Edition series, a corner of the label reserved for the more cerebral end of the 'house' and 'tech' domain. In fact, the A-side's remix of "Stretch Your Eyes" by Quiet Village is a deep and incandescent trip through sliding percussions and cavernous swells of electronic fuzz, sounding something like Burial and Bjork put together. Fantastic stuff. The 'ambient' mix of the same tune, on the B-side, dissolves the beats into an aqueous haze of melting vocals and hollow waves, offering a delightfully kinetic approach to the usually rhythm-empty take on drone. Lovely.

  3. Pneuquonsis On Return (Quinoline Yellow remix)
  4. Fewton Tension Kords (Adapta remix)
Review: It's refreshing to hear some proper electronica once in a while, and Andrea Parker's Aperture looks set to make a welcome return if this package of remixes of the shadowy Oberman Knocks is anything to go by. Plaid are on excellent, darkside form with their version of "Degonnt Type Runners", sounding moodier than they have done in a long time. Uexkull (formerly of Bitstream) brings the multi-layered electro pressure with aplomb, while Quinoline Yellow carries on his innately Skam-sounding vibes. Adapta rounds tings off with a decidedly Drexciyan version that puts most electro pretenders to shame.

Review: New label Kontrapunkt's mission is to present diverse music that spans from world music infused house, hard hitting & lo-fi techno through to considered ambient music. With the latter in mind, the Leipzig based label indeed makes a journey into that field of electronic music for their second release. Here, French producer Octave Diesis delivers an album full of melancholic yet thoughtful neoclassical songs. The songs live mostly from the enigmatic piano melodies paired with some well-thought synthesizer sounds he composed. Expect ambient environments and dramatic, soothing layers. A truly splendid debut release.

  1. Oklo Gabon - "City Gym" (Lena Willikens remix) (5:25)
  2. RRoxymore - "Ministry Of Silly Talks" (Lena Willikens remix) (6:22)
Review: Here's something to set the pulse racing: a pair of thrilling new Lena Willikens remixes of tracks from the Huntleys & Palmers' back catalogue. She begins by taking on Oklo Gabon's muscular electro-disco smasher "City Gym" from 2015's Chapter 2 compilation, reinventing the mystery producer's original as a creepy chunk of horror-informed EBM (think undulating synthesizer melodies, foreboding bass and clanking drum machine percussion). On the flip, the Salon Des Amateurs resident re-interprets Rroxymore's 2014 cut "Ministry of Silly Talks", craftily turning it into a stylish and occasionally unsettling chunk of analogue-rich EBM hypnotism. As you'd expect, it rises and falls in all the right places, with Willikens wringing every ounce of atmosphere from Rroxymore's wavering synthesizer lines.

Review: Harem is the fourth release for Old Apparatus on their own Sullen Tone imprint, and the third to come from an individual member of the collective. This time it's the turn of Harem, who also lends their name to the release and provides one of the label's most atmospheric releases to date. "Sunday Service" places spectral female vocals in a desolate soundscape, while "Mernom" continues the funereal atmospherics with lumbering beats and acoustic instrumentation placed within a vast echo chamber. "Dourado" offers the most propulsive cut of the EP, with galloping drums and deep subs providing a steampunk take on classic dubstep, leaving "Octafish" to round off another superlative EP with a brooding combination of scorched strings and distant, simmering percussion.

  4. Realise
Review: The second release of Old Apparatus's Sullen Tone imprint sees the first of a trilogy in which a whole record is given over to a different member of the collective. It's still attributed to Old Apparatus, but the difference audible across Realise is stark; although opener "Chicago" still growls and lurches like the alternate reality dubstep of their previous releases, its piano riff and 4/4 beat references the house music of its namesake, while the percussion of "Found" rattles like a steampunk pinball machine. "Holding" meanwhile sounds like a combination of Druqks-era Aphex Twin and King Tubby dub, funnelling tight D&B breakbeats through cavernous brass, and closer "Realise" stacks layer upon layer of atmospheric pressure on its funereal clockwork motions.

Review: Given that One Circle is formed the trio of Editions Mego artist Lorenzo Senni, Monkeytown artist Vaghe Stelle and soundtrack composer A:RA, their debut for the consistently excellent left_blank label is as skewed a trip into experimental techno's wormhole as you'd expect from such a union. Whether it's the ectoplasmic Kompakt vibes of title track "Flight To Forever", the stuttering rhythms and euphoric synths of "Delta City" or the Fade To Mind grime via Eurosynth of "Please", there's enough here to make One Circle well worth a look for inquisitive electronic minds.

Review: It would in no way be a bold statement to say that Oneohtrix Point Never is both one of the most interesting minds in the contemporary experimental music game and one of our very favourite electronic artists. His catalogue speaks for itself and this latest RSD release for the mighty Warp Records is just a taste of the man's diversity as a musician and sound manipulator. "Bullet Hell Abstraction I" is basically a hardcore metal track that has been processed and taken off course to become an ultra-fast-paced jungle missile, while "Bullet Hell Abstraction III" is all crystal drones and noisy bursts of ambience. On the flip, "Suite From Magnetic Rose" winds things down into an anthemic bundle of choral vocals and sci-fi electronics...a truly startling head-trip into the ether.

Review: French label Desire spark up a full working relationship with pioneering producer Konrad Becker here following his commission to remix Ike Yard and their reissued edition of Monotonprodukt 07, his seminal early 80s album under the Monoton alias. Operations is Becker's latest creative endeavour and this four track Possession EP finds him operating in the crawlspace between synth pop, electronica and dub, seemingly exploring themes of a spectral nature with the assistance of vocalist Sela. Described by Desire as linking "21st century technology to ancient communication practices," the project is as political as it is dancefloor-focused and makes for compelling listening.

Review: There's not much info on the ground regarding this new Paid Reach label, but the involvement of one Gunnar Wendel will mean there are plenty out there wanting to check it out. First surfacing towards the end of Lowtec's great RA 439 podcast for Resident Advisor last year, Paid Reach is described as a "collaboration" with Wendel's Ominira label and features two tracks "edited and produced" by Wendel. Both "Fair Trade Dark" and "Colddrinksnreverse" exist at the more abstract end of the electronic music scale, with the former little more than playfully toying with a modulated loop. "Colddrinksnreverse" meanwhile is around three minutes of phased and phucked vocal samples. Excellent mixtape material basically.

Review: This is the unique sound of respected experimentalist (Florian Meyer AKA Don't DJ) colliding with psy-trance veteran Volker Wiesmann AKA Paraklang) via an interest in the more unchartered polyrhythmic territories. "Chuwangk Kyuh Hay" is the most tribal and floor-focused of the collection with its rounded drums ricocheting and playing off each other. "N Bun Kan Kan" takes a slight side-step to the left of the dance with its dizzying layers of percussion while "Gonyungk Wadt" is a complete flip into sound design territory. Prepare for audio illusions.

Review: After an uncompromising set of EPs for the justifiably hyped Ancient Monarchy label, which helped to take the imprint out of the deep underground and into the mainstream, Soundman Chronicles' DJ Parris lands on London's mighty Hemlock to deliver yet more of his impressionistic take on house and techno. What we love about this guy is that we never know what we're gonna get from him, and these three tunes are a perfect example of that: "Your Kiss Is Sour" is made up of rotating synth echoes that flutter in and out of heavy bass pulses whereas, on the flip, "Flowering In Threes" adds a little house sensitivity to a similarly aqueous range of atmospherics, while "My Beautiful Fantasy" offers the oddball of the lot, or rather, the one tune that will surely get the heads nodding their head up and down thanks to that dub-leaning bass riding in its underbelly.

  2. No God Ritual - "Understanding Is Compression" (9:07)
Review: Athens-based Hypermedium label got off to a cracking start last year thanks to a debut release by Evol. They're back now with a double-header by the emerging electronic duo Patino and No God Ritual, the former hailing from Spain and the latter being a Greek compatriot to the label heads. Patino's A side, "Strategies On Self Promotion & Autoreferentiality" explores the blurred lines between archaic electronics and noise music, creating a delightful groove out of basic elements which, together with a methodical arrangement, sound playful and compelling. No God Ritual resides on the flipside, and his "Understanding Is Compression" follows a similarly loose, bric-a-brac style of production that blends a myriad of different styles and moods together under one groove...or something that represents one. Whatever you want to label it as, we think it's some seriously dope material.

Review: Electronic pop act Penelope are the second release on fellow Swede Pjotr's label. The band offers up three 'dystopian pop songs' spanning from the futuristic, villainous R&B of "What I Gotta Do" to the trance-filled breakbeat of "Rattlesnake". Saarbrucken's finest Roger 23 delivers two versions of the title track; the "Under Influence Of Red Nasty Nyponsoppa Disco mix" is a dark and strobed-out epic while the second (Controversy Turning dirty Super dub) is jacking analogue house that would make even Jamal Moss or John Heckle stand up and notice. The killer EP closes out with a droning hypnotic techno version of "Rattlesnake" (Physical Therapy Watersports On Hard Surfaces Only mix).

Review: New Italian label Hiroshima 45 Chernobyl 86 Windows 95 present Pubblicazione 001. Starting off on the A side is Penelope's Fiance from Thessaloniki, who serves up a lo-fi and coldwave perspective of the Boards Of Canada on "Run & Gun", while Italians Rawmance and Security team up on the slo-mo EBM mutation of "Un Bon Flic" - bringing you the sound of latter's Knick Knack Yoda burger club in Rome. On the flip, Mannequin boss Alessandro Adriani gives us the gnarly 303 acid epic "Do Not Deliver Me Into The Enemy's Hands" and Raw Ambassador aka Antonio Barbetta gives us the early industrial sounds of "Attack, Attack!" with its rusty aesthetic calling to mind the classics of Portion Control or Skinny Puppy.
