Studio mixers

A studio mixer is an essential part of any hardware music setup, allowing you to combine all of your sound sources into a stereo signal. There’s a lot more to it than just summing sounds, however; a good mixer will allow you to connect any source – instruments, microphones, line-level stereo signals – and most will allow you to process the sound, applying EQ and effects before setting levels and panning sounds into your mix. Once you’ve chosen how many channels you need, you’ll find lots of more advanced features. A lot of studio mixers now include built-in digital effects as well as audio interface features, allowing you to hook the mixer up to your computer and record individual channels or the main mix. Top brands like Mackie and Yamaha produce a huge range of mixers in every size you can imagine, meaning there’s something for complete beginners as well as professionals.

Korg SoundLink MW2408 24-Channel Hybrid Studio Mixer (black)
Cat: 762144 Rel: 29 Jul 20

Hybrid analogue & digital mixer
Notes: 24-channel flagship version of Korg's hybrid mixer, combining analogue and digital features designed by mixer royalty Greg Mackie and Peter Watts. Supremely flexible with great sound.

Supplier notes:
A mixer should not only sound good. It should be very easy to use.

Korg has collaborated with the legendary mixer design team of Greg Mackie and Peter Watts to create hybrid/analog mixing consoles that make creative mixing easy. Both the 24- and 16-channel models give you instant analog control for live mixing with stunning sound quality and more musician-friendly features than the competition - paired with the power of high-quality digital where it counts.

Use a SoundLink and you discover all the typical Greg Mackie features that are unique to SoundLInk; hear your first live mix and discover why Peter Watts helped design legendary Trident consoles and then hundreds of high-end studio processors and preamps. Besides designing mixers, Greg Mackie has been mixing on them for over 40 years.

When you listen to the "White Album", Rhianna's "Rated R" and "Loud", "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" and literally hundreds of other familiar albums, you're listening to the legendary Trident mixing console sound. Peter Watts had an important role in Trident technology; he brings the same rich, warm preamp, EQ and dynamics quality to the products he designs today. HiVolt mic preamps give you the most headroom of any comparably-priced analog or digital mixer (16.5V internal voltage, even on stereo channels where other mixers skimp). They sound warm and musical.

It is the only small mixer that has Mute Groups. They let you instantly call up different combinations of channels for various groups on stage, different songs, sound checks, a solo acoustic number, a drum solo or different parts of a church service (choir, praise band, pastor. You get four Group options, each easily programmable and recallable.

Some musicians want to hear more of their own instrument or voice in their in-ear or floor monitor, a process that is complicated to change on other mixers. SoundLink's Musician's Phone feature provides one-knob boost of the complete left/right mix into the musician's individual track. Instead of having to change main mix settings or take up a bus, you have dedicated knobs for two musician's "more me" monitor mixes.

Instead of a generic digital effects processor chip, SoundLink mixers use a high-quality proprietary Korg custom chip that builds on all of Korg's multi-decade expertise: twenty four ultra-realistic digital effects. For example, all six reverb effects include an alternate "WARM" version - a touch veteran Korg users will tell you is very useful. Parameters of all effects can be tweaked, saved and recalled, and activated by an optional footswitch. Plus, you get test tone generators for use with the built-in 24-band Spectrum Analyzer that's another SoundLink exclusive in a mixer in this price range.

Digital processing and effects are frustrating if they're buried in some long, scrolling menu inside a menu. For EQ and other control features, and a row of individual L/R, AUX 1 and Aux 2 assign buttons for both Equalization and Dynamics makes mixing easier. SoundLink's Limiter, Compressor, Noise Gate are both effective without being harsh or exaggerated. Each has tweakable, recallable parameters. Coupled with a 31-band Spectrum Analyzer, our super-practical 31-band/9-band ParaGraphic EQ solves acoustical problems other small mixers can't handle.

Korg Volca Mix 4-Channel Analogue Performance Mixer
Cat: 675871 Rel: 26 Mar 18

Compact multi-function four-channel mixer
Notes: The Volca Mix is a four-channel analogue performance mixer that lets you construct a live setup combining multiple Volca units.

Volume faders are easy to control, plus crisp-sounding LO/HI CUT filters, and a master chain that radically transforms the sound. In addition to the sync function found on all Volcas, there are also DC output connectors that can supply power for up to three Volca units. Numerous functions to facilitate your on-stage Volca performances have been packed into a high-quality aluminium-panelled body, reminiscent of a high-end DJ mixer. The Volca Mix will unlock the maximum potential of the Volca series.

An analog mixer for performance:

The Volca Mix is a four-channel analog mixer with an intuitive interface and plenty of connectivity. It provides two mono inputs and one stereo input, perfect for connecting three Volca units. The jacks are mini-jacks, allowing you to make connections with just one stereo mini-cable from the headphone out of each Volca unit. The channel volumes use vertical faders that allow precise control. The gain can be boosted to adjust the mix balance, and mute buttons are also provided. Each channel is also equipped with a LO/HI CUT filter that lets you control the low and high frequency ranges with a single knob. The pristine, natural-sounding filters that you expect from analog gear give you complete control over the character of your sound.

Output and monitor capabilities for use on stage, plus stereo speakers for maximum portability:

The output section provides RCA stereo line outputs to ensure stable connection. There's a master volume with LED VU meter for adjusting the output level, as well as a headphone output that can be used simultaneously with the line output, providing a reliable monitoring environment on stage. Speakers are also built-in for excellent portability. The stereo speakers are placed at both sides of the front, and while compact, deliver SPL levels that are even greater than the built-in speakers on previous Volca units.

Powerful master chain:

The Volca Mix is equipped with master effects powered by all-analog circuitry. In addition to an expander that broadens a mono source into a stereo sound image, there's a dynamic range compressor that compresses the high-frequency range according to level changes of the low-frequency region, as well as a side chain effect that's indispensable for dance music. Use these to dynamically vary the mix, adding a professional feel to live performances with the Volca.

Connect an external effect unit for further variety:

The Volca Mix provides a stereo mini-jack send out and AUX in jack, and send level knobs for each channel. This allows you to use it with an external effect unit in a send/return connection. When used in conjunction with a unit such as the mini Kaoss pad 2S, you can also enhance your live performances using standard effects such as reverb, delay, filter, and break. The AUX in jack can also be used as a stereo input channel for a fourth Volca unit, an iOS app, or any other gadget, instrument, or device.

As the master of your Volca live setup:

The Volca Mix features an analog sync out jack that can easily be connected to many pieces of KORG gear for tempo sync, and also a play button and tempo knob to control that sync signal. By using the Volca Mix as the sync master device of your live setup, you can easily enhance your live performance, such as simultaneously playing sequences from multiple synced units, and combining mute and volume control to create performances that use your Volca units in even more ingenious ways.
