  1. Palm Trees Love
  2. Spring Ball
  3. Spring Ball (Simon Haydo rework)
Review: Polish studio boffin Naphta seems to be a producer on the rise. His most recent EP, Solar Empire, created memorable deep house tracks out of humid instrumentation, loose percussion and curious South American influences. Here he's at it again, offering exotic, sun-ripened grooves for Axel Boman and company's Studio Barnhus imprint. "Palm Trees Love" has a little more lazy disco flavour, with glistening guitars, snappy handclaps and a warm, dub-influenced bassline helping to create a particularly Balearic mood. There's an even more humid, South American feel to the choppy "Spring Ball", which is also turned into an hypnotic chunk of heads-down tech-house - complete with Batucada drums and intoxicating electronic noises - by remixer Simon Haydo.

  5. Magic Mirror (Aufgang B remix) (5:06)
Review: Italy's Andrea Noce makes the perfect addition to Selva Elettrica's label, a collective of artists with a similar vision of electronic music. Fitting right in to the synth-pop-meets-coldwave aesthetic of the imprint, Noce delivers "Pray 4 Ca$h" as her opener, a house-driven slice of spacey pop that is further twisted into a more concrete club banger by Tormen Tonee. "Hawaii Bombay" is slower, drugged-out and tropical in its flavour, whereas "Magic Mirror" folds its heavy swarms of bass over placid melodies and luscious pads; anted-up and made bump-ready by a remix from Aufgang B. Lovely stuff.

Review: Oh gosh. Following last year's self-titled sandy-toed diamond, Phil Mison's Noche Espanola hits the vibe bullseye once again with this stunning 400-only summer anthem in waiting. Fittingly vibrant, feel-good and measured with its big chords, chorus vocal and cheeky horns, this has so much to offer it oozes out over two versions and sun-kissed outro. Instant mood-raiser, this will be hammered all summer we guarantee it.

Noche Espanola (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: HR 004. Rel: 29 Apr 17
  1. Noche Espanola (6:07)
  2. Noche (dub) (5:19)
Review: This breezy, hand-stamped 12" comes with little or no information about the producer (or producers) behind it. It's hard to know whether it's an original production - admittedly blessed with samples from an old, Balearic-era groover - or a re-edit. Either way, there's something deliciously sun-kissed and saucer-eyed about the A-side title track, where synthesized horns, jangly acoustic guitars and an elastic dub disco groove provide plenty of thrills for those seeking White Isle disco flavours. The Idjut Boys style dub disco influences naturally come to the floor on the flipside "Noche (Dub)", which also boasts some languid flamenco guitars, fluid piano lines and rush-inducing electronics.

  3. Azizi's Dance (7:52)
  4. Kaia (Man Power Bottle Poppin 89 remix) (8:33)
Review: Nancy Noise has been a key player on the forefront of the Balearic scene since as long ago as the late 1980s (making appearances on various early Orb remixes and side projects), and the DJ/producer has enjoyed a new lease of life in recent years. Remarkably, "Kaia" is her debut solo single. The original version is the epitome of Jose Padilla style Balearica; a gorgeous fusion of Rotary Connection style instrumentation, flamenco guitars and eyes-wide-shut electric piano solos. It's accompanied by the grinning, dream house era dancefloor cheeriness of "Azizi's Dance" and two alternate versions of the title track. Man Power's quirky, electro-driven remake works well alongside Leo Mas and Fabrice's stunning house remix echoing shades of Joe Clausell and the golden era of Italian House music.

Review: New label Kontrapunkt's mission is to present diverse music that spans from world music infused house, hard hitting & lo-fi techno through to considered ambient music. With the latter in mind, the Leipzig based label indeed makes a journey into that field of electronic music for their second release. Here, French producer Octave Diesis delivers an album full of melancholic yet thoughtful neoclassical songs. The songs live mostly from the enigmatic piano melodies paired with some well-thought synthesizer sounds he composed. Expect ambient environments and dramatic, soothing layers. A truly splendid debut release.

  4. A Paddle Around The Drowned World (4:16)
Review: Gavin Sutherland aka Fudge Fingas is back under a new alias for Edinburgh based house oddballs Firecracker. A long known staple of the Scottish imprint, they themselves seem equally as perplexed as we are- but we can all agree that it's certainly not altogether unpleasant. Boss man Lindsay Todd describes it as 'occupying the space between alien-revisited exotica, classic jacking house workouts and a BoC 'Chromakey Dreamcoat' kinda vibe'. From the swirling and hypnotic esoterica of "Descent Into Nasqueron" to the brooding journey into the abyss that is "Chapel Perilous Closed" on the A side. The flip features the EP's most accessible track "Late Feeling Yourself", a smoky, sexed-up, late-night deep house jam that calls to mind his usual work or that by label staple Linkwood.

With one foot in classic Talking Heads inspired funk variations and the other in the catch-all stylistic melee of the modern age, this is highly developed party music for well-read rug cutters to bust out shapes to. 2. Sweet As Rain (album mix) (9:56)
Review: Claremont 56 boss Paul Murphy fell in love with Pan Electric's 2004 cut "Sweet as Rain" after hearing it in Japan a few years ago. Since it has never previously been released on vinyl, he decided to license it from its creator, veteran producer Matt Coldrick. As sublime piece of next-level downtempo bliss rich in Marimba style melodies, calming acoustic guitars and traditional Ethiopian vocals, "Sweet as Rain" is near perfect in every way. Brilliantly, Coldrick has also provided a recently reworked "Album version" which stretches out enticingly for 10 minutes across all of side B. Slower to build and laden with mesmerizing musical elements, it's even better than the magical original mix.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Uzuri can always be trusted as an on-point barometer of the strongest currents in contemporary deep house, and here they welcome a new talent into their midst in the form of Panama Keys. "Panamarama" is a gorgeous suite of organic instrumentation, all Spanish guitar licks and pattering bongos, which then get handed over to the mighty Joe Clausell for the soaring, energised "Harvest Remix". "Vyrgin Island" may well be the stand-out track on the record with its infectious flute lines, chiming vibes and sensual, punchy bassline, but don't overlook the blissful ambience of final vignette "Flying Whiles".

  4. Conga Blue (instrumental) (6:48)
Review: Any new release from husband-and-wife duo Peaking Lights is worth checking, and this surprise single on their Two Flowers imprint - their first for two years - is no exception. While their psychedelically inclined leftfield pop is always colourful, it's rarely quite as bouncy and confident as "Little Flower", where Chloe Sevigny talks seductively over undulating synthesizer melodies, kaleidoscopic electronics and an almost military style rhythm track. Arguably even better is B-side "Conga Blue" (available in both vocal and instrumental interpretations), which moulds their usual hallucinatory pop with dub disco and synth-wave flourishes. It's one of those tracks that just gets better with each successive listen.

  4. B&B - "Read Me" (5:12)
Review: With temperatures rising and the sun threatening to stick around for a while, the time is right for the second instalment in Aficionado Recordings' compilation style Good Measure series. Sometime Claremont 56 artist Simon Peter kicks things off with the shuffling beats, dreamy chords and glistening guitars of "Ottimismo", before Document Swell man Simon Cotter reaches for the chiming synth melodies and bubbly drum machine beats on "Pianta Road". On the flip you'll find the Seahawks-meets-pitched-down-dream-house positivity of "Una Prueba De Amor" by Murena and the contemporary jazz beauty of B&B's standout "Read Me". In other words, it's another stellar collection of genuinely Balearic treats.

  1. Phantom Band/Linear Johnson & The Protons - "Rush Rush"
  2. Drums Off Chaos - "Drums Off Chaos"
Review: The sadly departed Jaki Liebezeit was the kind of drummer whose influence will be continually recognised over the decades to come. Best known for his work in Can, there are also many more sides to this singular sticksman, and Emotional Rescue has chosen to shine a light on his post-Can period living in Stollwerck. On the A side of this 7" curio is the sound of Phantom Band with Linear Johnson & The Protons. "Rush Rush" has a spiky new wave bent to it, but still Liebezeit's drumming stands out. The B side "Drums Off Chaos" need little explanation - it's the sound of one of the all-time drumming greats letting rip in a ferocious blast of percussive abandon.

Review: Pole Jam Vinyl - a wax-only collaboration between Satin Jackets' Glam Jam Artists and Welsh outfit Pole Position Recordings - is always a reliable source of club-ready nu-disco fare. There's naturally much to admire on the label's latest multi-artist EP. Pioneerball kicks things off with the cheery and musically expansive "Deltaplane" - all flailing slap bass, delay-laden hits, sparkling electronics and sharp strings - before Falqo steps up with a chunk of boogie-influenced blue-eyed soul (the deliciously positive "Across The Sea"). On the flip you'll find the pitched down, Balearic minded dub disco of Sasha Anastov's "Sea For Two", and the near horizontal soul smoothness of Gayana's "Since The Night (Klar&PF Mix)".

After incubating for almost 2 years while extracting and forging gems in the south-east space-time anomalies, the untraceable sound of Plevna has reached the optimum balance between eighties delicate nostalgia and contemporary local oriental melody. Bouncing on the delightfully twisted 9/8 groove, this is a unique contact with a multiverse under meticulous construction, an excursion abundant in haunting tunes and unfamiliar melancholy.

Review: Private Agenda are a Berlin-based crew of smooth cruising Balearic sailors that have previously shored up on International Feel. This new record for Nunorthen Soul leads in with the mellow, reflective "Dusk", a jam bursting with musicality from every bar. "Dawn" places the piano at the forefront of the mix, curling out a beatless ballad loaded with Mediterranean romance which Faze Action dutifully scoop up and spread over a steady pulse of laconic house music. Ron Basejam takes the track and creates a funkier beatdown for it, while Ian Blevins creates the most club-minded version on the record, without sacrificing the dreamy tone of the original.

Review: First Word's first release of the year and Quiet Storm's first substantial release since his album The First Day, "Human Being: The Short Story Of A Reed" is a beautiful conceptual narrative that explores the idea of a reed yearning to be human but discovering it's not quite as easy as it looks. The music is, however, as beautiful as you'd expect from the Parisian composer. Ranging from the soft pensive vocal texture allure of opener "Human" to the eventual dizzying bewilderment of the finale "Being" by way of stimulating chapters such as the lucid bossa "The Reed" and the eerie, night fog horse ride "Risk It", this is a stunning, stirring piece of work that reveals more and more on every listen.

Review: Given that Balearic Gabba Sound System are big fans of Walter Del Vecchio's work under the Quiroga alias, it's little surprise to find him popping up on the Hell Yeah label they call home. Like many Napoli-based producers, Del Verchio is a master at joining the dots between languid, synth-heavy Balearica, pitched-down deep house, and the kind of kaleidoscopic electronics that were once the backbone of Italy's dream house movement. All of these elements can be found on superb A-side "Viaggio A Tulum", alongside some blissfully brilliant electric piano flourishes. On the flip, he slows things down to a mind-altering pace on the dubbed-out acid trip-hop of "Non Dire Notte" and presses the button marked "drowsy ambient" on "Prati Bagnati" and closer "Bava".

"Cups & Balls" builds with a Latin bass momentum and subtle disco emotion and "Ciao Fischio" takes a splash into the sunset shallow end with lazy beats and dreamy keys. "Citta di Mare" lights the final candle with touching delicacy. Far away organs, forefront breaks and a sense of space so vast you feel you could float away, Quiroga is really on the summertime money right here.

Review: Having previously popped up on ESP Institute, Juan Ramos teams up with Trent to form Greenvision, making their first appearance on the home of freshly squeezed discoid deviance, Cocktail D'Amore. "Surdinia" takes over the A side with a bombastic array of peak time devices in its utility belt, from bubbling acid tweaks to gluttonous monosynth leads and a chunky set of drums. "Meccanica" is no slouch either, laying down thick slabs of synthesized grease in pursuit of a different kind of party track. This is unusual, distinctive club music for those who want the crowd to stop and pay attention.

Review: Robin Lee takes a break from his day job as Faze Action to slip into the occasional Rudy's Midnight Machine alias for this outing on his own label. It's a mellow, atmospheric ride into pastures you wouldn't normally associate with Faze Action, although "Midnight Safari" is smooth and luxurious enough to feel right in any context. "In The Air" has a mysterious air to it, helped in no small part by the evocative Eastern lilt of the strings running through the centre of the track. There's a sassy boogie step powering "Reach Backless," while "Windchimes" flips the script with a semi-ambient live bass reverie. It's back to the party one last time with "Solar Plex" though - this record is about synthy funk first and foremost.

Review: Not being satisfied with his debut for Music For Dreams - coming through on the label with the wonderful Island LP - man like Ruf Duggles is back on the Danish imprint with some brutally sublime remixes of the tunes featured on it. The always excellent Peaking Lights reshapes "Speedboat" into a dubby, chilled-out kinda jam, while AL Breadwinner proceeds to deconstruct "Rasta Beach" and turns it into a minimal dub groover fort the after hours. On the flip, 2814 mystifies "Tendacayou" into a wave, air-filled lick in a new age kind of vibe, whereas Kenneth Bager goes all balearic on us for "Dominica". Lovely.

Porn Wax Seven (hand-numbered & stamped pink marbled vinyl 10")
Cat: PW 7. Rel: 31 Mar 14
  1. Disco Panorama
  2. Magic Words
Review: Spanish sound sorcerer Santana steps over to Porn Wax for a highly limited marble vinyl 10". "Disco Panorama" stomps with a beautifully sedate groove as clouds of synths cast a subtle spell over the beats. "Magic Words", meanwhile, is a more stripped back affair where the emphasis is focused squarely on the big lolloping bassline and a series of emotional chords ebb and flow over the top. Genuinely stunning. And with a guarantee of no digital and no represses, this really can't be missed!

Review: Emotional Response open the Secret Circuit archives to some of Eddie Ruscha's contemporaries from the City of Angels for a fine exercise in how to do a remix 12". First up is Suzanne Kraft, aka Diego Herrera who forms one half of Blase along with Ruscha; in his hands the crazy afro-stylings of "Afrobotics" are pulled towards the dancefloor, adding percussion and sirens, forging the originals vibes in to a ethno-beat club jam that is all about that heads down moment. Next up The Samps turns "Shockers" into a warped mesh of psychedelic dance, whilst Superior Elevation's Tom Noble adds some killer boogie vibes to "Underdogs". Finally Sun Araw man Cameron Stallones appears under rare alter-ego Aristrocrat P. Child to re-edit "Roll" in superb fashion.
