Mark William Lanegan - was an American Singer/Songwriter/author, and musician. First becoming prominent as the lead singer for the early grunge band Screaming trees, where he was close friends with Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, he was also known as a member of Queens of The Stone Age & The Gutter Twins with Afghan Whigs frontman Greg Dulli. He released 12 solo studio albums, as well as three collaboration albums with Isobel Campbell and two with Duke Garwood.

Sadly, Mark passed away 22nd February this year at home in Killarney, Ireland, just weeks away from this book being completed.

Numerous artists, including Eddie Vedder, Iggy Pop, Moby, John Cale, Sleaford Mods, Peter Hook, Nick Cave, Slash & Manic Street Preachers paid tribute. An obituary in The Guardian by Stevie Chick remembered him as "one of his generation's most soulful singers".

Iman Kakai-Lazell was born in Iran and moved to London, England at an early age. She studied at Central St Martins - Spatial Design and Chelsea College of Arts, specialising in Public Art.

Iman has had many exhibitions in New York & London, with a yearly solo residence at The Baltic in Borough - 2010-2016 - continuing till date in Amsterdam, London and New York - alongside her new home in the Lakes.

Notes: In celebration of the legendary 100 Club, a venue with as much character as the bands booked to play there, Ditto are publishing a book of anecdotal stories from its 75-year history. From the musicians who have played there through to the bar staff and the customers they served, each unique story adds to the legend and myth.

The 100 Club, launched in 1942 as the Feldman Swing Club, was frequented by GIs during the war, and by the stars of British and global jazz in the 1950s, including BB King and Muddy Waters. But it was in the 1970s that it became an iconic venue for the punk scene, hosting "the 100 Club Punk Special", an event which included the Sex Pistols, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Clash, Buzzcocks and The Damned. The event cemented punk as an idea and subculture.

It wasn't just incredible bands that emerged from this independent venue, but tribes of fans devoted to new ways of thinking. "100 Club Stories" will be published in spring, with various digital activations and events throughout the 75th anniversary year which runs until September 2018. The book will feature stories from everyone from club punters to internationally famous musicians, alongside archive imagery, much of it completely unseen prior to now.

Notes: Long before he made the documentary "Dope, Hookers And Pavement" about the early days of the Detroit hardcore punk scene, Otto Buj published Sold Out Fanzine from 1987 through 1990 with the help of his pals Trent, Stefan, Mikey, and Andy. It was arguably one of the smarter, more irreverent, and ambitious fanzines to come out of the whole mid-late '80s hardcore-punk-indie scene, with a focus on insightful, long-form interviews with some of the major players at the time (Henry, Ian, HR, Harley, Brannon, Pushead, Choke, etc.). From his modest beginnings in his home-city of Saint Petersburg, onto becoming a relatively hush-hush driving force of the international house underground with releases for the likes of Jimpster's Freerange Records, Emotional Response, Hell Yeah, Let's Play House, DFA, Bordello a Parigi et al, through busting the frontiers of live music with the crazy circuses of SPDSC and Kito Jempere Band, there's been very few moments of quiet in Kito's gleefully bumpy yet ever soul-fulfilling journey. An oddball and thrillingly witty object spanning the many facets of his intimate self and artistic persona, the win-some/lose-some nature of a DJ's life, as well as the pressure and release coming with exposing yourself to the limelight, but also the joys of being dubbed by your peers and unexpected spits in the face, 'A Book of Kito' is a thoroughly honest portray of a man telling his realities, hopes and anxieties, that huge, infectious smile slapped across the face as an indivisible trademark. A loud-spoken piece of anti-egotistic confession delivered in his own words, friendly and dynamic as his character, with enough humility to cool off the infinity pool of highfalutin leeches that regularly floods that thing called, "The Scene", Kito's anti-memoir has us surfing the good waves and channeling the positive vibes, as it washes the pains and disillusions away in constantly joyful fashion. Stacking as much energy as possible from these countless stories and fun-riddled anecdotes about life and music, fueled by the figures that keep him - and us all - ticking - best half, proud son, loyal friends, Kito Jempere serves up a lighthearted delight of a volume, tender and piquant as it gets. Keeping it fast, so doubt doesn't catch up.

Notes: These are the first and last sentences from Charbel Haber's latest offering, A Common Misunderstanding of the Speed of Light: a multi-media musing on the chronic and the chronological, the subversive nature of time. This combination of a record and book observes the slow passing of life and the illusion of retrogradation in his every day. Simply by documenting - via image, text and tune - Haber assigns value to everything that is cast in amber by this project. There's an acceptance and appreciation of the destitution he witnesses, it is an homage given in overlapping forms.

ACMOTSOL has two parts. The book, paperback in an embossed orange, features photographs and texts taken from Haber's personal digital diary spanning from 2020 to the start of 2022. Broken into six chapters - named for the six tracks on the record - the entries are an artist's log of sorts during a peculiar period of global hyper stagnation and navigating the aftermath of the Beirut explosions. The 96 pages highlight Haber's interest in decay, negative space and the temporality of the human condition. Instead of presenting the images and texts as they were originally paired online, they're reordered and recontextualized in the book. New connections are formed, as tenuous and fleeting as the content they surround. The images interrupt the texts in many instances, forcing pauses and inviting distraction.

At the centre of the book is a sudden burst of orange pages, with stylized pluckings of the text framing a QR-code that grants access to the record. With the brilliant orange covers and matching innards, pregnant with the music at the core, it's almost as if these central pages act as a way to turn the book inside out. There, the book's purpose is altered, fixated on a mirror image of itself. It forms a self-completing arc for the project, a loop.

ACMOTSO's second half is that mirrored album. Six tracks totalling just under 52 minutes. The music could be a continuation of his solo albums Of Palm Trees and Decompositions (2016) and It Ended Up Being a Good Day Mr. Allende (2012), an exploration into the expansiveness of seemingly simple loops of a lilting guitar. Careful electronic effects add dimensions or reground the listener. There's a swelling of sound, the illusion of the push of space before it retracts back into itself or fades into the distance. Much like the images and texts the music complements, the songs challenge the purity of cycles. Endings are beginnings, beginnings are endings or is everything just the middle? Haber is quietly and elegantly grappling with the troublesome act of place-making. In music, in words and in visual storytelling.

ACMOTSOL is a work that can be calming or disorienting, depending on what is requested of it. Similar to the way loops and cycles can signify both meditation and mania. The tendrils of Haber's past - his home of Beirut, fictional and real characters encountered, authors read, films watched, composers listened, walks taken - knit themselves together for a presentation of our immediate present. An evidence of a happening. A considered project of time.

Following Kingmaker's two highly acclaimed books on Genesis (Genesis: 1967 to 1975 - The Peter Gabriel Years and Genesis: 1975 to 2021 - The Phil Collins Years) and several other successful publications (including the autobiography of Marillion keyboardist Mark Kelly, Marillion, Misadventures & Marathons), A Mirror Of Dreams is the first of two books by Wild which provide the definitive account of the intertwined stories of the six bands which led the progressive rock revival: Marillion, IQ, Pallas, Pendragon, Solstice and Twelfth Night.

Since the beginning of its existence, the record has always been used by visual artists as a form of distribution for their sound practice. First experimented with by the early avant-garde movements, the role of these sound supports was later redefined in the context of the proliferation and hybridization of forms between sound and language.
While recording media such as discs or cassettes were used to document happenings, readings, and Fluxus concerts, these media also became a medium in their own right, used by artists to transmit their experiments.

Moreover, the current economic and technological context generated a keen interest in editorial and multiple art practices.

A-sides brings into focus on a network of actors linked to the scene of the Lake Geneva region—on the history of artistic encounters and exchanges generating sound productions. The produced works, as well as the methods of exploration of this international network, formed the basis of this anthology of artists' sound publications.

In this memoir, Harlem-born trumpeter Ahmed Abdullah recounts decades of national and international touring with the Sun Ra Arkestra and charts the rise of the New York loft jazz scene, offering a fascinating portrait of advanced music in Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan from the 1970s through the 1990s, including thrilling stories about the politically important Bed-Stuy venue The East and the author's tutelage under composer and long-time Archie Shepp collaborator Cal Massey. Along the way, Abdullah covers his spiritual development as a Buddhist, battles with addiction, tribulations as a father, lessons from Sun Ra and working life as an educator and cab driver. Trumpeter and educator Ahmed Abdullah was born in Harlem in 1947. An important figure in the New York loft jazz movement, in 1972 he formed a group called Abdullah, two years before joining the Sun Ra Arkestra, with whom he played for more than 20 years. He is a founding member of the bands Melodic Art-Tet, The Group and NAM, and of the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium. Abdullah is the music director at Sistas' Place in Brooklyn, and teaches music at the New School for Social Research in Manhattan and an elementary school in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn.

Amon Duul is one of the most important acts in psychedelic and progressive music of the 20th century. This is the story of their formative years (1968-72) and their unparalleled musical expression. Limited edition printing of 500 copies.

The German rock band Amon Duul II quickly rose to prominence in West Germany due to their energetic live performances and the pioneering debut album Phallus Dei in the late 60s. They were frontrunners in what would be termed Deutschrock or Krautrock, a loose and sprawling musical movement which included acts like CAN and Kraftwerk. The tension between Germany's past, present and future provided the energy for this movement, which had its own artists, record labels and fans.

The people of this movement worked mostly outside the sphere of the establishment and the commercial record labels and institutions, although the most economically viable acts would later be picked up by major companies. In many ways, this movement was in opposition to the current situation, to politics, society and music. They were looking for freedom, and the different paths leading there; one was through politics via anarchism, socialism or communism, towards a new society beyond traditional values and monetary power; another was spiritual, through artistic expression psychology and psychedelic drugs.

Notes: A 104 page autobiography book written By Anthony "BlakTony" Horton, The book exposes the micro-details of each member of the group, and gives insight into their humble beginnings from Detroit, and the movement the group created in reviving electro music.

Notes: In this book, the technical explanation of the nature of analog sound creation is followed by the story of its birth and its subsequent development by various designers, manufacturers and performers.

The individual components of analog sound creation are then examined in detail, with step by step examples of sound creation techniques. Then the modern imitative analog instruments are examined, again with detailed instructions for programming and using them. The book is completed with appendices listing the major instrument lines available, hints on values and purchasing, other sources of information and a discography of readily available recordings which give good examples of analog sound synthesis.

The CD which accompanies the book gives many examples of analog sound creation basics as well as more advanced techniques and of the abilities of the individual instruments associated with classical and with imitative analog sound synthesis.

Notes: Andrei Bely - The Princess & The Knights (James Ginzburg Translation)

Written between 1909 and 1915, this collection of poems by Russian symbolist master Andrei Bely is available in English translation for the first time. While loosely thematically linked, these psychedelic pieces create a kaleidoscopic and fragmented coherency out of the shattered stained glass of romantic tales of chivalric knights. This limited edition is a faithful recreation of the first edition, which was published in 1919 by Alkonost in St. Petersburg, and follows Bely's experimental typography. Bely used visual devices in his poetry as a musical score, guiding the reader's recitation, and is generally considered the first Russian poet to experiment with the layout of text, having perceived it as an essential dimension of the poetry itself.

Author Biography: Andrei Bely (1880-1934) was a Russian author, poet and essayist best known for his novel Petersburg, which was regarded by Vladimir Nabokov as one of the four greatest novels of the 20th century. Often associated with his symbolist peers, Bely's writing, with its colourful, mysticism inflected, and virtuosic prose and poetry is singular. Bely was a close follower of Rudolf Steiner, and while deeply influenced by him, Bely's personal syncretism gave rise to a metaphysical expression within his work that is distinct from Anthroposophy.

Notes: Any Colour You Like - The Dark Side Of The Moon On Vinyl is the result of Stefano Tarquini's lifelong quest and gathers together the 700 currently known variations of Pink Floyd's masterpiece on record. They are all there, from the first March 1973 UK edition with solid blue prism labels, to the most obscure pressings from Nicaragua and Mozambique and everything in between.

Each country has its entry with all known releases - test pressings, promotional copies, stock copies and miss-pressings, all clearly arranged in chronological order with all necessary specifications and complemented by a thousand images of labels and packaging details. The book deliberately refrains from a valuation of the various pressings as nothing is more subjective and volatile than the value of records.

Author Stefano Tarquini, Mr Pinky as he is lovingly known, has spent a major part of his life collecting records by Pink Floyd. His eye for detail and knowledge of the band's official output on vinyl since 1967 makes him a grateful source of information for fellow collectors and countless publications in Italy and all over the world. He is the founder of the Italian collectors club The Lunatics and has curated various online resources dedicated to the band including the Mr Pinky Discography.

Notes: DeForrest Brown, Jr.'s Assembling a Black Counter Culture presents a comprehensive account of techno with a focus on the history of Black experiences in industrialized labor systems - repositioning the genre as a unique form of Black musical and cultural production.

Brown traces the genealogy and current developments in techno, locating its origins in the 1980s in the historically emblematic city of Detroit and the broader landscape of Black musical forms. Reaching back from the transatlantic slave trade to Emancipation, the Industrial Revolution, and the Great Migration from the rural South to the industrialized North, Brown details an extended history of techno rooted in the transformation of urban centers and the new forms of industrial capitalism that gave rise to the African American working class. Following the groundbreaking work of key early players like The Belleville Three, the multimedia output of Underground Resistance and the mythscience of Drexciya, Brown illuminates the networks of collaboration, production, and circulation of techno from Detroit to other cities around the world.

Assembling a Black Counter Culture reframes techno from a Black theoretical perspective distinct from its cultural assimilation within predominantly white, European electronic music contexts and discourse. With references to Theodore Roszak's Making of a Counter Culture, writings by African American autoworker and political activist James Boggs, and the "techno rebels" of Alvin Toffler's Third Wave, among others, Brown draws parallels between movements in Black electronic music and Afrofuturist, speculative, and Afrodiasporic practices to imagine a world-building sonic fiction and futurity embodied in techno.

DeForrest Brown Jr. is an Alabama-raised rhythmanalyst, writer, and representative of the Make Techno Black Again campaign. As Speaker Music, he channels the African American modernist tradition of rhythm and soul music as an intellectual site and sound of generational trauma. On Juneteenth of 2020, he released the album Black Nationalist Sonic Weaponry on Planet Mu. His written work explores the links between the Black experience in industrialized labor systems and Black innovation in electronic music, and has appeared in Artforum, Triple Canopy, NPR, CTM Festival, Mixmag, among many others. He has performed or presented work at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin; Camden Arts Centre, UK; Unsound Festival, Krakow; Sonar, Barcelona; Issue Project Room, New York; and elsewhere. Notes: This book catalogues a collection of flyers and other house music related ephemera from the years 1983 to 1989, courtesy of Mario "Liv It Up" Luna, a DJ living in the Pilsen neighbourhood of Chicago during this time. These flyers, also called pluggers, were used for promotional purposes. They would be placed in record stores and passed out at schools and on the street to help get the word out about upcoming house music events. Although by no means encyclopaedic, this collection documents a variety of figures from Chicago's emerging house scene: first generation "kings of house" alongside the WBMX Hot Mix 5 and other lesser-known DJs at a variety of venues.

Also included in the mix are promoters, record stores, labels, and an assortment of party crews and dance groups who contributed to the growth and atmosphere of house music in Chicago. Notes: Big, Bad & Heavy is the story of legendary jungle DJ Jumpin Jack Frost; a man who lived his life at the break-neck speed of the music he played.

Raised on the tough south London streets of Brixton, Nigel Thompson was saved from a life of crime and punishment, by music. A pirate DJ on Passion FM, when acid house broke down virtually every cultural boundary in the UK, Frost was right there at the forefront of the British rave revolution. Then, when hardcore splintered into jungle in the early nineties, Frost became one of the figureheads of this uniquely British phenomenon; releasing many of the tunes that defined this scene, on his and fellow DJ Bryan Gee's hugely influential record label V.

V would go on to break artists such as the Mercury-Prize winning Roni Size, a success story that saw Frost travelling the planet on his quest to take jungle global. A life of sex, drugs and drum and bass followed as Frost became established as one of the hardest working DJs on the circuit.

Notes: Taking its name from Maryanne Amacher's visionary, unrealized opera, the fourth issue of Blank Forms' journal, Intelligent Life, features a select group of unpublished, newly translated, or otherwise rare texts. The issue opens with a short literary essay by the author Marcia Douglas, in which a deep bass riddim guides a deaf narrator and a reincarnated Bob Marley through important sites in Rastafarianism's development. Next come two interviews with crucial figures in postwar avant-garde music: the Japanese guitarist Kazuo Imai and the American composer Robert Ashley, along with pianist and frequent collaborator "Blue" Gene Tyranny. The previously unpublished interview with Imai was conducted by Blank Forms' editor and artistic director Lawrence Kumpf during Imai's first trip to the United States, in 2018, and finds the artist reflecting on recent work with the collective Marginal Consort as well as his foundational experiences playing with two other titans of Japanese experimentalism, Takehisa Kosugi and Masayuki Takayanagi. The interview with Ashley and "Blue" Gene, meanwhile, first published in German in 1984 on the occasion of a staging of Ashley's opera Atalanta, was translated for the first time into in English for this publication.

Intelligent Life continues with a series of longer pieces showcasing a diverse set of complex practices and histories, beginning with that of Detroit-based artist Onyx Ashanti. Onyx contributes his own Octavia Butler-referencing "sonocybernetic manifesto", first published online in 2016, which exists simultaneously as theoretical treatise, memoir, and practical guide to his idiosyncratic technology-based practice. Following this is a comprehensive essay on Catherine Christer Hennix's engagement with intuitionism and other esoteric approaches to math, written by the mathematician and musician Spencer Gerhardt. Gerhardt's lucid, previously unpublished essay serves as a necessary complement to Blank Forms Editions' forthcoming collection of Hennix's abstruse, mostly unpublished body of writing, Poesy Matters and Other Matters. The issue continues with a sort of titular essay, a rich analysis of Amacher's "Intelligent Life" -- the first such piece on this work -- by Amacher scholar Amy Cimini. Intelligent Life was an incredibly prescient work that sought to upend any remaining vestiges of traditional operatic form and staging. Intelligent Life -- the journal issue -- then concludes with a lengthy interview with the artist Walter De Maria. One of the few interviews De Maria gave in his lifetime, this one, created for the Archives of American Art in 1972, sheds significant light on De Maria's early intellectual and artistic development as well as his work as a musician. Although he largely stopped playing music by 1970, and although few recordings of his efforts exist, De Maria played alongside musicians ranging from Lou Reed to Don Cherry to Henry Flynt.
