Condenser (12")
Cat: SYMM 011. Rel: 15 May 12
  1. Break - "Condenser"
  2. Emperor - "Network"
Review: Drum & bass don Break comes through with the 11th release on his own Symmetry imprint, splitting duties with newcomer Emperor on the crucial double "A Condensor/Network". Calling shotgun, Break drops a perfect example of why he's so revered in the current climate when the epic "Condensor" is in full flow - few other producers out there possess the craft to make a track with such bewitching levels of detail to the drum textures and deviant strains of bass that snake forth with dark intent. Complementing this, "Network" has Emperor in expansive mood, darkside glitches disturbing the calm of a bristling soundscape and forcing the track into stilted progression, this new name on the scene demonstrating his talent for micro drum edits and low set bass lines.

  1. Break & Kyo - "Give In To Me" (5:18)
  2. Break - "Who Got Da Funk" (4:57)
Review: 10 years of Symmetry - 10 years of Break being an absolute boss. Respected by all sides of the game, his on-point balance of a funk and true grit has united us for over a decade and he's about to drop a brand new full-lengther of his own productions and remixes to celebrate. The two cuts showcase his range and skillish charm perfectly: "Give In To Me" features long-term collaborator Kyo who gives her most powerful soulful vocal over classic Break organs and a heavily swung beat. "Who Got Da Funk" is much sharper and grizzlier with its wasp nest bassline and punctuated two-step. Both prime us for the imminent album.

  3. Roygreen & Protone & Ben Soundscape - "Ruffneck" (5:39)
  4. Luch & Joakuim - "Lifespan" (5:41)
Review: Since 2003, the Intrigue crew has been providing Bristol clubbers with regular doses of liquid funk and musically expansive drum and bass, first at their regular parties and, since 2008, on their offshoot label. Predictably, there's much to enjoy on this celebratory 12". Old pal Break steps up first with a veritable warm summer breeze of a roller, "Mind's Eye" - all punchy, snare-heavy beats, acoustic guitars, rumbling bass and dreamy freestyle vocals - before Superior Selectionz and Ben Soundscape join forces for the slightly more weighty but no less attractive "Justa". Over on side B, Soundscape returns to action alongside Ryogreen and Protone on the wobble bass-propelled stepper "Ruffneck", while Lurch - a lesser-known stalwart of the Bristol scene - delivers some delicious, Afro-tinged liquid funk alongside Joakuim. Rock solid.

  1. Ric Flair Strut (4:33)
  2. Sanctuary (4:10)
Review: Boy oh boy has Breakage found his jungle groove again. Deep, playful, dark and everything in between, after years of experimenting in the electronic ether, he's returned to his cornerstone rolling signature with a vengeance. The brilliantly-titled "Ric Flair Strut" hits with pure swagger and a buzzy electrified bass that flickers up at the end of every eight. If it doesn't have you showing off your hairy chest and saying 'whoo' a lot, nothing will. Flip for the equally forthright "Sanctuary". Dubby funk with slapping drums and a breakdown that takes you right back into the rushing heart of rave ground zero, its venue namesake would be proud of this homage. On-point.

Review: Calibre on Digital's Function. Life doesn't get much better than this. The Belfast doyen has brought along his mate Jet Li for the ride and the results are every bit as golden as you'd expect. "Push Through It" is an immaculate string affair with that classic Signature poignancy while "Trees In The Wind" echoes with a marbled synth texture, sudden flickers of piano and yearning guitar twangs. A match made in soulful roller heaven.

Run Away (12")
Cat: SIG 020. Rel: 11 Sep 14
  1. Run Away
  2. Somethin Heavy
Review: Does drum and bass get any better than this? Two of the finest names in the genre club together for "Run Away", met in the middle by the man like Fox who puts his vocal stylings into the mix. Rolling out smooth, it's that lulling bassline and softly-spoken chorus that takes the edge off punchy drums and signature Intalex-style strings from the pad section. Fans have been waiting for a release on this for some time now - finally, it's ownable. Showing that they can still deliver tastier goods for the dancefloor, "Something Heavy" is a funk-fuelled hips-mover with Fox sending out his raggamuffin sounds over down and dirty bass. You've heard it in the dance, now get it on repeat.

  2. Ghostwriter (4:21)
Review: More premium D&B goodness from the decorated duo Calyx & TeeBee; "Where We Go" features the instantly charming vocals of Doctor (the name behind the vocals on Flux Pavilion's summer banger "International Anthem") and drops into a bassline so elastic it should come with safety goggles. Flip for the darker, uncompromised sounds of "Ghostwriter" where the duo throw two tonnes of broken glass into their bass mix for a firmer, arresting low end sensation... And a very cheeky old school breakdown. There's a reason these guys are so respected.

  3. Rise In Time (5:12)
  4. War Ina Babylon (4:29)
Review: The heavenly Sozialisticher return with more head-bending heroics. This time from longstanding experimenter, fringe-pusher Neil Gaeggeler under his Celsius guise. Brash, blunt and choppier than a night at sea with 100 lumberjacks, heavy pressure remains throughout as "This Rules" lives up to its name with ruded out badness, "Komplete Kontrol" blurs our vision with its deft energy, "Rise In Time" subverts a dreamy rave vocal and twists us inside out with turbine breaks while "War Ina Babylon" closes on a riotous ragga flex. Immense, intense; this makes sense.

  4. Weed Addict (5:07)
Review: It's been a long time between drinks for long-serving D&B producer Marcus Sills, who last appeared under the Channel 2 moniker back in 2015. Happily, the passing of time has not blunted his production skills. For proof, check the barnstorming ragga-jungle revivalism of thrilling opener "Boneman Connection" and similarly minded "Ragga Ragga". Elsewhere, he reaches for the guttural ragga vocals once more on the guitar-laden, hot-stepping, sub-heavy roll of "Weed Addict" and doffs a cap to the pioneers and deep drum and bass on the warm, evocative and dubwise "Wait", which includes cheeky samples from one of the best-loved reggae records of all time.

  1. Kawaii (5:23)
  2. Sideways (4:01)
  3. Rumours & Revelations (4:59)
  4. Ganymedes (5:33)
Review: Coco shunts it once again: the man like Bryce has been on a serious mission this year with a whole slew of steppers across the likes of 7th Storey and his own Myor Massiv. Here he steps over to Huddersfield-based Supercharger project Hypercharger with four crucial constructs. "Kawaii" lives up to its name with its cute hook and restrained sense of funk, "Sideways" makes up for this by smelting some of the nuttiest dynamics on the EP into a rampant brock-out while deeper again we hit the almost Good Lookingesque cascades and harmonies of "Rumours & Revelations". Finally "Ganymede" shoots us beyond the moons of Jupiter with a spaced-out staccato synth texture, roomy cut-up drums and an overall feeling that this might be a one way ticket. Safe travels!

Review: Last spotted on Second Hand Fun in 2016, young Montreal producer Comfort Zone returns with his first serious debut 12" and it's a beautiful game of two halves; Both versions of "Moonrocks" flex and wriggle with a hazy late 90s / early 2000s Freerangey / Jimpster type of dreaminess while all-out breakbeat jungle rollers "I Want U" and "Play This One In Toronto" show a whole other side to the young man. No time for sitting around and getting comfy on these ones...

  1. Future Perfect
  2. Soul Travel (with Dynamic)
Review: Fresh from outings on the hugely respected Goodlookin and Innerground imprints, Kazakhstan's strangest commander returns to Celsius with two deep, shiny rollers. "Future Perfect" wafts with breezy pads and an undulating funky bassline that bounds between the kicks. Wonderfully understated yet confidently heavy, it's an ideal balance of vibes wrapped up in a way only Command Strange knows how. "Soul Travel" is deep again; the pads and atmospherics are more subtle, allowing a more prominent bassline to ooze out of the blend. Gradually an array of musical elements creep back into the mix, building into something that works just as well on headphones as it does on the dancefloor. Just as the title says... Perfect.

Review: Fresh from a fine outing on Bahnsteig23 under the alternative Cassiard DJ alias, Thomas Cassiard dons the C.R.K alias for an expansive outing on Comic Sans. There's a surprisingly symphonic feel to opener "Sad React Only Plz", which flits from a deep space ambient number to a shuffling IDM wriggler midway through, but there's more forthright fare to be found elsewhere across the EP. Check, for example, the off-kilter drums and sparkling melodies of "100g De Balls" and the intergalactic jungle-techno revivalism of "Plus Loin Que La Police". Arguably the EP's greatest moment, though, is closer "Les Etoiles Sont Plus Hautes Que La Ciel", where elongated chords, bubbly beats and tumbling melodies combine to create a poignant and melancholic mood.

With upwards of a year passing between dispatches (and epic five-year hype times between ID clips of Ram boss Andy C playing them and them actually being finished and released) fans have learned to make hay while the sun shines. Like now... Originally released digitally in December, these four tracks are finally available on vinyl and every one of them is a thriller: from the Detroitian textures of the synths on "Tangents" to the all-out bull charge of "Steam Machine" and the vocal beauty of "No More", Shocky's sun is shining brightly right now. 4. Peter's Pals-R-Ace (5:08)
Review: Man of many aliases Kenny Pitman (AKA Kid Lib and Dub & Wheel) impressed us when he first donned the Peter Darker pseudonym late last year for a fine outing on 7th Storey Projects. Happily, the Sheffield jungle revivalist is in equally fine form on this fantastic follow-up. He kicks things off via the intricately-edited madness of "Soul Caliber", where 8-bit video game noises surge above Amen Andrews style, heavily chopped-up jungle breaks, before reaching for the sub-bass on the more rolling, hardcore-era "jungle techno" flex of "Destiny (Peter's Choice)". The fun continues on the flipside, where both "Nights R Darker" and "Peter's Pals R-Ace" offer pulsating, energy-packed romps through Pitman's brilliantly observed, retro-jungle universe.

Review: From the makers of "Gambino" comes "Bambino". A true roller coaster of a track with all its twists and turns, it's every bit as electrifying and densely textured as you'd expect from one of Ram's most heavyweight duos. For something a little on the leftside flip for the tripped out triplet rhythm with its downpitched vocals and strange synth flurries. The two sides of DC Breaks showcased in true style; it's yet another straight-to-dancefloor classic.

Review: With bandwagon-jumping producers continuing to gravitate towards jungle revivalism like flies to an open bin bag, Ingredients Records has decided to reissue a slew of vintage productions from 21st century jungle maestro Alex Eveson, better known as Dead Man's Chest. Nautilus originally appeared in stores in 2015, but remains one of the producer's punchiest and most potent EPs. For proof, check the fluttering ambient chords, gasping vocal samples and head-in-the-clouds riddims of "Liquid '94", the saucer-eyed, jumping-around-in-a-muddy-field madness of "Cut-Throat Hardcore" and the fuzzy punch of loved-up jungle roller "The Future".

  1. King Of The Bongo
  2. Stickybuds Guaranteed
Review: Breakbeat warriors Deekline and Ed Solo team up again, and this time they've gone for it. Not content with producing some of the nastiest, wobbliest breakbeat around, they've decided to turn their hand to drum & bass and another release on Jungle Cakes. Lead cut "King Of The Bongo" is a cheeky exercise in bootleg jump-up buffoonery - the sort of tune that boasts a grin a mile wide and a happy dancefloor to match. Flip "Stickybuds Guaranteed" opts for a slightly more old skool jungle approach, mashing up skankin' MC and familiar pop vocals. It goes without saying that both tunes feature stupidly heavy basslines.

Four of the 14 tracks, pressed to double 12", it's a sizzling synapse-snapping screenshot of where Ben and Si are at: feather-ruffling electrified bass, spatterings of rifle guitar blasts and beats so strong they could melt concrete. Climaxing with the hands-in-the-air vocal slap-down "City Of Dreams", each of these four cuts are primed for the peakest of peak hours. Delta Heaven.
