  1. Break Glass (6:11)
  2. 600K (4:42)
  3. Obnox (4:49)
  4. Dissolve (6:52)
Review: Mark System's last outing on Exit, 2015's Final Approach LP, was almost universally praised for its pleasing fusion of bombastic, tech-step influenced bottom end and dreamy, ear-pleasing liquid D&B elements. The long-serving producer has taken a similar approach on this belated follow-up EP. While opener "Break Glass" is a little creepier than previous efforts - if no less punchy and bass-heavy - it retains System's instinctive grasp of the dynamics of light and shade. "600K" brilliantly joins the dots between classic jungle, modern tech-step and 8-bit games soundtracks, while "Obnox" dips crunchy beats in wild electronics to brilliant effect. Best of all, though, is closer "Dissolve", a superior deep space roller that sounds like it was recorded using some vintage electronic hardware.

  2. Rhythm (7:21)
  3. Freeze (6:57)
  4. The Beat Lab (7:31)
Review: Destination: Red Planet as Texan amen massacre maker MartianMan continues his impeccable jungle assault. "In-D-Sky's" is a really warped piece of paranoid jungle with its Beltram-style mentasm warping in-and-out of the mix with toxicity. "Rhythm" is all about the molten riff and jumpy dynamic while "Freeze" is all about the devilishly icy stabs and trippily pitched drums. "The Beat Lab" signs out with naked swinging drums and a groaning alien undertone that builds throughout. Mars needs bangers... And the only little green man around here will be you if miss out.

  1. My Wild Love (4:22)
  2. Let's Get Twisted (3:11)
Review: Not a lot is known about this Berlin-based project right now, besides rumours of a full album of originals later on this year. For now we have two awesome bootleg/edits... "My Wild Love" gives The Doors a smoky, mid 90s rolling D&B twist they've always deserved while "Twisted" takes Wayne G's heavily sexual spoken word hard house anthem from 1997 a Latin twist that no one could ever have predicted... And is about a trillion time better than the original. We need more of this.

  2. Mefjus & Emperor - "Flashizm" (3:24)
  3. Mefjus - "Dissuade" (Emperor remix) (8:46)
  4. Emperor - "SMPL" (Mefjus remix) (4:39)
Review: Two of the most rated men in D&B's next generation league, Emperor and Mefjus collaborations are always worth your time. Neither happy to conform to the rules established by peers, both relish in ending tracks with wry skits, both seriously on point with everything they've done in the last few years, naturally this follow up to their collaborative debut "Hello World" is just as firesome. All loaded with heavily sprung bass funk and oddball noises and designs that come in from nowhere, both originals are as original and distinctive as you'd want them to be. Comes complete with two long awaited versions; Emperor gullying the dickens out of "Dissuade" and Mefjus taking a hammer to "SMPL", rebuilding it in his own twisted way. Gloriously dark.

Contemporary EP (12" + MP3 download code)
Cat: CRIT 073. Rel: 11 Nov 13
  1. Mefjus & Icicle - "Contemporary"
  2. Mefjus - "Dissuade"
Review: Drum&BassArena award winning Austrian Mefjus proves his hype once again with two outrageously heavy cuts. "Contemporary" (a collaboration with the equally talented Icicle) has already become an early seasonal highlight, all sheet metal sound design and mind-bending dynamics. "Dissaude" is heavier again; tub-thumping drama with a cinematic sense of drama, it's contemporary neuro on a Phace & Misanthrop level. Something tells us more awards will find their way onto the Mefjus trophy cabinet in the near future.

  4. Cuelock - "4th System" (5:38)
Review: After a consistent slew of digital releases, Metro's Ortem goes the full vinyl monty with this cracking four-piece EP. Metro takes the A with two sublime, stripped back grooves. "Vector Files" pulsates with a technoid insistency while "Plod" flips a triplet around a heartbeat two-step. Flip for two Ortem regulars Books and Cuelock: the former gets trippy with the drum space and emotional with the pads while the latter casts a deep dubwise spell on us. What a great way to kick off a vinyl run.

  1. Rock 'N' Roll (4:41)
  2. Wildlife (4:22)
Review: Powerhouse Ram collab business as Anglo-Dutch duo June Miller play a mean head-butting game with Russian trio Teddy Killerz. "Rock 'N' Roll" has one of the best intros Ram have released in a while before dropping into a sweaty, moshy, air-guitar-snapping halftime groove. "Wildlife", meanwhile, is a sharp, steppy jump-up jam with staccato bass and a powerfully funky breakdown with big percussion and cinematic horns. A near-perfect example of collaboration science.

  4. Attack (4:16)
Review: One of neuro's premier league producers Misanthrop makes his Ram debut with this face-melting four-tracker. Heavily politicised (the news is to blame for his angry sounds on all accounts), the German forecasts the gradual decline of humanity with rowdy distorted triplets on "Collapse". "Fragment" continues the spiral into Gomorrahic decay with the same sliding growl tone that's often used by Misanthrop and Phace's Neosignal project while "Rotor" reverses the technique so the tones spiral upwards to uplifting effect. Finally "Attack" closes the show with Misanthrop's grittiest slammer of the bunch. Who knew society's malfunctions would sound so good?

  1. RunDos (5:12)
  2. Night Ride (5:33)
  3. The Duke (5:19)
  4. Tanaka (5:56)
Review: Under the mSdoS alias, Chris Kouzellis has released some fine material over the last seven or eight years. He's appeared on countless imprints in that time, so it's rather a surprise to find that "RunDOS" is the first time he's popped up on Tempo. The title track sets the tone, with the Greek producer peppering a crunchy, jungle-influenced drum track with lashings of tasty liquid style chords, melodies and piano flourishes. He takes a similar approach on the tougher and more outwardly energetic "Night Ride", where ghostly chords and booming bass help to create a suitably clandestine mood. Over on side B, he doffs a cap to Rephlex Records on the braindance/electro/D&B fusion of "The Duke", before unfurling a flute-laden liquid roller called "Tanaka". Tasty stuff all told.

Review: Having collaborated and set-up a label with Shogun bossman Friction under his Fine Art alias, it was only a matter of time before Bristol duo My Nu Leng flipped the favour and slapped down a little drum & bass in return. Their debut 170 cuts, "Portal", "Jigsaw" and "The Terrace" all smack with the type of muscle you'd hope - big riffs, gritty bass and a sense of drama that fits the current tech/jungle/halftime melting pot the genre is enjoying right now. For added measure they've also thrown in a unique groaning 130 wobbler that belongs in no other category but 'sick m8'. Powerful.

  1. Live Up (4:02)
  2. D&B Selecta (4:32)
Review: Firing reggae jungle vibes from the ever-reliable Rasta Vibes as Dutch toaster Mystic Pulse lays down vocal gold over a digidub switch-up. Sparking up with a synth-skank twist before dropping into a firing 170 rip-up, this is guaranteed to slap all floors into submission. Flip for "D&B Selecta". A homage to the deep-diggers with rapid femme fatale vocals, it's the type of track you can have a crowd singing along to before they even know it. Live it up.

  1. Shadow Boxing (Om Unit remix)
  2. Shadow Boxing (re-mastered original mix)
Review: Classic alert! Doc Scott revisits his NHS alias for this very special release on 31. The minute you hear that dark, groaning, ultimately evil, bassline you're whisked straight back in the smoky mists of 1996 - even if you were there at the time or not. Still dropped heavily by DJs to this day, this remastered revisit comes with a storming contemporisation from the on-point Om Unit. Identifying the creative potential between the bassline and his trademark halfsteps, it's one of the best D&B modernisations you'll hear all year.

  1. Yosei (6:35)
  2. Breakthrough (5:18)
Review: Coco Bryce's Diamond Life label has quickly established itself as a go-to source of music made in the style of early "jungle techno", as bass-heavy, breakbeat-powered dancefloor insanity was briefly known in the early 1990s. The latest producer to try and recapture the raw energy of that period is Jungle Rollerz regular Necrotype. The beard-sporting Brightonian begins in confident fashion with "Yosei", where spacey chords, futurist electronic riffs and pitched-up vocal samples rapidly rise above sweaty, snareheavy breaks and a booming bassline. The fun continues on flipside cut "Breakthrough", which contrasts heavy bottom-end bass and breakbeats with some deliciously loved-up pads and dreamy vocal samples.

Review: They hit the limit... The limit hit back! Everything about this EP is awesome: firstly, the partnership of two of drum & bass's most on-point production teams. Secondly, "Mouthbreather" has been on all god-fearing neurofunkologist's wishlist for several years and it doesn't disappoint. Thirdly, "Dead Limit" one of the grizzliest, unruly tunes you'll hear all year. Fourthly, "Inverse" is the ultimate definition of elastic D&B funk. Fifthly, "Omnivore" contains some of the strangest, captivating sound design ever processed for the dance. Sixthly, the artwork is bang on point too. Trust us; this hits hard!

Review: Om Unit's exceptional third album Self undergoes a series of reappraisals and reconstructions from an array of exciting talent. dBridge teases with a little autonomic charm and his own vocals on "What I Can Be", SKRS (Seekers International) get choppy and tropical with a swathing, murking twist on "Passages" while Sorrow takes Om Unit and Rider Shafique to touching introspective places in a barbed, evocative way that only he knows how. Finally Young Echo affiliates Neek and Jabu slide us into slow motion with the wonderfully sleepy "Tahatan". Less remixes and more brand new chapters; Cosmic Bridge never disappoint.

Review: An interesting project on brand new experimentally-minded label AGN7: Ornette Hawkins is a mysterious collective acting as one on this jazz-fused wild drum work-out. Shades of Sun-Ra echo throughout the sax on the "Legend", 4Hero feels can be felt breezing through "Raw Sun" while "The Other Side Of What" a dancefloor kicker laced with a worming reese, talkbox scat and dizzy key whirls. Need a little b-boy swag? Look no further than Submorphics and T.R.A.C's hip-hop remix for a sweet treat finale. A genuinely unique release and a label to keep tabs on this year.

Review: Following Overlook's EP on the label this spring, the young UK experimenter returns with a whole gang of Osiris affiliates. He takes the lead with the airy tribal soul of "Former Self" before we're hurled deep into the humanised pads and creeping arpeggios of Pessimist's swampy subs on "Indigo". Flip for two slices of Monic; first a physical percussive trip in the form of "Stampede", then a much more sedate, exploratory and introspective experiment with Grebenstein for a far out finale.

Review: Coming out of the Audio Plants fraternity, Ukranian drum & bass artist Pageant brings a bright and breezy musicality to the scene on this expansive debut album. The beats come through clear and punchy while the instrumentation takes its lead from LTJ Bukem's smoother moments to results in a very palatable kind of liquid drum & bass. This is as feel good as the genre can get, and with its wide scope for natural and synthetic sound sources it never tires on the ears. Whether it's the soaring vocal of Elena Aki on "Space Song" or the expressive guitar trills on "Taxi Driver", there's always something catchy to draw your ear in to Pageant's smooth as silk soundworld.
