ACRYLIC 001 (splattered vinyl 12" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: ACRYLIC 001. Rel: 27 Feb 18
  1. Shrunken Heads (6:48)
  2. Shrunken Heads (Kid Drama remix) (6:02)
  3. Motion Design (6:08)
Review: Cardiff meets Berlin on wax: having previously collaborated on Noisia's Invisible, Quartz & Survey tag up again on their own label with two crucial originals and naughty remix from your favourite's producer favourite producer Kid Drama. "Shrunken Heads" gets busy with the clicks, claps and wild percussion while Kid Drama smashes it up with a warped toxic bassline. "Motion Design" closes the B with sparse, steppy, iced-out experience that comes complete with its own black hole bassline. Wonderfully warped... Bring on ACRYLIC 002.

  1. Random Movement - "I Stayed Around" (Lenzman remix) (5:40)
  2. Facing Jinx - "Meet You There" (feat PET) (6:47)
Review: Fokuz fire off another deep groove doublet: Lenzman applies his spacey, cosmic sheen to Random Movement's 2015 summer bluster cut a plunging drone feel to the bass and unrelenting, rolling drums. Facing Jinx maintains the deep space feel of the 12" with "Meet You There" as lilting pads and a roomy bassline weave and bob amid a tightrope two-step. Classy.

Greetings From Jamaica (hand-stamped red vinyl 10")
Cat: RASTA 006V. Rel: 17 Jun 16
  1. Greetings (4:54)
  2. Babylon Pressure (4:33)
Review: Vibez almighty! Another skank-packed doublet from Dutch soundsystem crew. This time Gunmen and Mystic Pulse are at the controls... The former gets his digidub dancehall vibe on with rapid-fire MC toasting and booty-busting halftime switches ("Greetings") while the latter carves out a soulful sun-kissed shaker that skanks so sweetly it could make Aries blush. Highly limited... Don't sleep.

Don't Fool Rasta (hand-stamped 10")
Cat: RASTA 004V. Rel: 31 Jul 15
  1. Fussin & Fightin (5:14)
  2. Don't Fool Rasta (4:30)
Review: Since launching last summer, Pixel & Mystic Pulse's Rasta Vibez label has carved a niche for itself among the drum and bass community for those seeking out some dub and reggae flecked jungle cuts for the dance. Number four in the series sticks to that formula with typically rowdy results with A-side track "Fussin & Fightin" the one here. Pixel & Mystic Pulse beef up the Dennis Brown classic of the near-same name, adding some sub weight and plenty of junglist breakbeat ripples. The more adventurous selectors might want to try mixing this with "Armagideon Time" by Willie Williams.

World A Jungle Music (hand-stamped vinyl 10")
Cat: RASTA 002V. Rel: 08 Oct 14
  1. Ice Cream Sound
  2. World A Jungle Music
Review: Launched over the summer, the Rasta Vibez label looks to bridge the gap between drum and bass and classic dub and reggae that has grown somewhat since the heyday of Jungle. If you were swayed by the distinct charms of the debut drop Jungle On Broadway, it's highly likely you will be compelled to check out this second 12". There's no complex science to either "Ice Cream Sound" or "World A Jungle Music" just a well executed take on a formula that has worked perfectly well many times over; delay and fx meet classic dub strains and jungle rhythms uptown

  3. Monarchy (6:09)
  4. Unrest (6:06)
Review: Due to his immense proliferation and consistent ability to hurt your soul just in the right spot, there are scurrilous rumours that Tim Reaper is actually a machine. Like some type of breakbeat $60 million dollar man made up of the perfect melting pot attitude, uncompromised junglist characteristics and skillish studiocraft, he's too good to be true. As is this new batch on 7th Storey. Ranging from the Krome & Time-style rattling drums and blissful chords of "Your Trip" to the outrageous chops and fizzy breaks of "Unrest", Reaper has just left us another load of rewards to reap. Man or machine? We don't care as long as bangers like these keep flying our way.

  3. Tim Reaper & Dwarde - "Track 3" (5:11)
  4. Dwarde & Gand - "Track 4" (6:53)
Review: Since establishing the series back in 2016, Tim Reaper and Dwarde have made sure that each Globex Corp 12" comes packed to the rafters with ethereal and atmospheric drum and bass. Predictably, you'll find more of the same on the series first outing of 2018. Reaper is naturally in the thick of the action, first joining forces with Worldwide Epidemic for the spacey and bass-heavy, jungle-goes-techno stomp of "Track 1", before working alongside Dwarde and Gand on the dreamy deep jungle of "Track 2". Turn to the flipside for Reaper and Dwarde's bouncy, breakbeat techno workout "Track 3", where deep space chords float above a decidedly hectic rhythm track, and the sub-heavy jungle jazziness of Dwarde and Gand's "Track 4", which makes great use of some cheeky MC Hammer samples.

  1. Wake Up (4:27)
  2. Cocaine (4:03)
  3. Kitty Kitty (4:35)
  4. Turn Off The Lights (4:27)
Review: Shut Up & Dance! A legendary act and a direct order as the recently revived Deep Jungle imprint returns with another collection of unreleased rarities, this time from hardcore dons PJ & Smiley. Back to 93: "Wake Up" will stir the woken among us with its paranoid chords and urgent voice sample, "Cocaine" subverts the classic detuned rave synth stabs with total psychosis while "Kitty Kitty" is the trippy riposte to the Prodigy's "Charlie". Finally "Turn Off The Lights" sends for the guillotine with equal measures of manic urgency and dreamy softness. Something wicked is coming.

The Redders EP (red vinyl 12" + MP3 download code)
Cat: CRITSYS 005. Rel: 15 Jul 16
  1. Redders & Sam Binga & Hyroglifics - "No Go" (3:14)
  2. Redders & Gorgon Sound - "96 In One" (4:20)
  3. Redders & Sam Binga - "Dem Ones" (2:15)
  4. Redders & Moresounds - "Sexy Or Sweet" (2:43)
  5. Ruffhouse & Clarity - "Aphasia" (Redders & Sam Binga remix) (4:47)
  6. Redders & Sam Binga & Hyroglifics - "Vintage" (feat MC DRS) (4:50)
Review: MC-focused EPs aren't particularly common in D&B. They're even less common on Critical. In fact this is the first. And it's a delight from the off as Redders teams up with mates old and new for a body of work that's more album than EP. "No Go" is all space-funk oddness with barely a bar in sight, "96 In One" is rapid fire storytelling over a dancehall version, "Dem Ones" is Redders' take on a dry-humping love song while "Sexy Or Sweet" sits somewhere between Toddla T and Barry White. Winding up "Aphasia" sees Redders and Sam flip Ruffhouse's dark tribal stamps into a carnival killer and "Vintage" sees the Bristol-based MC go toe-to-toe with the best MC in the game. One of a kind.

  4. We Were Kings (feat Lenzman & Luce) (4:59)
  5. In My Life (5:28)
Review: Ol' Redeyes is back! Usually spotted fraternising and flexing on his own Vandal imprint, here Lenzman invites him to the North Quarter for the first artist-signed EP... and he doesn't disappoint! Once again it's an extended affair as the Toulouse talent weaves and glides us through the hip-hop/D&B conscious. From the smoky Cali-style "100 Porsches To The Stars" to the glistening strings and unhurried golden rolls of "We Were Kings" by way of overwhelmingly soulful "Keep On". Another genuine gem from Leiden.

  1. Avenoir (5:35)
  2. Chibaku Tensei (5:26)
Review: Currently in a state of creative flux, ducking and diving between the realms of halftime and heavy D&B hurtage, 170 workouts and 140 monsters, Reso is back in the hot seat after several years focussing on scoring for games. This second instalment of his RX0 series is a great example of him in all-out balls-out mode: "Avenoir" is a bone rattling drumfunk beast, "Chibaku Test" is a white knuckle grizzle fest charged by pure break grit. Essential for all: No one does D&B like Reso.

A New Day (12")
Cat: QEW 001. Rel: 08 Mar 17
  1. A New Day (8:28)
  2. Conscience (7:44)
Review: On previous outings, Toronto bass head Rumbleton has stuck to a retro-futurist script, delivering killer tributes to '93 style jungle. While it's been two years since his last single, it's quite heartening to find that he's still as obsessed with the roots of drum & bass as ever before. To be fair, A-side "A New Day" accompanies some brilliantly cut-up jungle breakbeats and pounding sub-bass with the kind of dark textures you'd find on Burial records, as well as some tech-step style electronics. B-side "Conscious", on the other hand, doesn't strive as hard for experimental acceptance: while the fearsome 'riddims' are savagely cut-up, the booming bass and rastaman vocal samples could have been taken wholesale from early jungle classics.

  1. Jungle Music (5:58)
  2. Cloudless (6:20)
Review: Swedish sound controller Seba has dented 2015 with continuous and consistent releases, re-issues and remixes. This could quite easily be his best yet, though; "Jungle Music" is an ode to the era he first made his name. Dark, twisted and dangerous; there are many jungle tributes around right now but this is definitely one of the most authentic. "Cloudless" flips the switch with rolling soul style. Comprising warm humming subs, floaty trumpets and star-gazing synths, it plays the consummate counter to the devilish lead banger. Classic Seba.

  2. Seba - "A Little Close" (5:35)
Review: Seba is up there with Break, Total Science and S.P.Y when it comes to that perfect tight-rope walk between dark and light. Following some recent devilish drumfunk pieces, he's dipped back into golden liquid with the help of smoky horns, lilting Calibre-style pianos and the delicious dulcets of Jenna G. "A Little Close" continues the cloud-chowing vibe with a light-footed arpeggios, surging pads and woozy, yearning vocal. The stuff dreams are made of.

Etherall (12" + sticker)
Cat: PM 036. Rel: 17 Jul 18
  1. Etherall (6:21)
  2. Always (5:58)
Review: Few producer / vocalist partnerships in drum & bass have been as enduring or iconic as Seba and Robert Manos. Even though they both work autonomously with other artists, you can really feel it when they work together. Mystical, moving, soulful but heavier than lead boots, it's been this way since 2005's "Make Peace" and their work keeps getting better; "Etherall" is a hurricane break-based piece with fluttering pianos and dynamic breakaways that let Robert and his earnest, heart breaking lyrics shine through while "Always" shakes with more of a jazzy, cosmic energy where Manos's vocals provide just as much texture as they do soul. Timeless.

Review: Part of a series of releases on the legendary Basement, Shadow Cartel pay homage with a two part suite dedicated to the Blue Note school. Steppy, stark, spacious and icy, all attention is on the sub, moody atmosphere and minimal rhythmic elements working together. Pay attention: part two is where the drums perform magic tricks before your very ears.
