Re:align EP
  1. Alternate Current - "Borrowed Language" (6:22)
  2. Dreadmaul & Tobe:n - "Homunculus" (6:08)
  3. LCP - "Off Limits" (5:22)
  4. Books - "Cosine" (4:57)
Review: Fresh off the back of Cryptographic's intense 'Echo' release comes this fitting V/A from the ever-intriguing Swiss experimental 170 label Re:st. Music to realign our Covid-ravaged chakras to 'Re:align' introduces three new names to the label; Alternate Current steams out of the gates with a dub techno juggernaut 'Borrowed Language' while Dreadmaul & Tobe:n whip a rhythmic stampede that's screaming to be unleashed on a big system with 'Homunculus'. Flip for two slightly more cosmic tales as label founder LCP gently pats us down with the trickling lolloping loops of 'Off Limits' before Books signs us out with the sparse and skippy 'Cosine'. Refine your alignments.

  3. If Your Happy & You Know It Take An E (feat Puffin' Billy) (4:33)
Review: Few artists are on the rise quite as rapidly as Lavery right now. He's delivering the goods time after time and this time is certainly no exception. Re-linking with J.Robinson's Meditator Music it's another deadly dispatch: "Badman Sound" kicks the party off with some classic ragga ruffage, "My Darling" flips from a loose-fitting soul sample into a badboy Dread bass style romp-up while "If You're Happy & You Know It" closes with a self-collabo as he tags in his rave alter ego Puffin Billy for a savage hardcore finale. Go with the furlough.

Nine Strings
Cat: META 76. Rel: 24 Jan 20
  1. Nine Strings (4:47)
  2. Eyes (4:28)
Review: Cor blimey governor, this'll put lead in your pencil. Radio 1 broadcaster and all-round badman Rene LaVice teams up with early 2000s donny hitmakers Future Cut for this incredible EP on Metalheadz. "Nine Strings" is pure breakbeat venom. Thunderous bass, grizzly funk and severe amounts of evil in all the right spaces and places, this is real grown up stuff right here. "Eyes" on the B carries just as much weight and horsepower but comes with just a smidgeon of deep dream soul.

Cat: LEMON 001. Rel: 26 Aug 20
  1. Law & Kola Nut - "Self Control" (5:09)
  2. Law - "1 4 Me" (4:50)
  3. Law & Kola Nut - "Flow State" (7:00)
  4. Kola Nut - "Dream World" (5:34)
Review: There is an irresistible crispiness to Law & Kola Nut's "Self Control" that draws you in here - the drums are pristine and precise, the fluttering snares up top float like a butterfly while the bass stings like a bee. It's a sweet roller indeed, and the soulful vocal only adds another level of lushness. Law goes solo for "1 4 Me" and gets even more summery and blissed out with some gorgeous keys raining down from above. When the duo link again for "Flow State", it's all about stripped back rhythm and dreamy vocal sounds and Nut then goes it alone to close out in deep and emotive fashion with his pad laced "Dream World."

Post Truth EP
Cat: REPRV 023. Rel: 26 Aug 20
  1. Intersect (6:27)
  2. Early Reflections (7:21)
  3. Igloo (6:33)
  4. Post-Truth (7:43)
Review: Repertoire have finally ensnared Law & Wheeler for their full extended play debut with this fittingly entitled Post-Truth EP. The pair have been producing together more than 18 months and now draw on all their experiences and influences and distill them into six sizzling tracks of forward facing, turbulent riddims. The range of moods is impressive, as they taking in stripped back and cavernous steppers like "Early Reflections" as well as darker vibe son "Intersect". "Igloo" is an all out drum assault that never lets up and "Post-Truth" continues on that theme as it sinks you ever deeper into an abyss.

  1. Warp One (6:46)
  2. Lifeform (7:15)
Review: Pioneer Ant Miles unearths two more unreleased gems from the DAT preservation. This time he's taken us back to 98. Made during the time Ram Trilogy were triple-handedly changing the game, both cuts have a gritty, stripped back charm of the era. "Warp One" has an almost "Turbulence" or "Ska" vibe with its wriggling twisted bassline infectiousness while "Lifeform" captures the techstep vibe of the time. All steppy and samurai with a touch of icy jazz. Timeless.

Frustration (remixes)
Frustration (remixes) (limited transparent green vinyl 12")
Cat: AMEN 019. Rel: 09 Oct 20
  1. Frustration (Morgan Spiced remix) (6:41)
  2. Frustration (Tim Reaper remix) (5:43)
Review: Amenology return with another essential science lesson, once again returning to the mysterious Link and their 'Frustration'. Having previously been given two treatments last year (Exoplanet and Voxphoria) it's now time for two prominent murksmiths to get their hands mucky; Jenga Soundsystem's Morgan Spiced hurls the classic jungle kitchen sink at it with rawhide edits and the warbliest reverse basses you'll hear this year. Reaper's twist also has an old school flavour but more in the pads and those unrelenting hardcore drums. Two absurdly good versions. Unleash some tension with 'Frustration'.

  1. Macca & Loz Contreras - "One Touch" (Technimatic remix) (5:15)
  2. Silence Groove - "Only You" (5:59)
Review: The words 'Technimatic' and 'remix' should be enough to whet most junglists' whistles right here... Taking Macca and Loz's 2014 breezy, break-fuelled roller and stripping back into something a little more delicate and hypnotic, it's straight out of the remix rule book. Flip for a brand new original from Polish player Silence Groove. Conjuring up similar feels to Brookes Brothers "Tear You Down" but with heavier emphasis on the orchestral sample, it's coated in so much emotion you may have to provide post-drop counselling to the more sensitive members of your dancefloor.

  2. Danny Byrd - "Gold Rush" (feat Brookes Brothers) (6:27)
  3. Logistics - "Jungle Music" (4:49)
  4. Commix - "Bear Music" (6:12)
Review: There is one Hospital that you always want to visit, and that is the one overseen by these drum & bass legends. For the 12th instalment of their Classic Symptoms series they dive deep into the vaults to unearth four gems from the 2006 to 2009 era. Nu:Tone gets the appointment underway with the retells roller that is 'Missing Link' before things get super sweet with the liquid flow and soul drenched vocals of 'Gold Rush' feat Brookes Brothers by Danny Byrd. Logistics goes for a drilling old school beat with classic samples and heady vibes and closing things out is Commix, whose stripped back and shadowy stepper 'Bear Music' sounds as crucial now as it ever did.

Review: The Classic Symptoms series is all about Hospital serving up the finest moments from their rich back catalogue. This is the 13th such instalment and features four more perfectly nostalgic jams from drum & bass kingpins S.P.Y, Keeno, Nu:Tone and LSB. All of these will send you right back to the 2014-2016 era in which they were made. As such you can expect plenty of euphoric melodies toe wash over you with soulful, smile-broadening vocals embellishing the grooves and rich, dynamic drum work carrying things forwards into the future, even now years later.

Jah Fucking Jungle
Cat: MHR 004. Rel: 11 May 20
  1. Jah Fucking Jungle (5:34)
  2. Champion Sound Lover (5:15)
Review: Fire in the bloodclart hole! Sheffield's Left Lucas makes his debut on burgeoning Canadian jungle joint Mos-Hi with two dangerously savage slabs. Bringing his mate Sum along for the ride, together the pair two very distinct skank-packed holes in your soul. "Jah Fucking Jungle" warms up all sweet and dubwise but when those breaks fire into the mix prepare to be annihilated. "Champion Sound Love" does the sweet thing on side B, too. But rather than chop your head off with the breaks when it drops, it retains more of its groove, soul and just a few flashes of one of the most important classics of all jungle time. Totally scientific...

  14. Don't Give Up Now (feat Bulgarian Goddess) (6:09)
Review: Following its CD and digital download release last autumn, London Elektricity's fine new album - Tony Colman's eighth studio set - finally gets a vinyl release. For the uninitiated, "Building Better Worlds" builds (sorry) on the "big band" concept Colman unveiled at Hospitality In The Park in 2017, offering soaring, orchestrated tracks that take drum & bass to musically expansive new heights. There's barely a drum machine or sample in sight, while what electronic sounds that have been included are used sparingly. The results are undeniably impressive, with the assembled collective's warm and soulful tracks providing enjoyable listening throughout. It might raise a few eyebrows amongst jungle purists, but ignore the haters: this is a very fine album indeed.

Review: A new Lone album from Matt Cutler represents an about turn away from the more mellow tones found on 2014's Reality Testing back in favour for the rave tropes that characterised his output circa Pineapple Crush. The nine tracks on Levitate are rife with the energetic fervour of hardcore and jungle, blending peppy tempos and nimble drum licks with the trademark graceful melodies one would expect from a Lone record. You should be familiar with "Backtail Was Heavy," already been premiered via a phone line service and "Vapour Trail" which formally announced Levitate and the other seven cuts from Lone show Cutler is at the top of his game.

Review: Following Lavery's crucial 019 comes this beautiful V/A from a range of exciting established names and fresh heads. Focussing on the deeper side of J Robinson's label, Theory takes the lead wirth a Goodlooking style deamy stepper, Robinson himself links with the one and only Ink for a stunning and sultry R&B flavoured breakbeat gem while on the flip Repertoire's Law & Kola Nut continue the soul vibes on "Your Love Is So True" before Wetman dries us of with pure science as "Golden Teacher" signs us out with rattling drums and deep breath vocals that totally live up to the Meditator name.
