Review: Lighta! Sound and its crew of artists are largely credited with bringing dubstep and UK bass music into Vancouver's consciousness. Hugely influential to the fabric of dance music in the city, they are at the heart of a dynamic community built on inclusion and respect. For more than a decade they have remained firmly rooted in many facets of Western Canada's electronic music subculture. The inaugural Babel Printed & Pressed record contains two retrospective original tracks and accompanying remixes from Lighta! Sound founding members Taal Mala and Michael Red. The accompanying magazine insert contains first hand accounts from the early days of Lighta! and this defining time in Vancouver, from community members Jamie Abugov and Andrew Ryce. The magazine also contains exclusive artwork from Vancouver artist Jonny Ostrem.

Review: Kahn & Neek return to local hub Peng Sound for some self titled double plated dubplate action under their steppahs project Gorgon Sound, housed in a rather lovely stamped gatefold sleeve. Although primarily known for their incendiary grime bangers on their own Bandulu imprint, and the dancehall sounds of last year's Backchat single, Kahn & Neek's steppahs-influenced Gorgon Sound project is a chance for them to expand on Bristol's rich legacy of dub, reggae, and soundsystem culture. Since the pair decided to begin the project in 2010, Gorgon Sound has since evolved into a full dubplate DJ operation, with a show made up of entirely their own material. Last year saw the Gorgon Sound project see its first vinyl release, in the form of "Find Jah Way", which featured on the debut released from Bristol's Peng Sound; this double 12" release presents a more expansive take on their steppahs sound, featuring four cuts of West Country bassweight with guest vocalist spots from Brazil's Junior Dread and Bristol's Guy Calhoun.

Review: It's been an immense year for TGM as they unleashed their long-awaited second album Love Death Immortality and toured the world with it. Here we find them taking a step back to 2011 with this between-album EP that's never been pressed to vinyl before now and shows how the trio morphed sonically and creatively from the deeper, more home-listening Drink The Sea to the Prodigy-level dancefloor slammers they have become. "We Can Make The World Stop" is a dirge-like kerb-crawling sleaze-bass stomper that's charged with thick triumphancy. "The Palace Of The Innocents" is more like their earlier material with its industrial strength hip-hop breaks, distorted arpeggiated riff and dreamy flutes. Both kill it.

Review: New Zealand sub-loaders Truth unleash their fourth album Wilderness Of Mirrors to wax on their own DDD imprint. Taking some of the album's many highlights and reframing them into a sizzling six pack of sonic contrast and grimy gully, it's beef from the off as Strikez gets smoky on "Monster" and "D Double E" flexes bear murderation over an industrial strength before the title track takes us deeper into the abyss. Flip for the swaggering grunter "The Moon" (one of Truth's heaviest bassline cuts to date), T Man's militant preaches on "Soldier" and the lush velvet Portisheadian soul of "Inside Your Thoughts". Welcome to the wilderness...

Review: What a year it's been for Warp. So far in 2014, other than Aphex Twin's Syro, the label has released music from Squarepusher, Oneohtrix Point Never and Jackson & His Computer Band to Plaid, Nightmares On Wax and Rustie - with another album by Clark forthcoming. Now one of Glasgow's most colourful producers (check out the cover art), Hudson Mohawke returns to home base with his first official release since the Satin Panthers EP. As usual there's a kaleidoscope of sounds to be heard on Chimes alongside hip hop beats, footwork skitters and gangster 'woof' vocals, and if "Joy Fantastic" from Butter is a Hud Mo fav, then "King Kong Beaver" should fill you with hope that a follow up LP is on the way.

Review: As if releasing their third album wasn't enough, Modeselektor are also busy releasing music on their label, and Elan steps up to deliver some flavoursome electro stylings. "Blackout" is a joyful mixture of dystopian sci-fi grind rubbing up against treated boogie bass in an undeniably funky melting pot. If you ever got down to Dabrye, just you try resisting this release. "Down 4 You" particularly shines with its insistent bump and gently detuning VHS synths. Meanwhile the bossmen (Modeselektor) turn in a surprisingly short and sweet remix that serves as a pleasant bookend rather than a show stealer.

Review: Italic has been representing the electronic scene in Cologne and surrounding areas since before the turn of the century, playing house to stylistically ambiguous outfits such as Kreidler, Stabil Elite and the many different projects of Stefan Schwander. Last year saw Italic usher in the BAR project of Stabil Elite's Lucas Croon and Christina Irrgang, with their self-titled LP turning out a sharply informed blend of new wave, synth pop and the finest in German kosmische traditions. To accompany the album, Italic have called on a cast of artists specifically split between Dusseldorf and Los Angeles to remix BAR. Pharoahs take "Anjali Reverse" and turn it into a gently lilting Balearic vignette, while noted German dubstepper Orson nudges "Dexy's Alrobe" into a spacious half-step chiller. Diva Dompe, daughter of Bauhaus drummer Kevin Haskins no less, creates a bewitching version of "Adios" that sounds beamed straight out of Sunday morning, but for pure flair and unmistakable groove Wolf Muller's take on "BAR Theme" has us especially excited!

  4. Blind Prophet & Bukkha - "Stone Dub" (VIP) (4:39)
Review: For the third volume in their Joint Forces series of collaborative EPs, Moonshine Recordings has pitted various producers against each other. DTR dominates the A-side, first joining forces with Akcept on the ultra-deep dancefloor dubstep of "Liberation Cry" (think echoing horn lines, rich sub-bass and trippy effects) before inviting Bukkha into the studio for the exotic dub cheeriness of "Hard To Explain". Bukkha returns on the B-side alongside Blind Prophet. They begin with the dark sub-bass pressure, ricocheting guitars and echo chamber riddims of "Stone Dub", before successfully beefing up the beats for the rock solid 4/4 thump of "Stone Dub (VIP)".

Review: Back in the spring, Jason 'Aether' Taylor delivered one of the more assured vinyl debuts of the year; a collection of evocative ambient soundscapes and gentle dubstep rhythms entitled Von. This belated follow-up continues in a similar vein, with the Scottish producer prioritized beauty and melodic intent over dancefloor weight. That's not to say that his beats and basslines aren't solid, it's just that what really catches the ear is Taylor's use of intricate piano figures, dreamy female vocal samples, glacial sonic textures, and mood-enhancing chord progressions. It's a blend that results in music more suited to reclined listening than over-enthusiastic dancing. When the music is this picturesque, though, who are we to argue?

Review: The second salvo in Moonshine Recordings' Joint Forces series brings together tracks from Deadroom and Baodub. The former handles the A-side, first unveiling the deep and rumbling bass, steppin' dub riddims and jaunty melody motifs of "Footprint Dub" before reaching for the restless wobble bass and delay-laden drum hits of "Crashed Weed". Baodub takes over on the flipside and can be found merrily skanking away to the mutant reggae stabs, fizzing electronics, twisted sirens and skittish beats of "Call Da Police". To round things off nicely, the same artist slaps down the rolling dunk funk of "Find The Dub", where glistening guitar lines, melodica and delay-laden stabs shuffle around the smoky sound space.

Mixing up dubstep, grime, trap, wave and UKG, the flavours are strong throughout; "Summerjam" flutters with shimmering chimes and manipulated vocal textures, "Shadows" thugs it out over a wavey backdrop, "June 84" is a dream steam roller with swooping, Kareful-style arpeggios while "Starlight" takes the message back to the bedroom with a deep rolling groove and emotion dripping from the sultry synth lines.

Review: Following their razor edge four-tracker earlier this summer Rinse co-founder and foundation grime pioneer Slimzee and new partner in crime As.If.Kid maintain the heat as they declare "Judgement Day" once and for all. Bell-chiming brutality with a rugged slo-mo jungle charm, there's almost a rock-like looseness to the drums and grunting bass as it rolls out with unique energy. Flip for a remix from fellow OG DJ Garna who reinforces As.If.Kid's "Shooter" with an authentic jungle rinse-out.

Review: No sleep for the wicked; Bristol Bandulu man Hi5ghost adds to Hotline's blazing fire with this singular and somewhat brutal escapade. Trappy kicks, halloween humanizations, treacle subs and a wavy bass hook that weaves and bobs in a grimey style, this one hits the chest hard. Remix-wise Hodge's Swedish affiliate Pedder Mannerfelt adds a harder step and technoid energy to proceedings for added bite. Sweet dreams.

Review: Given his recent form, it was probably only a matter of time before fast-rising Glaswegian Inkke made an appearance on LuckyMe. Variously informed by grime, heavy Memphis rap, Rustie and Hudson Mohawke, Inkke's productions slip effortlessly into the LuckyMe catalogue. There's much to admire amongst the six tracks that make up Secret Palace, including a pair of robust club instrumentals - "Chores" and "Simmer" - which have long been staples in the sets of Skepta and D Double E. Our pick, though, has to be heavyweight grime roller "Tales From The Quick", which peppers a weighty sub-bass line and machine-gun percussion with woozy synthesizer lines.

Review: Who is this deep space stranger? Who are Folklore? What's in the water in Toulouse? Because the city is churning out some impeccable bass talents right now... And we suspect some of them are involved in this mysterious project. Each track tells a different tale in a subtly circular fashion; "Kingwise" shimmers into a light, breezy UKG-style two-step, "Untitled" cranks up on channel one with its low and slow dub techno mysticism while "Flat 8" leans back on an icy Alaska-style jungle roll-out. Finally "Version 2" takes us back over familiar chords but does so with a sublime dub beat and sense-blurring clipped synths. The music has all the answers.

Review: This 12" not only marks the debut of Crystal Recordings, but also hyped duo Bloodklart Fiyah Mandem, AKA experienced grime producers JFO and Sativa. The Manchester-based pairing hits the ground running with title track "Gully Side", an impressively intoxicating fusion of deep dubstep rhythms, grime attitude, spooky synthesized strings and speaker-rattling sub-bass posturing. They impressively mix things up on superior flipside "Distant Riddim", where an exotic, snaking melody line wraps itself around a stabbing sub-bass pattern and razor-sharp grime beats. Throw in occasional MC vocal samples, and you have a weighty concoction that's as musically inspiring as it is floor-friendly.

Review: This debut release from the Dream Eater label is little less than a statement of intent. It features cuts from no less than six members of the extended crew crammed onto one action-packed 12". Proc Fiskal kicks things off with the thursting sub-bass, cut-up hip-hop yelps and full-throttle grime beats of "Come Here", before Charlux shows his melodious side on the jaunty goodness of "Riposte". There's some ghostly synths and aggressive grooves from Nights, a deep dive into sparse and heavy dubstep territory from Dr Hugo, and a touch of glacial, post-grime brilliance from Polonis. Best of all, though, is Sir Hiss's "Blood Diamond", which effortlessly underpins marimba style melodies with a punchy, post-dubstep beat.

Review: Schockglatze is a long standing collaboration between artists working across several disciplines. With audio-visual performances, band projects and international exhibitions thus far, they have been causing a stir within the art and music worlds. Spank has already collaborated with a range of acclaimed vocalists, including Warrior Queen, Sensational and Christoph Waltz. As a competent producer, he forms the solid basis for the studio productions of Schockglatze. Nik Nowak has attracted international attention with his mobile sound sculptures and worked with Chicago footwork pioneers like (the late) DJ Rashad and DJ Spinn as well as Kevin Martin aka The Bug. Graphic artist, VJ and video director Moritz Stumm aka Ultramoodem brings to the project an 'inimitable rhythmicity' while creating a singular technique of audio-visual effects: the aesthetic of which has become a signature style of the collective.

Review: Happy days are here again... Bristol's Titus 12 makes his debut on the ever-bountiful Gourmet Beats, and he's doing it with such as positive, spiritual bounce he can even make regicide seem like a joyous topic. Seriously, check that spring and organic punch of "Kill The King" and try telling us murderation ain't sweet. It's not going to happen. "Drifter Dub" takes us down even dustier Kingston lanes as it twists up a mystic lead with a rootsical warm popping bass groove while the title track "Happy Friday" is a soaking wet dreamcake with slaps, bubbles and cascading droplets of rich skank soul dripping throughout. Happy? Ecstatic more like mate.

  6. In Tha Trap (5:38)
Review: Etch & Ilk's grid-hating stable heads west to Philly for some spiritual guidance Gohda-style. Wavey, trippy and breezily cosmic, each original sucks us deep into its textures; the ebb and flow background arpeggio and rolling processed breaks and subdued melancholy on "Cybercity", the far-out 22nd century hip-hop beats of "Corrupted Angels", the weirdo squelch-ghetto creeper "Graverobber" and the crisp-beat Atlanta-bound highlight "In Tha Trap". Remix-wise TMSV takes "Graverobber" deep inside the church crypts for amplified harmonics while Bulu adds more of a left-sided club bang to "Corrupted Angels". Bang for your bucks; bun this at your peril.

  4. BFG900 (3:30)
Review: There's no one iller than Danny Scrilla... Fresh from his debut album and Sam Binga collab on Cosmic Bridge, the German spell-binder makes his debut on Amit's AMAR with four bendy beat fusions. "All Thumbs" is the sound of melting music boxes flickering and burning in 808 flames, "Maelstrom" takes us much deeper into Danny's tubular bass universe and "Quasar" folds up a piece of jazz into tiny pieces before throwing it up into the air and letting it unfold like some type of dreamy parachute. Finally we climax with the swaggering data-drenched swagger jam "BFG900", a freaky world where Roald Dahl's much loved giant and the Terminator make great bedfellows.

Review: Truth's triple-D rollcall develops again with the unique sounds of Sepia. Since emerging on Gourmet, he's pushed all the right deep buttons on White Peach and Infernal. Here we find him on some of his darkest and most captivating touches so far as he builds on the Deep Dark & Dangerous signature; on the weightier side "Sakura" has a richter-rocking grumble of a bassline and "Point Blank" pings and ricochets with a cosmic two-step while on the more introspective side "Eclipse" flutters and twinkles over a sludgy subby bass and "Regret" yearns and mourns with subtle chords and lashings of dubspace and lingering percussion. Quintessential DDD.

  1. Mizz Beats & Von D - "Dot Compulsion" (6:35)
  2. Mr Lager & Von D - "Some Other Place" (4:08)
Review: For their debut 12", freshly minted label Reflektion Tapes has pulled off something of a coup by signing up Von D, a storied producer who has released killer material on such imprints as Apron, Trojan Audio, Sub Freq and Black Acre. On this outing, the Frenchman showcases a pair of collaborative tracks. On the A you'll find "Dub Compulsion", a deliciously soulful, organic sounding hook-up with Deep Medi and Eglo sort Mizz Beats. While the crispy beats and bassline and suitably heavy, it's the wavering vocal samples and sparkling keys that really catch the ear. Former Diagrams man Mr Lager lends a hand on side two's "Some Other Place", a deep space fusion of delay-laden percussion hits, ultra-deep bass and swirling, intergalactic atmospherics.
