  5. Venom (4:07)
Review: Fresh from his #DontFreakOut mixtape, the Darqman returns with another cavalcade of fusions. "Hallucinate" says it all; crisp layers of synths twinkling and flexing over swaggering beats and groaning reese, it's all of rave's many nuances smelted down into a smoking 140 mould. "Flabbergasted" continues the theme with evocative synth lines that rise and rise like a delicately composed horror movie score while "2CI" pays respect to the hippy massive with a deeply trippy-borderline-paranoid spike-jam. Drawing to a close the south Londoner unleashes more poison with the frenetic, hornets-nest riffage of "Mosquito Bite" and the widescreen, jungle-referencing breakbeat anthemity of "Venom". Truly unique.

  3. Bell Blender (4:18)
Review: Making the leap from 50 Weapons (RIP), German darkmonger Phon O makes the logical leap to Tectonic. And he does so with three barren break-based constructs: "Mercurial" is all about the deep space breakbeats and groaning high-end bass slurs, "U8 Phunk" carries classic electro elements in its synths while the au-natural snare rolls suggest more of a militant march, finally "Bell Blender" takes the bleak dynamics established throughout the previous tracks and repurposes them in a modern day jungle amen-shattering framework. The results are beyond satisfying.

  5. Lingle
Review: The third Sullen Tone release in as many months from the anonymous Old Apparatus collective is the second to come from an individual member of the group - this time attributed to A. Levitas. Showing an even starker change in tone than the previous EP, Alfur sees the Old Apparatus sound shed the caked on grit to reveal something significantly lighter in tone; the stumbling beats of "Boxcat" seem to experiment with cloudy hip-hop structures, while "Schwee" combines foggy murmurings with firm square waves and starry arpeggios recalling early grime gone shoegaze. "Cauliroot" provides a sparse arrangement of breezy windchimes and hesitant broken-beat, while "Coalapps" takes melodies drifting just out of focus and combines them with lush 2-step beats. Finally, "Lingle" takes pitchshifted vocals and a ghostly atmosphere that isn't a million miles away from the ghostly steppers R&B of Tri Angle artists Holy Other and oOoOO - but in this case the atmosphere is even more pressurised. Another essential EP from the Old Apparatus camp.

Review: France meets the Balkans on this tasty double-up from two of deep bass music's finest, most forward-looking operators. Von D takes the wheel first: a deliciously stately kick stomps along unhurried as a thick layers weave in and out of the mix with cosmic allure. Egoless switches mid-journey with a much darker design. Again, the pace is slow but the energy and weight is undeniable as the rusty sound bass groans under the pressure of it all. Serious system stuff, right here.

Review: Hot on the heels of Diplo's excellent Riddimentary compilation, the iconic Greensleeves presents this crucial sound clash between dancehall and dubstep. "Badman Place" Busy Signal's anthemic raggacentric collaboration with Mavado is lifted to a whole other level by Digital Mystikz lynchpin Coki - discarding with the string heavy digi dancehall flex entirely! In it's place Coki lays down a menacing future dubscape, with typical sub bass flourishes wiggling out beneath the crunching half step riddim. No disrespect to the original version, but the urgent tones of Busy and Mavado seem perfectly suited to this music! There's a dub version too if you wanna admire Coki's production swagger!

Review: Fresh from his cavalcade of beats on WPF, Dullah makes his Oil Gang debut and it's every bit as shiny and slick as you'd expect as toxic dollops of drama hang of every cinematic dynamic. Instant hench appeal is created with the strings on "Ballys On", sci-fi synths seduce the cosmic mover in the most chiselled of Gs on "Time" while Oil Gang get their own theme tune by way of floaty synth chimes and a classic b-boy bass funk. Throw in the self-fulfilling "Floating" and you've got yourself a winning document. Never a Dullah moment at Oil Gang eh?

  2. Distinct Motive - "Krome" (5:07)
Review: Having announced this in September 2015, San Diego's Banana Stand South have eked out a dangerously long lead time on delivery on this. But, as those who've been pensively waiting will attest, the wait is worth it: Fill Spectre's "Battle For Spice" shakes with both a funky percussion and a devilish detuned bassline. Complete with a peppering of surprises and twists in the tales, this battle is of war-like proportions. Krome's "Distinct Motive" is slightly more conventional with its halftime beat but the crying bass groans that spiral further and further into paranoid chaos create a unique character. Especially when the added sub comes in at the last minute. Freaky.

Review: Twwth & Desto welcome brand new act Inner to the fold by way of this crystalline quartet of 23rd century trap constructions. Swaggering on the cosmic side, there's a touch of the moody Hudsons to the opening track "Pain" before the beats step up into more of grime energy and textures melt into a wavy sensation on "Crystal Ember". Dig deeper for the fractured, clipped and sense-blurring "Closa" before a final 135 hurrah on the RL Grime meets Nick Warren spatial star-gazer. Sweet dreams.

Strict Fact takes Britney's finest and sullies it up with grimy stickiness, Tarquin does that jazz thing that sits somewhere between MJ Cole and Derrick Carter, Marcx gives Ciara the ride of her life while Grizzle closes the show on a pitched up Trey Songz wavey flex. Review: Following last year's celebration of his seminal "Pulse X", White Peach return to the don's small-but-perfectly formed vaults for an equally grand take on the legendary bounce-bass 4x4 cut from 2002. Short, sharp and such a joy to mix and cut, it remains just as crisp now as it did 14 years ago. But that's not to say a few contemporisations wouldn't go amiss... Hi5Ghost retains the depth plunge bass and 808 ricochet hits, Kahn & Neek throw in all the glitches and switches on their take while Astral Black's prize bang clapper brings SMS sexy back with his sub-heavy slight jukey version. Drink it up.

Review: Aside from having a stellar catalogue of releases that span from labels like Reflex to Hyperdub, Kevin Martin's The Bug project has been a foundational pillar of the UK dubstep and bass scene. if there has always been one producer to take things one step further and challenge the dance with each new tune, it's most certainly this producer. No wonder he's been releasing music on Ninja Tune for ages, and that he's back on the label now with this new EP. "Box" features revered grime MC D Double E on the mic, and the collaboration between the two results in utter carnage, a visceral grime banger backed by The Bug's twisted concoctions of beats and bass; check the instrumental, too. "Iceman" is a similar sort of curbside killer, this time with Riko Dan on the vocals, and followed by that gnarly instrumental cut...oof!

Review: Few crews are doing it quite as well as Boxed. Tapping down a real root note in their grime/beats fusions, each EP (and each party they host) knows when to keep it deep and when to really slap it out silly. This beautiful contrast can often be found within one tune. "Mashman Riddim", for example, warms up with swooning wavey synth textures before dropping into a riff that lives up to its name. Elsewhere the ubiquitous Mr Mitch pays respect to Burial, JT The Goon dusts off his flutes for an alien-charming drama session that could score the sequel to Braveheart while Sir Pixalot returns to his Newham Generals-endorsed "All In One" with a VIP that really does slap us about silly.

Hugely influential to the fabric of dance music in the city, they are at the heart of a dynamic community built on inclusion and respect. For more than a decade they have remained firmly rooted in many facets of Western Canada's electronic music subculture. The inaugural Babel Printed & Pressed record contains two retrospective original tracks and accompanying remixes from Lighta! Sound founding members Taal Mala and Michael Red. The accompanying magazine insert contains first hand accounts from the early days of Lighta! and this defining time in Vancouver, from community members Jamie Abugov and Andrew Ryce. The magazine also contains exclusive artwork from Vancouver artist Jonny Ostrem.

Review: Brazilian dubstep in all its hot-blooded glory; Oxossi has delivered an incredible package right here... "Rollers" packs a big bad punch in its swagger before dropping into the starkest, trippiest piano breakdown you've ever heard. "6 Under" flips our focus to the beats as we swathe through a swampy arrangement of far-out noises and off-beat rhythms. "Kadian Dub" is the real screwface of the set with its higher-end riff (think Coki's "Don't Get It Twisted"). Finally we hit the soft organ skanks of "Couch Dub" for those moments when the dance needs just a touch more light. Powerful.

Review: E3 makes his debut on Gourmet with two almighty constructions; "Stalactite" is a wave of trippily textured bass that just laps and laps over you relentlessly, pushing breath out of you with every wash. As the name suggests, "Stalagmite" has a much lower centre of gravity with a much more stern tone and restrained sense of menace. Remix-wise E3 frequent partner in grime Alter Echo switches out the bass drama for a swinging dancehall riddim and a sparse, teasing groaning bass hook while Tetrad gets his 4/4 dub on with "Stalagmite". Another fine feast.

So far in 2014, other than Aphex Twin's Syro, the label has released music from Squarepusher, Oneohtrix Point Never and Jackson & His Computer Band to Plaid, Nightmares On Wax and Rustie - with another album by Clark forthcoming. Now one of Glasgow's most colourful producers (check out the cover art), Hudson Mohawke returns to home base with his first official release since the Satin Panthers EP. As usual there's a kaleidoscope of sounds to be heard on Chimes alongside hip hop beats, footwork skitters and gangster 'woof' vocals, and if "Joy Fantastic" from Butter is a Hud Mo fav, then "King Kong Beaver" should fill you with hope that a follow up LP is on the way.

Already a smash on digital throughout the summer, it's now presented on vinyl: "Connecta" is instant feel-good carnival business, "Copacabana" rides with a UK beat pattern but a Rio sense of jazzy soul while "Villa Mimosa" takes us back to his grittier roots with a harmonic bassline that scratches across thick layers of percussion confidently. Review: Etch & Ilk's grid-hating stable heads west to Philly for some spiritual guidance Gohda-style. Wavey, trippy and breezily cosmic, each original sucks us deep into its textures; the ebb and flow background arpeggio and rolling processed breaks and subdued melancholy on "Cybercity", the far-out 22nd century hip-hop beats of "Corrupted Angels", the weirdo squelch-ghetto creeper "Graverobber" and the crisp-beat Atlanta-bound highlight "In Tha Trap". Remix-wise TMSV takes "Graverobber" deep inside the church crypts for amplified harmonics while Bulu adds more of a left-sided club bang to "Corrupted Angels". Bang for your bucks; bun this at your peril.

The title track "D&T" is a gorgeous slice of shimmering synth-heavy Euro-disco, compressed and propelling, it's the sound of hurtling down the Cote d'Azur in vintage sportscar in 1986. Clark and Dorian Concept are smart choices to remix the track; the former delivers an equally killer slo-mo version, whilst his Austrian counterpart throws in some steel drums and rat-tat-tat-tat percussion in his mix. Non album cut "She Shines" rounds out the 12" with a slab of jazzy trip hop that will appeal greatly to long term Ninja Tune followers.
