  1. Dinosaur Baby
  2. Dinosaur Baby (12" dub)
  3. Dinosaur Baby (Rune Lindbaek remix)
  4. Dinosaur Baby (Luke Solomon remix)
Review: Is It Balearic? welcome the mellow charms of Chris Coco and Camillo Miranda to lay down an unusual paean to a prehistoric love with the truly breezy drifter "Dinosaur Baby." While the tale might be a quirky one, the music is the real deal, all tumbling percussion locked into a slow, head-nodding groove, and this comes through even stronger on the "12" Dub". On the flip, Rune Lindbaek delivers a remix that fleshes the original out with laconic disco flourihes, and then Luke Solomon's version injects a little housey energy into the make up with his usual flair for off-kilter party fuel.

  1. Lucid Memory
  2. Pugs Life
  3. The Delete Of Society
  4. New Horizons
Review: Roy Comanchero is a bit of a mystery. According to the brief bio accompanying this debut EP for Gerd Janson's Running Back imprint, Comanchero "hates modern production tools like laptops" and travels round looking for beaches to inspire his records. There's certainly a vintage feel to the four tracks showcased here, which combine heavy electrofunk basslines and classic synthesizer lines with Scandolearic melodies and a hazy deep house sensibility. It's a formula that guarantees good fun, from the Terje-does-boogie grooves of "Pugs Life" and bubbling analogue deep house of "The Delete of Society", to the slowly unfurling Balearic bliss of "New Horizons".

  4. Folha De Jurema (Carrot Green Granola mix) (7:38)
Review: Nicola Cruz returns with another spellbinding fusion of Afro Brazilian charm in the form of "Folha De Jurema". With the dusky dulcets of Arteria FM, the dusty strums of Spaniol and sultry plucks of Salvador Arguaya, Cruz commands a decorated cast as they explore a mystical new vision of a traditional Brazilian folk standard. The remixes are just as warm and alluring as Xique Xique adds a little steel string tension, Crussen maps out a chugging Scandinavian odyssey and Rio's Carrot Green brings us back home to the motherland with a poignant, hazy flutter of house soul. Stunning.

Review: New kids on the reissue block, New Zealand's Strangelove Music are off to a flying start with this beautiful 1983 art pop record from subversive chanteuse Lena D'Agua. "Jardim Zoologico" fuses electro boogie with Afrofunk with healthy measures of cosmic polish while "Tao" is a straight up Balearic gem that sparkles with sentiment and horizontal soul. Only ever released on Portuguese label Valentim De Carvalho, this reissue is over 30 years overdue.

Review: Brand new anonymous edit collective Delicate Wash start the spin cycle with four absolutely stunning slices of deeply dug funk soul. Laden with cosmic and Balearic nuances, from the Fleetwood Mac-esque twangs and glides of "Oh Michela" through to the playful slapbass, bluesy drama and raw uplift of the K&D recalling "Christian Does It Better" via the psychedelic subtleties and mild trippiness of "Web Objects" and the wilier jazz informed spirals of "La Salvazione Meravigliosa", these are four superbly polished and sculpted finds that will clean any floor you're faced with (delicately of course).

On Retinae (12") (1 per customer)
Cat: MFM 010. Rel: 20 Jan 16
  1. On Retinae (West version) (5:13)
  2. On Retinae (East version) (5:13)
Review: Amsterdam archivalists Music From Memory dig up yet more gold from a byegone era, with this 12" squaring their focus on the Japanese synth poppers Dip In The Pool. The Japanese group comprising Miyako Koda and Tatsuji Kim first emerged in 1986 with Silence, its debut for venerable UK indie Rough Trade, and remain active today. The focus of MFM's attentions are the two East and West versions of "On Retinae" that bookend the act's 1989 LP Retinae which both feature the clarinet playing skills of Mariah bandleader Yasuaki Shimizu. As you might expect, the East version features Japanese vocals from Koda whilst the West has her singing in English; otherwise they are identical and a strong contender to close out any night of dancing. Cheers to Abel, Tako and Jamie for this one!

  2. Tore - "She's A Lady" (4:04)
  3. Elkin & Nelson - "Abran Paso - Ahoa (Enrolle)" (4:08)
  4. Van McCoy & The Soul City Symphony - "Spanish Boogie" (3:33)
Review: Soon, DJ Harvey will release The Sound of Mercury Rising, a compilation themed around some of the music championed at his summer residency at Pikes Hotel, Ibiza. This four-track taster 12" not only acts as a sampler for the CD version, but also offers the chance to own four excellent and hard-to-find gems. You'll struggle to find a more Balearic disco cut than Danish outfit Tore's 1979 killer "She's a Lady" - think the Bee-Gees with Flamenco guitars - while Elkin & Nelson's "Abran Paso - Aboa (Enrole)" is a spiraling chunk of flamenco-psychedelia fusion. Elsewhere, Van McCoy & Soul City Symphony's "Spanish Boogie" is a jaunty disco number full of crunchy Clavinet lines and rising horn lines, while Tony Esposito's "Danza Dell'Acqua" is as eccentric and wide-eyed as they come.

Ruff Draft 09 (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: RUFFDRAFT 09. Rel: 28 Nov 16
  1. Alfred (7:54)
  2. Blood On Your Hands (5:39)
Review: Cottam's Ruff Draft label makes a logical move and turns to a long-serving champion of gritty, soul-powered house jams from the tough side. DJ Nature may have made his name many moons ago, but he proves to be as relevant as ever on this killer two-track release. "Alfred" is a tightly wound box jam that manages to maintain tension throughout without needing to pander to the release part of the process, sounding all the more exciting for it. "Blood On Your Hands" meanwhile finds Nature heading into the scuffed, soul-sampling territory he's most at home in, and the ensuing rumble of off-key funk is impossible to refute.

  1. Let's Go Party (original)
  2. Let's Go Party (Brioski remix)
  3. Slumber (original)
  4. Slumber (El Diablo's Social Club remix)
Review: After taking us on a drug chug at the start of the year DJ Rocca serves up 2 tracks for the next EDSC Release.

Lets Go Party kicks things off.... stabby chords, Roland percussion, catchy vocal shots, bass-line and massive E'd up breakdowns make this a must have slate for your box.

Th remix comes in the form of an Italo banger from a fave of the El Diablo's cartel - Brioski who goes straight for the heart of the dance floor and rips it right out.

Slumber slows the pace down a bit sounding like something from a late 70's Italian horror movie...pulsating chords & echoey piano reminiscent of Claudio Simonetti & John Carpenter.

El Diablo's Social Club remix stays in the same vein making making sparse use of the eerie piano whilst adding a chuggy bassline, heavy arps and some extra guitars courtesy of Crazy P's Tim Davies.

  3. Hyperspace Is No Place (7:09)
  4. Evolove Version (7:36)
Review: We are, of course, always keen to receive any new music that comes through from the Don't DJ collective - particularly on their own Diskant imprint - but we'd been waiting on this appearance for Japan's EM Records for a long while now. There's just something unashamedly right about this collaboration, from the music itself right down to the artwork and the rest of the like-minded artists that reside on this wonderful catalogue. The Don't DJ brothers have gone deeper than previous releases here, starting with the Nippon-minded dubbiness of "Hyperspace Is The Place", followed by the earthier, more vibrant melodic textures of the wavy "Forest People Plot". On the B-side, "Hyperspace Is No Place" bangs out a steady kick drum over deep, aqueous bleeps washed amid a sparse ocean of ambient delight, and "Evolve Version" provides the 'housiest' moment on this four-tracker in the form of an ethereal bombshell with a subtle balearic charm. Wonderful - you can't miss it!

Review: More quality grooves from Washington DC label specializing in reissuing obscure and unknown 70s and 80s dance music. This time around is Dreamcast who are Davon Bryant in conjunction with Swedish guy Sasac aka King Al. "Liquid Deep" is sexy late night deep funk the way it was always intended and Bryant's smooth as silk vocals are just like... Wow! So with Dreamcast on the vocals and Sasac on the beat, we are hoping there's more things on the way from this trans coastal duo in 2017.

  1. So Far (original extended take)
  2. So Far (Leo Gunn remix)
Review: Dubbyman is on a roll with his releases at the moment, not least thanks to his incredible Deep Is Dead album landing recently on Deep Explorer. This time the Spanish deep house maestro is helping launch First Floor with an original jam that revels in a blanket of fog. "So Far" is the deepest of house jams, rolling along slowly and smoky without losing its presence, thanks in no small part to the soulful croon of the unnamed vocalist. Leo Gunn then steps up for the B-side, remixing "So Far" into a sprightly terrace anthem replete with snappy piano chords to warm your cockles, but fear not because that all-encompassing Dubbyman vibe persists throughout this release.

Review: Earthboogie - aka London soundsystem owners Izaak Gray and Nicola Robinson - make their wax debut with three raw, groove laden disco blends. Digging deep into both afrofunk and Italo roots, there's a universal musical language that grabs you physically across all three cuts. "Mr Mystery" sits between Booker T & The Mgs and Daniele Baldelli while "Route Ten To Interzone" is an energetic township jam with added synth sheen. Finally we're seduced by the Balearic weaves, ripples, twangs and horns of "The EB Theme". A rainbow of vibes from start to finish, this one's hard to put down.

Review: Peckham rising: the Eccentric crew celebrate five years of parties with five more slabs of obscure, deck-ready cosmic gold. Both "Cosa Rosa" and "Wake Up" ease us in gently with shimmering synths and well-tempered slo-mo grooves but "Nar Nar Nehe" ups the energy with a rolling synth boogie groove that's peppered with layers or synth-tom percussion and dubby echoes. Those in need of a swamp wallow should head for the soaking wet bass of "Och Eye" before we're whisked away in an easterly direction on a vibe made purely of faraway twangs, dubby percussion and yearning atmospheres. Genuinely stunning.

  6. Antonio Nicola Bruno - "Danza E Ridanza" (B version) (3:59)
Review: Archeo Recordings chart a course for the Balearics with this laid back delight of overlooked Italian island grooves. Tony Esposito is a long-serving singer-songwriter, and two tracks from his 2004 CD Viaggio Tribale get a vinyl cut here. "Dove C'e Luce" gets a special, 90s tinged remix from LucaEffeSunset. Antonio Nicola Bruno's "Storia Della Terra Mia" is the first of three unreleased tracks from this little known Lucan artist, striking a curious note with folk undertones and a sunny disposition. There's a more dramatic tone to "Danza E Ridanza," which takes on an almost Talking Heads-esque quality for the "B Version" that closes this high quality 12" from the ever reliable Archeo camp.

  1. Take You To A Secret Place
  2. Take You To A Secret Place (dub mix)
  3. Take You To A Secret Place (Kuniyuki Hard remix)
  4. Take You To A Secret Place (Angophora remix)
Review: Not An Animal are known for their heated takes on the art of disco-sampling house music, and Ess O Ess is one of the key factors in defining that sound. This comes through in spades on Take You To A Secret Place, where the title track comes marching out atop a deadly bassline that will cut through any mix to get the people freaking out. The dub mix is equally deadly, flying a generous dose of cosmic sparkle into the mix without losing the punch in the original production. Kuniyuki Hard takes a daring approach that slows the track down to a creep and emphasises space and tension. The Angophora version is even more drastic, seemingly stripping all the recognisable elements of the track out and leaving behind a plaintive thread of ambient instrumentation.

Review: Barely a month has passed since the release of Max Essa's latest sumptuous long-player - the lovely "Lanterns" on Music For Dreams - but the Balearic hotshot already has more killer cuts to showcase via a second EP for Hell Yeah Recordings. The real triumph is languid A-side "Han Zoc Roc (Midori Coup)", a gently unfurling fusion of slow motion electronics, gentle beats, meandering melodies and blissful instrumental solos that changes shape several times over 13 mesmerizing minutes. Over on side B, the jazz guitar-rich wonder that is "How You Showed Me Everything" sounds like a tribute to Antenna classic "African Queen", while "Rainbird's Alfafa Jam" is a slightly more energetic workout that could arguably be described as "Balearic funk".

Review: Light Of Other Days is a Zurich based label run by Marc Hofweber and Georg Munz and for this release they tap mysterious trio Ethimm for this rather beautiful EP. Starting out with a cover of Rhythm & Sound's "Why" featuring Veronique's gorgeous vocals, this is a lovely electro-modern classical crossover journey. They then team up with fellow Swiss purveyor of the deep Lexx on the smooth late night groove of "Late". On the flip, "Next" and "Done" go for some rather reflective and dubbed out downbeat vibes which will appeal to fans of Blackest Ever Black acts Dalhous or Raime. Curious stuff indeed!

Review: This is a new re-edit series of mysterious origin, said by the shadowy figures behind it to be "just made for fun". So what's in store? Well, the A-side contains a tasty, chopped-up and leisurely overdubbed version of an old Marvin Gaye recording (from the Motown legend's disco period) that was previously bitten by the Instruments of Rapture crew back in the mid 2000s. Arguably even better is the sensual B-side, which somehow manages to make a deliciously seductive Sade track even deeper and more loved-up. While some may argue that the world doesn't need any more Sade re-edits, this is undoubtedly one of the strongest and most alluring we've heard to date.

Following "Standing Still Is An Illusion" on Rocksteady Disco come two more sublime Balearic affairs that fit Claremont 56 like a snug pair of speedos; "Sandbar Caviar" wafts and sways with island waves as gentle arpeggios ebb and flow creating harmonies and cosmic textures while "Inland Island" adjusts our seats to a horizontal position with its snaking bassline and spacious percussion gradually opening into a heavenly vocal and guitar lead that's tantamount to transcendental.

Review: After 20 years in the lab, Austrian producer and DJ Conny Frischauf releases her debut EP for International Major Label. Made with a deep understanding of soundscapes and pop culture, the musical language of Frischauf breathes a magical and melancholic vibe - that transfers itself into the subconscious of the listener, without any comment. 4. Aerial Dance (6:19)
Review: Surely one of the finest record labels operating out of Russia right now, Udacha welcomes Gamayun back for a second time to admirably dive into the particular spirit that surrounds the label. Somewhere between loose-fit soulful house grooves you might hear on Downbeat and a more mystical, far-out spirit, this mysterious producer is a dab hand at weaving a particularly enchanting spell. The jazzy fluidity of "C-Music" could easily sit alongside some of Vakula's more wayward works, while "Aerial Dance" pirouettes off into an abstract rhythmic space that truly stimulates even as it confuses. Records this fresh-sounding don't roll around every day.
