Black Carbon (4:27)
Black Carbon (dub) (4:27)
Review: Black Carbon by Akae Beka featuring Chronixx delivers deep Jah vibes and chilled reggae rhythms that capture the soul of Jamaican life. On Side-1, the track unfolds smoothly, blending reggae and dub elements into a mesmerising sonic experience. The lyrics delve into profound themes, reflecting on societal issues and spiritual insights. On Side-2, the dub version amplifies the instrumental aspects, allowing listeners to immerse themselves in the rich layers of the music. Overall, Black Carbon is a captivating release that shows the talents of both artists and offers a refreshing take on contemporary reggae music.

Hopes & Dreams (3:50)
Hopes & Dreams (dub version) (4:07)
Review: Talented multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, rhythm maker and producer Martin Campbell has some revered studio skills that have made him well known and love in reggae circles. He manages to capture the magical essence of what made the original 70s sounds so special in labels like the iconic Channel One, Log On and Retro Beat. His earlier work was distributed by Reggae Retro Records but now he comes through with a new tune on Log On that hits the nail on the head and has you deep in his warm drums in no time. A dub on the flip of this crucial 45 rpm takes things even deeper.

Chazbo Meets Jah93 - "Holy Mountain" (3:43)
Chazbo - "Holy Mountain" (dub) (3:42)
Review: Chazbo and Jah93 are two artists living in Japan who share a passion for dub; producer Chazbo has worked with the likes of Prince Alla, Earl 16 and Kenny Knots, while melodica maestro Jah93 enjoys wide renown for her band Dubdhizm. 'Holy Mountain' hears Chazbo remix one of Jah's original tracks originally composed way back in the day. It's a fresh new take: digi and bleep elements overlay a harmonious yet patient dub backing, with evident extra care to carve out an organic sound. Of course, it wouldn't be the same without Jah93's melodious melodica over Chazbo's efforts, which glides mutedly over both A and dub.

Sala (5:29)
Petwo Raboday (4:53)
Review: There is real fire and fury in this opening tune on the new drop from Bongo Joe Records out of Switzerland. A ceremonial chant opens up and is sure to bring dance floor delirium from the off over the high-speed dub rhythms and raw percussive sounds. The raw, high octane and primordial influence of techno looms large throughout with Chouk Bwa & The Angstromers really going for the jugular. Heft modern bass weight, deft electronics and traditional Afro-Caribbean polyrhythms all collide with trance-including and mind-melting results.

Government Man (Alt cut) (3:05)
Political Version (3:26)
Review: There will always be a place for politically charged records, but lines like "The government man bring the working man down to his knees/It's time to take a stand against the government man" seem particularly relevant right now. It's the lead cry on the a-side of this new 7" from eight-piece band Christel & The Goldmaster AllStars who have a bold two piece horn section driving along this fusion of ska, reggae and rock which was first recorded in 1998 and has recently been unearthed. The flipside version has sci-fi studio effects and warped synths layered in for extra trippiness.

Chezidek - "Blind Love" (3:39)
Jah Mason - "The Motive" (3:26)
Von D - "Saga Riddim" (Horns mix) (3:33)
Review: The latest entry in this series from the Dub Suty crew managed to nod to the roots of digital dub and dancehall while also very much looking to the future. It sees the label team up with a producer who lays down the beast while different vocalists step up to add their own twist to the sonics. Von D is the man on the buttons and he crafts a seriously weighty stepper that comes with horns, keys, guitars and of course some alluring bars. Reggae singers Chukki Starr, Chezidek, and Jah Mason all come correct with this positive, uplifting messages of unity.

Soul Of A Lion

Soul Of A Lion (4:17)
Soul Of A Lion (dub mix) (4:21)
Review: The Circle of Confusion are a Swiss dub production duo, who, adding to their fast-growing repertoire of releases, now drop 'Soul Of A Lion', which features Wayne Paul, an English reggae singer who was mostly active in the 90s and 2000s. Though Paul disappeared from the scene towards the end of that period, he now returns with a defiant message of big-feline hope and reminiscence, sung against a modern reggae backing with a polished, 80s roots feel. "How you feeling right now... now that you're older and wiser?" he asks in the song. Alll the better now you're back, thanks for asking.

Suicide Of Judas (4:11)
Akeldama (4:11)
Review: Al Cisneros has been journeying through the dub undergrowth for over a decade now. He continues on that path with ever more inventive sounds and fresh studio tricks on this new pair tunes for US label Sinai. This tidy blue 7" has sinew bass and brings a raw, relentless rhythm that sinks you in deep. The fine flip side version finds the studio mixing desk becoming an instrument in its own right as it twists, contorts, smears and smudges the original into a heady late night soundtrack.

Johnny Clarke - "Babylon" (dub) (4:06)
Earth & Stone - "False Ruler" (3:47)
Review: Johnny Clarke and Earth & Stone cooked up some real magic with 'Babylon'. It's a sumptuous sound that offers a symbolic representation of societal oppression and injustice. With Johnny Clarke's haunting vocals and Earth & Stone's mesmerising rhythms, the tune becomes a poignant commentary on the struggles of the marginalised and the quest for freedom. Through those lyrics and hypnotic melodies, it confronts issues of systemic inequality and political corruption, urging people to rise against oppression. As such it is anther great tune that proves the enduring relevance of reggae as a voice for the oppressed.

Leggo Violence (3:34)
Leggo Violence (version) (3:03)
Review: 1994's original pressing of Steely & Clevie's outstanding leftfield production with Johnny Clarke's vocals is well worth inspecting, but you might struggle to find one these days, and it'll be pricey if you do, because it's become something of a classic 45. Thankfully it gets reissued here with A-side original 'Leggo Violence' rolling lazy drums while the Clarke vocals soar high and sweet despite what they sing about. On the flip is a smooth rolling version that allows that super bassline to do its thing free from any distraction, and all with extra dub goodness.

Dr 55 (4:34)
Lower Feels (6:55)
Review: The Mysticisms label welcomes Coral D aka Duncan Stump for a debut outing here that marks the first new music to be part of the ongoing and most excellent Dubplate series. This artist has a long history of crafting "deep dub electronic swing" in his roles in Mock & Toof, FX Mchm and his 6000 Degrees project. This one finds him bringing some dub reggae influences as 'Dissolves' is built on a chugging rhythm with smeared chords. 'DR 55' is then a masterfully laidback digi-dub groove that warps space and time and so leaves you utterly hypnotised.

Stvarno Nestvarno (6:12)
Stvarno Nestvarno (Tobias Gullberg remix) (4:58)
Review: Svedjebruk rolls out a 15th bit of well crafted and dubbed-out techno here. It's Eno Cosovic who is at the buttons and really impresses with what we guess might be a debut release. It is a warming dub with a dynamic bottom and plenty of emotional colours running through the grooves. 'Druga' has vocals drifting in and out next to broad synth smears, 'Upoznaj Me' has a more fizzing Detroit techno feel and 'Stvarno Nestvarno' is cavernous and heady tackle with taught synth pulses and a grainy groove. A Tobias Gullberg remix brings some Bluetrain-style dub swagger to what is a very tasteful EP.

Review: Jordan Chini, also sometimes spotted out and about as Boy Dude, is an LA producer and multi-instrumentalist with a penchant for leftfield twists on the dub wise tradition. He makes his first appearance on CQQL Records as Count Dubula, laying down a sure shot 7" which will be warmly received by any lovers of the OG 70s dub sound. Maintaining the space between the notes and running everything through a truly authentic signal chain, this is a lovingly crafted record which could easily pass for a joint from the glory days of dub innovation. Review: Four weighty units of dubwise reggae come courtesy of Countryman, West Finga and Jeh. The star-sider, 'This Generation' by Countryman, is a banging enough contribution to this latest EP for Hornin' to receive several versions. A foreboding ballad for a generation beset by economic problems - "this generation got nothing to lose... there's gonna be problems!" - the veteran singer and soundsystem operator is adept as ever in delivering a high-consciousness message. The B-side, meanwhile, features two dub versions of the same riddim by West Finga and JEH, two producers also part of the selfsame French Hornin' Sounds crew.

Ohm Alone (6:00)
Review: Fresh from bringing his brand of intergalactic electronic fusion to Nummer Music, Moonshoe Records regular Cousin (real name Jackson Fester) makes his bow on Naff. The Australian is in prime form throughout, offering up hard-to-pigeonhole blends of IDM, ambient techno and dub that were reportedly inspired by the expanses of bushland close to his home. He first explores the dubby end of IDM on creepy-but-beautiful opener 'Second Message', before joining the dots between energy-packed breakbeat, dub-fuelled techno and extra-percussive electronica on confirmed club cut 'Disting'. 'The River' sees the much-admired Aussie blur the boundaries between UK funky, dub and ambient techno, while 'Padda' is a picturesque and bubbly, eyes-closed excursion. Closing cut 'Ohm Alone', meanwhile, is a gently tropical shuffle through immersive ambient dub techno with nods towards the more experimental end of UK bass.

Review: CosTafari is Everald Collins and he has been churning out crucial dub and reggae since the turn of the millennium. He's voiced four albums to date and plenty of EPs on labels like Roots Injection, Ark Music and I Negus Records, as well as working under tens of different aliases. 'Freedom' is a happy dub with jangling drums and perc and his cries for freedom up top. It's well-versed in the classic sound but has a fresh contemporary production twist. It comes as a dub, of course, with the rousing 'Get Up An' Fight' on the flip. This one is more laidback and spare but packs no less of a punch, not least with the charged vocals up top.

The Mighty Two - "Two Sevens Clash" (version) (3:40)
Review: The classic 'Two Sevens Clash', which Joe Gibbs produced so well, is a timeless reggae outing that gets a welcome reissue here. Anyone of a certain age might remember this as a soundtrack to the years when punk was appropriating reggae sounds. The tune is from an album that was listened to between punk gigs and when not getting beaten up by Teds. The band of course didn't know this would become its fate and in isolation it remains a special listen with some smart mixing desk effects, hissing hi hats and nice dusty and deep low ends.

It is Earl Cunningham who kicks things off on 'Frienemy,' a tune that proves his voice is in top shape. Review: Federal and Dubstore Japan reissue highly sought after gem, Willie Lindo's cover of Love Unlimited Orchestra's 'Midnight And You'. 'Midnight' is a louche, smooth-as-sin nocturne punctuated by hammond wobbles, whispered nothings and surely one of the most in-the-pocket basslines in reggae history and the legendary Lloyd Charmers gives it a sparse, small hours dubbing on the B-side, removing all fat and showcasing the unparalleled rhythm section. Review: Tony Ruffcutt is a legend in the reggae scene and has been since the 70s. The label named after him has now got the right to recut a classic from that era, 'Love And Only Love' by Fred Locks. The original is a full-flavoured rhythm with nice wooden hits and brassy horns accompanying the fat-bottomed low end while the vocal is smooth up top. A dub mix and then a super dub adds even more weight to the low end and on the flipside is another roots icon in the form of Prince Alla who adds fresh lyrics to 'Man On Board'. The various overdubs and vocals were recorded in Jamaica with mixdowns taken care of by the legendary Caveman.

Review: You can always count on Capracara to bring something a little spicy to the table, but the results are even more unpredictable when you throw UK house magician Simbad into the mix. If you like your house music extremely grubby, blippy, analogue and slightly unhinged, but still soulful, you're in the right place. 'Roubaix Cube' jerks and bumps along with all kinds of bleeps and rugged beats, and the pads sound delirious but still inject some real heart into the track. 'Prowler Report' heads further off into discordant freakiness, but there's still plenty of punch down low. 'The Ozone' is the smoother offering, with some gorgeous keys, chords and pads interweaving for a still-rugged but oh-so-sweet strain of deep house music.

Ahead of that comes a 47th, and this time it is a reissue of a Wayne Wade jam from 1991 that has been reissued a number of times in various formats. Review: Given that heavily psychedelic, dub-tinged, mid-90s style breakbeat excursions are back in fashion, it's the perfect time for Ron Henry and Daniel Goganian to reboot their Children of the Bong project. Earlier in this year, the former Planet Dog duo dug into their archives and issued a seven-track set of previously unreleased recordings. Here they repeat the trick, serving up a swathe of cuts recorded before and after the release of their cult debut album, Sirius Sounds, in 1995. Musically, it's a deliciously trippy and dub-wise blast, with Fila Brazillia style stoner funk ('Babylon 3') and bouncy, dub-flecked electronica ('Dubber FX'), sitting side by side with intergalactic ambient dub ('UVF (Ultraviolet Frequencies)', world music-tinged epics ('Babylon 4'), beat-free psy-trance textures ('In Flight Trance'), and immersive, acid-fired soundscapes ('Eleven Dimension Super Gravity').

Review: Although barely known outside of experimental electronic music circles, Simon Crab has been making avant-garde and cutting-edge music since the turn of the '80s. His latest album, and first for Leeds-based Space Ritual, delivers sci-fi daydreaming by the bucket-load, with the Hastings-based producer gently leading us on a journey through symphonic electronic ambient ('Headless Day'), shuffling ambient techno ('Invisible Cities'), gorgeous beat-free soundscapes ('Edgelands', 'Phantom Power'), low-slung IDM-dub fusion ('Battle of the Trees'), illbient influenced ambient dub ('Invaders') and bubbly-sounding, modular-powered electronica (the pin-sharp and wonderfully melodious 'By Product'). It all adds up to an immersive, evocative and emotive collection of vivid electronic workouts that more than stands up to repeat listens.

Review: Yet one more classic eight-tracker to now be reissued via Creation Rebel's home label On-U Sound, Rebel Vibrations was their third album for Hitrun and followed up 1978's Close Encounters Of The Third World and Dub From Creation. Similarly lackadaisical and spaced-out to its predecessors, Rebel Vibrations nonetheless charted a slight upping of the weighty ante - with bass parts becoming more prominent and starker - and a refining of the delays and FX as they sit in the mix.

Review: As part of a rather comprehensive looking back and reissuing of some of Creation Rebel's best and most enduring albums, On-U Sound pay due homage to their one and only in-house band. Close Encounters Of The Third World is one such album; it was first released in 1978, and draws a titular link between alienation and privation. The eight-track LP collates the instrumental talents of Lizard The Wizard, Dr. Pablo and Crucial Tony, and hears a fantastic mixing job by none other than Prince Jammy. With an initial charge to 'Know Yourself' before externalising the pilous inner monologue with 'Natty Conscience Free', Creation Rebel here demonstrate a stage of collective soul-searching and a subsequently serene set of songs.

Review: A comprehensive reissue campaign of the key albums by Creation Rebel, the original On-U Sound house band. The series encompasses out of print and much in demand UK dub reggae albums from the late 1970s and early 1980s, all highlighting crucial early production work from the mixing desk of Adrian Sherwood. The band's post-reformation, 2023 album Hostile Environment, is thrown in for good measure. This mammoth 6xCD edition houses five dozen tracks of indelibly experimental dub and reggae tracks, many of which tend towards the spacier and more cosmically-intoned ends of the dub tradition, which was above alive and kicking at the height of the genre's fame from the late 1970s onwards, and spearheaded by none other than group members Clifton Morrison, Eric 'Fish' Clarke and more.

Review: Creation Rebel were the original On-U Sound house band, laying down some of the definitive riddims in the early days of Adrian Sherwood's voyage into dub. 40 years on from their last record, the trio of Crucial Tony, Eskimo Fox and Magoo have reunited with Sherwood at the controls for another masterclass in heavyweight sounds from a crack team of players. Originally they formed as a backing band for the late Prince Far-I, and some of his unmistakable tones manifest on this new record from archive tapes, while Daddy Freddy brings his famous fast chat flow to proceedings and Italian synth player Gaudi crops up on occasion too. Rather than dub-by-numbers, this is an exploratory record which takes in different grooves and influences, all filtered through the expanse of space-time manipulation the dub wise approach inspires.

Review: For the first time since 1982, Creation Rebel's Psychotic Jonkanoo is made available on vinyl. Curiously first released on the primarily post-punk oriented Glaswegian label Statik, their sixth album here keeps to the usual eight-track formula, yet hears a softer discographic progression; compared to their earlier works, it is less prodding and weighty, and instead opts for a headroomier and more reverb-laden atmosphere, through which the album's distinctive and novel call-and-response chants can peek. Bandleader Crucial Tony was aided on the vocal front by harmonies from other group members, in a style reminiscent of Black Uhuru, plus the occasional guest such as John Lydon of the Sex Pistols and Public Image Limited providing backing harmony (!) on 'Mother Don't Cry'.
