Unwavering EP
Cat: SPACES 002. Rel: 15 Feb 21
  1. False Prophets (6:02)
  2. Approaching Events (6:26)
  3. Historical Synopsis (6:58)
  4. Unwavering (6:31)
Review: For their second release, the Dublin-based label Space Shepherd follows through with this killer EP by D&S - comprised of two Dutch young men named Dennis and Stephan. Here the Rotterdam-based duo present four live jams produced entirely on hardware and taking in influences from Detroit as well as early British IDM. We were really feeling the futuristic aesthetic of high tech soul epic 'Approaching Events', the ominous electro sci-fi of 'Historical Synopsis' and the emotional sunset breaks of the title track - which ended this riveting EP on a perfect note.

Review: Having spent the best part of six years serving up occasional singles for the likes of MinT tea and Random Recordings, Jon Chmielewski finally delivered his debut album, Aquatic Observations, last year. Clearly in a hot creative street, he's now followed it up with a similarly impressive mini album that comes pressed onto silver vinyl. In keeping with his typically intergalactic, deep space style, the six collected cuts join the dots between soundscape electro, Drexciya-inspired club cuts, melody-driven electronica, and the kind of listenable IDM that made Warp Records famous during the Artificial Intelligence era. As a result, Silver Lining of a Rain Cloud makes for mighty fine listening.

Review: Bigeneric aka Marco Repetto is a legendary producer who returns to the same Swiss label that put out his The Compilation album three years ago. This time out the man of many different allies (Planet Love, Sinbiotik, Marco Repetto) assembles a vital bundle of beautiful and well preserved techno and ambient tracks that make for a cohesive listen and were all produced between 1995 and 1999. Some are delightfully light and airy, others dark and moody, others caustic and textured.

  9. Ruckstoss Gondoliere (11:32)
  10. Tanzmusik (3:40)
Review: We are always excited when a vinyl reissue of German legends Kraftwerk comes in, and so should you! Some of their earliest and most seminal recordings are compiled here on Collection, such as 'Ruckzuck', 'Megaherz' and 'Vom Himmel Hock' which are taken from the band's 1970 debut release ('Silver Forest' appeared as a bonus track on some other versions), the exclusive 'Kakteen, Wuste, Sonne' is taken from a previously unofficial release the next year, and there's the addition of the much sought after rarity 'Ruckstoss Gondoliere'.

AUX 4425

  2. Predy (4:47)
  3. Rapido (5:56)
  4. Luw (6:07)
  5. Ftr00001 (4:38)
  6. Chidm (5:33)
  7. Flaer (6:32)
  8. The Braex (5:01)
Review: Experienced IDM explorer Omni Causa has a track record for releasing records in limited numbers, though we can't remember one quite as scarce as this. Only 100 copies of Aux4425, his third full-length excursion, have been pressed, meaning you'll have to act fast to secure one. It's well worth the effort though, because the shadowy producer's trademark blend of woozy motifs, meandering melodies, distant-sounding electronics, spaced out beats and nostalgic refrains remains as alluring as ever. Highlights include the drowsy 'Predy', the genuinely joyous 'Rapido', the semi-droning eccentricity of 'Flaer' and the crystalline atmospherics of 'The Braex'.

Simulacra (180 gram 2xLP)

  1. Contracultura
  2. Aura
  3. Fulcra
  4. Schema
  5. Observa (feat Ntem)
  6. Tundra (feat Saba)
  7. Recognitia (feat Ntem & Saba)
Review: It may have taken him 25 years and countless 12"s, but finally, Silverlining has delivered his first ever artist album. In keeping with his trademark style, the album's seven cuts - which explore themes of dependence on misrecognised digital identities, and the importance of real world tangibility - are smothered in spacey synth sounds, chunky, dub-fuelled bass and warped electronics. Interestingly, it's a lot more musically diverse than many might expect. There are a number of typically intergalactic excursions powered by punchy electro beats (see 'Observa (featuring Ntem)' and 'Contraculture'), cuts that doff a cap to classic deep house and US garage ('Aura', 'Schema'), an acid-flecked deep space proto-house jam ('Tundra'), and even a head-nodding trip-hop workout ('Recognitia'). Terrific stuff, all told."
