Review: 2016 sees Coyote arrive at a decade of posing the question Is It Balearic? Replicating the compilation shaped celebrations surrounding their fifth anniversary, the landmark is noted with this fine 2CD collection. The compiling skills of Balearic chieftain Max Essa are called on for the first disc selections, with Coyote taking care of business on the second for a fine horizontally-minded celebration of all things Balearic encompassing 22 tracks. Tempos nudge back and forth, different vibes coming to the fore along the way as a dash of steel drum is replaced by forthright synth glistens and upright basslines. Legends mingle alongside future heroes, Foolish Felix and Baldelli impressing as much as Last Waltz and Clandestino. As the end nears, up pops Prins Thomas's classic Diskomiks of Downtown Party Network. Here's to another ten years Is it Balearic?

Review: Since the release of his acclaimed 2016 album Animal, Fakear has rocketed towards the higher echelons of underground electronic music. It's a sign of his rapid rise that All Glows feels like one of the most hotly anticipated albums of the year. Happily, we can report that it's another lucid and melodious gem, with the French producer once again prioritizing attractive synthesizer melodies, manipulated samples, imaginative beat programming and atmospheric chord sequences. As with previous excursions, he's opted for a balance of attractive, radio-friendly songs (think quirky, off-kilter synth-pop and drowsy electronic/acoustic fusion, featuring a range of guest vocalists), hazy interludes and inspired instrumentals.

Review: Brothers Simon and Robin Lee have long excelled at the album format, delivering occasional sets that ripple with impressive musicality, sinewy strings, cozy downtempo moods and upbeat dancefloor moments. Body of One, their fourth full length (their first dropped on Nuphonic back in 1997), continues this trend, offering a compelling trip through the pair's myriad influences. After opening with a sweaty post-punk thumper ("Prisoner of Your Love"), we're variously treated to Italo-influenced vintage house ("Magic Touch"), rubbery disco-funk ("Freak For Your Love"), Arthur Russell-influenced tropical downtempo pop ("Caruso's Monkey House"), dreamy Balearica ("Floating World") and string-laden gorgeousness. As for the title track, it sounds like So-era Peter Gabriel.

Review: Theo Conrad (better known for his work under the Paxton Fettel alias) has long been one of Greta Cottage Workshop's most intriguing artists. His first full-length for the Devon imprint, Everything Stays The Same, inhibited similar territory to the classic deep house/downtempo/soul/jazz fusion of fellow West Country dwellers The Rurals. This follow-up is, if anything, even better. Described by the label as "instrumental contemporary jazz-funk", the album sees Conrad combining loose jazz breaks and jazzy synths with the kind of rich grooves, fireside textures and dreamy electronics more often found in vintage deep house productions. It's a formula that results in a string of brilliant tracks.

Review: In our eyes, it is no exaggeration to claim that Finis Africae's recent reissues on Japan's EM have been partly response for the recent resurrection of Balearic, exotica, and deeply textured ambient music. The last three reissues on EM have all seen great success in terms of copies sold and feedback from game-changers such as the Mood Hut mandem, and the label's close relationship with Honest Jon's gives this music an even higher send of cultural relevance to the scene of today. Amazonia was first released in 1990 on Musica Sin Fin, and it very much sounds like it was made yesterday; this is timeless music that has the ability to please just about any ear, or any sort of digger. Containing gentle beats and harmonic patterns, Juan Alberto Arteche managed to create a world of his own, where time and space is lost, and the melodies and rhythms take us back to a primeval state. Yes, we like this a hell of a lot. Contender for leftfield reissue of the year? Perhaps, and it's only February!

Review: Something of a departure for this soulful Ninja Tune troubadour, this stripped down and spare record essentially does exactly what it says on the tin,in all forms except being quite as cheerful as the club setting suggests - this is a collection of blues ditties written with almost puritanically obsessive zeal in that idiom and put down at home by Fink at home in Berlin with only a guitar, an amp and a few microphones. In stripping down his songwriting to the bare essentials, the gritty vitality of his approach reaps rich rewards, arriving at what is unquestionably his finest work yet - a soulful, heartfelt and understated record that plays to his strengths without any of the trappings of studio trickery, and expands from its minimal modus operandi with power and impact.

Review: That an album spends a relatively long time in gestation is not necessarily a bad thing, nor a mark of its quality. Fontan, the Swedish duo formed of Johan Melin and Jesper Jarold, released their second album 'Winterhwila' back in 2009. Their self-titled third full-length shows that its long period of development and perfection has benefitted it, and the band, greatly. Fontan is a record of widescreen psychedelic hypnotics, with lilts of space-age kraut-rock, ambient, hip-hop beats and cosmic disco with an impeccable kaleidoscopic backdrop of production. Overall, it's a pretty flawless album and undoubtedly one of the finest released this year.

Review: If you were judging Kieran Hebden's 11th Four Tet studio album merely on the way it's presented, you'd immediately think he'd spent the last two years immersed in early '90s ambient house albums. While it's unlikely he's done that, it's fair to say that New Energy does owe a debt to classic electronica sets from that period. For all the exotic instrumentation and subtle nods to post-dubstep "aquacrunk" experimentalism and chiming, head-in-the-clouds sunrise house, the album feels like a relic of a lost era. That's not meant as a criticism - New Energy is superb - but it is true that his choice of neo-classical strings, gentle new age melodies, sweeping synthesizer chords and disconnected vocal samples would not sound out of place on a Global Communication album.

Review: Trevor Jackson's Pre- imprint is a bottomless pit of lust and wonder, providing the scene with nothing but inspiration - each and every damn time a new 12" drops onto our shelves. From is one of his many personal projects, most likely constructed here and there, over the course of a decade. The one and only thing you have to worry about is that this is a wonderful ambient album with many external influences and sonic crevices which filter off into unknown territories. With electronics at its core, YOU manages to linger between countless different genres and sub-genres, even stepping into hip-hop / downtempo on "Aquilegia", one of our choice cuts, or even on the supremely euphoric waves of "Delphinium". In fact, this whole LP feels like a dose of something powerful... what was that drink that DJ Screw loved to take, anyone?

Review: The latest missive from Trevor Jackson's label, Pre-, is another previously unreleased archive project from the man himself. Jackson recorded the material contained on the album between 1994 and 1997, when he was best known for producing dusty, sample-heavy hip-hop beats as the Underdog. Understandably, roughly half of You boasts the blazed, head-nodding swing of dope hip-hop drums, cleverly combined with textured samples of acoustic guitars and other vaguely Balearic instrumentation. The other half is more experimental in tone, with Jackson variously touching on post-rock, new age and folksy ambience. Most importantly, it's all hugely entertaining.

Review: Funkstorung have been releasing acid-driven techno since the mid 1990's and although they've kept a below-commercial status over the last few years, they certainly haven't gone anywhere. Germany's Monkeytown welcomes them back to the surface of the scene with their latest LP, a fourteen-track journey through vast planes of electronica and sparse bass explorations. Compared to their older material, tracks like "IATC", "So Simple" featuring Jamie Lidell, and "CHNNL" are considerably softer and more pensive, opting instead to delve into your mind by means of melody and soulfulness rather than brute beat anger. A breath of fresh air!

Review: Apart from having one of the best and most singular names in electronic dance music, The Future Sound Of London have been one of the pillars of modern UK dance music, pushing through a mixture of house, techno, and breaks since the early 1990s - and, in fact, some of their tunes like "Papua New Guinea" are still getting regular play time in clubs today. While they have released a huge amount of music over the last 25 years, they've got an equally vast amount of unreleased gold in their treasure chest, a collection of tracks that have seen the light of day thanks to the present Archived series. This week it's time for the series' eighth instalment, another twelve unmissable bundles of electronic delight. However, this is a lot more than just a compilation, and the tunes work their fine mixture of melodies, breaks and electronic beats into a sublime collection of sounds. If you're into vast and explorative music with a cutting-edge, you needn't look any further.

Review: The legendary Future Sound Of London have finally started dropping their Environments series on vinyl format, which will no doubt please the countless numbers of FSOL junkies out there! These sessions, the present title being the penultimate in a series of five, have been long sought after and they have been pivotal in shaping the sound of today's electronic dance music. Fifteen tracks in total here and the interesting thing about this album is the fact that it can be heard either as single tracks or as one developing and morphing wall of sound. All but one of these tracks, "Murmurations", are from way back and haven't seen the light of day, so get listening and indulge yourself in some pioneering sounds!

Review: Efficient Space's latest essential release draws together tracks from the personal cassette and DAT archives of pianist and experimental composer Sebastian Gandera (real name Eric Morin), who released a handful of albums on obscure, tape-only labels in the late 1980s and early '90s. The vast majority of the beautiful, poignant and surprisingly immediate music was recorded during the musician's university days, with Morin recording straight to tape in his dorm room. There are a few synthesizer and organ works with more complex arrangements - think moody ambient chords, synth double bass and occasional percussive elements - but for the most part what you get is one man, a piano keyboard and oodles of emotion. Given the quality of his compositions, you really don't need anything else.

Review: ** Repress ** Having distinguished themselves with a series of superb retrospective releases highlighting the work of Leon Lowman, Gigi Masin and Joan Biblioni, Amsterdam label Music From Memory deviate from the path somewhat with his long overdue Gaussian Curve album. Ask yourself what would happen when a elderly Venetian who specialises in sublime ambient music spends a weekend holed up in a Redlight district studio with two of his biggest, most musically gifted fans. The superb Clouds is the answer, with 'Young' Marco Sterk and Jonny Nash following Masin's lead on an eight track exercise in sumptuous, calming composition. The wait has truly been worth it.
