Cat: MM 008. Rel: 23 Jan 18
  1. In-D-Sky's (6:35)
  2. Rhythm (7:21)
  3. Freeze (6:57)
  4. The Beat Lab (7:31)
Review: Destination: Red Planet as Texan amen massacre maker MartianMan continues his impeccable jungle assault. "In-D-Sky's" is a really warped piece of paranoid jungle with its Beltram-style mentasm warping in-and-out of the mix with toxicity. "Rhythm" is all about the molten riff and jumpy dynamic while "Freeze" is all about the devilishly icy stabs and trippily pitched drums. "The Beat Lab" signs out with naked swinging drums and a groaning alien undertone that builds throughout. Mars needs bangers... And the only little green man around here will be you if miss out.

Sanity Check EP (double 12" (disc 1 white, disc 2 black) + MP3 download code)
Cat: CRIT 093. Rel: 04 Nov 16
  1. Mefjus & Emperor - "Sanity Check" (4:44)
  2. Mefjus & Emperor - "Flashizm" (3:24)
  3. Mefjus - "Dissuade" (Emperor remix) (8:46)
  4. Emperor - "SMPL" (Mefjus remix) (4:39)
Review: Two of the most rated men in D&B's next generation league, Emperor and Mefjus collaborations are always worth your time. Neither happy to conform to the rules established by peers, both relish in ending tracks with wry skits, both seriously on point with everything they've done in the last few years, naturally this follow up to their collaborative debut "Hello World" is just as firesome. All loaded with heavily sprung bass funk and oddball noises and designs that come in from nowhere, both originals are as original and distinctive as you'd want them to be. Comes complete with two long awaited versions; Emperor gullying the dickens out of "Dissuade" and Mefjus taking a hammer to "SMPL", rebuilding it in his own twisted way. Gloriously dark.

Contemporary EP (12" + MP3 download code)
Cat: CRIT 073. Rel: 11 Nov 13
  1. Mefjus & Icicle - "Contemporary"
  2. Mefjus - "Dissuade"
Review: Drum&BassArena award winning Austrian Mefjus proves his hype once again with two outrageously heavy cuts. "Contemporary" (a collaboration with the equally talented Icicle) has already become an early seasonal highlight, all sheet metal sound design and mind-bending dynamics. "Dissaude" is heavier again; tub-thumping drama with a cinematic sense of drama, it's contemporary neuro on a Phace & Misanthrop level. Something tells us more awards will find their way onto the Mefjus trophy cabinet in the near future.

ORTV 1 (12")
Cat: ORTV 1. Rel: 01 May 18
  1. Metro - "Vector Files" (6:50)
  2. Metro - "Plod" (4:58)
  3. Books - "Jagganath" (5:24)
  4. Cuelock - "4th System" (5:38)
Review: After a consistent slew of digital releases, Metro's Ortem goes the full vinyl monty with this cracking four-piece EP. Metro takes the A with two sublime, stripped back grooves. "Vector Files" pulsates with a technoid insistency while "Plod" flips a triplet around a heartbeat two-step. Flip for two Ortem regulars Books and Cuelock: the former gets trippy with the drum space and emotional with the pads while the latter casts a deep dubwise spell on us. What a great way to kick off a vinyl run.

Ram
Cat: RAMM 211. Rel: 23 Feb 16
  1. Rock 'N' Roll (4:41)
  2. Wildlife (4:22)
Review: Powerhouse Ram collab business as Anglo-Dutch duo June Miller play a mean head-butting game with Russian trio Teddy Killerz. "Rock 'N' Roll" has one of the best intros Ram have released in a while before dropping into a sweaty, moshy, air-guitar-snapping halftime groove. "Wildlife", meanwhile, is a sharp, steppy jump-up jam with staccato bass and a powerfully funky breakdown with big percussion and cinematic horns. A near-perfect example of collaboration science.

  1. Collapse (4:35)
  2. Fragment (3:25)
  3. Rotor (3:23)
  4. Attack (4:16)
Review: One of neuro's premier league producers Misanthrop makes his Ram debut with this face-melting four-tracker. Heavily politicised (the news is to blame for his angry sounds on all accounts), the German forecasts the gradual decline of humanity with rowdy distorted triplets on "Collapse". "Fragment" continues the spiral into Gomorrahic decay with the same sliding growl tone that's often used by Misanthrop and Phace's Neosignal project while "Rotor" reverses the technique so the tones spiral upwards to uplifting effect. Finally "Attack" closes the show with Misanthrop's grittiest slammer of the bunch. Who knew society's malfunctions would sound so good?

  1. Don't Wait (3:49)
  2. Cold Earth (4:20)
  3. Spiralled (3:58)
  4. Calgary (4:31)
Review: Since first appearing on Artificial Intelligence's Integral label in 2015, there's been much discussion about the possible identities of the "combination of producers" behind the Mohican Sun project. We can't shed any light on the matter, sadly, but we do know that the mystery combo's latest EP is another lesson in the melodious possibilities of deep and dreamy D&B. Check, for example, the loved-up breakdowns, chiming synthesizer melodies, swirling pads and floating vocal samples of liquid roller "Don't Wait", the crunchy beats and gentle piano flourishes of "Cold Earth" and the symphonic, soundscape D&B bliss of "Calgary". The EP also features something of a curveball in the shape of "Spiralled", which is a much more robust and full-throttle affair.

Review: What a trip it's been for young Monty in the last nine months. Since his debut on 1985 he's dropped slick and critically acclaimed EPs on Flexout and Vandal before returning to Alix Perez's imprint with a second round of stark, stripped back jams. "Hypnotise" is the eeriest creeper of the set while "Random Conduct" grizzles and grunts with a much darker undertone. Flip for the slinky, groaning "Sleepless" and the brimstone burning stepper "Magma". Hypnosis guaranteed.

Review: Pow! Right in the kisser: Federation X get busy on the remix front, drawing two classics from their eight year old vaults. First up, Spirit takes FDX's 002 release from Morphy and gives it a whole new coat of nuclear bomb proof armour. He says riot, he means riot. Handle with caution. X Nation isn't mucking around either as he keeps Skitty's original horns but builds a much meaner, machine funk beat around them. Savage.

  1. Shadow Boxing (Om Unit remix)
  2. Shadow Boxing (re-mastered original mix)
Review: Classic alert! Doc Scott revisits his NHS alias for this very special release on 31. The minute you hear that dark, groaning, ultimately evil, bassline you're whisked straight back in the smoky mists of 1996 - even if you were there at the time or not. Still dropped heavily by DJs to this day, this remastered revisit comes with a storming contemporisation from the on-point Om Unit. Identifying the creative potential between the bassline and his trademark halfsteps, it's one of the best D&B modernisations you'll hear all year.

  1. NC-17 & The Voss - "Scanners" (4:40)
  2. NC-17 & Saxxon - "King Of Bronx" (4:08)
  3. NC-17 - "Kubrickville" (5:15)
Review: This three-track assault boasts more dancefloor destroyers from the Weapons of Choice camp, this time via sharp-shooting twosome NC-17. On the A-side they're joined by like-minded battlefield lieutenant The Voss, who helps the duo turn "Scanners" into a fiendishly dark, fuzzy, stomping and weighty fusion of skittish D&B breakbeats, thrusting electronics and hushed vocal samples. Norfolk-based producer Saxxon lends a hand on B1 "King of Bronx", a punchy, hot-stepping workout full of mind-altering sub-bass, fizzing percussion fills and cut-up vocal samples. Finally, they pay tribute to Stanley Kubrick in the only way they know how on "Kubrickville", an all-out assault on the senses that's as dystopian as they come.

Power Relations (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ACOLOUR 002. Rel: 13 Jun 16
  1. Glass Fist (reprise)
  2. Heads & Ordinary Concrete
Review: Moopie's A Colourful Storm label launched earlier this year as an extension of the popular online platform that has hosted a rich and diverse stream of mixes from the likes of Imaginary Softwoods, DJ Nobu, Frak and Rabih Beaini to name a few. Pro-tip: do check that latter live mix from the Morphine boss! It was the archival sounds of Denial and their lost Oz classic cover of "California Dreaming" that heralded the arrival of A Colourful Storm, but this second release on the label switches the focus to more contemporary fare. Power Relations is a two track 12" of bad-mannered, f*cked up club trax from Melbourne's Nerve. The stomping, nocturnal techno of the title track is backed with a Photek-meets-Sunn O))) terror stepper entitled "Heads & Ordinary Concrete". For fans of Regis, Emptyset and Blackest Ever Black.

Review: Monstrously massive D&B! Netsky returns with a brand new label deal. While Ultra and Sony are now taking care of the Belgian's business, his old homestead Hospital are still taking care of the vinyl duties. And they've smashed it right here; complementing the hands-in-the-air original are killer rubs from Wookie (UK funky style drums with a garage sensibility and lush keys on the breakdown), Fred V & Grafix (breezy D&B dreams and sumptuous synths) and Todd Edwards (classic TE style harmonic choppery.. Every bit as funky as you'd expect!)

  1. Flow (4:30)

  4. Double Standards (5:01)
Review: Through These Eyes come through our ears and into our brains with maximum pleasure results. This time with Italian-in-London Noh Vae who builds on his sterling work with labels such as Modern Ruin and Terra Null with four more unidentifiable beats. "Flow" kicks in with halftime ghetto grit, all mentasms and loopy vocal punches, "Shaka" glides through space with a touch of the Skeppies to its icy off-beat groove while "Double Standards" takes us up to around 170 with a real low-slung purring Vromm-style sense of predator menace. Remix-wise Belgian dub don Digid rips up "Shaka" and rebuilds it on a smouldering 160 halftime beat. Noh Vae... No worries.

Review: They hit the limit... The limit hit back! Everything about this EP is awesome: firstly, the partnership of two of drum & bass's most on-point production teams. Secondly, "Mouthbreather" has been on all god-fearing neurofunkologist's wishlist for several years and it doesn't disappoint. Thirdly, "Dead Limit" one of the grizzliest, unruly tunes you'll hear all year. Fourthly, "Inverse" is the ultimate definition of elastic D&B funk. Fifthly, "Omnivore" contains some of the strangest, captivating sound design ever processed for the dance. Sixthly, the artwork is bang on point too. Trust us; this hits hard!

  1. Morning Light
  2. Grizzly
Review: Nu:Logic shouldn't need an introduction. The consolidated forces of brothers Logistics and Nu:Tone, it's double dynamite... And there's an album due very soon. To tease us Hospital has unleashed two completely contrasting licks, and they're both instantly alluring and expertly executed. "Morning Light" is a yearning roller with a chubby fretless bass and all manner of shivering pads and chords. "Grizzly" is the perfect foil; nodding at the current half-tempo work of TC and dipping into a few synth-horn trap palettes, it's a gritty, ass-shaking affair that screams endless hours of double drop potential. Essential.

Review: Ever the flexible soul-stirrer, Amsterdam's finest vibe merchant Nymfo returns to Spearhead with five of his most charming deep bubblers. "Crystal Clear" is a sunset anthem-in-waiting while "Time Zone" flips the coin with a deep subby rumbling rolling vibe. Elsewhere "In Transit" adds a little dubby mysticism to the EP while "Underwater Life" is a celebration all things dreamy, minimal and funky. Never sitting still creatively, Nymfo really is one of the best in the game right now. Salute!

Review: Om Unit returns after the summer's techno session on Idle Hands, hitting hard with his second "Torchlight" EP of the year. It's every bit as deep, diverse and experimental as you'd want it to be. And it features none other than Krust as the lavish 80s synths and dense layers of "Underground Cinema" ensure the EP's soul truly is in motion. "Fuzzd An Soup" retains a certain sense of classic jungle magic with its tight infectious hang drum patterns and textures. Finally "Lightbody Transfer" is the complete switch with its sedate, torpid kicks and underwater atmosphere. Immaculate.

Review: An interesting project on brand new experimentally-minded label AGN7: Ornette Hawkins is a mysterious collective acting as one on this jazz-fused wild drum work-out. Shades of Sun-Ra echo throughout the sax on the "Legend", 4Hero feels can be felt breezing through "Raw Sun" while "The Other Side Of What" a dancefloor kicker laced with a worming reese, talkbox scat and dizzy key whirls. Need a little b-boy swag? Look no further than Submorphics and T.R.A.C's hip-hop remix for a sweet treat finale. A genuinely unique release and a label to keep tabs on this year.

  1. Hunga (4:02)
  2. Hunga (Dead Man Chest Cosmic Grime remix) (5:49)
Review: Picking up the gauntlet from their inaugural release by Bodyjack & Special Request, the second release on the Dext Limited series comes from one of their staple artists: Bristolian producer Otik. He has had previous releases on the likes of Brotherhood Sound System, Tessier-Ashpool and Durkle Disco. It is a rowdy concoction of breaks and smack-to-the-jaw bass. Dead Man's Chest gives it a jungle touch on the Cosmic Grime remix . Alex Eveson (Ingredients/Western Lore) delivers another storming and breakneck rendition under the alias, with twitchy breakbeats, thick waves of bass and dark atmospherics. Essential stuff for all bass heads!
