Sagan VIP (12")
Cat: NARRATIVES 001R. Rel: 11 Oct 16
  1. Sagan VIP (5:46)
  2. Broken (Paradox remix) (6:50)
Review: Blocks and Escher's Narratives Music label has been building a fearsome reputation over the last few years, in part due to the duo's willingness to embrace the experimental end of D&B, whilst retaining a clear dancefloor focus. This 12" sees them delve into their archives, offering up previously unheard versions of the two tracks that made up the label's debut release way back in 2012. First up is the moody and deliciously atmospheric "Sagan VIP", where cinematic textures and alien electronics rub shoulders with off-kilter, post-jungle rhythms and throbbing sub-bass. On the flip, Reinforced Records veteran Paradox gives "Broken" the once over, brilliantly melding bombastic old school jungle rhythms with fluid chords and darting synthesizer melody lines.

  1. Dub Fi Dub (4:44)
  2. Teefa (5:49)
  3. Cold Rushing (6:44)
  4. Ruff (5:27)
Review: Aside from being a killer producer of retro-futurist hardcore and revivalist jungle, Borai also happens to be Bristol's most dapper man (few others can rock a vintage 1980s McLaren formula one leather jacket with the same panache). Here he returns to London label Them with a quartet of suitably heavyweight dancefloor workouts. The producer's love of rave-era tape pack vocal samples resurfaces on the bustling, sub-heavy madness of 14- BPM jungle A-side cuts "Dub Fi Dub" and the fizzing "Teefa". On the flip, the sometime Hotline Recordings artist changes tack, first serving up a throbbing chunk of acid techno insanity before diving headfirst into weighty but party-starting dubstep pastures on killer closer "Ruff".

Condenser (12")
Cat: SYMM 011. Rel: 15 May 12
  1. Break - "Condenser"
  2. Emperor - "Network"
Review: Drum & bass don Break comes through with the 11th release on his own Symmetry imprint, splitting duties with newcomer Emperor on the crucial double "A Condensor/Network". Calling shotgun, Break drops a perfect example of why he's so revered in the current climate when the epic "Condensor" is in full flow - few other producers out there possess the craft to make a track with such bewitching levels of detail to the drum textures and deviant strains of bass that snake forth with dark intent. Complementing this, "Network" has Emperor in expansive mood, darkside glitches disturbing the calm of a bristling soundscape and forcing the track into stilted progression, this new name on the scene demonstrating his talent for micro drum edits and low set bass lines.

  1. Break & Kyo - "Give In To Me" (5:18)
  2. Break - "Who Got Da Funk" (4:57)
Review: 10 years of Symmetry - 10 years of Break being an absolute boss. Respected by all sides of the game, his on-point balance of a funk and true grit has united us for over a decade and he's about to drop a brand new full-lengther of his own productions and remixes to celebrate. The two cuts showcase his range and skillish charm perfectly: "Give In To Me" features long-term collaborator Kyo who gives her most powerful soulful vocal over classic Break organs and a heavily swung beat. "Who Got Da Funk" is much sharper and grizzlier with its wasp nest bassline and punctuated two-step. Both prime us for the imminent album.

  3. Roygreen & Protone & Ben Soundscape - "Ruffneck" (5:39)
  4. Luch & Joakuim - "Lifespan" (5:41)
Review: Since 2003, the Intrigue crew has been providing Bristol clubbers with regular doses of liquid funk and musically expansive drum and bass, first at their regular parties and, since 2008, on their offshoot label. Predictably, there's much to enjoy on this celebratory 12". Old pal Break steps up first with a veritable warm summer breeze of a roller, "Mind's Eye" - all punchy, snare-heavy beats, acoustic guitars, rumbling bass and dreamy freestyle vocals - before Superior Selectionz and Ben Soundscape join forces for the slightly more weighty but no less attractive "Justa". Over on side B, Soundscape returns to action alongside Ryogreen and Protone on the wobble bass-propelled stepper "Ruffneck", while Lurch - a lesser-known stalwart of the Bristol scene - delivers some delicious, Afro-tinged liquid funk alongside Joakuim. Rock solid.

Swinging Flavors #7 (turquoise vinyl 7")
Cat: BMRSF 007. Rel: 11 Sep 18
  1. Damn Hot (4:31)
  2. Damn Hot (Danny Scrilla remix) (4:52)
Review: The seventh volume in Beat Machine's ongoing "Swinging Flavors" series of singles arrives on vibrant turquoise vinyl. This time round, it's a relatively new artist at the controls: Breaka, whose debut 12" on Holding Hands tickled our fancy earlier in the year. Happily, "Damn Hot" lives up to its title, brilliantly joining the dots between the snappy drum machine snares, cut up vocal samples and incessant hustle of Chicago Juke, the crunchy breakbeat since of old school jungle, and the futurist intent of contemporary drum and bass. It's really rather good, all told, with Danny Scrilla's flipside remix - a spacey fusion of intergalactic synthesizer melodies and ruffneck early '90s jungle tropes - also hitting the sweet spot.

  1. Ric Flair Strut (4:33)
  2. Sanctuary (4:10)
Review: Boy oh boy has Breakage found his jungle groove again. Deep, playful, dark and everything in between, after years of experimenting in the electronic ether, he's returned to his cornerstone rolling signature with a vengeance. The brilliantly-titled "Ric Flair Strut" hits with pure swagger and a buzzy electrified bass that flickers up at the end of every eight. If it doesn't have you showing off your hairy chest and saying 'whoo' a lot, nothing will. Flip for the equally forthright "Sanctuary". Dubby funk with slapping drums and a breakdown that takes you right back into the rushing heart of rave ground zero, its venue namesake would be proud of this homage. On-point.

  4. Believe It (5:55)
Review: One of the most prolific and consistent men in drum & bass, Calibre returns to Total Science's CIA with a quartet of golden rollers: "Another" hums with silky subs and perfectly positioned vocal echoes, "Posh Boy" reminds us of Calibre's darker underbelly as alien bass tears squiggle and sneer over crisp two-steps, "Dreamz Dub" opens up with beautiful strings and distant horns before switching into an immense classic jungle retrospective while "Believe It" closes the show with another simple vocal sample that wraps itself around his lean skippy beats. Perfect.

Review: Calibre on Digital's Function. Life doesn't get much better than this. The Belfast doyen has brought along his mate Jet Li for the ride and the results are every bit as golden as you'd expect. "Push Through It" is an immaculate string affair with that classic Signature poignancy while "Trees In The Wind" echoes with a marbled synth texture, sudden flickers of piano and yearning guitar twangs. A match made in soulful roller heaven.

Run Away (12")
Cat: SIG 020. Rel: 11 Sep 14
  1. Run Away
  2. Somethin Heavy
Review: Does drum and bass get any better than this? Two of the finest names in the genre club together for "Run Away", met in the middle by the man like Fox who puts his vocal stylings into the mix. Rolling out smooth, it's that lulling bassline and softly-spoken chorus that takes the edge off punchy drums and signature Intalex-style strings from the pad section. Fans have been waiting for a release on this for some time now - finally, it's ownable. Showing that they can still deliver tastier goods for the dancefloor, "Something Heavy" is a funk-fuelled hips-mover with Fox sending out his raggamuffin sounds over down and dirty bass. You've heard it in the dance, now get it on repeat.

  1. Where We Go (feat Doctor) (4:24)
  2. Ghostwriter (4:21)
Review: More premium D&B goodness from the decorated duo Calyx & TeeBee; "Where We Go" features the instantly charming vocals of Doctor (the name behind the vocals on Flux Pavilion's summer banger "International Anthem") and drops into a bassline so elastic it should come with safety goggles. Flip for the darker, uncompromised sounds of "Ghostwriter" where the duo throw two tonnes of broken glass into their bass mix for a firmer, arresting low end sensation... And a very cheeky old school breakdown. There's a reason these guys are so respected.

Familiar Circles Remix EP (hand-stamped 12" in hand-stamped sleeve)
Cat: WOLFLP 003RMX. Rel: 08 Mar 17
  1. Carlotta (Al Zanders remix) (8:01)
  2. Oddity (Moomin remix) (6:20)
Review: The latest release from the reliable Wolf Music camp is a limited edition, hand-stamped affair, and features two previously unheard remixes of tracks from Casino Times' Familiar Circles full-length. On the A-side, Al Zanders does a stellar job reworking "Carlotta", in the process laying down a hypnotic, percussion rich deep house shuffler full of bright cowbell hits, sunset-friendly jazz guitar licks and bubbly electronic melodies. On the flip you'll find a more than pleasant surprise: a deep, dreamy and utterly beguiling drum & bass remix of "Oddity" from Smallville regular Moomin. Its expert combination of evocative musical elements and crispy, snare-driven D&B rhythms is reminiscent of the golden age of Bukem-style liquid D&B.

  2. Sideways (4:01)
  3. Rumours & Revelations (4:59)
  4. Ganymedes (5:33)
Review: Coco shunts it once again: the man like Bryce has been on a serious mission this year with a whole slew of steppers across the likes of 7th Storey and his own Myor Massiv. Here he steps over to Huddersfield-based Supercharger project Hypercharger with four crucial constructs. "Kawaii" lives up to its name with its cute hook and restrained sense of funk, "Sideways" makes up for this by smelting some of the nuttiest dynamics on the EP into a rampant brock-out while deeper again we hit the almost Good Lookingesque cascades and harmonies of "Rumours & Revelations". Finally "Ganymede" shoots us beyond the moons of Jupiter with a spaced-out staccato synth texture, roomy cut-up drums and an overall feeling that this might be a one way ticket. Safe travels!

Review: Last spotted on Second Hand Fun in 2016, young Montreal producer Comfort Zone returns with his first serious debut 12" and it's a beautiful game of two halves; Both versions of "Moonrocks" flex and wriggle with a hazy late 90s / early 2000s Freerangey / Jimpster type of dreaminess while all-out breakbeat jungle rollers "I Want U" and "Play This One In Toronto" show a whole other side to the young man. No time for sitting around and getting comfy on these ones...

  1. Future Perfect
  2. Soul Travel (with Dynamic)
Review: Fresh from outings on the hugely respected Goodlookin and Innerground imprints, Kazakhstan's strangest commander returns to Celsius with two deep, shiny rollers. "Future Perfect" wafts with breezy pads and an undulating funky bassline that bounds between the kicks. Wonderfully understated yet confidently heavy, it's an ideal balance of vibes wrapped up in a way only Command Strange knows how. "Soul Travel" is deep again; the pads and atmospherics are more subtle, allowing a more prominent bassline to ooze out of the blend. Gradually an array of musical elements creep back into the mix, building into something that works just as well on headphones as it does on the dancefloor. Just as the title says... Perfect.

Review: Aussie breaksmith oft spotted lurking under the alias Sean Thomas or T McAlister, Cop Envy brings the broken heat to Cry Baby for the label's second release. Two sides, two stories; "Balanced" is a woozy aquatic halftime affair with big blunderbuss drums and rich abyssal textures while "Leisure" brings the tempo down for a groove that digs right into the genus of the hardcore continuum. Rolling, iced but not without its machine funk warmth. Nothing to cry about here at all...

Review: Fresh from a fine outing on Bahnsteig23 under the alternative Cassiard DJ alias, Thomas Cassiard dons the C.R.K alias for an expansive outing on Comic Sans. There's a surprisingly symphonic feel to opener "Sad React Only Plz", which flits from a deep space ambient number to a shuffling IDM wriggler midway through, but there's more forthright fare to be found elsewhere across the EP. Check, for example, the off-kilter drums and sparkling melodies of "100g De Balls" and the intergalactic jungle-techno revivalism of "Plus Loin Que La Police". Arguably the EP's greatest moment, though, is closer "Les Etoiles Sont Plus Hautes Que La Ciel", where elongated chords, bubbly beats and tumbling melodies combine to create a poignant and melancholic mood.

Like now... Originally released digitally in December, these four tracks are finally available on vinyl and every one of them is a thriller: from the Detroitian textures of the synths on "Tangents" to the all-out bull charge of "Steam Machine" and the vocal beauty of "No More", Shocky's sun is shining brightly right now. The touching depths of Culture Shock's long-awaited "Piano Dark", the Noisia-level antics of Audio on his June Miller, InsideInfo's deep throat bass on "The Truth" and the add bass fluctuations on Rene's VIP. 200 singles deep and still killing it, Ram have put together a serious package here.
