  6. At What Point Do I Stop Trying (4:12)
Review: Back in the spring, Jason 'Aether' Taylor delivered one of the more assured vinyl debuts of the year; a collection of evocative ambient soundscapes and gentle dubstep rhythms entitled Von. This belated follow-up continues in a similar vein, with the Scottish producer prioritized beauty and melodic intent over dancefloor weight. That's not to say that his beats and basslines aren't solid, it's just that what really catches the ear is Taylor's use of intricate piano figures, dreamy female vocal samples, glacial sonic textures, and mood-enhancing chord progressions. It's a blend that results in music more suited to reclined listening than over-enthusiastic dancing. When the music is this picturesque, though, who are we to argue?

Review: Indigo and Synkro return for Houndstooth duty under the Akkord guise, with HTH020 their first material for the fabric-affiliated label since last year's roundly praised debut album. That long player was perhaps the most confident display of the sound design-heavy production style the Mancunian pair had been narrowing in on since their cultish white label bow, but this new 12" finds them adding whole new levels of darkness to the mix. Moody low end sits deep in the channels; given the space to breath by Akkord who seem careful to restrict their drum samples to the barest of appearances at times (see "Gravure") whilst those out there that enjoyed the Millie + Andrea album for Modern Love will probably gravitate towards "Continuum" which showcases a murky, raw take on breakbeat-led jungle.

  1. Dust March
  2. Rise 'Em
  3. Metzger
  4. Dog Sweater
Review: Hessle Audio's emergence from hibernation in 2012 really has seen the label release some of the most extraordinary music of its life, and this EP from Bandshell might top the lot. Tapping into the grainy, murky sound world of the like of STL, Shed and Actress, this record explores strange rhythms constantly on the verge of breaking out into a frenzy. The title track is comprised of little more than rattling percussion and dense, fizzy bass, while "Rise 'Em" places a jungle breakbeat atop a mucky hum. On the flip, "Metzger" takes the vibe of classic dubstep and fills it with subtle melodies and clipped snares, but "Dog Sweater" is the real killer - a homage to soundsystem culture whose threadbare rhythms are the only thing to stop you being dragged into the track's viscous centre. Make no mistake, this is a serious new talent.

  3. Dexy's Alrobe (Orson remix) (5:36)
  4. Adios (Diva remix) (7:12)
Review: Italic has been representing the electronic scene in Cologne and surrounding areas since before the turn of the century, playing house to stylistically ambiguous outfits such as Kreidler, Stabil Elite and the many different projects of Stefan Schwander. Last year saw Italic usher in the BAR project of Stabil Elite's Lucas Croon and Christina Irrgang, with their self-titled LP turning out a sharply informed blend of new wave, synth pop and the finest in German kosmische traditions. To accompany the album, Italic have called on a cast of artists specifically split between Dusseldorf and Los Angeles to remix BAR. Pharoahs take "Anjali Reverse" and turn it into a gently lilting Balearic vignette, while noted German dubstepper Orson nudges "Dexy's Alrobe" into a spacious half-step chiller. Diva Dompe, daughter of Bauhaus drummer Kevin Haskins no less, creates a bewitching version of "Adios" that sounds beamed straight out of Sunday morning, but for pure flair and unmistakable groove Wolf Muller's take on "BAR Theme" has us especially excited!

Review: Last seen blowing us kisses on Pearly Whites, the London deepsmith touches down on White Peach with four fittingly juicy bass jams. "Wushu Hands" flickers with eastern instrumental elements over a tightly rolled jitter-prone kick/snare combo, "2 Worlds" strips us right back to our undergarments with only a spacious drum arrangement and groaning bassline to keep us warm, "Silence Soundboy" is a beautifully simple bassline affair where the low end is given lavish expanses of room to roam and mutate. Finally "Pablo" pays tribute with eerie cinematic textures, weeping lead lines and a wicked sense of unease. Sound.

Review: This 12" not only marks the debut of Crystal Recordings, but also hyped duo Bloodklart Fiyah Mandem, AKA experienced grime producers JFO and Sativa. The Manchester-based pairing hits the ground running with title track "Gully Side", an impressively intoxicating fusion of deep dubstep rhythms, grime attitude, spooky synthesized strings and speaker-rattling sub-bass posturing. They impressively mix things up on superior flipside "Distant Riddim", where an exotic, snaking melody line wraps itself around a stabbing sub-bass pattern and razor-sharp grime beats. Throw in occasional MC vocal samples, and you have a weighty concoction that's as musically inspiring as it is floor-friendly.

Review: It's time to step into the Bristol shadows with Sector 7 once again as label co-runner Boofy invites Young Echo to the fray for two instrumental grime / dub hybrids. "Roll The Dice" pelvises with its dense subs and shimmering atmospheric textures while shattering trap snare roll and a mystic melody and skippy drum arrangement flicker in and out of the foreground. "Cane Sword" is a little more on the pure grime tip with some superb drum momentum, breathless atmospheres and cool samples that skid to a halt when you least expect them. Roll again...

  2. Zim Zim Zim (Zim version) (4:35)
Review: After last year saw Kevin Martin's primary project looming large with the Angels & Devils album and a slew of singles, The Bug is back on Ninja Tune with a new single. "Zim Zim Zim" features seasoned dancehall MC Burro Banton raining down vocal fire over a typically grandiose Martin production, all slow, heavy-footed stomp and strangely emotive slabs of grinding metallic synth tones that sound like the end of the world bursting out of the speakers. Banton's nagging delivery sits perfectly on the track, but for those that want to home in on the subtleties of the production the "Version" provides all the space you need for those staggering sounds to roam.

  4. Kill Them (feat Daddy Freddy)
Review: Dropping a searing double pack of 10" badness ahead of the forthcoming Angels & Devils album, The Bug is back in business with some apocalyptic gutter bass of the highest order. "Freakshow" matches the leering delivery of Danny Brown with the sinister croon of King Midas Sound's Kiki Hitomi over a horn-laden trap swagger to devastating effect. "Louder" pits Flowdan in the depths of a nauseating half-step march, while "Dirty" takes the London MC into a barrage of equally nerve-jangling drum rattles and alarm-clanging stabs. Long-time Bug collaborator Daddy Freddy rolls up his sleeves for "Kill Them", anchoring the dread stomp with a fearsome growl as anthemic as it is nihilistic.

Review: Aside from having a stellar catalogue of releases that span from labels like Reflex to Hyperdub, Kevin Martin's The Bug project has been a foundational pillar of the UK dubstep and bass scene. if there has always been one producer to take things one step further and challenge the dance with each new tune, it's most certainly this producer. No wonder he's been releasing music on Ninja Tune for ages, and that he's back on the label now with this new EP. "Box" features revered grime MC D Double E on the mic, and the collaboration between the two results in utter carnage, a visceral grime banger backed by The Bug's twisted concoctions of beats and bass; check the instrumental, too. "Iceman" is a similar sort of curbside killer, this time with Riko Dan on the vocals, and followed by that gnarly instrumental cut...oof!

Street Halo

  1. Street Halo
  2. NYC
  3. Stolen Dog
Review: Repress alert! Wednesday: Hyperdub announce a new three track release from enigmatic producer Burial - his first solo work in four years. Thursday: Said records arrive on Juno doorstep. How's that for service (and secrecy)! The news came just a matter of days after the producer's collaboration with Radiohead front man Thom Yorke and Four Tet arrived on record shelves across the UK and promptly sold out amidst a frenzy of hype. There are three new tracks on offer here, namely "Street Halo", "NYC" and "Stolen Dog". First up "Street Halo" showcases the classic Burial sound; subterranean bass gurgles, trademark clicking beats and barely-there vocal snatches. A sweet childlike vocal pervades the sonic mist on "NYC" while "Stolen Dog" closes out with ethereal vocal harmonies buried deep beneath vinyl crackle. Stunning.

  1. Rival Dealer
  2. Hiders
  3. Come Down To Us
Review: After a decidedly silent 2013 Burial is back on Hyperdub with a new single that points to pastures new for the stealthy producer. "Rival Dealer" is sure to polarize opinion as it takes a positively unexpected route into hardcore breaks, static interference, all manner of oddball speech samples, diversions and switches in dynamics, and a willfully grainy production finish that borders on punk. Depending on where you choose to dive into the ten-minute track the experience could be very different; experiencing it in full is nothing short of a rollercoaster. "Hiders" too is full of surprises, more indebted to pop balladry than anything remotely garage related, and the emotive croon and swooning piano is only magnified by a Yazoo-esque drum stomp at the midway point. "Come Down To Us" is equally heartfelt, all slow release vocals and languid chords yet constantly fractured at the edges, with yet more surprising turns of bombast waiting in the wings over thirteen minutes.

  1. Truant
  2. Rough Sleeper
Review: *Burial Repress* The double header of Truant/Rough Sleeper is the second EP from Burial in 2012, and arrives with as little fanfare as the superb Kindred EP did early this year. Unlike that more dancefloor focused record however, this EP harks back to the producer's earlier sound. Of course, being two longform compositions clocking in at 12 and 14 minutes respectively, they're hardly conventional works; each utilises the same liberal use of spectral atmospheres, emotive vocal samples, hollow 2-step beats and nods to jungle as we've come to expect from the producer, but with complex structures that come across more like two sides of an old mixtape recorded from a pair of decrepit turntables. Of course being a mixtape from Burial, this is special stuff indeed - consider it an early Christmas present to yourself.

  1. Kindred
  2. Loner
  3. Ashtray Wasp
Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** Given that his sound has now been referenced, copied and bastardised by countless imitators, is testament to Burial's enduring appeal that the announcement of a new EP on a Sunday in Febuary was enough to shake the online music press out of their collective stupors. As an EP it more than stands up to his previous work, and it may even be better than last year's Street Halo EP - where the brilliance of the title track left the EP quite top-heavy, there's no such complaints on Kindred. If UK garage was the touchpoint for his earlier releases, this EP sees Burial further developing a sound that has few obvious points of comparison, whether it's the savage, gnarled bassline of the title track, or the shambling house of "Loner", characterized by its hollowed out arpeggio and ambient crackle. But it's "Ashtray Wasp" that provides the most breathtaking moment, seeing the producer using the distinct musical language he's created and bringing confident melodic elements into play. Of course such descriptions seem trivial when trying to describe this EP - even for Burial it's far beyond what his peers and imitators could ever imagine making.

  1. Badman Place (Coki Digital Mystikz remix)
  2. Badman Place (Coki Digital Mystikz dub mix)
Review: Hot on the heels of Diplo's excellent Riddimentary compilation, the iconic Greensleeves presents this crucial sound clash between dancehall and dubstep. "Badman Place" Busy Signal's anthemic raggacentric collaboration with Mavado is lifted to a whole other level by Digital Mystikz lynchpin Coki - discarding with the string heavy digi dancehall flex entirely! In it's place Coki lays down a menacing future dubscape, with typical sub bass flourishes wiggling out beneath the crunching half step riddim. No disrespect to the original version, but the urgent tones of Busy and Mavado seem perfectly suited to this music! There's a dub version too if you wanna admire Coki's production swagger!

Review: Consistent operator from the German shadows, Causa's drinking the strong juice again. Or "Juce", as the case is right here... A loose-legged graveyard strut where strange tones echo and pop out when you least expect them. "Struggle" writhes and jitters with an alien funk and some of the coolest, strangest drum fills we've heard on bass record recently. Finally "Minerals" closes the B with a wonked trip of off-grid kicks, woozy melodica and barbed electric fence textures running point beneath. Crucial by name, crucial by nature.

Review: Infernal Sounds started as a widely followed YouTube channel specializing in promoting other people's music and mixes, but over the last two years they've started churning out solid, deep-minded dubstep of their own. And dubstep it is, because we don't like labelling any UK dance tune that deviates from house simply as 'bass'. Newcomers Causa and Shu drop a heavy, murky bombshell in "Dubhelmet", followed by the comparatively sunnier bass pounds and two-steps of "Dawn Chorus", and the DMZ vibes of "System One", a traditional sort of banger that you don't often here anymore. Tip!

Lead track "Hypnagogia" takes it's cue from the loose percussive style of Shackleton, gradually weaving in a thumping half step groove and intoxicating layers of Eastern strings - accomplished stuff! On the flip Victoria Klewin adds her floating, slightly saturated vocal tones to the galloping mysticism of "Find Me."

First up it's "Landscapes", co-produced with Simbad, and utterly devastating in its use of simple elements for maximum effect. A broken beat ticks steadily away under glossy, undulating streams of pads while Cooly herself enchants with her Neneh Cherry style vocal delivery. "It's Serious" on the flipside sees Cooly linking up with certified house legend Karizma for a more chunky, beat-driven offering that will slay floors in the same way that Altered Natives' "Rass Out" did some years back.

Big horns and authentic dynamics and arrangements; you really don't get much more rootsy than this... "Trident" is all about the plucked guitar line and star-gazing trumpet, "Common Rules" is more about the whole bass groove that leans heavily into the future supported by a select amount of hazy instruments. Essential for any daytime outdoor sets you have this summer.

Realisation
Cat: BTR 001. Rel: 28 Nov 16
  1. Realisation (5:31)
  2. Enchanted (5:29)
  3. Lift Off (5:27)
Review: Nothing to cry about here: Dark Tantrums returns with something extra special. Having previously filled our crates by way of Get Darker, Deep Medi and Nebula, he now unveils his own imprint: Beyond Time. The name fits as each one of these carefully selected dubs trounces temporal or crass trend-based limitations: "Realisation" is king-sized machine funk, all molten steel and pneumatic drums, "Enchanted" plays the cosmic card with its foggy pads and ricochet snares while "Lift Off" takes you right back to the foundation with its unabashed jump-up energy. There's no messing around with this launch release. An on-point balance of pure, ageless dub for all heads and corners, launch releases don't get any better.

Cat: BD 272. Rel: 04 Apr 16
  1. Hallucinate (4:23)
  2. Flabbergasted (5:03)
  3. 2C-1 (4:09)
  4. Mosquito Bite (9:25)
  5. Venom (4:07)
Review: Fresh from his #DontFreakOut mixtape, the Darqman returns with another cavalcade of fusions. "Hallucinate" says it all; crisp layers of synths twinkling and flexing over swaggering beats and groaning reese, it's all of rave's many nuances smelted down into a smoking 140 mould. "Flabbergasted" continues the theme with evocative synth lines that rise and rise like a delicately composed horror movie score while "2CI" pays respect to the hippy massive with a deeply trippy-borderline-paranoid spike-jam. Drawing to a close the south Londoner unleashes more poison with the frenetic, hornets-nest riffage of "Mosquito Bite" and the widescreen, jungle-referencing breakbeat anthemity of "Venom". Truly unique.

Joint Forces Pt 2
Cat: MS 031. Rel: 22 May 17
  1. Deadroom - "Footprint Dub" (5:16)
  2. Deadroom - "Crashed Weed" (4:51)
  3. Baodub - "Call Da Police" (4:55)
  4. Baodub - "Find The Dub" (5:28)
Review: The second salvo in Moonshine Recordings' Joint Forces series brings together tracks from Deadroom and Baodub. The former handles the A-side, first unveiling the deep and rumbling bass, steppin' dub riddims and jaunty melody motifs of "Footprint Dub" before reaching for the restless wobble bass and delay-laden drum hits of "Crashed Weed". Baodub takes over on the flipside and can be found merrily skanking away to the mutant reggae stabs, fizzing electronics, twisted sirens and skittish beats of "Call Da Police". To round things off nicely, the same artist slaps down the rolling dunk funk of "Find The Dub", where glistening guitar lines, melodica and delay-laden stabs shuffle around the smoky sound space.
