But when Mario "Liv It Up" Luna dug up a long-forgotten cache of material, and from that we bring you Beyond Heaven: Volume II. It has the same format as Volume I, but with all new flyers documenting an extended window of history, from early "mobile discos" that reflect roots of the underground movement before the term "house" was even coined, to the emergence of a new generation of house DJs and artists in Chicago inspired by the pioneers of the genre. As with the original, this book reflects a mix of figures and parallel movements that were entangled with the world of house. Choosing Death: The Improbable History Of Death Metal & Grindcore (by Albert Mudrian)
Cat: 760273 Rel: 20 Dec 19

Revised & expanded 384-page paperback book on the history of grindcore and death metal - with introduction by John Peel
Notes: In 1986, the idea that death metal and grindcore would ever impact popular culture was unimaginable. Initially circulated through a scattered tape-trading network of underground thrillseekers, bands rose from every corner of the globe and death metal and grindcore spread faster than a pandemic plague of undead flesheaters. By 1994, the genre's most prominent labels had sold millions of albums. Choosing Death examines the rise, fall, and resurrection through the eyes and ringing ears of the artists and entrepreneurs behind the movement. Features forewards by JOHN PEEL and SCOTT CARLSON (Repulsion). 384-page heavily-illustrated dexluxe softcover books with 16-page colour section.

Dodged & Burned: Seminal Rock Photography 1976-1984 by Brian Shanley
Cat: 780064 Rel: 18 Jun 20

paperback book
Notes: Chicago photographer & graphic designer Brian Shanley may best known for his work with Wax Trax! Records during the 1980s, but for the first time anywhere, Hozac Books has collected his seminal band photographs that he shot during his time before settling in at the record label's art department. Most of these incredible shots are previously unpublished, and not even seen by many of the bands themselves. From 1976 to 1984, Brian Shanley fixated himself at the epicenter of whichever show was happening around Chicago (and a few from NYC and London as well) and locked in on the talent. Setting his craft apart from most of his photographer brethren, Shanley focused on portrait-style shots of bands that rarely ever sat still, and along with his trusty camera, was welcomed into a world where most people aren't allowed to tread.

You won't find a better snapshot of the fledgling 70s Chicago punk scene than in Dodged & Burned, which collects rare images of bands such as Epicycle, The Imports, Sundog Summit, Special Affect, and more, that escaped attention and fame at the time, yet still are firmly rooted in the city's rich music history. But that still can't overshadow Shanley's incredible shots of the new and exciting touring bands that criss-crossed the US passing thru Chicago on many of their maiden voyages, most of which have never been seen before anywhere.

Featuring a Foreword by Sub Pop Records' founder Bruce Pavitt, he fondly recalls meeting Shanley in the early 1980s when his Chicago-based fanzine Subterranean Pop ran their first ads that Shanley designed for Wax Trax, as well as an introduction by David Kendrick (DEVO, Sparks, Gleaming Spires) and commentary by Kevin Haskins (Bauhaus, Love & Rockets, Tones on Tail).

Halluzination, Perspektive, Synthese follows the eponymous exhibition at Kunsthalle Wien that took place from November 2017 to January 2018
Notes: Large format catalogue documenting a multichannel installation by Florian Hecker at Kunsthalle Wien, transformated into a resonating space, with texts by curators, researchers, theorists, and art historians.

The catalogue collects essays by curators, researchers, theorists, and art historians on Hecker's work and its relation to topics ranging from musique concrète, Mallarmé's poem The Afternoon of a Faun, and computer music. The psychoacoustic phenomenon of Resynthese FAVN is illustrated via a series of tensor acoustic measurements resembling the colorized impressions of thermal imaging, which is followed by 270 pages of densely sprawling data tables abstracting sound and its textures into text.

Highlights & Lowlights 1983-1987
Cat: 785234 Rel: 28 Aug 20

Softcover book
Notes: Grim Humour was a UK fanzine which existed for eighteen editions, between 1983 and 1993. It received good reviews and favourable attention from the outset, partly due to its often sarcastic or caustic tone (which became more pronounced with later editions) and its focusing on many groups who arrived from the post-punk music landscape that originated in the DIY sensibilities of the time. Although initially assembled by a group of friends whose passion for the music they wished to document far overrode their artistic or writing skills, the fanzine soon developed in every respect and even became (inter)nationally distributed to independent record stockists, resulting in larger print runs and, with the later editions, a more semi-professional approach that never once betrayed the attitudinal stance of the early issues. This collection is dedicated to re-edited interviews, reviews and suchlike from the first ten editions, reprints of a number of the original pages, bonus material and several contributions by those who were involved with the 'zine, championed it or were part of the very same enclave it pulsated in. Due to the fact many of the original pages had colour backgrounds or were brimming with text bashed out on barely functioning typewriters, the idea of simply rewriting many of the features took hold as a sensible alternative itself open to being expanded on and contextualised. The features include interviews with The Fall, Killing Joke, Crass, Coil, 400 Blows, Sonic Youth, In The Nursery, Head Of David, Virgin Prunes, The Damned, Nick Cave, The Ramones, Fool's Dance (featuring Simon Gallup of The Cure), And Also The Trees, Alternative TV, Portion Control, Big Black and others, plus many reviews, a couple of rants and far more besides. It is hoped this book illuminates a tiny segment of a culture now long gone and never to be repeated. Given just how many of those concerned remain active to this day in one capacity or another, this is far more than a simple nostalgia trip.

Let's Put It To Music/20 Years Of
Cat: 710807 Rel: 04 Jan 19

224 page book with 7" vinyl
Notes: After having borrowed lines from Jimi Hendrix and English poets for all previous anniversary releases we struck out for this one until Kim, well after the deadline, accidentally stumbled over Johnny Cash and "Forever Words: The Unknown Poems". "Let's Put It To Music" quite nails it when it comes to the basic idea of the book and how we approach the whole process of making a record.

As Tim Gane is quotet in Adrian Shaughnessy's introduction "a Stereolab record was never finished until the cover was done". That rings true for Rune Grammofon as well, and we would like to add that a sleeve is never designed for the sole purpose of selling a product (it took 28 releases before an artist was pictured on the sleeve!), or necessarily reflect the music in any way (is that even possible?), but rather to establish a suggestive relation between the two, often based on the album title or a song title, but not in an obvious way.
After some 200 releases, I can't remember Kim ever "explaining" a sleeve design, and I can't remember me ever asking him. It's no secret that label founder Rune Kristoffersen is a big admirer of labels like Blue Note, Impulse, ECM, 4AD and Factory, to mention some labels with strong visual identities. But we can't recall another label that has worked with one designer exclusively for 20 years and 200 releases.

The exclusivity was a premise for our collaboration from the very beginning, but we certainly never had any expectations about how long we would be able to keep it going. Especially when considering that Kim is occupied on a number of arenas; as photographer, filmmaker, illustrator, painter, writer, musician, dancer and choreographer.
As one will discover, the book is far from being a catalog lining up the releases (it's not even "complete" or chronological in that sense), but gives an interesting insight by also including sketches, rejected designs and unused ideas that never left the drawing board... until now. Lists are a source of controversy, as Hedvig Mollestad discusses rather well in her text.

We haven't had much time for them either, but with the resurgence of music literature on all sort of subjects, they seem to have come alive again. And with the eclectic mix of artists on the label, why not give it a try? We figure the main funcion of lists is to arouse curiosity and hopefully lead to new cultural discoveries, which can only be a good thing. The idea of including a 7" single also came late and would depend on getting at last one track real quickly. To our delight, we miraculously ended up with what is surely three of the most beautiful tracks in our catalog, and all exclusive for this release.

Tracklist:

Side A:
1. Fire! Orchestra - Enter, Part One (With & Without Fire!)

Side B:
1. Maja SK Ratkje - Sja, Amioda
2. The Last Hurrah!! With Nora Zheng - Blues In Chinatown

Mechanical Fantasy Box: The Homoerotic Journals Of Patrick Cowley
Cat: 747801 Rel: 11 Nov 19

Journals of Patrick Cowley, with illustrations by Gwenael Rattke
Notes: Mechanical Fantasy Box is Cowley's homoerotic journal, or as he called it, "graphic accounts of one man's sex life." The journal begins in 1974 and ends in 1980 on his 30th birthday. It chronicles his slow rise to fame from lighting technician at The City Disco to crafting a ground-breaking 16-minute remix of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" to performing with Sylvester at the SF Opera House. Vivid descriptions are told of cruising in '70s SoMA sex venues to primal highs in Buena Vista Park and composing pornophonics in his Castro apartment. The entries are introspective and show a very out-front, alive person going through the throes of gay liberation post-Stonewall.

French-born artist and Berlin resident Gwenael Rattke works in collage, silkscreen, photography and Xerox graphics. Rattke's collage works borrow from the visual codes of the 60s and 70s. Intricate, ornamental and excessive, they present "an imagined past fired with beauty and sexual freedom." For this book Rattke created 25 original illustrations inspired by selected entries, 3 street maps documenting locations mentioned herein and 4 collages of photos, ephemera and notes Patrick stuffed inside the journal. We've included Patrick's doodles too, as well as introductory essays by Josh Cheon, Theresa McGinley and Jorge Socarras.

NYHC: New York Hardcore 1980-1990 (by Tony Rettman)
Cat: 553209 Rel: 02 Aug 19

Book documenting the New York hardcore scene between 1980-1990
Notes: Known for its glamorous 1970s punk rock scene, New York City matched the grim urban reality of the 1980s with a rawer musical uprising: New York hardcore. As bands of misfits from across the region gravitated to the forgotten frontier of Manhattan's Lower East Side. With a backdrop of despair, bands like Agnostic Front, Cro-Mags, Murphy's Law, and Youth of Today confronted their reality with relentlessly energetic gigs at CBGB, A7, and the numerous squats in the area.

Tony Rettman's ambitious oral history captures ten years of struggling, including the scene's regional rivalries with D.C. and Boston, the birth of moshing, the clash and coming to terms of hardcore and heavy metal, the straightedge movement, and the unlikely influence of Krishna consciousness.

With a foreword by Freddy Cricien of Madball, who made his stage debut with Agnostic Front at age seven, NYHC slams the sidewalk with savage tales of larger-than-life characters and unlikely feats of willpower. The gripping and sometimes hilarious narrative is woven together like the fabric of New York itself from over 100 original interviews with members of Absolution, Adrenalin O.D., Agnostic Front, Antidote, Bad Brains, Bloodclot, Bold, Born Against, Breakdown, Cause for Alarm, Citizen Arrest, Cro-Mags, Crumbsuckers, Death Before Dishonor, Even Worse, False Prophets, Don Fury, Gorilla Biscuits, H20, Heart Attack, Inhuman, Into Another, Irate, Judge, Kraut, Leeway, Life's Blood, Major Conflict, Max's Kansas City, Murphy's Law, Nausea, Nihilistics, Nuclear Assault, Numskulls, Outburst, Pro-Pain, Quicksand, Rat Cage Records, Raw Deal, Reagan Youth, Rorschach, S.O.D., Sacrilege, Savage Circle, Sheer Terror, Shelter, Shok, Sick of it All, Side by Side, Skinhead Youth, Straight Ahead, the Abused, the Cryptcrashers, the Mad, the Misfits, the Misguided, the Mob, the Psychos, the Ritz, the Stimulators, the Undead, Token Entry, Underdog, Urban Waste, Virus, Warzone, Youth of Today, and many, many more.

Only Death Is Real (by Tom Gabriel Fischer)
Cat: 726924 Rel: 28 Mar 19

An Illustrated History of Hellhammer & Early Celtic Frost 1981-1985
Notes: This formidable oversized hardcover runs 288 pages (including a 32-page colour section), and combines hundreds of unseen early HELLHAMER and CELTIC FROST photos with a vast treasure trove of artwork and memorabilia. A substantial written component by TOM GABRIEL FISCHER (aka TOM G. WARRIOR). Fischer details his upbringing on the outskirts of Zurich, Switzerland, and the hardships and triumphs he faced bringing the visions of his ground-breaking bands Hellhammer and eventually Celtic Frost to reality.

In addition, the book includes an introduction by NOCTURNO CULTO of Norwegian black metal act DARKTHRONE, and a foreword by noted metal author JOEL MCIVER. There is no question that this book goes farther than any other source in exploring the origins of underground heavy metal. The wealth of visual information is astounding, both in terms of documenting early 1980s headbangers and exposing the still-relevant imagery of the first Hellhammer and Celtic Frost photo sessions. On top of that, the written chapters combine Tom Fischer's often shocking stories with lengthy quotes from MARTIN ERIC and the other main Hellhammer members, explaining in intimately human terms how extreme metal was born. Stunning.

Paloma Parfrey/Scrolls: After LA
Cat: 712173 Rel: 26 Nov 18

Limited edition book + CD
Notes: After L.A. is a lifetime as a moment. Not just a collection, but a consideration of what it means for an artist to have grown up, lashed out, and re-nested all within the extremely wide borders of Los Angeles. PALOMA PARFREY's ethos is immersed in LA history, both of the book smarts sort and the personally experienced. To some she is known as a chef. Others a punk diva. The majority of strangers in LA probably know her as the person always checking out 15 books simultaneously at the library. After L.A. pulls together all these things in the form of both a book and an album equal parts intertwined and standing on their own; much like the strange way the diversities of LA life and history work together.

Paloma Parfrey has been writing and performing poetry around LA since she was 13. Her band, THE SHARP EASE, was an integral part of the LA DIY punk scene throughout the '00s. Her bandmate for the CD portion of this release is BRIAN MILLER, who performed in the drum and voice quartet FOOT VILLAGE, is a member of the TRUE NEUTRAL CREW, and records music for film and TV. Together they are SCROLLS.

Tangerine Dream Force Majeure: The Autobiography by Edgar Frosese
Cat: 779047 Rel: 12 Jun 20

hardback book
Notes: The first and only autobiography of Tangerine Dream's Edgar Froese! 'Force Majeure' is Froese's mammoth 380-page large format autobiography illustrated with a 48 page photo insert. It's an authentic, sincere and frank account of the unusual adventures of a band and their leader and founder, a group whose electronic innovations wrote themselves in to the history books during the musically crystallised years of the 1970s. Froese's narrative style in this book, entitled 'Force Majeure', is as direct and uncompromising as the man himself, and reflecting the 'sturm und drang' phase of the sixties and seventies, which he experienced first-hand. His stories are written in his own distinct metaphorical language - a language which one can find again and again in his musical compositions. The reader will discover stories unknown until now, and learn the truth about the many myths and legends surrounding the band and their productions, upon which fans have speculated for decades. Edgar's appreciation of the people who stood at his side during those heady days is tangible, whether they were creatives or those who generously offered advice at the various stages of the band's career. This book isn't just a simple chronological list of anecdotes about the career of a band. This autobiography offers the reader a deep insight into the life and times of Tangerine Dream, and Edgar Froese leads you on a very personal journey through his own thoughts and actions, his everyday life and his sources of inspiration. The adventure included crazy meetings and exciting episodes, moments spent with many interesting and well-known personalities such as Salvador Dali, David Bowie, Richard Branson, Andy Warhol, John Peel, Andy Summers, Jimi Hendrix, Oliver Stone, Jim Rakete, Stevie Nicks, Ridley Scott, Michael Mann, Brigitte Bardot, to name but a few. Over 45 years of experience on stage and more than 16 years in the soundtrack business in Hollywood offer up so much narrative that this much experience would have been sufficient for at least two lives. Edgar wrote his autobiography over a period spanning approximately seven years, and he invested every free moment he had into it when he was not working on film soundtracks, album productions and live concerts.

"A Crucible of Coming-of-Age Comedies from Animal House to Zapped!" - by Mike "McBeardo" McPadden
Notes: Born in the drive-in theatre backseats of the 1970s, the demonic fun of Teen Movie Hell ignited the 1980s VCR, cable TV, and multiplex booms that burned well into the 1990s. Between George Lucas's American Graffiti (1973) and Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused (1993), lust-driven laff riots on the order of Animal House, Porky's, Fast Times At Ridgemont High, and Revenge of the Nerds boomed at the box office and celebrated adolescent misbehaviour run amok.

Author Mike "McBeardo" McPadden (Heavy Metal Movies) passes righteous judgment, one boobs-and-boner opus at a time, plus penetrating insight from Eddie Deezen (Grease, Zapped!), Samm Deighan, Kat Ellinger, Wendy McClure, Katie Rife, Heather Drain, Lisa Carver, Rachel McPadden, Liz Mason, Christina Ward, and Kier-La Janisse.

Ultrablack of Music speculates on the manifold ways in which the objective, inhuman soundworlds, which roar underneath humans' sensological apparatus, pervade and smoothly colonize our humanoid-alien, affective and cognitive capacitiesiand how to construct ways out of the mess of the Master Rhythms of Sonic Thanaticist Capital and its stratagems of annihilation and pulpification.

Speculative rhythm productions drive the mathematical ope-rationality and its decisional self-amputations to the edge and create the missing corporeality that rewires our affective capacities and inhibitions by un-mooring, alienating/de-realizing our relations to the killing abstractions (reductive Binarism, identitism/autism), the techgnostical mindset and its mystifications.

Ultrablackened music confronts and pushes us also into the experimentation with this nameless in-between, in which new temporalities can emerge whose winding paths and outcomes can neither be predicted nor guaranteed.
Its cruel love vigorously informed and fueled by the hate in ending this world, as we know and sonically experience it.

Untold (softcover book)
Cat: 786628 Rel: 25 Sep 20

Softcover book
Notes: 'Untold' is an experimental electronic LP from multi-disciplinary artist and author Sophia Loizou. Depicting a series of speculative sonic landscapes; animals, ocean waves and weather systems are abstracted into eco-centric cyber-dreams creating powerful ambient compositions that invite us to see the Earth through the eyes of others.
Untold is not about the natural or the technological but the relationships between the two; sonic textures, breaks and melodies are shaped by the dynamics of a lion's roar or the rhythm of a dolphin's echolocation emissions."I didn't want to make it human-centric," explains Sophia."I wanted to remove my compositional and structural domination, to find ways to make it about the symbiosis of systems I see in the world."

Untold is part of a much bigger multi-disciplinary project that also includes a collection of poems with accompanying audio, artworks, an AV show and a lecture performance.

Multidisciplinary artist and doctoral researcher Sophia Loizou's debut poetic collection 'Untold: A Tellurian Memorandum' imagines a series of speculative sentient landscapes. The six works envision different aspects of entangled Earthly relationships; from the aqueous roots of biotic life and non-human systems of perpetual growth, to biologically enhanced futures where multiple forms of life collide, connect and share their material qualities. "I wanted to portray an open and empathic multiform future,' explains Sophia. 'a world that celebrates the vibrant, messy and multifaceted beauty of non-human forces and forms."

The book is accompanied by a 30-minute speculative sonic landscape in which sounds from living systems, field recordings from human, animal and technological origins meet - producing wild and unpredictable results.

'A Tellurian Memorandum' is part of a much bigger multi-disciplinary project that also includes the LP 'Untold', artworks, an AV show and a lecture performance.

Re-issue of John Dwyer's book of photographs
Notes: Presented for the public's perusal, a coffee table collection of film photos from 2009-2013 by Oh Sees frontman, Castle Face co-conspirator, and all around restless artistic presence John Dwyer. Dwyer seemed to always be pulling out a camera around then and these flicks function as a technicolour joyride through his universe in San Francisco and beyond, with his jackal's smirk from behind the lens all but palpable in these pages. Tour snaps, blackmail fodder, candid camaraderie, and the ringing echo of maniacal laughter await one within. Originally printed in a limited quantity by San Francisco clothing shop and live music incubator Vacation, Castle Face has dusted it off for a wider release for those that never got the chance.

paperback book
Notes: This guide book features various albums recorded & produced in Japan, ranged from Easy Listening, Mood Music, New Age, Ambient, Pops, Rock, Disco, New Wave, Movie OST till Cartoon OST. Under the supervision of Shotaro Matsumoto who is a famous store manager of Coconut Disc record shop, 10 writers introduce about 600 discs."Walearic" is a word coined by Matsumoto, connecting "Wa"(means "Japanese" in Japanese) and "Balearic" club music established in Ibiza, Spain through '00s. As a matter of fact, Walearic is not exactly the same as Balearic. Matsumto was inspired by the vague concept of Balearic which crossovers any genres, and coined the new genre Walearic under his own aesthetics.

As you may know, the demand for Japanese vinyls recorded in 70s & 80s has been rising among the collectors worldwide. This guide book will be the ultimate tool for them to dig the discs.

We Got Power: Hardcore Punk Scenes From 1980s Southern California (by David Markey & Jordan Schwartz)
Cat: 760270 Rel: 20 Dec 19

Deluxe 304-page large-format landscape hardcover book
Notes: As teenagers in 1981, DAVID MARKEY and his best friend JORDAN SCHWARTZ founded We Got Power, a fanzine dedicated to the first-generation hardcore punk music community in their native Los Angeles. Their text and cameras captured the early punk spirit of Black Flag, the Minutemen, Social Distortion, Red Cross/Redd Kross, Suicidal Tendencies, the Descendents, White Flag, the Last, the Gun Club, Saccharine Trust, Sin 34, Nip Drivers, Circle One, M.D.C., Big Boys, Youth Brigade, D.R.I., the Butthole Surfers, Firehose, and many others at the height of their precocious punk powers. In the process, the duo's amazing photographs also captured the dilapidated suburbs, abandoned storefronts, and dereliction of the early Reagan eraia rubble-strewn social apocalypse that demanded a youth uprising!

Never before seen except in crude fanzine form, these detailed and richly narrative photos are now collected to present an intimate portrayal of a uniquely fertile creative moment. A deluxe 304-page large format hardcover book featuring essays by DAVID MARKEY, JORDON SCHWARTZ, JENNIFER SCHWARTZ, HENRY ROLLINS, KEITH MORRIS, CHUCK DUKOWSKI, DEZ CADENA, LOUICHE MAYORGA, CAMERON JAMIE, PAT FEAR, STEVE HUMANN, TONY ADOLESCENT, JACK BREWER, JULA BELL, MIKE WATT, SEAN WHEELER, JOE CARDUCCI, DANIEL "SHREDDER" WEIZMANN, and JANET HOUSDEN. Presenting nearly 400 first-generation LA hardcore punk photographs, including complete color reprints of We Got Power fanzine 1981-1983 and beyond.
