001 EP (12")
Cat: GDNCE 001. Rel: 04 Jul 17
  1. The Wobbler (feat SP:MC) (4:45)
  2. Clap Ya (4:21)
  3. Anode (feat Icicle) (4:55)
  4. Kamakura (4:44)
Review: A brand new label and brand new chapter for Ulterior Motive. Guidance was the name of the night they held in Bournemouth as they cut their teeth and chowed down on their craft. Now the Headz alumni return to these roots with four stark, stripped back and roughened constructs; "The Wobbler" takes the lead with its woozy synth hits and SP's distinctive flow. "Clap Ya" is all about the sci-fi bashy steppery while "Anode" sees them sparring with Icicle on a brittle, sinewy one-note jam that gets very messy very quickly. "Kamakura" sends us packing to the Orient for the final excursion as eastern strings and scales shroud a wriggling, spacious drum arrangement that smacks of the duo's originality. We need more Guidance like this.

  3. This Station (7:04)
  4. Send Me Back (6:26)
Review: Essex-based DJ Trax has been churning out the hits since 1993 (first hit single "High Time on Moving Shadow), making him one of jungle's survivors. He doesn't release that much these days, but what he does put out tends to be rather good. "20,000 Beats Under The Sea", the title track from this first solo single since 2014, is a wonderful blast from the past: a punchy, party-starting fusion of original jungle drums, jazzy samples and the kind of dreamy electronics frequently found on late '90s Good Looking Records releases. You'll find more ballsy, bass-heavy jungle pressure on the cracking "This Station" is a head-in-the-clouds early D&B roller built around metallic carnival percussion. On "No Name" KJ Sawka (Pendulum) delivers his live drums!

  1. Sedition (6:32)
  2. Crown Of Nails (6:26)
Review: One year later, UVB-76's shadowy collective 4 6 2 5 strike again with two more unique startling schematics. Flexing across the tempo axis, "Sedition" leads with a fast 170 twist as hard pneumatic kicks cut through the dense foggy atmospherics before doubling up the momentum and taking unpredictable twists midway. "Crown Of Nails" maintains the hunchback pressure and that heavy foreboding sense synonymous with each member of the collective, but does so at a cool 105BPM pace giving space for each percussive element to ricochet around your purdy little pranged-out soul.

A New Day (12")
Cat: QEW 001. Rel: 08 Mar 17
  1. A New Day (8:28)
  2. Conscience (7:44)
Review: On previous outings, Toronto bass head Rumbleton has stuck to a retro-futurist script, delivering killer tributes to '93 style jungle. While it's been two years since his last single, it's quite heartening to find that he's still as obsessed with the roots of drum & bass as ever before. To be fair, A-side "A New Day" accompanies some brilliantly cut-up jungle breakbeats and pounding sub-bass with the kind of dark textures you'd find on Burial records, as well as some tech-step style electronics. B-side "Conscious", on the other hand, doesn't strive as hard for experimental acceptance: while the fearsome 'riddims' are savagely cut-up, the booming bass and rastaman vocal samples could have been taken wholesale from early jungle classics.

Absolute Zero (1-sided 12")
Cat: INFRALTD 001. Rel: 09 Jul 18
  1. Absolute Zero (5:08)
Review: Pow: another ageless dub from J Majik's personal vaults, "Absolute Zero" was one of the many unreleased space expeditions under Jamie Spratling's Innervisions alter ego. Composed around 94/5 and galvanised with incredible drums that stand up to (and beyond) today's production standards, this one track damager lives in its own atmosphere. Unapologetic, evocative and colder than a night with the ex on Pluto. Visionary.

  1. Nothing Crazy (6:18)

  3. Lucky Number 12 (6:09)
  4. Soul Deep Management (7:06)
Review: US skateboarding magazine Jenkem Mag has long hosted DJ mixes in a range of styles on its website, and in 2017 the spin-off Jenkem Records launched with a multi-genre compilation called 'Beginnings'. Now, over two years later (we're clearly operating on 'skater time' here), the label's second release is this four-track EP from Brooklyn duo and recently announced Rinse FM residents AceMoMa, and it's almost as eclectic as its album-length predecessor, taking in off-kilter melodic house ('Ethereal Stepping'), deep tribal techno ('Nothing Crazy') and drum & bass (the retro junglism of 'Lucky Number 12' and the Bukem-esque 'Soul Deep Management').

Review: Last year's hair-raising adventures of everyone's favourite jungle superhero Action Saxxon continue to see the light of day as Liondub drops this second EP of album favourite on 12". Running the full range, we kick off with gritty atonal groans with DJ Limited ("Way Back") and end with one of the fattest, distorted rollers the Norwich man has mustered ("Rollcall"). In between we're treated to sensual jazzy flutters ("Cherry On Top") and a wobbler so flabby it often swaps wardrobes with your dad. Action stations!

  4. My Way (feat Concept & Shnek) (4:53)
Review: Artificial Intelligence welcome Austrian duo Air K & Cephei back to the fold with this gorgeous four-tracker. Their first full EP for the label, they've delivered in all directions; "All You Know" is a vocal hurricane armed with an equally hair-raising bassline, "Smiles" is an introspective-yet-sensual piano-tickler while "Reflections" is a genuine cosmic crusade built with layers and textures that go on for days. Finally "My Way" closes the show with a nice bit of closure. With added touches from Concept & Shnek, it's a powerful orchestral piece with all the essential drama you need in a summer set. Epic.

  3. Wah Wah Track (6:49)
Review: Over a year has passed since he last appeared on SUNANDBASS Records with his "Serious" EP, FD returns to his spiritual stomping ground with three more timeless jams. As always with FD, the record covers the full spectrum; "All Yours" has a silky, soulful, Lenzman feel resonating throughout, "Second Villain" sounds like Randall in a basement at 3am while "Wah Wah Track" is a sunset reloader in waiting. Think Marky, think Patife, think Calibre. You know the drill...

  4. Cold Wave (3:26)
  5. Mind Over Matter (feat Inja) (3:32)
Review: Over the last decade, few drum & bass producers have impressed more than Bristol-based Brazilian S.P.Y. While his default setting seems to be summery, string-drenched and giddily soulful, he's also capable of delivering dark and weighty dancefloor onslaughts. Certainly, that seems to be the idea behind the Alone in the Dark series, which launched earlier this summer. There's naturally much to enjoy on this second double-pack in the series, from the booming sub-bass, scorching beats, wavy vocal samples and twinkling pianos of "Get Up" and aggressive, stripped-back moodiness of "Cold Wave" (complete with both industrial sounding riffs and pulsating sub-bass), to the hip-hop/dark jungle fusion of "Mind Over Matter" and ridiculously heavy opener "Termination".

  4. Lockdown (4:44)
  5. Dreaming (4:40)
Review: Bristol-based Brazilian S.P.Y has been in fine form this year, churning out the hits at a rate of knots. Here he serves up five more slammers to round off the well-received Alone in the Dark trilogy. Opener "Transmission" is undeniably one of his moth forthright tunes to date - a bombastic, riot-inducing anthem fuelled by thunderous electro bass and mind-altering riffs. There's also a tech-tinged feel to the rave-meets-D&B heaviness of "Transmission", while "Dominator Mode" contains some of his toughest drums to date. Elsewhere, "Lockdown" is a buzzing hum of throbbing energy and "Dreaming" tips a wink to the producer's liquid past via a wonderfully sauced-eyed fusion of blissful musicality and tight bottom-end pressure.

  4. Eazy Man (6:38)
Review: Foundation X founder Gavin Skitt has been active in the D&B sound since the turn of the century, which may in part explain the giddy retro-futurism behind the occasional Amenizer project - a series of no-holds-barred EPs that often look to early '80s hardcore and jungle for inspiration. Skitt's latest contribution to the series - his first since 2016 - begins with the dubwise musical flourishes, booming sub-bass and scattergun jungle rhythms of "Tippatone", before careering towards '93 style hardcore/proto-jungle madness on "Bully". Over on side B, "Freedom" sees Skitt doff a cap to the pioneers of ragga jungle, while "Eazy Man" is a booming, bombastic fusion of off-kilter D&B drums, fuzzy horns and echoing reggae vocal samples.

Review: What a year to be a Threshold enthusiast: first came his crucial "Blackboard" EP on AKO Beatz, now his return to Fresh 86 with four more singular cuts. As the title suggests, it's a deep space mission from the off; those big paranoid chords and foreboding organs on the title track, the zero gravity breaks and textures of "Velvet Pum", the turbine bass and creepy harmonics of "Talking Reece" and the all-out asteroid bounding jungle finale "Mars Attacks". Galvanised by a strong nod to Moving Shadow but done packing a 2020 punch, Threshold's on an incredible roll this year.

Review: Break's fifth album Another Way is about drop and this is the second teaser of what's to come. First up is "Conversations", a spacious digidub wonder that taps into Break's classic reggae sound (think "Love So True") and is charmed to smithereens by Fats and Watkiss. Meanwhile "Alpha" goes right back to Break's relentless tear up sessions with one of the most brutal basslines he's done in years. And we thought his previous release "Keepin It Raw" was big...

  4. Beliefs (bonus Beat) (4:39)
Review: Since re-launching three years ago, pioneering jungle imprint Kemet has offered up a mixture of unreleased '90s cuts, timely reissues and new tracks inspired by the formative years of drum & bass. This EP from long-serving contemporary producer Julian Flowers AKA Drama1 fits into the latter category, offering up four authentic jungle rollers that recall the Halcyon days of muddy outdoor raves powered by colossal soundsystems. Opener "Dub Fi Dub" is deliciously raw, weighty and loose like the best early jungle cuts, while "Eternity" pairs bombastic Amen breaks with long, elongated sub-bass. "Need For Love" sees Flowers doff a cap to early dreamy D&B tracks (with sun-kissed success), before "Beliefs (Bonus Beat)" closes proceedings with a heady mixture of silly samples, big breakbeats and even bigger sub-bass.

  1. Bad Man (6:04)
  2. Air Raid (6:45)
Review: Former Concord Dawn man Evan Short last recorded as Kiljoy in the early 2000s. In fact, this boisterous outing on Function Records appears to be his first outing under the alias for 14 years. Now based in the Cook Islands and working as a fraud investigator (true story bro), Short has lost none of his dancefloor fire or focus. "Bad Man" is particularly potent, with the New Zealander peppering a blistering jungle rhythm and heavyweight bassline with angular rave stabs and fizzing sound effects. "Air Raid" is similarly retro-futurist in tone, with foreboding and doom-laden riffs buzzing around another formidably sweaty old school drum track and aggressive bass.

Review: Aussie breaksmith oft spotted lurking under the alias Sean Thomas or T McAlister, Cop Envy brings the broken heat to Cry Baby for the label's second release. Two sides, two stories; "Balanced" is a woozy aquatic halftime affair with big blunderbuss drums and rich abyssal textures while "Leisure" brings the tempo down for a groove that digs right into the genus of the hardcore continuum. Rolling, iced but not without its machine funk warmth. Nothing to cry about here at all...
