  3. Untitled Wave (6:39)
  4. Interface (8:15)
Review: Debuts all round as young Swiss producer Ecar makes his bow on the freshly minted Royalties Rates Recordings label. It's an EP that not only shows great promise, but also contains a string of club-ready jams. He's in re-edit mode on the A-side, putting a house rocket underneath and woozy, synth-laden disco jam ("Diana", whose cascading synth solos are sublime), before delivering a throbbing, pitched-up version of a Quincy Jones produced electrofunk slammer. On the flip, you'll find more bustling, synth-heavy peak-time fare in the shape of acid-flecked stomper "Untitled Wave" and a wide-eyed, piano-sporting anthem seemingly inspired by rave-era warehouse jams.

  3. Come On & Juggy Some More (6:50)
  4. Eddie Talk (5:52)
Review: Brooklyn's SecondHand Records bossman Fatik lays down a wedge of powerful editry in the third volume of his Morgan Avenue imprint. Following dispatches from the don Nicky Siano and Osmose & byDesign, Fatik celebrates disco funk and soul in all their many deeply-dug shapes and forms. Ranging from the straight up floor pumps and gospel-level drive of "Every Night Venus Shines Bright" right the way through to the jazzier, hazier piano-snaking "Eddie Talk", all four tracks are subtly enhanced, retaining their OG power but charged for a modern day hoedown. Don't sleep on these.

  1. 123 (Mr K 7" edit Of Walter Gibbons Acetate) (3:18)
  2. My Sweet Summer Suite (Mr K 7" edit) (5:42)
Review: More hot-to-trot edits from Most Excellent Unltd's 7" series. As usual, legendary New York scalpel fiend Danny Krivit is at the controls (under the now familiar Mr K alias, of course). A-side cut "1 2 3" boasts Krivit's edit of an obscure, unreleased acetate mix by Walter Gibbons of a jaunty funk number rich in military style drum fills, mazy electric organ solos and bold bass guitar riffs. Over on the flip you'll find "My Sweet Summer Suite", a drum-heavy workout that seems to be built out of elements of a number of low-slung disco and funk tunes. The clipped, loopy groove - as previously used on a number of Krivit's other edits - is loaded with lots of extra percussion and some trippy, Amazonian flute motifs.

  1. Bian Kou
  2. E Clolo
  3. Mioukouna
Review: London-based reissue label Kalita is here to take you deep into the hidden corners of African grooves, kicking things off in style with this infectious selection of cuts from Ernest Koffi, otherwise known as NST Cophie's, recorded in Paris and released on a private press LP in 1980. "Bian Kou" is a loose and limber disco funk number with impeccable slap bass, while "E Clolo" brings a more rounded, distinctly 80s flavoured production. Taking over the whole B-side, "Miokouna" takes on a more distinctly Afrobeat-minded demeanour and beams the Ivory Coast sunshine into your ears with irresistible force.

  1. Breaking Ice On Love (2:21)
  2. Hey Love (2:40)
  3. Hook Me Up (4:09)
Review: Throughout the 1970s, Houston vocalist Sammie Relford released a string of brilliant singles on a variety of tiny labels. These days, the vast majority of these are rare as hen's teeth, making this three-track 7" something of a must-have for soul fans. On the A-side you'll find the brilliant (and near impossible to find) "Breaking Ice On Love", a heartfelt chunk of sumptuous, string-drenched goodness that sounds like it was recorded at some time during the Philadelphia Soul era, and "Hey Love", a sweet and loose ballad originally featured on Relford's 1979 debut album. Turn to the B-side for "Hook Me Up", a smooth, '80s soul style slow jam recorded in the twilight of the Texan vocalist's career.

  1. Afro Chemy (7:01)
  2. Funky Cave (6:10)
  3. Heather (9:47)
Review: Like many producers these days, Riccio's discography includes a blend of rock solid re-edits and high quality original productions for the likes of Bosconi Extra Virgin and People Must Jam. This 12" marks his first appearance on the consistently impressive Hell Yeah! imprint. There's plenty to set the pulse racing throughout, from the pleasingly loose and groovy, Afrobeat-goes-house goodness of "Afro Chemy", to the fiendishly fuzzy, Daniele Baldelli style Afro-cosmic funk of "Funky Cave". Arguably best of all, though, is epic flipside "Heather", a near 10-minute fusion of dreamy chords, slow-burning Kalimba melodies, gentle electronics and languid, mid-tempo beats. In case you were wondering, it's definitely Balearic.

Review: Edits that go bump in the night: Scrimshire upgrades some of his Halloween specials to vinyl status for a cheeky Wah Wah run. Lalomie Washburn gets a sweet cut and shuffle to deadly effect while Button Down Brass's cosmic disco twist on Stevie's seminal "Superstition" gets a 2017 update with a little layering, uptempo drive and just a smidgeon more cosmicity on the synths. Delectable any time of year, not just in Spooktober.

  1. Shakin (5:32)
  2. Nine Toms (6:31)
Review: It has been a long time between drinks for former Soul Jazz Records regular Secondo. Shakin appears almost five years to the day since his last outing on Whataboutnow, the low profile label he established in 2011. On the A-side, he reaches for the synths and glistening guitar solos on a loopy house jam that sounds like it was built out of loops taken from an obscure and overlooked mid-80s Balearic pop B-side. B-side "9 Toms" inhabits similar sonic territory, with the Swiss producer seemingly crafting more sunny, dewy-eyed, loop-house gold out of discarded bits of a 1980s blue-eyed soul song. If Tiger and Woods dug for soft focus sample fare rather than synth-laden electrofunk, it would probably sound like this.

Review: When it came to recording I Have What I Gave, his first full-length since 2014, Bottin decided to do things differently. Opting for a "stream of consciousness" approach, he recorded the ten tracks spontaneously, often working on several tracks at one time. As a result, there's a frisson of excitement throughout, with the majority of the material offering instant gratification. Musically, it offers his usual synth-heavy blend of Italo-disco, house and '80s pop influences, expanded by subtle nods towards "digital disco" (a micro-house variant promoted by Force Tracks in the mid 1990s), Italian dream house and the warehouse-friendly throb of Kevin Saunderson's Inner City project. Amongst the highlights is "Stellar Parade", a lilting and melodious Italo-disco workout written in collaboration with Alexander Robotnick.

Review: The final part of Dark Entries' long-running series of archival Patrick Cowley releases showcases tracks originally recorded for Afternooners, a late '70s gay porn film by director John Coletti. As with previous Cowley releases on Dark Entries, the double album also contains previously unheard material rediscovered from the Fox Studio archives. It's another essential collection of atmospheric synthesizer music in the producer's distinctive style, all told, with tracks ranging from the whistling cheeriness of "Hot Beach" and the sparkling, cowbell-laden throb of "One Hot Afternoon" to the dubbed-out, semi-ambient dreaminess of "Bore & Stroke" and the humid, upbeat "Jungle Orchid".

Review: You'd be hard struck to find any essential disco anthem without the unmistakeable talent of Loleatta Holloway on it. One of the most distinctive voices in dance music history, her collaborations with the legendary NYC label Salsoul are the stuff of legend - and this collection features some of the American songstress' highlights from the label's catalogue. The most sought after versions have been included here by the undisputed masters of the edit: Shep Pettibone, Walter Gibbons, Larry Levan and Tom Moulton to name a few. And the tracklisting? The hits are all on here, rest assured: "Love Sensation" (Tom Moulton mix), "Hit & Run" (Walter Gibbons 12" Jungle mix), "All about The Paper" (Bobby Guttadaro 12" remix) and more all feature.
