  1. GOJI (6:10)
  2. GOJI (Demdike Stare Hypersensitive World remix) (6:37)
Review: After a strong and distinctive run of outsider electronics from artists like Meze, Plants Army Revolver and Nicolo, HomeMadeZucchero founder Giesse steps up to the plate with a deadly concoction that uses breakneck drum programming to whip up a feeling somewhere between technical jungle and hyper-modern dubstep. Where "GOJI" is all sharp angles and bold sound design, the mighty Demdike Stare are on hand to deliver a remix that shirks convention (would you expect any less?) by barreling into a noise-caked tunnel of intensity that opens out into a fractured breakbeat meditation broken up with flamboyant handbrake turns to keep the dancers on their toes.

  4. La Esperanza (6:43)
Review: Brazilian producer Coastdream has been seen previously on the likes of Deeptrax, Paling Trax and Renascence and now shows up on London purveyors of dreamy lo-fi house X-Kalay. The title track will take you back to that Second Summer Of Love with its retro euphoric vibes, as will the deep tribal house of "Oh La La". It's over to The Windy City circa '89 on the dusty and saturated emotions of "About You" while "La Esperanza" throws a right curveball at us launching a dark junglist stepper circa '94 right at ya. An EP that joins the dots between several seminal moments across dance music history in fine fashion. Tip!

Review: The one and only Digital celebrates his label's 50th release with this incredible V/A collection featuring some of the most important names and artists in the movement. Calibre, Klute, Kiljoy, Need For Mirrors, Drumsound & Bassline Smith and many more all feature on the album, ensure the Function signature broadsword, open-armed sound remains as developed and varied as it's known for being. Highlights include Calibre & Jet Li's drum-heavy drama stepper "Least Loved", the unabashed bashment of Digital's own "Dub Conscious", Seba & Jr Vallo's epic growler "Wasabi", DJ Trace's wild breakbeat ruckus "Spirits" and Klute's insane "Sick Of It All". These are just examples of a completely killer collection with no filler whatsoever. All contrasts, shades, styles and energies, Digital does not mess around!

Review: Yes Mr Freeze this one's real cold! Shogun delve deep into their 15 year deep vault and pick four outstanding moments from their extensive catalogue for the special collectors vinyl series. Kicking off with the certified anthem "Dreadnaught", it's a wall-to-wall vibe fest with tracks that aren't just the best in Shogun's catalogue but some of the best drum & bass tunes releases this century full stop. If you have so much as a smidgeon of D&B interest then you'll already know how good these are. Calibre's timeless singalong remix of SpectraSoul's "Away With Me", Friction & K-Tee's ruckus-triggering "Set It Off" and the cult collaboration between Perez and Ivy Lab's Sabre "Solitary Native". If you focus you can see the speaker vibrate.

  4. Pastell (5:17)
Review: From Cologne with badness, man-of-the-moment Submarine comes correct on label-of-the-moment 1985 with his best release to date. Four tracks deep, each one reflecting just how exciting drum & bass is right now. "Fate" takes the lead with its crunchy groove and gruff 40-a-day bass grunts, "No Sleep" is a barbed drifter with an air so solemn it'll have you wearing black for the rest of your living days and "Return Of Enel" gets all snake-like in the bass department while the drum sounds flicker and morph on every 32. Finally "Pastell" closes with its purring subs and glacial pads. Coming on strong like a homage to the sound and attitude of Perez's label, it leaves you hungry for more.

Review: Brussels mandem Bredren get all arsonist with this scorching EP debut for Alix Perez's 1985. Four tracks, each one a flamer, we kick off with the forthright headbutt of "Inferno" where T Man holds court with savage bars. Deeper into the EP we hit their classic stripped back rolling sound on "Get Physical" before "Flick Knife" cuts straight to the chase with some sinewy, creepy low end flourishes. Last but not least "Undress" gets everyone naked with some beautiful light-at-end-of-tunnel barbed soul. Four out of four, Bredren are firing right now.

Review: Following releases and appearances on Astrophonica, Rua Sound and None60 the incredibly talented Lewis James makes his Exit debut with this remarkable five track EP. If you've followed his previous, you'll know how untypical, exciting and disarmingly deep and emotive this music is before you even press play. Highlights include the heart-hugging soul of "Worth The Pain" with Danish singer Alia Fresco (who you will recognise from dBridge and Kid Drama releases in the past) the stalking beat punctuation and tension of "Acidize" (with the bossman dBridge on collaborative assist) and the genuinely epic, bittersweet finale "No Team", a collaboration with none other than Lorn! Everything about this EP has been executed with thought, detail and soul. No one does things like Lewis or indeed Exit. Beautiful.

Review: Lost On Purpose takes four tracks from Random Movement's 15 track full length and offers a great cross section of his style. The title track is a philosophical journey on crisp boom bap and rolling liquid drums, while "Somewhere Back There" is defined by its exquisite piano chords, which add plenty of tenderness to the drum work. "Breaking The Mold" gets down and dirty with a spraying baseline that will screw up any face, then the good times roll thanks to the feel good vibes of closer "Living In A Dream".

Review: The mysterious Bakground returns to Lobster Theremin and he's rolling with esteemed company as Sangam adds his deep threads to the weave. "90s Living" lives up to its name; big immersive atmospheric jungle, all loose around the edges but held together so firmly. "Intermission" provides no respite - the only break is the one that rolls beneath the shimmering keys. Meanwhile the flip "Keeper Of The Lost" takes us down to 150 on a robust set of rolling breaks before "Carousel" brings us back down to earth softly, deeply and ambiently.

Review: Scar aka Script and Survival have straddled the divide of underground and more accessible drum & bass for years. After various outings on Metalheadz, they're now signed up exclusively and offer a brand new album that mixes up historic ideals, new school visions and hard hitting grooves in equal measure. There are future rollers like "State Of Delusion" next to sublime and soul infused gems like "Funk Control" and "Stolen Memories". "The Seeker" goes deep on a wave of razor sharp synth work and "High Fives & Devil Eyes" is the darkened late night stepper that will awaken any floor. An accomplished album that works away from the club as much on a hefty sound system.

Review: 2019 sees Metalheadz turn 25 years old, but Goldie's iconic label continues to turn out razor sharp EPs from talents old and new. HLZ is the latest to take things forward with this expertly executed four tracker. Featuring an array of raw, uncompromising tunes it spans a wide range of moods: "Eternal" is a brain frying stepper, "Ultradogs" is more a deeper, headier, atmospheric and cerebral track while "Hidden Memory" mixes up devastating bass with icy hi hats and snaking synths. "Hyperion" closes out with soulful vocals drifting above clattering drum work and will take you into the next dimension.

Review: A couple of years back, London Elektricity's Tony Colman put together a "big band" to play soaring versions of cuts from his back catalogue at Hospitality In The Park. Two years on, he's gone further, delivering a new studio album - his first in three years - that offers up a particularly sumptuous, orchestrated take on drum and bass. There's barely a drum machine or sample in sight, while what electronic sounds are included have been used sparingly. It's impressive stuff, all told, with the assembled collective's warm and soulful sound providing enjoyable listening throughout the album's ten tracks. Is this the moment drum and bass grew up and became an established part of the musical order? Maybe, maybe not. Either way, "Building Better Worlds" is a very fine album.

Review: Since releasing his debut single in 1994, Tom Withers AKA Klute has been one of the most prolific and reliable artists in drum and bass, releasing well over half a century of single releases in the process. "Whatever It Takes" is his ninth LP in total and lands 21 years after his first. There's much to enjoy throughout, with the Ipswich-based artist giddily skipping between elastic, funk-fuelled workouts, soaring liquid anthems, marginally darker and moodier fare, acid-fired rollers and, as the album progresses, tech-house and techno-influenced four-to-the-floor cuts. Throw in a handful of melodious, IDM-flecked downtempo numbers and you have an ear-pleasing set of expertly produced electronic gems.

All the right vibes in all the right places, these all sound future fresh: DJ Hybrid's swashbuckling Dread bass backflips on "Special Request", the absolute bashy bless from Horace Andy and Marcus Visionary on "Sound Killer", the warmer reggae soul bubbles of Visionary's "Hustlin" and Truespirit's purring late 90s two-step homage "Deep In The Jungle". No filler in sight whatsoever.

Review: Integral by label name, integral to the scene full stop: Glenn and Zula's AI partnership has been a prominent and consistent voice over more than a decade. Since 2010 we've seen them dig deep into the album artform with "Stand Alone" kicking off a slew of LPs, currently climaxing with "The Series". Delivered over four parts - two last year, two this year - the full set spans their full gamut touching deep daydream rollers such as "Savour" to much darker, heavyweight pieces such as "Isolate". Each made for the club but executed with depth and restraint that lends itself to any scenario, it's a great way to sign out of this decade and prime us for what's to come. Integral by nature.

Review: Eight years after their ground-breaking "Resolution 653" full length, pioneering duo Instra:mental make a welcome return with their new album Timelines, and this first selection of tunes from it gives you a good idea why. "Pacific Heights" is a jumble of minimal drum beats and futuristic synth smears that is atmospheric, while "Sakura" is more sparse and zoned out thanks to forlorn chords which speak of romantic pain. Things slow down into deep rubbery rhythms on the lush "Photograph" while "End Credits" has an unexpected Balearic vibe to it, with breezy chords making for a mood that feels akin to gazing out to sea.

Review: Techmosphere 03 is a monstrous 25 track album on Scientific Records that will be available digitally soon, but before that comes a sampler packed with six gems from it, three of which are originals, and the other three are remixes. Silence Groove's remix of "Northern Light" and his original "Patterns" are two silky and liquid rollers that go super deep, while Electrosoul's take on Naibu's "Clouds" is much more ragged and rhythmic thanks to its crisp hits and rasping bass. There's more raw energy on the crashing loops of DJ Trax's "Just Breath" but a heavenly vocal will also suspend you in a celestial atmosphere in between drum breaks.

With collabos going back to 2005 on labels such as Hospital, Critical and Bassbin (to name but a few) their complementary vibes reach a new height as they set up a label strictly for them. And it starts right here. "Over Now" is pure cosmic soul sent from the year 2319, all planet-bounding breaks and hazy atmospheres, while "Jupiterize" whisks us off on a dreamy magic carpet ride around the galaxy as a jazzier spring is added to the evocative mix. Precision tag-team business, both men bring their a-game as always.

Review: What a ting! North America's running wild with drum & bass right now but here are two of the realest, most enduring names: Marcus Visionary and Liondub International. Four tracks taken from Marcus's recent mix album, highlights include aggy dancehall hip-hop fusion of "Put It On" and the utterly disgusting roller "Original Bad Boy" from Bladerunner and DJ Westy. Featuring the likes of Navigator and Rankin Joe, there's some of the strongest voices possible on this collection. The Atlantic gates are well and truly open.

  1. Gone Too Soon (Sully remix) (6:30)
  2. Limit Of Paradise (Falty DL remix) (5:37)
Review: Sneaker Social Club are not messing around! Following their previous outings from the legendary trio 2 Bad Mice comes remixes from two impeccably forward thinking break crafters; Sully takes "Gone Too Soon" into some fantastical places as the breaks scream jungle but the big breeze pads scream Alex Reece but both elements work together emotively. Falty DL, meanwhile, gives us a hardcore schooling on "Limit Of Paradise" with its heavily layered breaks, wall of sound pads and dynamic drops into spacious hooks. Bad to the (clear vinyl) bone!

Review: It would be fair to say that excitement has been building since Goldie announced the release of The Journey Man earlier this year. You see, the expansive, triple-vinyl full-length is the Metalheadz man's first album since 1998's patchy Saturnz Return, and is being trumpeted by those who've heard it in full as a triumphant return to form. It naturally features some sweeping, classical instrumentation, but there's nothing as self indulgent as the hour-long "Mother". Furthermore, Goldie has wisely delivered a set of high quality drum and bass that ticks numerous boxes - dancefloor darkness, jungle revivalism, liquid funk warmth - with a string of suitably impressive collaborators (Ulterior Motive, Swindle, Jose James, Natalie Williams, Terri Walker) swinging by to ensure the set oozes soul.

Review: Sublime retro future breaks from Keysound affiliate Etch. As suggested in the title, none of these breaks have real titles; it's just all about the crisp drum work, vast roominess and old school dynamics from the brushed drum swing of the first slice and the rubber ball bass of the second, right the way through the ghostly vocal tones and MC commands on the fourth slice, this is the sound of a man who knows his foundations inside out. Sneaker Social Club don't release anywhere near as much as they should.... But when they do you should always pay attention.

Review: Makato is often cited as one of the pioneering founders of Japan's drum & bass scene. He's now up to his sixth studio album and it finds his airy, rolling, sweet flowing beats all present and correct. "Tomodachi Sessions" derived from a series of collaborations with close friends who have all played a part in his 25 year career. DJ Marky, S.P.Y, Bop and MC Conrad all feature and lend their own personalities to an album that offers celebratory hands in the air tracks like "Shine On Through" next to more late night dancers like "Transparent" and melodic explorations like "Show Me How You Feel".
