  4. Tough Linen (4:16)
Review: The Brighton boys return with another power-punch collection on their own label Ish Chat. Once again it covers the full spectrum and scope of their skills: Tracks such as "Stock Sound" and "Tough Linen" really do hit hard with their full-flavour basslines and spiked out dynamics while "Waiting For..." reflects their soulful, musical side and "AKA Yoob" takes us to the left of their creations with daring, bouncy experimentalism that sounds like no one else. Spectrasoul are smashing it this year.

  3. Remember Me (5:02)
Review: As the sun still sets on their evergreen third album How We Live Spectrasoul deliver a series of killer remixes and versions to celebrate. First up is this golden twist from Calibre. Immaculately redressed to highlight the delicate emotion and beauty of the original, it's yet another heart-stopping work of art from the singular Signature bossman. Spectrasoul themselves take care of "Say What" themselves by twisting up the swaggering halftimer into a beautiful rolling moonlit 170 jam while "Remember Me" closes the wax with its spacious plucks and barbed vocal. You won't forget this in a hurry.

Think (12")
Cat: INNA 042. Rel: 13 Jun 17
  1. Think (5:44)
  2. Bounty Killer (5:39)
Review: Continually on-point, Spirit follows his recent Function 12" with two more outstanding moments in musical futurism. "Think" surfaces from the dubplate ocean once and for all with its overwhelming dub tidal waves and soul-shuddering pads while "Bounty Killer" just goes straight for the jugular with a vicious riff that stinks of The End around '99. Classic Spirit.

Murderer (12")
Cat: INNA 044. Rel: 05 Jun 18
  1. Murderer (5:36)
  2. Cold Call (5:39)
Review: It's here! After a digital release several months back, Spirit's barbed wire jungle blazers "Murderer" and "Cold Call" finally see the waxy light of day. The former is a rasping, rolling slice of haunted 94 style edginess with a wry Halloween feel to the atmosphere while the latter is all about that rich analogue bassline that bounces between the two-step spaces. Following the heat of his insane Dispatch EP earlier this year, Spirit really smashing 2018 to pieces.

  2. Stardust (feat Bcee)
  3. Heavy Metal
  4. Guidance (feat Total Science)
Review: TWO albums in less than six months? S.P.Y has been smashing it this year! More importantly, they've been killer albums, too. Here Hospital has handpicked four of the second album's many highlights. And, as the title suggests, they document his love for the roots that he fell in love with at the beginning. A lot of ground is covered; from the glistening synth raindrops of the Bcee-collaborated "Stardust" to the darker, Terminator-style "Heavy Metal" via the rushy jungle skips and breezes of "Guidance", S.P.Y truly is a master of his craft and understands the purest dynamics of the genre consummately.

  4. Cold Wave (3:26)
  5. Mind Over Matter (feat Inja) (3:32)
Review: Over the last decade, few drum & bass producers have impressed more than Bristol-based Brazilian S.P.Y. While his default setting seems to be summery, string-drenched and giddily soulful, he's also capable of delivering dark and weighty dancefloor onslaughts. Certainly, that seems to be the idea behind the Alone in the Dark series, which launched earlier this summer. There's naturally much to enjoy on this second double-pack in the series, from the booming sub-bass, scorching beats, wavy vocal samples and twinkling pianos of "Get Up" and aggressive, stripped-back moodiness of "Cold Wave" (complete with both industrial sounding riffs and pulsating sub-bass), to the hip-hop/dark jungle fusion of "Mind Over Matter" and ridiculously heavy opener "Termination".

  4. Lockdown (4:44)
  5. Dreaming (4:40)
Review: Bristol-based Brazilian S.P.Y has been in fine form this year, churning out the hits at a rate of knots. Here he serves up five more slammers to round off the well-received Alone in the Dark trilogy. Opener "Transmission" is undeniably one of his moth forthright tunes to date - a bombastic, riot-inducing anthem fuelled by thunderous electro bass and mind-altering riffs. There's also a tech-tinged feel to the rave-meets-D&B heaviness of "Transmission", while "Dominator Mode" contains some of his toughest drums to date. Elsewhere, "Lockdown" is a buzzing hum of throbbing energy and "Dreaming" tips a wink to the producer's liquid past via a wonderfully sauced-eyed fusion of blissful musicality and tight bottom-end pressure.

  1. Stealth & Stylus - "Dire Straights"
  2. Stealth - "Deep Inside"
Review: Two key prospects in drum & bass's emerging new breed, Stealth and Stylus hook up for a gritty, snappy growler that's not too far away from the work of Optiv & BTK or even Calyx & TeeBee. Executed with precision sharpness, "Dire Straits" is a far cry from the guitar noodling rockers that share its name. Meanwhile on the B we find Stealth going solo on "Deep Inside". Armed with a Darrison-level vocal sample, it treads a fine line between filth and industrial soul. Lovely stuff.

Review: Level up! Strategy sheds a little light on skills you might not know he's got in the form of "Lanterns", his debut EP. Usually known for rallying up the troops with Dub Phizix and laying down rapid-fire bars, here we find the Salford vibe lord showcasing his beat skills... And they're serious. From the click-boom ricochets of the title track to the rare-cooked menace of "Kings Of Kochi" via the waspy political triple-skipper "Put God First", this is Strategy writing a whole new chapter. Review: Following the likes of FD, Redeyes and label boss Lenzman himself, Submorphics is the latest to step up to The North Quarter hot seat with his own take on soulful drum & bass. Expressing his widest range and the warmest shades of his palette, the San Francisco vibe flexor delivers his finest; the yearning gutsy soul of "Don't Be So Cold", the heads-down sultry ripples of "Whatchudo", the swaggering hip-hop swing of "Hot Ish", the whirling almost psychedelic textures to the organs and Steo's stunning vocals on "Weather It Out" and the all-out soul belts of "Can't Get Over You". Five slices of genuine soulful drum & bass gold; Lenzman knows what he's up to with The Norther Quarter.

  1. Soundboy Don't Push Your Luck (4:36)
  2. 368ft High & Rising (6:38)
Review: In the eleven years that have passed since he made his debut, Jack Stevens AKA Sully has earned a reputation for making "rude" bass music that gleefully mashes together elements of D&B, old skool jungle, dubstep and UK garage. His latest two-track missive is a shameless tribute to the jungle era, with A-side "Soundboy Don't Push Your Luck" peppering a sharp, edit-tasty junglist riddim with rumbling bass, toaster samples and a hooky female chorus that doffs a cap to vintage lovers rock. It's utterly bonkers and rather silly, but also tons of fun and an almost guaranteed floorfiller. On the flip, he doffs a cap to early drum and bass, flitting between ultra-heavy breakbeats, sun-kissed instrumental samples and sharply cut-up ragga MC samples.

  4. Etch - "Predator" (7:16)
Review: Green Village is a label operating out of Jersey City that deals in all manner of sounds from rugged house to scuffed up techno, but with a distinct bent towards broken rhythms and plenty of bass. This various artists 12" plies a diverse trade, with all tracks bound together by their ruffness. Theft & TOYC bring some loud and lurid bass synths to their snaking slice of oddball club music "Atlantic", while BD1982 places focus on dense layers of choppy drums and needlepoint acid arpeggios. Eighth Ruin delivers a truly head turning beat with the appropriately named "Whip", and then Etch pays tribute to a classic movie with the excellent breakbeat science of "Predator".

US mystery man Tlim Shug paves the path with chugging Chi-town jack that wouldn't go amiss in a Farina set while Playstation (a Frenchman you may know as Maukook) lays down an Omni Trio flavoured jungle joint that's coated in pads so thick and breezy you can taste them. 2. Status Anxiety
Review: Tokyo Prose deserves some serious props. His track record has been faultless. Largely riding shotgun with New Zealand label Samurai, he's not dropped a dodgy record yet. And this is one of his best. "Raised By Wolves" first appeared on Samurai's Ways Of The Samurai compilation last year. Now up for full release, it glistens with soft-jazzy edge and an overall Good Looking groove. Previously unreleased "Status Anxiety", meanwhile, is a true gem. Emotional with hints of ice and plenty of star-gazing, this is what the running man dance was invented for. A stellar release.

Review: Celebrating 21 years of CIA, Total Science remain one of the most consistent and authentic acts in drum & bass and their label reflects this. These four tracks alone are perfect examples; Villem adds a little mystic touch to last year's collab with Quardran & Iris "False Alarm", Critical Impact bring the iconic smoky tones of Jakes to the blend with the heads-down "Geeks & Geez", the boys themselves take us for a heart-eyed trip down liquid lane on "What I Need" while Arcatype continues the dreamweaving right the way through the last B-side groove with the soulful swoons of "Cascade". 21 gun salute!

  2. Clap Ya (4:21)
  3. Anode (feat Icicle) (4:55)
  4. Kamakura (4:44)
Review: A brand new label and brand new chapter for Ulterior Motive. Guidance was the name of the night they held in Bournemouth as they cut their teeth and chowed down on their craft. Now the Headz alumni return to these roots with four stark, stripped back and roughened constructs; "The Wobbler" takes the lead with its woozy synth hits and SP's distinctive flow. "Clap Ya" is all about the sci-fi bashy steppery while "Anode" sees them sparring with Icicle on a brittle, sinewy one-note jam that gets very messy very quickly. "Kamakura" sends us packing to the Orient for the final excursion as eastern strings and scales shroud a wriggling, spacious drum arrangement that smacks of the duo's originality. We need more Guidance like this.

Review: It's now official: Future Cut are back and they're not mucking around. After years in the pop game, making number one hits for more songs than you care to sing along to in the shower, the Renegade Hardware renegades return to D&B on wax with the able co-piloting from Bournemouth's do-no-wrong duo Ulterior Motive. The result is three cuts that cross the entire breadth of jungle's craggy landscape. "Flash Mob" an all-out, balls-out roller with menacing late 90s undertones, "Bagleys" is a Spirit-esque stepper with sublime percussive Q&A "Second Nature" closes the show on a beautiful Bristolian funk flex. Welcome back Future Cut, big up Ulterior Motive. History has been made right here.

Review: Dragged in a drum & bass drama scenario earlier this year due to recent use of the same Rockers sample, Undercover Agent's "Babylon" (originally released under the guise Splash) enjoys two essential updates as the legendary Juice imprint is relaunched. DJ Future maintains its cutlass drum edits and trippy vocal layers while adding more momentum and switches in the rhythm while don Bladerunner rebuilds the original with modern day production muscle and rifle kick drum rolls that can lose shoes at 20 paces.

Restrained, soulful and ageless, every cut has been of note and this quartet is no exception. "FLLN 4 U" is all about the roomy, cloud-jumping big breeze vibes, "Milestone" flexes on a star-bound gospel level, "More Jungle" eases and pleases with lush dubby horn washes and less-is-more vocal touches. Finally "From Inside" we're taken back on the cosmic, lean space soul feels. Precision classy / heavy ratio business right here.

This EP takes us closer to 30 and, as always, all vibes are covered: "Luv U Tnite" is a laser-blazing dark-disco vocal fire-up, "Love Call" slaps and stamps with fizzy early 2000s Hospital style soul while "Diamond Dust" adds a little poignancy and restraint amid a whirlwind of textures and rolling drums. Looking for a little more grunt and glass in your groove? Wriggle on over to "Wizbit" for the lewdest jam of the package.

Review: Brazil's reputation for forward-thinking drum & bass has developed ever since Bryan Gee imported Marky and Patife almost 20 years ago. Now serving up its third generation of talent, Hospital's close ties with the country garner some of the best dancefloor tracks Brazil has given us to date: Highlights include Urbandawn showing off a much more dramatic string to his bow on "Messiah Complex", S.P.Y continuing to strip things back to bare-bone basics on the super-dark "Hidden Fire" and Nitri subverting jump-up with a classic nod to the squelchy signature set by Moving Fusion all those years ago. And that's only half the EP. File under essential.

A droning, scuzzy bassline flexes up and down over brisk rolling breaks while some beautiful ambient pads creep in from the background, "In Search Of" takes us much deeper down the rabbit hole with a shark-like tech bassline and ghostly vocals. Finally "Tell Me" seals the deal on a springy jungle fix, complete with a breakdown sent direct, recorded delivery, from heaven. Immaculate.

Review: Bizzy B's Junglist returns with a fresh wax outing from Toronto's Vinyl Fixx and the title says it all; "Weapons Grade". It lives up to its moniker, too; a savage splash of brutal choppage it's laden with a range of references and samples that you're likely to recognise... And consequently kick right off to. "Good Body Gal" continues the theme of new-old with a familiar bassline and some warm-as-toast dancehall bars while "Saints & Sinners" pummels us into the ground with some venomous tech funk the freshness of which we haven't experienced since at least 1999. Throw in a killer remix from ADSR and you've got yourself an absolute stinker of a session. Feed your jungle fixx today!
