  2. Sartorial - "Together" (6:57)
  3. Monsieur Van Pratt - "Clavs & Trumpet" (5:25)
  4. Vagabundo Club Social - "Encanto Nigeriano" (6:56)
Review: The always funky Tropical Disco Records is back with a 15th fantastic instalment of feel good, playful disco sounds that have you dying for warmer days and brighter nights. It's another various artist affair as is their MO, and Moodena goes first with some horn led disco funk. Sartorial's "Together" is a breezier, beach roller with a sense of cool jazz authority that gets you feeling loved up. Monsieur Van Pratt then brings big Philly strings next to some squelchy acid synth funk before Vagabundo Club Social closes things out with the afro tinged and tribal disco groove of "Encanto Nigeriano".

Hallelujah Anyway (7" repress)
Cat: GLITS 019. Rel: 26 Feb 20
  1. Hallelujah Anyway (Moplen Classic Vibe) (3:41)
  2. Hallelujah Anyway (FK Directors cut Soul Praise) (3:19)
Review: We won't get into the complex history of Candi Staton's "Hallelujah Anyway", but suffice to say that it has been remixed and re-modeled in a myriad of ways over the years. This Glitterbox edition boasts two previously unheard rubs, including a flipside Frankie Knuckles presents Directors Cut "Soul Praise" version that for some reason missed the cut (sorry) back in 2012. While that's good - Knuckles reworks were always luscious, warm and celebratory, and this is no different. Moplen's "Classic Vibe" mix is slower and groovier with a wonderful '90s New Jersey feel (albeit with a touch of gospel-disco flavour), and sounds like a summer anthem in the making.

  12. Brian Tatcher - "Hot Love" (instrumental dub version) (6:48)
  13. Preludio - "Mysterious Nights" (4:46)
Review: Ilan Pdahtzur is as obsessive a record digger as any of his more visible peers. His particular niche is early to mid-eighties club music, and now he gets a platform to show off his skills thanks to the Spacetalk label. "Night City Life" is about music to match that exact setting - nocturnal urban metropolises with glowing neon lights shimmering in the darkness. There's a lot to love across four sides of vinyl here, from Italo disco to steamy boogie cuts and iridescent synth jams. It will make you nostalgic for a time and place you've never experienced (at least not as perfectly as this) and no doubt get plenty of dance floors on their feet.

  1. I'm Always In The Mood (3:56)
  2. Love Is All We Need (4:50)
Review: First released back in 1978 on Parachute Records, Randy Brown's debut album "Welcome To My Room" is one of the better lesser-known Philadelphia soul style sets of the disco era. The team behind Expansions Records are certainly fans, because their latest "45" offers up two of the album's most potent tracks. A-side "I'm Always In The Mood" is simply superb, with Brown doing his best Teddy Pendergrass impression atop a heavily orchestrated, dancefloor-friendly backing track. Flipside "Love Is All We Need" is a little deeper but no less sumptuous, sounding a little like Vincent Montana producing "What's Going On" era Marvin Gaye. In a word: essential.

  1. We're Gonna Make It (8:35)
  2. Glide Right (6:27)
  3. Gerry (6:02)
  4. All The Feeling (8:02)
Review: Duca Bianco have been on a roll lately with their off-beat edits and versions, finding a unique niche in a saturated market by welcoming a bit more of that psych rock sound into their grooves. On this record it's DJ Si Si Si Gracias, who is happy slinging out loose and jangly funk that sounds like it's been picked up in 1980s New York lolling around outside The Mudd Club with one eye on Danceteria but definitely too freaky for Studio 54. "Gerry" is a special highlight - a slow and delirious groover with wild synths spilling all over the funk. If you want things really messy though, head straight for the dub chaos of "All The Feeling", where the percussion sounds like it's falling in on itself (in a good way).

Riddims Of Culture 3 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ERC 091. Rel: 24 Feb 20
  1. Kongo Bina (Trance vocal) (7:19)
  2. Roots & Culture (4:24)
  3. Flatline (3:36)
  4. Satan (dub) (3:37)
  5. Riddim Of Inari (Tribal mix) (5:52)
  6. Anthems (4:06)
Review: Emotional Rescue take one final trip into the archives of The New Morning - the Munich-based Afro-cosmic project active in the mid-'90s. This third round of tripped-out dancefloor delights draws on a global panoply of sounds once again, starting in a mystical mood with "Kongo Bina" before firing up the party stove with "Roots & Culture" and slapping down a heavyweight chug on the fierce n' slow "Flatline". There's plenty more fireballs on the B-side, not least the looped-up funk of "Satan (Dub)" and the heavy hitting percussion of "Riddim Of Inari (Tribal Mix)". "Anthems" finishes the final volume of this valuable reissue series on a stirring, melancholic note with powerful choral voices and sentimental melodic refrains - the perfect emotional set closer.

  3. When Will You Come Down? (4:01)
  4. Picayune (3:13)
  5. Cricket (part II) (3:07)
  6. Ancient Nomads (4:07)
Review: Emotional Rescue continue to explore the fruitful early '90s exploits of The New Morning, a Munich-based crew who took their lead from the Afro-Cosmic scene pioneered in Northern Italy by DJs like Danielle Baldelli and Beppe Loda. On this second installment of spiritually charged, low tempo club killers, you get the chants and percussion of "Riddim Of Inari", tightly looped West African funk of "Mi C'Yaan" and the stunningly evocative "When Will You Come Down?". There's more rolling rhythmic business to be enjoyed on "Picayune" while "Cricket (part II)" amps up the distortion without losing the groove, and then "Ancient Nomads" seals off this volume in style with a slow, hard-slapping beat to get fully entranced too.

  3. Danielle Baldelli & Dionigi - "Prepare To Energize" (5:55)
  4. Mateo & Matos - "Vibe" (feat Sammy Zone - Jorge Savoretti remix) (7:31)
Review: 1 Life returns to its "Keep It Deep" series with another sizzling slab of feel good party wares designed to blow the clouds away. First up, Vincent Inc remixes Julian Sanza's "Starduster" with the slickest kind of '80s funk - like a Level 42 deep cut on steroids. Rune Lindbaek and Frisvold get deep in the mangroves with their swampy version of "Sunset On Punta Paloma" by Incarnations. Cosmic master Danielle Baldelli and Dionigi bring some slick Italo vibes and subtly psychedelic flourishes to their original production "Prepare To Energize", while Jorge Savoretti shakes up Mateo & Matos' "Vibe" and turns it into a snapping, clacking deep house workout par excellence.

Secretsundaze Edits 001 (140 gram vinyl 12")

  1. Secretsundaze - "Ghana Nila" (Secretsundaze rework) (7:21)
  2. Ge-ology - "Stomp Your Feet" (Ge-ology Re-Flip) (6:43)
Review: Secretsundaze haven't been known for their re-edits much in the past, but that's about to change with this choice new 12". On one side, the label bosses James Priestley and Giles Smith take a tender touch to "Ghana Nila", a little-known spiritual originating in a Californian ashram. Ge-ology is ready to go on the flip, bringing his distinctive MPC funk to Herbie Mann's "Stomp Your Feet" and teasing even more juice out of this already abundant floor burner from the late '70s. From movement meditation to effervescent energy, this record has a spectrum of feelings covered in two edits that sound genuinely fresh and inspired.

Review: Two years ago New Guinea joined forces with Early Sounds Recordings to offer up a killer compilation of rare 1970s and early 80s disco, jazz-funk and electrofunk recordings from Napoli, the Italian city they call home. Such was the success of the set that they've decided to offer up this equally impressive sequel. Amongst the mostly ultra-obscure, little-known cuts you'll find a wealth of highlights, from the high-octane disco stomp of Tonica & Dominante's "Babilonia", the spacey boogie business that is Ara Macao's super-sweet "Reflection", the languid AOR-funk of Maria Kelly's "Dimme" and the low-slung jazz-funk brilliance of Tony Iglio's "Luci Di New York".
