Without A Trace EP (double 12")
Cat: EXIT 071. Rel: 21 Feb 17
  1. Without A Trace (4:12)
  2. Solitude (4:54)
  3. Taurus (9:08)
  4. Killa (4:15)
Review: Skeptical & Alix Perez... Contemporary drum & bass production tag-teams really don't get any sharper, deeper or slicker. Following previous collaborations "Elephant Dreams" and "Room 667" with four stark cuts, get ready for a lean, mean adventure: "Without A Trace" grunts with a grainy textured hook that's one of a kind, "Solitude" stutters and wriggles with minimal mystery - each of the key ingredients comprising a beastly groove that defies the sum of its parts. Further into the odyssey we hit the incredible oceanic synth bliss, cosmic soul and jungle tidal waves of "Taurus" and get our creps stuck in the gooey swampy halftime gully soup of "Killa". Crucial.

  3. Brain Music (Slick Shoota remix)
  4. Wet (House Of Black Lanterns remix)
Review: Skubi steps into the limelight with his debut release for Modern Ruin, an imprint reserved strictly for the finest in footwork killers. "Brain Music" is basically a modern hip-hop lick with cavernous low-ends and that familiar juke vocal stutter. The same goes for "Wet", a relatively darker, dreamier sort of affair. Remixes comes from none other than Slick Shoota and House Of Black Lanterns, the former opting for a jungle swing while the latter twists and funks that juke into an even nuttier bundle of drums and percussion. Large.

  2. See Yourself (6:03)
  3. Tape Rock (5:26)
  4. White Monk (6:31)
Review: Young Brighton producer Slacker (no not the legendary progressive house act of the same name) aka Sam Black is up next on Lobster Theremin following up great releases by Asok, nthng and Unfinished Portraits. He's channelling the jungle vibes of yesteryear (think Peshay) on the classic euphoria of "Amen To The Lonely" while acid house/Summer of Love aesthetics are channeled convincingly on "See Yourself" and capturing that classic Lobster Theremin tape saturated vibe. On the flip, it's all about the deep 303 therapy of "White Monk" where he works that little silver Roland box to the max, powered away by dusty 808 drum patterns beneath.

  1. Slimzee Vs As.If Kid - "Judgement Day" (4:16)
  2. As.If Kid - "Shooter" (DnB mix - DJ Garna remix) (10:01)
Review: Following their razor edge four-tracker earlier this summer Rinse co-founder and foundation grime pioneer Slimzee and new partner in crime As.If.Kid maintain the heat as they declare "Judgement Day" once and for all. Bell-chiming brutality with a rugged slo-mo jungle charm, there's almost a rock-like looseness to the drums and grunting bass as it rolls out with unique energy. Flip for a remix from fellow OG DJ Garna who reinforces As.If.Kid's "Shooter" with an authentic jungle rinse-out.

  2. Impish - "So Sick" (5:23)
Review: The ever-dependable Fokuz welcome Break to the fray for a killer remix of last year's soul-burner from Soligen & Type 2. Adding a touch of grit and a brand new drumsuit, it's yet another killer strike for all concerned. Speaking of drums, Impish's "So Sick" is a proper jungle mission that's powered by serious live drumsounds. All splashy cymbals and one-inch-punch kicks, it's coated with a hornet bassline and pads so old school their Moschinos still have the tags on.

  2. Curtain Twitcher (Nina Kraviz Samba version) (5:00)
  3. Looking Glass (5:44)
  4. Tiresias (Anastasia Kristensen rework) (7:32)
Review: Unsurprisingly, Paul Woolford's Special Request project has become a reference point for London's Houndstooth imprint, the label ran and operated by Fabric, and he's back once more to drop the freshest techno sounds around. What makes this 12" even more special is a two-part appearance from Nina Kraviz, who remixes "Curtain Twitcher" twice, the first being a moody, hubby techno experiment and the second a more light-hearted 'Samba version' that carries the same sort of future-minimalism that says so much with so little. On the flip, "Looking Glass" is a heavy-handed, bad-mannered jungle experiment that lays down an insanely heavy groove of banging breaks sparse bleeps; Anastasia Kristensen's rework of "Tiresias" thrashes out a punitive techno bullet that, once again, is made for a contemporary techno floor.

  3. Remember Me (5:02)
Review: As the sun still sets on their evergreen third album How We Live Spectrasoul deliver a series of killer remixes and versions to celebrate. First up is this golden twist from Calibre. Immaculately redressed to highlight the delicate emotion and beauty of the original, it's yet another heart-stopping work of art from the singular Signature bossman. Spectrasoul themselves take care of "Say What" themselves by twisting up the swaggering halftimer into a beautiful rolling moonlit 170 jam while "Remember Me" closes the wax with its spacious plucks and barbed vocal. You won't forget this in a hurry.

Review: The Brighton boys return with another power-punch collection on their own label Ish Chat. Once again it covers the full spectrum and scope of their skills: Tracks such as "Stock Sound" and "Tough Linen" really do hit hard with their full-flavour basslines and spiked out dynamics while "Waiting For..." reflects their soulful, musical side and "AKA Yoob" takes us to the left of their creations with daring, bouncy experimentalism that sounds like no one else. Spectrasoul are smashing it this year.

  2. Cold Call (5:39)
Review: It's here! After a digital release several months back, Spirit's barbed wire jungle blazers "Murderer" and "Cold Call" finally see the waxy light of day. The former is a rasping, rolling slice of haunted 94 style edginess with a wry Halloween feel to the atmosphere while the latter is all about that rich analogue bassline that bounces between the two-step spaces. Following the heat of his insane Dispatch EP earlier this year, Spirit really smashing 2018 to pieces.

  1. Think (5:44)
  2. Bounty Killer (5:39)
Review: Continually on-point, Spirit follows his recent Function 12" with two more outstanding moments in musical futurism. "Think" surfaces from the dubplate ocean once and for all with its overwhelming dub tidal waves and soul-shuddering pads while "Bounty Killer" just goes straight for the jugular with a vicious riff that stinks of The End around '99. Classic Spirit.

  4. Lockdown (4:44)
  5. Dreaming (4:40)
Review: Bristol-based Brazilian S.P.Y has been in fine form this year, churning out the hits at a rate of knots. Here he serves up five more slammers to round off the well-received Alone in the Dark trilogy. Opener "Transmission" is undeniably one of his moth forthright tunes to date - a bombastic, riot-inducing anthem fuelled by thunderous electro bass and mind-altering riffs. There's also a tech-tinged feel to the rave-meets-D&B heaviness of "Transmission", while "Dominator Mode" contains some of his toughest drums to date. Elsewhere, "Lockdown" is a buzzing hum of throbbing energy and "Dreaming" tips a wink to the producer's liquid past via a wonderfully sauced-eyed fusion of blissful musicality and tight bottom-end pressure.

  4. Cold Wave (3:26)
  5. Mind Over Matter (feat Inja) (3:32)
Review: Over the last decade, few drum & bass producers have impressed more than Bristol-based Brazilian S.P.Y. While his default setting seems to be summery, string-drenched and giddily soulful, he's also capable of delivering dark and weighty dancefloor onslaughts. Certainly, that seems to be the idea behind the Alone in the Dark series, which launched earlier this summer. There's naturally much to enjoy on this second double-pack in the series, from the booming sub-bass, scorching beats, wavy vocal samples and twinkling pianos of "Get Up" and aggressive, stripped-back moodiness of "Cold Wave" (complete with both industrial sounding riffs and pulsating sub-bass), to the hip-hop/dark jungle fusion of "Mind Over Matter" and ridiculously heavy opener "Termination".

Review: Two key prospects in drum & bass's emerging new breed, Stealth and Stylus hook up for a gritty, snappy growler that's not too far away from the work of Optiv & BTK or even Calyx & TeeBee. Executed with precision sharpness, "Dire Straits" is a far cry from the guitar noodling rockers that share its name. Meanwhile on the B we find Stealth going solo on "Deep Inside". Armed with a Darrison-level vocal sample, it treads a fine line between filth and industrial soul. Lovely stuff.

Review: Level up! Strategy sheds a little light on skills you might not know he's got in the form of "Lanterns", his debut EP. Usually known for rallying up the troops with Dub Phizix and laying down rapid-fire bars, here we find the Salford vibe lord showcasing his beat skills... And they're serious. From the click-boom ricochets of the title track to the rare-cooked menace of "Kings Of Kochi" via the waspy political triple-skipper "Put God First", this is Strategy writing a whole new chapter. 1. Soundboy Don't Push Your Luck (4:36)
  2. 368ft High & Rising (6:38)
Review: In the eleven years that have passed since he made his debut, Jack Stevens AKA Sully has earned a reputation for making "rude" bass music that gleefully mashes together elements of D&B, old skool jungle, dubstep and UK garage. His latest two-track missive is a shameless tribute to the jungle era, with A-side "Soundboy Don't Push Your Luck" peppering a sharp, edit-tasty junglist riddim with rumbling bass, toaster samples and a hooky female chorus that doffs a cap to vintage lovers rock. It's utterly bonkers and rather silly, but also tons of fun and an almost guaranteed floorfiller. On the flip, he doffs a cap to early drum and bass, flitting between ultra-heavy breakbeats, sun-kissed instrumental samples and sharply cut-up ragga MC samples.

  3. Luminous (Paradox remix) (9:54)
Review: All bless Synkro and his brand new label Synkro Musik. It rises off into the ether with two more truly startling, stop-what-you-are-doing-and-listen compositions. "Luminous" is a twinkling nod to the autonomic golden age with its layers of textures and rolling sense of momentum and soft urgency. "Weakness" is so much more delicate and emotional. Hazy, mournful and poignant, it's Synkro in stop-what-you-are-doing-and-cry mode. Finally the legend that is Paradox steps up for a beautifully spacious remix that teeters mischievously on his Alaska remit with a touch of Seba to the bounding energy and atmosphere.

  4. Etch - "Predator" (7:16)
Review: Green Village is a label operating out of Jersey City that deals in all manner of sounds from rugged house to scuffed up techno, but with a distinct bent towards broken rhythms and plenty of bass. This various artists 12" plies a diverse trade, with all tracks bound together by their ruffness. Theft & TOYC bring some loud and lurid bass synths to their snaking slice of oddball club music "Atlantic", while BD1982 places focus on dense layers of choppy drums and needlepoint acid arpeggios. Eighth Ruin delivers a truly head turning beat with the appropriately named "Whip", and then Etch pays tribute to a classic movie with the excellent breakbeat science of "Predator".

US mystery man Tlim Shug paves the path with chugging Chi-town jack that wouldn't go amiss in a Farina set while Playstation (a Frenchman you may know as Maukook) lays down an Omni Trio flavoured jungle joint that's coated in pads so thick and breezy you can taste them. Review: Tokyo Prose deserves some serious props. His track record has been faultless. Largely riding shotgun with New Zealand label Samurai, he's not dropped a dodgy record yet. And this is one of his best. "Raised By Wolves" first appeared on Samurai's Ways Of The Samurai compilation last year. Now up for full release, it glistens with soft-jazzy edge and an overall Good Looking groove. Previously unreleased "Status Anxiety", meanwhile, is a true gem. Emotional with hints of ice and plenty of star-gazing, this is what the running man dance was invented for. A stellar release.

Review: The second instalment of New Zealander Tokyo Prose's surprise album drop on Lenzman's The North Quarter; once again it's another sublime, dynamic soul out whittled down to perfection. The long demanded dub "Brilliant Corners" takes the lead with some stunningly arranged and cascading ivories while "Runaway" takes us deeper into the spacier corners of Tokyo Prose's palette with faraway vocals from KSR. Flip for the biggest vocal cut on the 12" as Steo brings his signature honeyed dulcet soul with an almost gospel level of urgency on "Lift You Up" before "Back To You" closes with more of TP's distinctive fluttering piano work. Gracefully does it.

After years in the pop game, making number one hits for more songs than you care to sing along to in the shower, the Renegade Hardware renegades return to D&B on wax with the able co-piloting from Bournemouth's do-no-wrong duo Ulterior Motive. "Flash Mob" an all-out, balls-out roller with menacing late 90s undertones, "Bagleys" is a Spirit-esque stepper with sublime percussive Q&A "Second Nature" closes the show on a beautiful Bristolian funk flex.
