  1. Power Of Darkness (5:50)
  2. Diatonic (5:21)
  3. Power Of Daylight (5:45)
Review: 1993 business: Simon Bassline Smith's Smith Inc alias was a vital name in the dark hardcore crossover era with his Absolute 2 label and seminal cuts such as "Palomino". He was packing plenty dubplates which never saw the light of day. These are but three; "Power Of Darkness" is a brutal and daring piece of music that would have cleared floors for weeks before the crowd got their heads around it (thanks to DJs like Grooverider persisting with it) in contrast "Power Of Daylight" is brisk and breezy hardcore with skin rippling pads and some absolutely superb break rolling on the build that could play for days you'd remain locked in. Complete with the rolling thumps and glitches of "Diatonic", this EP gives you three reasons why Smith has remained valid and relevant for almost 30 years.

  1. Soligen & Type 2 - "Can't Go" (Break remix) (6:17)
  2. Impish - "So Sick" (5:23)
Review: The ever-dependable Fokuz welcome Break to the fray for a killer remix of last year's soul-burner from Soligen & Type 2. Adding a touch of grit and a brand new drumsuit, it's yet another killer strike for all concerned. Speaking of drums, Impish's "So Sick" is a proper jungle mission that's powered by serious live drumsounds. All splashy cymbals and one-inch-punch kicks, it's coated with a hornet bassline and pads so old school their Moschinos still have the tags on.

U Got Me (clear vinyl 12" + poster + MP3 download code)
Cat: TEMPO 1213. Rel: 06 Dec 18
  1. U Got Me (5:37)
  2. Loved Up (6:24)
  3. No Hype (4:49)
  4. Feel Good (5:38)
Review: Long-serving label hopper Soul Intent (real name Alex Judd) returns to Dutch imprint Tempo for the 2nd time in two years. The experienced producer offers up a blend of bass-weight dancefloor pressure and soul-fired musical intent. There's something particularly special about opener "U Got Me", a Loleatta Holloway-sampling beast built around jazzy, off-kilter D&B drums, pulsating sub bass and crystalline musical touches, though sun-kissed roller "Loved Up" - a slightly punchier but no less bass-heavy affair - is almost as good. Also worth a listen is "No Hype", whose combination of punishing, hot-stepping drums and gargantuan sub-bass is particularly potent.

Give Me A Dub (140g clear vinyl 12" + insert)
Cat: TEMPO 1208. Rel: 23 Mar 16
  1. Give Me A Dub (6:50)
  2. The Dread (4:51)
  3. Heaven (feat E) (4:28)
Review: Some fierce drum 'n' bass from the darkside that deconstructs and reconstructs jungle era breakbeat science on the Give Me A Dub EP by Nottingham's (now London based) Soul Intent on Tempo. Appearing for a change outside of his usual home, Lossless Records, he throws down three killer tracks here. First up the title track smashes through the audio spectrum like a battering ram with the kind of drums that even Dillinja would stand up and notice. "The Dread" is more minimal and stripped; the kind of stuff that DJ Krust was throwing down back in the day. Finally "Heaven" is definitely the most highly engineered offering; a futurist techstep journey with an emotive atmosphere and liquid breaks.

  1. Curtain Twitcher (Nina Kraviz Alice Was Here remix) (8:00)
  2. Curtain Twitcher (Nina Kraviz Samba version) (5:00)
  3. Looking Glass (5:44)
  4. Tiresias (Anastasia Kristensen rework) (7:32)
Review: Unsurprisingly, Paul Woolford's Special Request project has become a reference point for London's Houndstooth imprint, the label ran and operated by Fabric, and he's back once more to drop the freshest techno sounds around. What makes this 12" even more special is a two-part appearance from Nina Kraviz, who remixes "Curtain Twitcher" twice, the first being a moody, hubby techno experiment and the second a more light-hearted 'Samba version' that carries the same sort of future-minimalism that says so much with so little. On the flip, "Looking Glass" is a heavy-handed, bad-mannered jungle experiment that lays down an insanely heavy groove of banging breaks sparse bleeps; Anastasia Kristensen's rework of "Tiresias" thrashes out a punitive techno bullet that, once again, is made for a contemporary techno floor.

  3. Remember Me (5:02)
Review: As the sun still sets on their evergreen third album How We Live Spectrasoul deliver a series of killer remixes and versions to celebrate. First up is this golden twist from Calibre. Immaculately redressed to highlight the delicate emotion and beauty of the original, it's yet another heart-stopping work of art from the singular Signature bossman. Spectrasoul themselves take care of "Say What" themselves by twisting up the swaggering halftimer into a beautiful rolling moonlit 170 jam while "Remember Me" closes the wax with its spacious plucks and barbed vocal. You won't forget this in a hurry.

  1. Untitled Horn (5:19)
  2. Faithful (4:11)
  3. Silence (feat LSB) (4:56)
  4. Like This (4:34)
Review: Brighton badboys Spectrasoul have been surprisingly quiet this year, with an EP of remixes of tracks from 2017 album "How We Live" marking their only previous release. This four-tracker, then, boasts their first new music of 2018. It's mostly pretty tasty, all told, with opener "Untitled Horn" slowly building via waves of horror-influenced electronics and disorientated female vocal samples before shuffling towards the dancefloor in a John Carpenter-goes-D&B style. "Faithful" is a deep and soulful roller rich in evocative male vocals, lilting piano and punchy drum hits, while LSB hook-up "Silence" is atmospheric liquid D&B blessed with melancholic orchestration and a punchy, snare-heavy rhythm. The EP concludes with the similarly minded "Like This", which retains serious dancefloor weight despite the cinematic feel of its grandiose production.

  4. Cold Wave (3:26)
  5. Mind Over Matter (feat Inja) (3:32)
Review: Over the last decade, few drum & bass producers have impressed more than Bristol-based Brazilian S.P.Y. While his default setting seems to be summery, string-drenched and giddily soulful, he's also capable of delivering dark and weighty dancefloor onslaughts. Certainly, that seems to be the idea behind the Alone in the Dark series, which launched earlier this summer. There's naturally much to enjoy on this second double-pack in the series, from the booming sub-bass, scorching beats, wavy vocal samples and twinkling pianos of "Get Up" and aggressive, stripped-back moodiness of "Cold Wave" (complete with both industrial sounding riffs and pulsating sub-bass), to the hip-hop/dark jungle fusion of "Mind Over Matter" and ridiculously heavy opener "Termination".

  5. Dreaming (4:40)
Review: Bristol-based Brazilian S.P.Y has been in fine form this year, churning out the hits at a rate of knots. Here he serves up five more slammers to round off the well-received Alone in the Dark trilogy. Opener "Transmission" is undeniably one of his moth forthright tunes to date - a bombastic, riot-inducing anthem fuelled by thunderous electro bass and mind-altering riffs. There's also a tech-tinged feel to the rave-meets-D&B heaviness of "Transmission", while "Dominator Mode" contains some of his toughest drums to date. Elsewhere, "Lockdown" is a buzzing hum of throbbing energy and "Dreaming" tips a wink to the producer's liquid past via a wonderfully sauced-eyed fusion of blissful musicality and tight bottom-end pressure.

Review: Hot on the chem trails of his Dispatch EP "Posse", Cologne's SubMarine returns to Alix Perez's 1985 with his first EP for the label. It leads with "Xertz", a sinewy roller data spitting roller that's been heavily supported by the likes of Monty, Halogenix and Perez himself. "Dive Alarm" is pure cascading panic while "Luna" rumbles with a creepy sense of gothic suspense and pure alien purrs on the bass. Finally "Angler Beat" bigs up all fishermen out there with a bassline that will catch us all hook, line and stinker. Take a deep dive today.

Review: Following the likes of FD, Redeyes and label boss Lenzman himself, Submorphics is the latest to step up to The North Quarter hot seat with his own take on soulful drum & bass. Expressing his widest range and the warmest shades of his palette, the San Francisco vibe flexor delivers his finest; the yearning gutsy soul of "Don't Be So Cold", the heads-down sultry ripples of "Whatchudo", the swaggering hip-hop swing of "Hot Ish", the whirling almost psychedelic textures to the organs and Steo's stunning vocals on "Weather It Out" and the all-out soul belts of "Can't Get Over You". Five slices of genuine soulful drum & bass gold; Lenzman knows what he's up to with The Norther Quarter.

Cat: REDSEAL 019. Rel: 08 Jan 13
  1. Raised By Wolves
  2. Status Anxiety
Review: Tokyo Prose deserves some serious props. His track record has been faultless. Largely riding shotgun with New Zealand label Samurai, he's not dropped a dodgy record yet. And this is one of his best. "Raised By Wolves" first appeared on Samurai's Ways Of The Samurai compilation last year. Now up for full release, it glistens with soft-jazzy edge and an overall Good Looking groove. Previously unreleased "Status Anxiety", meanwhile, is a true gem. Emotional with hints of ice and plenty of star-gazing, this is what the running man dance was invented for. A stellar release.

Review: It's now official: Future Cut are back and they're not mucking around. After years in the pop game, making number one hits for more songs than you care to sing along to in the shower, the Renegade Hardware renegades return to D&B on wax with the able co-piloting from Bournemouth's do-no-wrong duo Ulterior Motive. The result is three cuts that cross the entire breadth of jungle's craggy landscape. "Flash Mob" an all-out, balls-out roller with menacing late 90s undertones, "Bagleys" is a Spirit-esque stepper with sublime percussive Q&A "Second Nature" closes the show on a beautiful Bristolian funk flex. Welcome back Future Cut, big up Ulterior Motive. History has been made right here.

Review: Bizzy B's Junglist returns with a fresh wax outing from Toronto's Vinyl Fixx and the title says it all; "Weapons Grade". It lives up to its moniker, too; a savage splash of brutal choppage it's laden with a range of references and samples that you're likely to recognise... And consequently kick right off to. "Good Body Gal" continues the theme of new-old with a familiar bassline and some warm-as-toast dancehall bars while "Saints & Sinners" pummels us into the ground with some venomous tech funk the freshness of which we haven't experienced since at least 1999. Throw in a killer remix from ADSR and you've got yourself an absolute stinker of a session. Feed your jungle fixx today!

Review: After 12 years in the game, Spanish D&B stable Melting Pot hasn't lost its appetite for promoting rising talents. Here, they offer a vinyl debut to Adrian Moreno AKA Voltage Voodoo. Significant contains four tracks from his recently released debut album of the same name, and is as punchy, raucous and industrial-fired as you'd expect. Choose between the fizzing, concrete-clad electronics, rolling breaks and mutilated rock riffs of "Significant", the bass-heavy jungle-rap of MC Mood hook-up "Make Up", the savage sub-bass and percussive aggression of "No God" and the Nine Inch Nails-goes-D&B growl of closer "King Kong".

Review: Madrid's man in London Vromm has already made some resounding moves on the likes of Critical and Doc Scott's seminal 31 imprint but this could be his boldest move to date on this Cosmic Bridge debut. "For The New Age" is a powerful future soul slicker, all shiny, hopeful and sprung with jazzy flourishes, "Restart" switches to a slimline, jittering cosmic jungle aesthetic while Cosmic Bridge builder Om Unit himself taps in for a beautiful collabo finale "Stargazing". Freeform in its feel and focus, it's a near 10 minute trip that's once again tinged with a jazz mindset thanks to its heavy layers and percussive variations. Beautiful.
