Review: Ed Keeley seems to have dropped the "DJ" bit from his Friction moniker, but he remains one of the most in-demand selectors on the drum and bass scene. Having released his first mix CD way back in 2000, he's something of a veteran. That makes it doubly surprising that this is his first contribution to the FabricLive series. Predictably, it's a bit of a whirlwind 70-minutes, with Friction constantly entertaining by restlessly chopping between snare-heavy rollers (Nymfo, Insideinfo & Mefjus), twinkling carnival jams (Technimatic's sparkling old skool tribute to the West Country, "Bristol"), deeper flavours (Alix Perez, the wide-eyed rush of AI's "You Can Dream"), jaunty liquid funk (Chords, a tasty Calibre remix of two) and techier beats (Icicle, Ulterior Motive & Judda).

Review: It would be fair to say that excitement has been building since Goldie announced the release of The Journey Man earlier this year. You see, the expansive, triple-vinyl full-length is the Metalheadz man's first album since 1998's patchy Saturnz Return, and is being trumpeted by those who've heard it in full as a triumphant return to form. It naturally features some sweeping, classical instrumentation, but there's nothing as self indulgent as the hour-long "Mother". Furthermore, Goldie has wisely delivered a set of high quality drum and bass that ticks numerous boxes - dancefloor darkness, jungle revivalism, liquid funk warmth - with a string of suitably impressive collaborators (Ulterior Motive, Swindle, Jose James, Natalie Williams, Terri Walker) swinging by to ensure the set oozes soul.

Review: Over the last decade, Hallucinator has carved its own niche in the world of dark D&B, developing a style they call "drill 'n' thrill". Fuzzy, forthright, intense and aggressive, with mutant industrial motifs and thrusting, guitar style riffs wrapped around rip-snorting rhythms, it could arguably be described as the drum and bass version of extreme metal. Certainly, this sophomore album is a deliciously full-throttle affair, with the experienced Italian duo refusing to compromise. The result is a thrill-a-minute set stacked to the rafters with punchy club cuts, raging future anthems and twisted, dark-style madness.

Review: Hospital Records has done their best to nurture the talents of Oxford-born, Bristol-based producer Hugh Hardie. They began showcasing occasional tracks on compilations back in 2014, eventually releasing his fine debut EP, City Soul, last summer. This "softly, softly" approach seems to have paid off, because Colourspace, his first full-length excursion, is really rather impressive. Soulful, melodious and deliciously summery, it sees Hardie joining the dots between punchy old school jungle, classic liquid D&B, vintage High Contrast, Hospital label mates S.P.Y and, on the wonderful "Shades of Blue", the kind of experimental but attractive D&B/post dubstep fusion that's previously been a hallmark of Exit Recordings.

Review: On his first album since parting company with Hospital Records, Lincoln Barrett has decided to do things differently. Inspired by a mixture of co-producing Underworld's last album and nostalgia for the music of his youth, Night Gallery sees him expand his musical repertoire in impressive style. So, while his famed melody-rich, festival-friendly drum and bass workouts are still present, they're accompanied by tracks that variously touch on Daft Punk style disco ("The Beat Don't Feel The Same"), punk-rock ("Shotgun Mouthwash"), string-laden progressive house ("Ambient Recovery"), Balearic-minded breakbeat-pop ("Save Somebody") and euphoric indie-rock ("Come Together"). It's a bold move, but one that should be applauded; after all, the album hangs together just as well as any of his previous sets.

Review: Three years in the making; 7th Storey proudly present the stark, twisted foundation-setting work of Mark Loy under his Jungle Buddha guise. Originally released in 1993 on Poetic Justice, the originals have been excavated from DAT, mastered, restored and cut back to wax in all their OG jungle tekno glory. Chaotic, rough, ready and riddled with prang aesthetics to make an army of rudeboys run for miles, this is still sounding decades ahead of where we are right now. A serious artefact.

Review: The moment the quintessential rave synths, rolling breaks and cooing female vocals on album opener "North Winds" hit you, you know Krakota's put together something special. Coming on strong like a young Logistics but with his own soul-flecked signature, Krakota has weight, a strong sense of history and scope. The footwork beats and New York sounding synths on "Turn Of Fate", the big band flourishes of "Powder Coated", the writhing jazz snakery of "Elastic" the horror movie spikes and MC venom of "Weirdos & Creepers". Pick a track, any track, and we guarantee Krakota's smashed it. Hospital don't mess around with artist albums... Here's a perfect reminder why.

Review: Young Dutch firebrand Maduk continues to scorch the D&B landscape with his first full length body of work. Showcasing his full spectrum, we stretch from barbed-soul, heads-down rollers such as "One Way" to the poppier, song-based hand-raisers such "The End" and the pumping filtered funk of the title track by way of off-tempo sideswipers such as the 150 breakbeat cut "One Last Picture". A highly accomplished album: As the entire scene watches his every move, the Liquicity champion continues to make all the right moves.

Review: When it comes to making soulful drum and bass and liquid funk, few are quite as good as Japanese D&B legend Makoto Shimizu. Given his status and track record, it's little surprise to find him finally popping up on Hospital Records - a label that seems a natural home for his particular brand of shimmering, summery breakbeat science. Salvation is his sixth solo studio album, and may well be his strongest to date. Packaged with guest appearances from a variety of like-minded producers and honey-throated vocalists - think DRS, Pete Simpson and Karina Ramage - the 14-track set is little less than a kaleidoscopic romp through soaring D&B, piano-laden liquid rollers, soul-soaked jungle and spacey, jazz-flecked dancefloor escapades.

Review: German jungle subversion: Martin Heinze delivers his debut album Kerner and it's every bit as beguiling, unique and forward-thinking as his back catalogue on the likes of Med School, Commercial Suicide and Warm Comms foretold. Back on Hidden Hawaii for the first time in years, Kerner is his most explorative and wide-ranging piece of work to date: the minimal techno ricochet of "Kickoff", the industrial whirlwind breaks of "Krine", the ever-distorting elastic bassline venom of "Gryphe", the echo chamber cosmosis and reverse-warping of "Human Error", the playful steps and trippy dribbles of "Shades", the suspense and release of the tribal pounder "Impending" and the cathedral-like chimes and reverbs of the far-out finale "Maxicle"... Seven examples of genuine 170 innovation.

Review: Since gate crashing the drum and bass party back in 2009, Mefjus (AKA Austrian producer Martin Schober) has consistently delivered high quality material for a range of labels, most notably Critical Recordings. This time out he's operating on Vision Recordings, offering up a second album, some four years on from releasing his well-received debut full-length. After opening with the foreboding, scene-setting cyber-ambient of "Manifest", the long-serving DJ/prodiucer proceeds to lay down a rip-snorting selection of peak-time D&B cuts marked out by dark and throbbing neruofunk style wobble basslines, clandestine textures, creepy orchestration and punchy, occasionally rolling breakbeats that occasionally tend towards the old school. There are also occasional blasts of experimental D&B - see "Ringshifter" and the stabbing "Work It" - and hard-to-define bass music fusions containing notably weighty low-end motifs.

  29. Mefjus & Emperor - "Sanity Check"
Review: Fabric has described Mefjus's contribution to their FabricLive mix series as a "hybrid artist and DJ mix album". That's because the Austrian D&B starlet has taken the bold step to pack the 29-track set with his productions and remixes. In fact, every single thing featured on the thrill-a-minute CD is his work, even the previously unreleased "VIP" versions of tracks by the neurofunk heavyweight's peers. It's a blueprint that guarantees success. While there's plenty of subtle variety and occasional changes in direction, the set is propelled forwards at a furious lick by the Austrian's passion for fuzzy, mind-altering basslines, Blade Runner-style soundscapes, punchy rhythms and fizzing electronics. As a result, the 80-minute mix seems to pass by at the blink of an eye.

Review: It's been a big year for Hospital. Shucks, every year is a big year for London Elektricity's imprint, but 2014 seems especially big with huge albums from the likes of Fred V & Grafix, S.P.Y and now Metrik. Repping his game, the label and the genre at the highest level, Universal Language is a highly accomplished calling card for Metrik that showcases his ability to create barn-storming rave homages ("Make The Floor Burn"), arena-slapping sing-along lighter-raisers ("Human Again", "Infinity"), techy underground rollers ("Slipstream") and unifying cuts that give the legendary Underworld a run for their money ("Resonate"). Maintaining a fine balance of great songwriting, muscular production and straight-up dancefloor abandon, this speaks to every corner, every sub genre and every tiny pocket of D&B. Just as the title suggests.

Review: Given that Misanthrop has been active in the experimental D&B scene since the dawn of the millennium, it's rather surprising to find that Misanthrop is his debut solo album. Built around distorted electronics, industrial tropes, throbbing basslines and redlined rhythms, it's exactly the kind of set you'd expect from the Stuttgart native. Highlights come thick and fast, from the creepy, new wave and Kraftwerk influenced shuffle of "Notbot" and off-kilter, IDM madness of "The Funk" - like Autechre jamming with dBridge - to the unbridled aggression of "Rosebud" and atmospheric, string-drenched builds and throbbing electro-jungle rhythms of closer "Heavy Load".

Review: Under the Naibu alias, Robin Leclair has already released a quintet of quality albums packed with atmospheric, soul-flecked drum and bass treats. Album number six, "Manoeuvres", delivers more of the same but that's not criticism, because few producers in the scene are quite as capable of crafting such yearning, softly-spun delights as "Oblivion", "Passage" and "Achille", a track whose combination of punchy drums, drifting pads, meandering melodies and soulful flourishes borders on breathtaking. He also tries his hand at deep space ambient with impressive results (see "Float") while vocal number "Just Let It" is a punchy, UKG-influenced chunk of life-affirming goodness.

  11. Klein - "Arrange" (3:46)
Review: When he was asked to put together the fourth volume in Dekmantel's brilliant Selectors series, Joy Orbison decided to use the opportunity to pay tribute to the rich history of UK dance music. Predictably, his on-point selections join the dots between the past and the present, moving from the London beat poetry of James Messiah and hard-to-find 1991 UK hardcore of R Solution's surprisingly deep and melodious "Skinny Long Git", to the crunchy, mad-as-a-box-of-frogs IDM of JP Buckle's 1998, Rephlex-released oddity "One For Da Laydeez". Along the way, he finds space for the sparkling early D&B of "Lush" by Oblivion (AKA Source Direct), the low-slung, bass-heavy deep house/acid house fusion of L.E Bass and the analogue techyno idealism of Beatrice Dillon.

Review: Remarkably, it's been seven years since the last full-length excursion from festival-friendly drum and bass megaliths Pendulum. Fans will no doubt be thrilled that they've finally broken cover, albeit with an album that sees a wide range of producers put their spin on highlights from the band's back catalogue. As you'd expect, there are some notably big D&B revisions on show - check Noisia's rip-snorting but also surprisingly radio-friendly rework of "Hold Your Color" - but also plenty of remixes that take the band's signature sound in new directions. Skrillex surprises with a jaunty, toned-down hybrid dubstep/reggae-pop take on "The Island (Part 1)", Knife Party turns "Blood Sugar" into a synth-heavy electrofunk sing-along and Icarus re-invents classic "Tarantula" as a bright and breezy deep house roller.

Review: Lo and behold, it's Phace's third solo album and it's sounding like his best LP to date. Powerfully punchy and high impact as it's compacted into a 30 minute hurricane, each cut is a glitchy zip from trip to trip; the wily vocal drop outs on "Downgrade", the sweary speaker kicking "FMS", the wonderfully whimsical "Lazy Day" and the near cosmic synths, gurgling bass and fizzy slapbass on "Obscure" are just some of the highlights that ping and ricochet you around Phace's multi layered, multi faceted, multi dimensional album. Breath takingly accomplished.

Review: After a summer of hype and teasing, liquid golden boys Pola & Bryson finally unveil their highly anticipated sophomore set for Shogun and it's every bit as graceful, varied and on point as we'd hoped. Ranging from the tender piano touches and soft but urgent vocal of "24/7" to the starlit rush crusade that is "Stratford Riddim" to the soft focus soul feels of "Alkaline", it's once again another exercise in class, restraint and groove science from the unstoppable duo. An exceptional album.

Review: Some seven years on from their last album, Invaders Must Die, The Prodigy returns, seemingly as angry, frustrated and overheated as ever. The Day Is My Enemy sees Liam Howlett and his band of merry men revisit the glory days of Fat Of The Land, smashing together a typically in-your-face blend of rugged electronics, rock-tinged riffs and bombastic beats (including, on "Rebel Radio", what appears to be the breakbeat used on "Firestarter"), with similarly full-throttle vocals. There are a couple of notable guest spots - including men-of-the-moment Sleaford Mods on the standout "Ibiza" - but for the most part it's business as usual, with Howlett conjuring up music that should keep their legion of fans happy whilst reasserting their authority as world leaders in rock-tinged EDM.
