Gate Expander for Sweet Sixteen mkII.

This is an expander, brings 8 gate inputs for the Sweet Sixteen mkII.

The panel is reversible, so jacks & buttons can be in the left or right side.

The orientation of the 10 pin ribbon cable is marked by the 'do not plug power here!' legend on the PCB, so it could be with the red stripe facing that in both GESS and Sweet Sixteen mkII modules.

Notes: This is an expander for Bartender and Barback, enabling CV control of the level of the send bus of up to 8 channels.

Each section of four jacks has a cable to connect to the mixer modules. To get 4 channels to work with Barback you want to connect it to the last Barback in the chain of two. It will then pass along channels 3 & 4 to the next Barback.

Notes: When patching, you might feel inspired to add an effect mid patch - but how do you audition your new sound compared to the baseline, without a lot of continuous plugging and unplugging? Notes: The Man-Machine Interface, or MMI, is a passive touch and pressure sensitive controller which allows the user to direct CV and audio signals at will. The MMI consists of three input/output jacks, and five body contact surfaces in glorious gold.

The zig-zag body contacts correspond to the input/output jacks, with the top zig-zag connecting to the top jack, the middle zig-zag connecting to the middle jack, and the lower zig-zag connecting to the lower jack. The spiral patterns in between the zig-zags are comprised of the two adjacent jacks, so the upper spiral is comprised of the upper and middle jack, while the lower spiral is comprised of the middle and lower jack.

In order to operate the MMI, the user can touch any two points with their fingers, patch cables, a piece of fruit or vegetable, or any other conductive substance or object, in order to complete the connection. The degree of contact made with the MMI, and the resistance of the object completing the circuit, will determine the output that is sent along the circuit. For instance, if a user were to patch a VCO into the top jack, and patch the MMI into a filter in the middle jack, the VCO will be sent to the filter when the topmost zig-zag and lower zig-zag are connected by two fingers, for instance.

But how about the spirals? The spirals offer a way to make a connection with one finger. Using the example from before, the connection will instantly complete when the user touches the upper spiral pattern. Using this principle, it becomes possible to use the MMI in unusual and interesting ways, such as a rudimentary keyboard, a drum controller, a switch and any other number of weird and exciting purposes.

It is also possible to combine several MMI - using two different MMI, it is possible to reach across one zig-zag to another zig-zag, in order to make a different connection, or to place a particularly long vegetable across all the contacts just to see what will happen. The MMI is an unusual patching system for the experimental musician, and lends itself well to all manner of experimentation and weird instruments.

The MMI can bleed a tiny bit of signal when using sharp VCO waves like square waves, while other sounds like sine waves will have softer responses. This can easily be corrected with amplification or attenuation as needed.

The MMI takes up 4HP and is skiff friendly, and is also suitable for installing in external boxes as a passive control unit. You can combine any number of MMI to create increasingly complex keyboard-like arrangements, drum pad matrixes or advanced switch systems.

Notes: With the STOMP-IO module, you can integrate guitar effect pedals and similar devices into your AE modular system! For output (send) and input (return) return there is a mono minijack socket; two minijack to 1/4" socket adapters are included as effect pedals usually work with the latter ones. Send and return levels can be controlled with separate knobs.

Notes: In recent years, stereo signal paths have increasingly found their way into the wonderful world of Eurorack synthesis - so naturally, utilities should follow suit. Introducing psATT, a simple solution to a problem you might not even realise you had. Far from just useful as an attenuator for audio sources in mixdowns, the psATT can also be used to bring stereo audio signals down to more manageable levels (such as line level), attenuate multiple signals simultaneously (like increasing the modulation depth of two LFO's at the same time! It's like having two hands, but with one hand!) and is even normalled, so if you only have a mono signal, the attenuated signal will be present at both outputs. That's what utility is all about!

There's not much else to say, except that it's passive, and draws no power - and it looks very classy in black and gold; and it's also only 2hp.

Notes: The 2CVADD-HQ is a dual precision adder especially for adding 1V/octave (pitch-controlling) CVs. This makes it possible e.g. to transpose a sequence. Compared to general purpose CV mixers (like POLAMIX), this module does the summing of the CVs very precise (within a few millivolts), so the desired pitch is not affected.

The module offers three CV inputs for each of the both units; the first unit has an additional fourth input where the CV is subtracted - meaning "transposition downwards".

If you would like to have transposition buttons to shift by one or two octaves (or a free offset), take a look at the CVADDER-HQ module.

Notes: XMIX is a swiss knife for signal mixing and attenuating, offering four(!) mixers and two attenuators in a 1U module. It is designed especially with very small AE systems in mind.

Notes: The DIODEFILTER is an adaption of the well-known diode ladder filter that became most popular by Roland's TB-303 bassline. And here it is for the AE modular!

Notes: TRS Split - CV/Audio signal distributor

TRS Split is a multipurpose CV and audio signal distribution module. It has three 3.5 mm TRS (tip/ring/sleeve - stereo) jacks and six ordinary 3.5 mm mono jacks.

It contains 3 identical sections set up as following:

Upper jack carries the tip signal
Middle jack carries the stereo/dual signal
Lower jack carries the ring signal

Each section can either split a stereo signal into two mono signals or join two mono signals into one stereo signal. The module does not have any active components and does not need a power supply.

Use cases:

When you plug a stereo signal carried by a stereo (TRS) cable into the middle jack, you receive two separate mono signals by plugging in a mono (TS) cable in the upper jack to carry the left signal and a mono (TS) cable in the lower jack to carry the right signal. That way you can attack an "AUX" cable such as from your smartphone to your modular.

Or the other way around: Send two separate mono signals by plugging in a mono (TS) cable in the upper jack to carry the left signal and a mono (TS) cable in the lower jack to carry the right signal. Receive a stereo signal at the middle jack to be used with a stereo (TRS) cable.

Converting from stereo to dual mono and back allows you to alter the two sides of a stereo signal with different effects/filters.

Some tuners such as the Korg NTS-2 accept inputs to tune two oscillators combined in one 3.5 mm stereo jack. With one splitter you can easily feed two VCO signals into such a tuner.

Switching sides

Two splitters can be used to switch tip and ring (left and right): Plug in a stereo cable in the middle jack of the first section. Connect mono cables to the upper and lower jack of the first section. Then connect the upper mono cable of the first section to the lower mono jack of the second section and the lower mono cable of the first section to the upper mono jack of the second section. The signals are switched. Plug a stereo cable in the middle of the second splitter and you're good to go.

Hint: This also works for MIDI signals. If you use MIDI over minijack, there are two standards A and B - some manufacturers use A some B - thus not all connections are working. Now you can easily switch between the standards using the TRS Split.

Note: The MIDI input of the DROID X7 automatically detects A and B, so there is no switching necessary. The MIDI output of the X7 can be set to A or B with a switch on the back of the module.

Stereo multiple setup

If you have a separate multiple in your modular, you can use the TRS-SPLIT to create a 1:2 stereo multiple as follows:

Plug a stereo cable in the middle jack of section 1, patch the mono cable from the upper jack into section 1 of your multiple (e.g. a 3/3/3 multiple) and feed two of the outputs back into the upper jacks of section 2 and 3. Do the same with the mono cable coming from the lower jack of section 1 going into the second section of a 3/3/3 multiple and patch two cables back into the lower jacks of section 2 and 3 of the TRS Split. Now the middle jacks of section 2 and 3 both carry the stereo signal.

Notes: TRS Tool - Stereo/Dual CV/Audio/MIDI signal multipurpose module

TRS Tool is a multipurpose CV and audio signal distribution module for working with 3.5 mm stereo jacks (tip/ring/sleeve). These jacks are common for stereo audio but also for MIDI.

The TRS TOOL has no active components and does not need a power supply. It contains 3 different sections set up as following from top to bottom:

TRS Split
The upper jack carries the tip signal
The middle jack carries the stereo/dual signal
The Lower jack carries the ring signal

Use cases:

When you plug a stereo signal carried by a stereo (TRS) cable into the middle jack, you receive two separate mono signals by plugging in a mono (TS) cable in the upper jack to carry the left signal and a mono (TS) cable in the lower jack to carry the right signal. That way you can attack an "AUX" cable such as from your smartphone to your modular.

Or the other way around: Send two separate mono signals by plugging in a mono (TS) cable in the upper jack to carry the left signal and a mono (TS) cable in the lower jack to carry the right signal. Receive a stereo signal at the middle jack to be used with a stereo (TRS) cable.

Converting from stereo to dual mono and back allows you to alter the two sides of a stereo signal with different effects/filters.

TRS Quad Multiple

Multiply a stereo signal. Four TRS jacks to be used with stereo minijack cables.

Use cases:

You could use this to multiply the signal for headphones - listen to patches together.

Or create sends - route one (or two) stereo signals to effects and use the third one as dry signal going to the mixer.

Experimental: multiply a MIDI signal to two or three receivers: NOTE: depending on the output power of the MIDI sender and the power draw of the MIDI receivers this might or might not work. MIDI uses a current of typically 5 mA instead of voltage levels for data transmission. So when you attach too many devices to one output the current might not be enough to drive all of them. So this is strictly spoken not covered by the MIDI standard, but might work anyway.

A/B Swapper
The bottom section of the module consists of two connected TRS jacks.
Whatever signal applies to the tip in jack A will be routed to the ring in jack B.
Whatever signal applies to the ring in jack A will be routed to the tip in jack B.

Use cases:

Switch the left and right side of a stereo audio signal.

Switch between MIDI standard A and B: If you use MIDI over minijack, there's two standards A and B - some manufacturers use A some B - thus not all connections are working. Now you can easily switch between the standards using the TRS Split.

Note: The MIDI input of the DROID X7 automatically detects A and B, so there is no switching necessary. The MIDI output of the X7 can be set to A or B with a switch on the back of the module.

Notes: Tilt is the first in Laine's series of core modules, which will take cues from the main product line and strip back the features so both the module width and cost can be shrunk dramatically.

Comprising an 'Ambler' style tilt EQ network similar to the 'Stilts' topology, Tilt allows simultaneous cut and boost of low and high frequencies using a single control.

Tilt control circuits are known for the transparency of their cut and boost curves, coupled with the inherent emphasis gained from cutting one end of the frequency spectrum whilst boosting at the opposite end.

It sounds pretty good on all audio source material but is especially suited to tracking drums, guitar and lead, or manipulating effects sends and returns.

With the control knob at 12o'clock the sound passed is neutral. Turning the control knob clockwise will boost high and cut low frequencies pivoting from a fixed mid-range point. Turning the control anti-clockwise below 12 o clock will in turn boost low frequencies and cut the highs.

In addition to the EQ there is a soft clipping network which will begin to saturate signals over 15 volts peak to peak.

Tilt uses the same high quality OPA op amps, Alpha pots and ENIG PCBs as found in our main product line.

Notes: The CVSHIFTER module is the AE version of the well-known analogue shift register modules that are around in the modular world since a long time. It works like this: The CV input is sampled with each trigger input signal and this CV is sent to the CV 1 output; at the same time, all CV outputs 1-4 are shifted by one.

Compared to the "classic" circuits, this module is digital based and therefore doesn't suffer from drift as some analogue ASRs and S&Hs do. The result is, that you can e.g. control the pitch of up to four oscillators which is a first step into polyphony.

The CVSHIFTER module offers three modes:

Classic: Each trigger shifts the CV outs by one position, the new CV goes to output CV 1
Cycle: Each trigger sends the CV to the next output channel, restarting at out 1; additionally a gate signal at the according output.
Random: The CVs are sent in random order to one of the four outputs, plus a gate at the according output.

Notes: Drawing inspiration from the MMI Maxima, the MMI Helios is intended as a middle ground between the gestural control surface of the Maxima and the fingertip control of the smaller MMI.

Less density, but a much higher degree of patch control is the key point of the Helios, which complements other MMI devices very well, and can be joined with other Helios (Helii?) to form larger and creative control surfaces.

The design is greatly simplified compared to the original MMI, with only two I/O jacks - either can function as input and output, and their interaction with each other is determined by touching both plates simultaneously to form a connection, or in cooperation with other MMI devices.

Available in a "right" and "left" version - one is an exact mirror image of the other, which makes it suitable for having two units adjacent to one another.

Notes: You've got triggers, gates, clocks and other such binary signals that you want to mix - but you'd much prefer if they did not interact and interrupt each other!

What you need is OR logic - and this passive OR logic in 2hp makes it easy to mix up to four signals in one, and even allows you to switch any off the signals on or off at will. Your trigger sequencing will become truly next level.

Notes: The classic ADSR envelope with CV control for all parameters

The ADSR module offers the classic four-stage envelope (Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release) that is not only loopable (patch the end output into gate input) but also accepts CV control over each of the stages! For the time values (A, D, R) the value set by the knob can be increased to five times the duration by the corresponding CV value. For the Sustain value the knob and CV value are simply added.

Notes: You want less sound, and you want it fast. You want a mute that doesn't take up any power, a mute that doesn't take up a lot of space, and a mute that accepts three signals. You want a mute that's nice and clicky, and a mute that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Notes: The module was named Kuzmin Filter in the past as a tribute to the developer of the Polivoks, Vladimir Kuzmin. For certain reasons, the module will now be called GRUNGE Filter (due to the sound), with the circuitry remaining unchanged.

The Polivoks was a Russian synth that was produced between 1982 and 1990.This module is the AE version of the filter that gave the Polivoks a unique, rough sound.

Beyond the basic design, this filter offers some additional features:

Two different resonance characteristics, hard and soft
An FM function, that adds the input signal to the modulation of the filter
An optional overdrive for the output, making the sound even more rough and untamed.

Notes: Two bipolar LEDs allow you to visualize your voltages as they swing between positive and negative, as well as their level of intensity, without affecting the signal you input.

It's another Herzlich Labs release: the 2hp stereo Attenuverter. Two channels of connected attenuversion, allowing you to fully and smoothly invert any signals you plug in - turn negative to positive, turn phase to antiphase, and find all the variations in between.

With the usual pleasantly tactile sliding pot, the sAttenuverter is both performance friendly and inspiring to use. Extremely suitable for linked mono signals and stereo alike, it will feel right at home in the increasingly popular stereo setups in modular.

Notes: A (buffered) mult is an essential item in every rack. This buffered DC-coupled module will fulfill all your audio and CV multiplying needs.

Notes: The Om is a slim, passive 2hp LPG with characterful resonance. Taking notes from its bigger brother, the Omen, the Om offers similarly beautiful resonant LPG action in half the size and skiff-friendly depth.

In a convergence of old-school LPG design and more modern components, the Om boasts a single -6dB resonant filter, custom hand-built vactrol and no less than three cutoff modes designed to inspire your next sounds.

Although the little brother of the Omen, the Om brings a distinct sound to the table. Do not mistake the Om for an Omen sawn in half, as they will both provide musically interesting and useful sounds to your setup.

Exactly as with the Omen, care has been taken to create a circuit with near-zero audio bleed and the best possible characteristics for a passive LPG. Of course, many of the natural features of vactrols remain, such as subtle memory effect when engaging the vactrol for long periods.

Finally, you receive maximum blinkenlights as an LED on the front panel simulates the action of the vactrol, so you'll always know what's going on under the hood. No collection of fancy LPG's is complete without the Om(en)!

Notes: The Herzlich Man Machine Interface - a beloved instrument, but what if there was even more of it? An MMI with more than one dimension? An MMI arranged in a manner of... matrix?

With operation identical to it's little brother, the MMI Matrix allows the user to patch inputs to outputs by connecting zig-zagged patterns together with fingers, fruits, cables, pizza slices or any other conductive source. The labyrinth patterns will immediately connect the zig-zags immediately adjacent, whether above and below, or on each side. Furthermore, the two labyrinths within labyrinths will connect ALL adjacent inputs and outputs, which may lead to beautiful disasters or otherworldly insights.

As with its predecessor, the MMI Matrix is fully touch and pressure sensitive, reacting to the amount of pressure exerted, the amount of skin connecting, and the resistive quality of your body. Incredibly easy to perform with, the MMI Matrix offers new and far more advanced ways to patch your performances, whether CV, triggers or audio signals. Create reverb swells that vary between different types of reverb, use multiple fingers and labyrinth patterns to mix trigger signals into complex polyrhythms or create beautiful chords by combining various pitch inputs with a chord oscillator. The MMI Matrix also integrates very well with it's little brother, so there is absolutely no need to hold back!

Oh, and as always, it uses NO power! But it will take up 10hp of space in your system. A fair deal!

Notes: This is an envelope follower based on a classic module from the seventies but with some improvements to suit modern needs.

The IN signal is bifurcated to the envelope follower circuit and also to a THRU output, so the original signal is also available for external processing.

The envelope follower has three controls, a switch to select response time (fast, medium, slow), a pot to adjust GATE threshold and a pot to adjust the envelope CV level.

This little module will help you shape the timbre and/or the level envelopes of your sounds. From dynamic envelope filtering to compressor like side chaining there are lots of possibilities to mangle your audio.

Notes: As the name suggests this module can produce sub frequencies of -1 and -2 octaves relative to the square wave signal provided at the input jack.

But this is not just a simple SUB generator. It also has a little mixer that will let you add different levels of -1 and -2 octave signals to the original square wave. You can select the -2 octave signal to be a square wave or a pulse wave.

The module has individual outputs for the mixed signal, the -1 octave and the -2 octave.

This little modules can produce enough timbral variation to make you bass sound exciting.

A-138s is a simple but useful 4-in-2 mixing tool. It has four inputs available. Each input is equipped with an attenuator (Level) and a panning control that is used to distribute the signal to the left and right output. Beyond stereo mixing it is equally suited to create variable parallel routings. For example: Any of the four inputs may be routed in variable intensity to feed two filters.

You may regard the A-138s as a smaller version of the A-138m Matrix Mixer.

Inputs and outputs are DC coupled, i.e. the module can be used for the mixing of control signals too.

Notes: Module A-130-4 contains four linear VCAs with a common level control section for all four VCAs. The SPRINGREVERB module brings the unique sound of this quite old (introduced in the 60's) technique for creating reverbs to the AE modular.

The reverb works by sending the audio signal to a set of 3 springs; at the other end of the springs the sound is picked up by a transducer, converting the mechanical movement of the springs back into an electrical signal. When the audio signal arrives at the end of the springs, the waves are reflected several times; these reflections create the reverb sound.

The spring "tank" (a metal box containing the springs and transducers, size approx. 24 x 9 x 3.5 cm) is connected externally by a cable.

The product contains all components: The module itself, the spring tank and the connection cable.

Note: The sound of a spring reverb is quite unique and has a strong vintage character; if you are looking for a more "clean", natural sounding reverb please take a look at the MULTIFX module.

Standard Mode - Send two channels into your USB device and receive two channels from USB.

Insert Mode - Send two channels to your USB device and get a copy of the sent signal in the outputs.

Toggle between the modes via a pair of jumpers on the back. The USB-B to USB-A cable is provided with the module. Why use the cutting edge USB-B? I felt the jacks were way more sturdy than mounting USB-C jacks vertically.

Notes: Module A-130-2v is composed of two identical voltage controlled amplifiers (VCA). Each VCA has a manual gain control (also named Initial Gain) and a control voltage input with attenuator. The character of the control scale can be switched to linear or exponential. All inputs and outputs are DC coupled. Consequently the VCAs can be used to process both audio and control voltages (e.g. for voltage control of the level of LFO or envelope signals). The signal input has no attenuator available but is capable to process up to 16Vpp signals (i.e. -8V...+8V) without distortion. For the processing of higher levels an external attenuator (e.g. A-183-1) is recommended.

The amplification range is 0...1. Even with a higher external control voltage the amplification remains at 1 (kind of "amplification clipping" at 1).

A-130-2v is the slim version of module A-132-3 and offers essentially the same features. But the distances between the controls are smaller and rubberized small-sized knobs are used. In return the front panel has 4 HP only which is half the width of the A-132-3. The module is primarily planned for applications where only limited space is available.

3 blocks of 2-channel attenuverting mixers, using dual concentric pots. Each channel can be switched to mix with the subsequent channel, allowing for 2-2-2, 4-2, 6 mix configurations.

With nothing plugged into an input, an offset is normalled to that channel. The inner knobs control the A inputs, while the outer knobs control the B inputs.

CV input 2 - CV input for either unidirectional or bidirectional attenuation. When an input cable isn't plugged into this jack, a 5v reference signal will be used.
Switch - toggles CV input 2 between unidirectional and bidirectional attenuation.

Notes: Module A-147-5 contains four voltage controlled low frequency oscillators (VCLFO) with triangle waveform outputs. All LFOs share a common frequency control. Each of the LFOs 2, 3 features a Delta control which is used to shift the frequency of the LFO in question up or down. With the Delta controls at center positions the frequencies of all LFOs are roughly the same. To control the frequencies by external control voltages four CV inputs are available which follow roughly the 1V/oct standard.

Control F: manual control of the frequency for all four LFOs
Control Delta F2, F3 and F4: manual control of the frequency shift up/down for the LFO in question

Application examples:

Generation of four triangle modulation signals with a common frequency control for all LFOs and individual controls for the frequency deviation of each LFO, manually adjustable and controllable by external control voltages
Generation of modulation signals for polyphonic FM/PWM applications. For this the four CV inputs are connected to the same control voltages which are used to control the frequencies of the corresponding VCOs. That way each LFO follows the frequency of the associated VCO with the possibility to control the frequency of all VCOs (control F) and the frequency deviations (Delta F controls). For the simultaneous modulation depth control the Quad VCA module A-130-4 is recommended.
Generation of complex modulation signals by summing up the outputs (e.g. by means of a mixer module A-138n / A-138i / A-138j)

Technical notes:

The level of the triangle outputs is about +/-5V (10Vpp)
The manually adjustable frequency ranges from about 0.025 Hz (about 40 seconds) to about 50 Hz with the delta controls of LFOs 2, 3 and 4 about center position
The frequency deviations adjusted by the delta controls are about +/-1:5. Example: with 1 Hz in center position the frequency shift ranges from about 0.2 Hz in position -5 to about 5 Hz in position +5 (1 Hz/5 = 0.2 Hz, 1 Hz*5 = 5 Hz).
The manual frequency controls and the control voltage inputs have an exponential control behavior
With external control voltage the max. frequency is about 150 Hz, the minimum frequency
The scale of the CV inputs is roughly 1V/oct (not adjustable)
The CV inputs are normalled from top to bottom. Provided that only socket CV1 is patched CV1 controls the frequencies of all four LFOs.
When each CV input is patched to it's own control voltage each LFO is controlled individually by it's own CV. In this case CV1 controls only the frequency of LFO1.
Internally the rectangle outputs are available at four terminals (typ level +/-10V or 20Vpp). If required they can be wired to four sockets of a DIY breakout module made by the user, 1k protection resistors are recommended to avoid short circuits. If lower levels are required passive attenuators (voltage dividers) may be used.
Internally is even an (unbufferd) triangle sum signal available. For this each of the four triangle outputs is simply connected to the sum output terminal via a 47k resistor. This output has high impedance and should be buffered or amplified to avoid level drop when the load changes (e.g. by means of an A-180-3 or A-180-4 or A-183-3).
By changing the values of the capacitors in the LFO circuits even other frequency ranges are possible (e.g. Quad VCO to form kind of a cloud VCO). Pay attention that the accuracy of the CV input scales is not sufficient for precise 1V/oct VCO applications. The 1V/Oct scales cannot be adjusted and the circuits are not temperature compensated.

Notes: DRONX is a special mixer designed especially for the DRONE38 module; if has 6 input channels (so you can connect two DRONE38 modules) and offers some sound processing capabilities: A tone control with bass and treble control, a distortion, and finally a dual delay with different algorithms. Two insert points allow to add up to two more audio effects to the internal signal chain. Together with the DRONE38 module(s) you get a quite nice drone synth for dense, dark soundscapes.

Of course, it can be used with any other sound sources!

Notes: This filter is based on the classic 2600 from the seventies and uses the LM3900 Norton opamp chip.
