Review: Humanoid Recordings co-founder 4d lays down another four-track 12" for the label, scouring the weightier and scrapier ends of minimal and acid house, all while teasing out a retro-robotic edge. Only an artist with a real sense of humour can invoke ideas of 'Stupidity' and 'Quantum Theory' in the same breath; both tracks betray the unified whimsy and intelligence that a successful acid house and techno artist must portray in order to win hearts. The latter uses a particularly sticky, hard-to-pin-down 4x4 kick style; contrast to B1 'World In Our Head', which portrays a psychic model of the outside world through trilling trance lines, and the meek glissandos of 'Sowie Lockers', securing an indeterminate but funky mood.

Review: Remastered and reissued with new a new album cover via the Clone West Coast Series, Adult's 'New Phonies' EP first appeared in 2000 as the duo moniker of Nicola Kuperus and Adam Lee Miller, two legit electro stalwarts. This is a proper snappy electro EP - of the least sympathetic and most coldly calculating kind - evoking the fright of becoming trapped inside an inescapable subliminal-sonic cybernetic feedback loop, with all human faculties thrown to the wayside. 'Hand To Phone', for example, locks us into a communicative-cybernetic stasis, with spitty acid 16ths betraying the mood of becoming affective chasers of electromagnetic signals, unwittingly carrying out the bidding of our new techno-evangelist overlords. The A-sider 'New Object', meanwhile, with its sizzling 808s, transitional fluctuations and hip-hop vocal refrain - "I need you to accommodate my comunication needs" - touches on several layers of objectification at once: sexual, commodification, loss of the ability to speak. Adult truly dealt with adult themes and embraced their recapture into the machine - now you too can own their New Object.

Review: RFXN kicks off life with a new single from David Agrella which has seen early support from Ricardo Villalobos. First off he offers up his own Acid Mix of 'Perro Balearico' and it's a supple, deep and dubby track with liquid synths and prog chords that sound both retro and future all at once. The original is a more dreamy and spaced-out sound for 5 am sessions. On the flip is a more punch but still silky and warmly melodic remix from Mario Liberti before last of all, Gabriel Rai gets darker. His drums hit harder and the synths are moodier as he takes dancers down a late-night path of mystery and intrigue.

Review: Brixton-based David Agrella returns after the success of his Baby Ford-remixed 'Modulo 02', with two tracks and a nifty remix of each to boot. 'I Felt It Coming' is a heady peak time track, with Underground Resistance-style drum machine handclaps and an addictive synth hook and all the suspense and drama of a Stephen King horror tale. Domenico Rosa's remix turns that frown upside down, converting it into a perky, cheeky and altogether lighter workout that nevertheless will keep feet on the dancefloor. 'Reflexion Nocturna' (Priori remix) kicks off the B-side with fizzling dub techno stealth, subtly embellished with a smidgeon of 'Funky Drummer' breakbeat, while Agrella's original closes proceedings with head down, echo-set Leftfield-style prog house skank. Not for nothing is this chap known as one of the techno scene's fastest rising new names.

'Initiate Experiment' is no slouch either, precision tooled for punchy effectiveness on the floor. Alex Jann tips some tripped-out processing on top of his own tightly wound, motorik sequences on 'Mind Control Uses', while 'Punish Room' plays around with some artful spatial sound design on the edges of this steadfast electro workout.

Review: Otherwise known as Doc Bozique and fresh from a reissue album on Cosmic Soup, Howard Dodd's work as Anoesis has been well and truly revived and progressed out of the archival realm into actual new productions. On this record for Cyphon, we're treated to more of the elegantly warped, subliminal machine funk associated with Anoesis since his cult mid-90s releases, veering from the deep-tracking sonar techno of 'Track Thirty 7' to the Guidance-ready bump of Callisto, which must surely be a tribute to the legendary house producer. Given his considerable history exploring the outer limits of machine funk, you'll be pleased to know this new single offers another two excursions into parts unknown that shirk the formulaic tendencies of so much contemporary electro. 'Shuiler' opens the record up in a shimmer of high-definition synth lines tipped towards melancholic braindance and perfectly suited to warm-up hours or the afters alike. Review: The mysterious and unknown Betdat's first EP has landed on the amazing techno and electro label Frustrated Funk, with 'Supercell' showcasing some of the most futuristic electro cuts laid to wax. Review: It appears to be relatively early days for Philip Biedermann, who kicked off his label The Machine Dream in 2022 with his debut release. However, as is evident on his second drop, there's a canny blend of sincerity in his vintage sound which speaks to a longer investment in analogue techno. The composition and arrangement on 'Cybernetics' in particular has a dramatic tension which lends itself to the warm, seedy characteristics of the synths which make the track. The vibe maintains across the EP, with 'Digital Emotions' tipping towards electro without ever resorting to obvious tropes. Biedermann has a synth-rich sound all his own, ensuring his tracks will be easy to spot in the mix.

Review: Spanish electro stalwart Boris Divider is back on his own Drivecom label with another masterful demonstration of the synapse tickling sound he's been perfecting for nearly 20 years. 'Your Light' is a dramatic, tense affair with cinematic overtones but that doesn't detract from the punchy, floor-ready effectiveness of the track. It's left to the 'Variant Version' to head further out with a beatless excursion driven by cascading arps. Review: Chris Carrier is a long-time part of the underground. The Frenchman has released on a fine array of labels and served up plenty of ever-evolving sounds. For this one he digs into electro, tech, house and minimal starting with the praying loops and intergalactic turbulence of 'The Infinity Gate.' It's a noisy and intense one for the peak of the night while 'The Way To The Stars' is a more smooth grooving tune with nimble drums and bass. 'The Roaming' then rides on a bumping drum and bass comb that is run through with sleek and searching synth rays and last of all 'Spacevax' offers a clean and crisp electro-tinged beat on which to vibe while the sci-fi chords rain down from above with real elegance.

Review: First released in 2006, 'Ceerial Port' is the ultimate wildcard in the electro profligate Ceephax's towering discography. The seven-or-eight track album does things with the electro form that few of Mr. Jenkinson's contemporaries would dare ever indulge, were it not for this initial fatherly stamp of approval. lead reissue cut 'Acid Whorl' is the foremost case in point, hard-limiting and soft-clipping a cyclonic 'whorlwind' of pitch-whacked acid effluence. They find the New York-based producer in scintillating form with opener ' Onyourmarks' fusing jungle and electro with masterful synth work to make for a thrillingly high-paced yet emotive rhythm from another world. 'Sable' is another track made from millions of seemingly small fragments of sound that all coalesce into a darker broken jungle soundscape then 'Jack' pairs lovely snappy snares and rolling amen breaks with celestial melodic sequences that drift up top. 'Cubed3' is more masterfully nimble drum programming and 'Silver City' brings a more melancholic mood to close.

Review: The present face of IDM is here heard occupied by dream duo D'Arcangelo and Karsten Plum, whose latest joint effort for Acid Avengers bowls us over with its acid tweezings, pangs, twingings, twangs, thrums and flits-past. The pH scale skyrockets to the point of insanity on Pflum's side, with 'Hornfish Acid' and 'Aroe Acid' jointly corroding the full length of the Earth's core with their snippy but incisive sizzles and 'ows, until we reach a forbidden underworld uncannily reminiscent of Oz - except the faces of the protagonists are horribly twisted into a yellow, illegal-raved rictuses. D'Arcangelo's 'Gawain' does equally as much with its eerie sprung-verbed chroma-chords and muted but moving melodies; so too does 'Walker Two' raise the tempo to silly speeds, coming as a veritable velociraptor of Druqks-y breaks and drill bits, all let loose from the barrel at a surely illegal rate of fire.

Review: In April 2023, Swiss label Subject To Restrictions Discs offered up a fine debut EP from Zurich electronic wave duo Dadalus & Bikarus. This follow-up EP presents the same tracks in freshly remixed form, with a variety of underground heroes and rising stars providing the revisions. Saeko Killy kicks things off with a minimalistic, subtly funky new wave rework of 'Voran', before Cage & Aviary man Jamie Paton drops versions of two tracks: a moody, slap bass-sporting dark-wave re-wire of 'Youri Gagarine', and a chugging, A Love From Out of Space style tweak of 'Gone'. Over on side B, Andrei Rusu re-imagines 'Tous Les Mesonges' as a dense, discordant slab of rolling acid-electro, while Anastasia Zems turns 'Voran' into a brain-melting acid jacker.

Review: Operative since the early 1990s, Dan Piu is one of Switzerland's most storied deep house and futurist techno producers. His regular EPs are rarely less than excellent, and even those that slip under the radar tend to be solid if not spectacular. The good news is that Piu is in prize form on this Spacebased Recordings released five-tracker. Check first sumptuous, Needs (Not Wants)-influenced deep house number 'Times' - a masterclass in mood and melody - before admiring the bleeping, intergalactic excellence of spacey deep house gem 'Dorsey'. He opts for a more energetic, warehouse-ready early 90s house/techno sound on 'Monitor Body Process 101', doffs a cap to stargazing Motor City techno on 'Flying Dolphins', and showcases a spoken word vocal from Roger Versey on the atmospheric, turn-of-the-90s Nu Groove style brilliance of 'Another Day'.

Review: White Fetish X, the latest release by enigmatic collaboration between Dataintrang and Luke Eargoggle on the Italian label Pareidolia Recordings, is a hypnotic and eerie exploration of the dark side of electronica. The album's six tracks veritably pulsate with a sinister energy, blending elements of EBM, electro clash, and sci-fi to create a truly unique and unsettling soundscape. Review: For the legendary label Tresor to put out a breakbeat record is something very rare. The ardent techno label for over 30 years is clearly telling us without saying, how good this music is. Tresor is always in touch with rave music though and it's not fully surprising that Tresor would support any music that is so reminiscent of the old skool days like Digital Entropy is. Datashader rises from the depths to give us their wicked debut. The EP is an audio onslaught that combines blistering breakbeat gems like 'Velocity 04.22' with eerie sci-fi pieces like 'Sync Out Off'. The AFX like 'Fong' and 'Sub Osc" are early favorites from those who have heard samples of this haunting record. It is rare to see the power of rave, breakbeat and IDM presented this well on one record.

Review: After ten years of silence, 'Regimen Galactico Totalitario' materialises as the new release of the Mexican producer Dellarge, renowned for his experimental noise project I.N.R.I. (Industria Nacional del Ruido Infinito). On this latest mini-album, Dellarge propels his vision of today's evolution of EBM toward a futuristic blend of breakbeat, industrial, and electro, synthesising the an apt soundtrack for a future apocalypse, were it somehow quantized and filtered through a killer sequencer ahead of time. All instrumental, and with every track firing off its acid sixteenths as if each semiquaver were escaping a micro-fusion-powered mech-blaster, every track until 'Hades' is breakneck; that is until the EP commits to a tempo drop, as if to evoke the fact that most of the carnage has been meted out, and that all that's left is for the mechsuits to do now is dance an evil victory dance. Limited to just 300 copies, this is an end of the world you won't want to miss (how could you?).

Review: Massive UK hardcore and breaks from the fittingly named Destroyers; a freshly-established leading light on the international breakbeat scene, 'Death Race' more than cements this artist's status as such. On this dystopic 12", we hear impressive breaks-and-reese gluings, hard-compressed rave-line-tracers, and tempo fluctuations that make us want to redline mixers as much as we want to hunker down and watch the fastest film of all time, Redline (which is ironically about a 'Death Race', so to speak). Two collaborations, with Yo Speed and Bowser, respectively, refuse just as steadfastly to let up on this velocity and pace, transcending expectations insofar as they combine tropes from neurofunk and Matrix-soundtrack-era noirs, all while keeping things collaborative. A stonker of a debut vinyl 12" from a sure-to-do-amazingly-well artist.

Review: 'Proceed With Caution' is the latest four-track EP of classic Detroit techno from the city's Filthiest (one more recent alias of longtime genre purveyor Julian Shamou), coming packed as ever with a cleanly modern twist, and incorporating elements of breakbeat and g-funk swagger along the way. Easing up on the layering, and thus to provide extra room for snappiness and sonic aloofness, 'Up In Smoke' clears the air, displacing oxygen with pyrolitic combustions, sputters and snare-drummed bangs. Equally is the bass-heavier 'Check Out The Technique', evoking not just the awe of technique, but the horrors of technicity, in its doomy imitations of authoritarian war brasses by way of a synthetic analog bass riff.

Review: Die Gestalten's commitment to gnarly underground electro continues apace with this triple-pack monster from the shadowy figure. As ever there's a steely, almost industrial focus to the sound, where machine funk goes heavy on the machine. There is space for some melodic warmth as well, such as the cosy lead lines cresting over the top of 'Der Sucher' and the artfully modulated live version of 'Traenen'. But even in these more approachable moments there's a sense of robotic detachment - this is electro in the purist, icy sense of the word. If you thirst for a large dose of truly underground gear from a lone wolf, this payload will have you body popping for days.

Review: The second release on RPX16035 takes us back into the beating heart of full-fat electro with a cast of emergent talents bitten by the machine funk bug. Digregorius is up first with 'Aurora Maia', a schlocky slice of twisted synth lines that draws parallels with labels like EYA and Partisan. Gianluca Pellerano has a definite video game soundtrack influence lingering over his track like he's battling an end of level boss. Marco Biagioli has a thumping 4/4 focus at work on equally spooked out 'Gate 5' while F Phono finishes the record off with the Italo-tinted 'We All Love Electro Dance' - a track title we can all get behind.

Review: We don't know who is involved in this brand new Diner's Club International project but we do know that they have put together three superb new records, all of which are landing at the same time. We also know they have come from Detroit, specifically Joy Rd on the West Side, and so come drenched in plenty of the swaggering attitudes you would expect. Diners Club International Part 1 fuses electro, ghetto and techno into booty-shaking cuts designed square for the club. The rhythms are infectious, the drums booming and the vocals bawdy, so snap these up before they're gone as quickly as they arrived.

All we have been told about the project is that is a collective of artists from Joy Rd on the West Side of Detroit who are keeping the city's rich ghetto tech traditions alive. The tracks on this, Part 3, are all super short but super compelling - elements of juke, footwork and electro make up the bumping rhythms with smart r&b samples and diffuse synth soul all adding heartfelt charm to the irresistible dancefloor chaos.

Review: Introducing Diner's Club International, a new and anonymous collective, we have been told on the low down, that is here to keep clubs bumping. They hail from Joy Rd on the East of the city of Detroit and are here to keep the ghetto tech scene going strong with a vast array of breathless new rhythms across three different records. Their MO is to get in and out quickly with each track - short, snappy sketches packed with attitude, cut-up vocals and spongy drum and bass patterns. As physical as all these cuts are, they also have a real human heart thanks to the warming pads and well-deployed r&b stabs. These are red hot so do not sleep.

Review: If you like acid, and you like it deep, then keep reading. Dircsen has put together an album of just that for Gated across four sublime sides of wax. Helical Structures operates at the intersection of those sounds and more, with a range of different tempos explored from the unhurried 'Fragments' which spits out random hits and has a nice lo-fi edge to the more high pressure acid of 'Helical Structures' with its undertone of bass lead menace. 'Jack In The Head' is a more classic acid cut with nods to the Chicago pioneers and 'Synthetic Rhythm' (Know Where mix) is perfect for both body and head.

Review: Motech is one of those label that has been an ever present in the underground for years and it likely always will be that way, such is the consistency of the output. Label head DJ 3000 steps up for this latest release which takes the label ever closer to 200 outings over all, and as always he mines a perfect sweetspot between techno, breakbeat and house. 'Meze' has tense drum tech underneath mystic and exotic leads from the Middle East, while 'Humble Quest' keeps things nimble with deft synth smears over thud drum funk. The synth-infused and Detroit style techno of 'Tanbur' makes for a serene listen while 'Snake Eyes' brings a little freaky synth energy to close out.
