I'm Gonna Love You
I'm Gonna Love You (12" repress)
Cat: GCV 003. Rel: 12 May 21
  1. I'm Gonna Love You (Micky More & Andy Tee 12" mix) (8:08)
  2. Special Love (feat Jocelyn Brown - Micky More & Andy Tee 12" mix) (6:39)
Review: Italian soul legends Jestofunk released the classic 'I'm Gonna Love You' back in 1991, it was their first single, in fact. Comprised of northerners Alessandro Staderini, Claudio 'Moz-Art' Rispoli and Farias, they went on to release six albums until disbanding in 2005 after 'Mama Blues'. A zeitgeist of the early '90s acid jazz sound, featuring new jack swing styled beats, a killer sax and soulful vocals, it was the MC Turbo Sax Mix which undoubtedly gained the most popularity, and became an essential track on the playlist of many a hair salon throughout the rest of the decade. Some of you may even know the track from its inclusion on 2011's Knights Of The Playboy Mansion, mixed by French Touch icons Bob Sinclar & Dimitri From Paris. The version featured here is a nice modern reshape by Groove Culture heads Micky More & Andy Tee, taking the track into sensual and emotive territory with their deep house style remix. Proper mood music.

Curtis
Curtis (7")
Cat: BB 45011. Rel: 11 May 21
  1. Curtis (Caserta Boogie Oogie mix) (4:50)
  2. Curtis (Caserta Curious mix) (4:23)
Review: If you are a funk and soul lover, chances are you will already have some Joseph Caserta jams in your bag. He is a 7" don who does a fine job of digging out golden oldies and reworking them for modern dance floors. He is legendary digger Kon's long time engineer and shows many of the skills that got him that job here on two different mixes of 'Curtis.' The first is a lush, soul drenched boogie version with heart-melting chords and a nice squelchy bassline. The Caserta Curious mix on the flip is all icy 808s and body-popping slow beats with smoochy feels.

  2. Electric Juicer (edit) (4:42)
  3. Automatic Can Opener (edit) (5:09)

Review: Melbourne digger and edit master Hysteric is a Melbourne digger and edit master. he has been enlisted here by the Pleasure of Love gang for a four track Ep packed with characterful cuts. They come after he has impressed on labels like Public Possession, Ostra Discos and Centre Neptune, plus of course his own delightfully Italo-tinged Mothball outlet. The sounds here are adventurous and bright, with retro patterns, crashing hits and cheeky vocals over a range of disco grooves that span all styles and scenes. This is a timeless EP, to be sure.

Attack The Dancefloor Vol 18
  1. Doug Willis - "The Mighty Douglas" (Doug Godbizniss mix) (6:39)
  2. Roland Wrightangle - "In Your Blood" (feat Darcus - Ron Basejam mix) (7:19)
  3. Jakatta - "American Dream" (Atjazz remix) (7:20)
  4. The Pockets - "Work It Out" (Dave Lee rework) (6:45)
Review: Dave Lee's Z Records continues to fly the flag for disco-tinged house, or house-tinged disco, from new school artists and old-school mainstays. One thing you can be sure of with music n this label is that it will be big, crowd-pleasing tackle that never forgets its roots. There is real religious rapture in the thrilling Doug Godbizniss mix of 'The Mighty Douglas' which gets the EP underway in fine style. After that is a sumptuous, string-laced house classic from Ron Basejam, a lush mix of the wonderfully ethereal 'American Dram' from lounge-y house don Atjazz and classy, hip-swinging vocal house bomb from Dave Lee himself.

  6. A Voce E Napule (3:32)
  7. Parev' Ajere (4:33)
Review: On their debut album, 2016's the Tony Allen Experiments, Naples twosome Nu Guinea re-invented tracks by the legendary Afro-beat drummer as synth-heavy chunks of deep jazz-funk and nu-Balearica. For this follow-up - their first full length entirely made up of their own compositions - the duo serves up a set of jazz-funk, disco and boogie cuts rich in both their trademark colourful analogue synthesizer sounds and live instrumentation. It's a formula that guarantees a string of memorable highlights, from the sun-kissed peak-time brilliance of "Disco Sole" and rubbery, funk-fuelled "Je Vulesse" (a killer vocal number), to the wobbly downtempo trip of "A Voce E Napule" and Mizell Brothers fizz of closer "Parev Ajare", the album's most synthesizer-heavy cut.

Too Hot
Too Hot (translucent yellow vinyl 7" limited to 250 copies repress) (1 per customer)
Cat: PHI 14 YELLOW. Rel: 10 May 21
  1. Too Hot (4:12)
  2. Too Hot (version) (4:12)
Review: Swiss Balearic overlord Lexx returns with his first single of 2019. As with many of his recent releases, "Too Hot" is a collaborative affair, with Permanent Vacation regular (and longtime friend) Simon 'Woolfy' James swinging by the studio to lend a hand. James delivers a hazy and glassy-eyed vocal perfectly suited to the duo's chugging, Balearic style synth-pop/dub reggae backing track. In authentic reggae fashion, the flipside features a more spaced-out instrumental "Version" rich in whistling lead lines, delay-laden space synths, warm dub bass and tropical guitar flourishes. As much as we like the vocal mix, it's the flipside take that really sets our pulses racing.

  1. Feelings (4:35)
  2. Current Overdrive (3:51)
  3. Velocity Cop (6:00)
  4. Vanity Heights (4:58)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Manchester label Coral City is a brand new affair that launches with a standout first EP. It comes from N&W who have been on a long hiatus but show they have lost none of their skill in the meantime. Their vintage analogue sound is pure and joyful, with nods to old school Italo as well as classic French touch. The rugged beats do their thing below majestic synth work that is sweet, crystalline and catchy. The cosmic chord progressions on each track help take you higher and on this booty shaking evidence this is sure to be a label to watch.

  1. Just Friends (5:51)
  2. Party Together (5:48)
  3. Your Smile (6:00)
  4. Michigan Slide (6:03)
Review: REPRESS ALERT!: After their Pimp Life EP kicked off proceedings last year, Soul Central are back on their very own Electric Shine label with more of that feel good house tackle they do so well. The duo have earned their stripes plenty over the years working with labels like Defected, and they're on searing form here as they whip up a sizzling disco fever with the oh-so-sweet 'Just Friends' and get deep into the groove with the synth-licked 'Party Together'. 'Your Smile' leans in on a truly sentimental vocal hook which will spread infectious positivity out amongst a crowd of party people, and 'Michigan Slide' nudges the heat up with some serious bass flex and bugging Rhodes chords.
