  1. Ghetto Disco (8:43)
  2. Ghetto Disco (part 2) (7:03)
Review: Ted Taylor's stone cold T.K Disco bomb gets a long, long awaited reissue. Still so vital and feel-good it stretches across two sides, Ted's iconic falsetto and the honeyed backing harmonies remains as skin-ripplingly powerful as they did in 1977. A cult classic, there's something here for everybody; the cool, the hip and indeed the square.

  1. Come A Little Closer (6:03)
  2. Wazoo (6:16)
  3. Prototypical (5:27)
Review: Millionhands head honcho Tom Mangan is back as Tee Mango on Aus Music - this would be his third appearance on the label in less than a year - which speaks volumes really. EP#2 features the lo-slung sexiness of "Make It Last Forever" featuring that awesome Inner Life sample throughout. On the flip, we have the funky deep-disco bounce of "Wazoo" that's perfect mood lighting for the early evening, while something a bit more energetic and harder hitting exists in the form of "Prototypical". A soulful and emotive house journey featuring gritty rhythms, a tough bouncy bassline and trippy stabs that's perfect to take crowd into the later hours - we absolutely loved this one!

  3. Take Me To (New York City) (4:18)
Review: The result of a diligent digging quest since he heard DJ Klas drop it many years ago, Lyonaisse editor Waxist has finally track down his own copy of Lamar's 1980 disco soul love gem and given it some serious treatment. Extending the unfettered positivity of the original by almost two minutes (with special attention paid to that immense organ solo), it lives up to its name in every possible way. For authenticity's sake he's also included the original B-side "Take Me To New York". Still standing the test of time impeccably after 35 years, one tickle from the lolloping bassline and swooning keys and your dancefloor will be hooked.

  2. Everybody Disco (part 1) (4:20)
  3. I Was Born To Love You (3:40)
  4. Everybody Disco (part 2) (4:00)
Review: Unlike many of their compatriots, Timeless Legend were a soul group who didn't limit themselves to a killer, one-off EP before disappearing into the shadows. Believe us when we say that this is basically what happened to most bands in the 70s. In the case of these guys, they stuck around for a series of albums and singles that have remained engrained in every collector's memory, and that now go for big bucks on the second-hand market. "Everybody Disco" is their 1979 masterpiece, a tune that encapsulates the disco movement perfectly, from the beats to the bass and even the synths. What a hummable dance anthem - grab it before the RSD 2018 stock runs out!

  1. The Tolbert Family Singers - "Ride The Gospel Train" (feat Brother O C Tolbert) (3:36)
  2. O C Tolbert - "Give It To Glory" (5:46)
Review: With Cordial Recordings, LoveVinyl's Roual Galloway is doing a terrific job in making rare, sought-after tracks available to a wider audience. In truth, you'll struggle to find a more rare and expensive gospel killer than The Tolbert Family Singers' "Ride The Gospel Train", a drum machine driven chunk of gospel-boogie with crunchy funk guitars that's been changing hands for hundreds of pounds online. Andrew Weatherall is a fan and it's easy to see why. Flipside "Give it Glory", a solo cut by Tolbert Family patriarch Brother OC Tolbert, is a sweeter and breezier slab of gospel-soul that has never before been released on vinyl. Two killer cuts for the price of one: nice one, Roual!

Thinking Allowed (12" repress)
Cat: ESP 015. Rel: 31 May 18
  1. Bit One (7:15)
  2. Cloud Country (5:21)
  3. Thinking Allowed (8:44)
Review: In a 2010 interview, Tornado Wallace explained the inspiration behind his distinctive title as "something between a deep south blues artist or a logger from Nebraska". In subsequent years the Australian has seemingly swapped the south blues artist for something southern Italo, keeping the Nebraskan edge with his logger's beard. This is demonstrated in wondrous fashion on the water-coloured artwork to Thinking Aloud, his debut EP for Lovefingers' ESP Institute. Heavy bass plods switch to a walking bassline in "Bit One", as motorised and starry arpeggios weave between breathy vocals that are as much human as they are synthesised. This is complemented by "Cloud Country" which lowers in BPM with more Italo inspired arpeggios, pulsating toms and sprinklings of Latin sounding synths. The title track "Thinking Allowed" hogs the flip, slowly revealing itself to be a Balearic burner of the highest calibre. It opens with an analogous kick-snare combo and a "higher-self" spoken word spiel that's reminiscent of Will Powers legendary "Adventures In Success". Peaks come; troughs go as the track builds sublimely before dovetailing back to its original form. Welcome back sir!

  1. Whatcha Got (5:25)
  2. Saison (4:00)
Review: G.A.M.M can always be relied to deliver the goods, whatever party-starting musical furrow they're ploughing. In this case, unheralded artist Ukokos lays down brilliantly executed revisions of contrasting cuts. On the A-side, 'Whatcha Got" sees our new hero lighting a rocket under a West coast jazz-rock classic (yep, it's a Steely Dan cut), combining elements from the Californian combo's original with jazzy breakbeats and groovy new musical touches that guarantee loose-limbed dancefloor satisfaction. On the flip, things get even wilder as an obscure Polish jazz-funk gem is laden with spacey new synths, cosmic effects and punchy beats. While the A-side is good, it's this flipside rework that's really got us hot under the collar.

  1. You + Me = Love (11:14)
  2. Sandman (4:00)
Review: Recorded in 1976, "You + Me = Love" was a song for Norman Whitfield's Whitfield Records, recorded by The Undisputed Truth. Whitfield, producer and creator of the band, had been at Motown Records for over a decade, and in 1975 left to start up his own record label. They were the first act to follow him from the legendary Detroit label after a lineup change, when Tyrone Douglas and then female lead singer Virginia McDonald left the group. Taka Boom, Chaka Khan's sister, joined longtime member Joe Harris, Calvin Stevenson and Tyrone Barkley. The song reached #48 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #37 on the R&B Charts, and was the group's one-and-only UK hit - appearing on the UK Singles Chart in early 1977.

Review: Since launching last year, the Act of Sedition label has specialized in releasing "double-pack" gatefold 7" singles - a format rarely seen outside of indie-rock circles (and even then, it's hardly commonplace). Naturally, this third missive is another double-disc affair, stretching four tasty reworks across a pair of dinky discs.

  4. Brenda Taylor - "You Can't Have Your Cake & Eat It Too" (Rahaan LDF remix) (8:08)
Review: In cahoots with the annual (not to mention excellent) Liverpool Disco Festival, celebrated editor and remixer Rahaan has been let loose on the West End Records catalogue. Happily, his new versions are rightfully respectful to the chosen disco and boogie classics with the Chicagoan simply adding choice effects here and there as well as some cranky old drum machine beats and occasional synthesizer flourishes. This is particularly evident on his raw but deep and slightly dubby take on Brenda Taylor's "You Can Have You Cake It Too", but also comes to the fore on the standout remix of Mahogany's spacey boogie jam "Ride on The Rhythm". String-laden disco bliss is provided via a bass-heavy re-arrangement of the Chuck Davis Orchestra's "Spirit of Sunshine", while Rahaan's Billy Nicholls rub is a high-octane, shirts-off treat.

  1. Track 1 (4:43)
  2. Track 2 (5:05)
  3. Track 3 (9:24)
Review: Having dazzled disco lovers via a trio of sold-out 10" singles, the shadowy VEDIT crew delivers their first hand-stamped 12". This time round, the publicity-shy scalpel collective is focused more on left-of-centre synth-pop cuts from the new wave era. Our pick is undoubtedly the epic flipside revision, which takes a particularly wayward and intoxicating mid-'80s cut - think early Chicago house bass, discordant synth horns, experimental dub effects and half-spoken vocals - and turns it into something of an inspired beast. In contrast the two A-side cuts tamper with two slightly better known (though still relatively overlooked) left-of-centre synth-pop gems from 1984 and '85 respectively. They will no doubt get more rotations, but lack the insane thrills of the B-side edit.

Review: Straight off the heat of his last ambitious collaborative opus Starring XVIII, Louie Vega returns with a remarkable disco album in collaboration with Nervous founder Michael Weiss. Inspired by the influential legacy of Sam Records, the album pays homage to the late 70s melting pot with originals, remakes and star appearances from the likes of Luther Vandross. Part 1 runs the gospel gamut with rich feelgood moments such as the First Choice cover "Love Having You Around" and the naughty undertones of Vandross's most upbeat cut in decades "Get Myself Together" and plenty more. And this is only the half of the story. Yet another unique, masterful body of work.

Review: Marcel Vogel's latest on Lumberjacks In Hell welcomes the mighty leftfield NYC MC Sensational to flow over his learned disco house grooves. Sensational sounds right at home on "If You Like," and Vogel gives him a slightly freaked groove to riff on that works just fine. "Brown Curls" taps up Khalil Anthony, one of the finest UK house vocalists in operation right now, and Patchworks remixes it into a dreamy disco funk jam for the boogie brothers and sisters to shake it to. Alma Negra gets busy with "If You Like," creating a tumbling Afro-centric re-rub par excellence, and then Tim Jules comes on board with an instrumental version that nudges into tightly wound funk territory.

  4. Bamboo Room (Ormus mix)
Review: Bamboo Room lands on (Emotional) Especial in a fit of 80s grooves as you would expect to find on the label, but this is in fact the handiwork of debutant duo Duncan Thornley and Laurence Horstman. As Weird Weather they're exploring the fertile hinterland between proto-house, dub abstractions and worldly sounds - they may not be the first to do so, but they sound like complete naturals in this curious bubble. "Sequence 5" is a driving beatdown peppered with space-shaping delays and reverbs, while "Trash Dolphin" takes a cooler approach with some delicate percussive tones and chimes. "Bamboo Room" is a stark, stern beat track fit for a mid 80s cop thriller soundtrack, and the "Ormus Mix" that follows shrugs off most of the drums and heads into satin-lined ambient territory.

"Keep On Lovin' Me" is all about that slinky, molten bassline while "Turn Me Out" fixes our focus more on the Californian band's epic harmonies. Another premium excavation from Be With, we'll keep on lovin' this for a long long time to come.

  1. Looking Up To You (5:21)
  2. Diamond Real (Tee Scott instrumental mix) (7:07)
Review: Probably most known as the hook sampled in Zhane's breakthrough 1993 R&B smash hit "Hey Mr. DJ", it's only in recent years that it has been recognised as being from Michael Wycoff's 1982 sleeper hit "Looking Up To You". Taken from his second album Love Conquers All, Wycoff's short lived solo career sadly hit a dead end shortly after and he apparently went through tough times. That is until getting back on his feet via a new found faith and these days he is a Minister of Music at several Los Angeles area churches. "Looking Up To You" is a timeless soul classic featuring his signature vocal style, a lush string section, an even tighter brass section and powerhouse backing vocal team: you just don't get music like this anymore! B side cut "Diamond Real" (Tee Scott instrumental mix) is a more upbeat boogie number, with P-funk style elements plus neon-lit synths and disco guitar licks - wouldn't have been out of place on the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack actually!

Review: More unearthed disco edits from the godfather of house music Frankie Knuckles, courtesy of the legendary Disco Queen. On the A side we have some rather deep down and dirty blaxploitation vibes (also sampled by Jamie 3:26 on "Dr F**K" several years ago) over a minimal proto-house drum track on "XXX" by XXX. Review: It would be fair to say that Young Pulse has been one of GAMM's most reliable re-editors of recent years. It's now almost four years since he made his debut and in that time he's released a quartet of must-have EPs of disco-fied, soul-fired reworks. Volume five contains just two tracks, but both are - somewhat predictably - very good. A-side "Strong Survive" is a veritable peak-time disco stomper, where punchy horns, soaring orchestration and guttural soul vocals are underpinned by a rambunctious disco-house groove. "Dreaming" sees our Parisian hero stretching out a killer SAM Records cut, making more of the seductive chorus vocals and mazy, jammed-out synth solos.

Review: The high-grade house cuts continue to leak from Ant Plate's studio at an unstoppable rate, this time manifesting as his Yse Saint Laur'ant alias on the Vinyl Only label. The funk is looped up and low down nasty on "I'm Gonna Miss You," while "Persuasion" pings into a foggier head space without losing some of that dusty sample grit. "Dance, Dance, We Dare" is a more disco leaning affair that should sit right on a dancefloor warmed up for a good time. "Track 4" eases back for the run out, hitting a worldly note that could soundtrack a cruise across the open plains of the American deep south.

Marthe Zambo's horn-tooting, key-tickling soul gun "Alu" gets a little tempo touch, a thrust in the kick department and a lavish synth solo breakdown. Meanwhile on the B the latent funk and insistent swing of Nigerian legend Sonny Okosuns' "My Ancestors" is given a perfect and respectful lick of contemporary production paint and a little cosmic polish. Gems on gems on gems: highlights that we guarantee will appeal to your good tastes and dancefloor include the hypnotic vibraphone wash of Cro-Magnon's "Midnight Magic", the slept-on jittering funk of Tatham, Mensah, Lord & Ranks's "Cascade" and Material and Nona Hendrix's ludicrously funky, ultimately sleazy slinker "Over & Over". Review: Many of you may be familiar with "San Sebastian", the 1979 Mediterranean disco slammer that was by far and away the biggest dancefloor hit for Celso Valli's Azoto project. Less well known is the album that it was taken from, Disco Fizz, which here gets a fresh vinyl reissue courtesy of the diggers at Mondo Groove. In some ways, it's typical of Italian disco of the period, taking cues from both electronic European disco (think Giorgio Moroder, Gino Soccio etc.), the hybrid synth-disco/orchestral disco of Rinder and Lewis (see bonkers but brilliant closer "Exalt-Exalt") and driving U.S disco anthems (the previously mentioned "Sal Salvador"). Intrestingly, opener "Fire Fly" sounds like a blueprint for later synth-pop influenced Italo-disco records.

Review: BeachFreaks Records co-founder Charles Bals is a man who knows about records - and obscure European ones at that. Club Meduse, his first compilation for Spacetalk (a label with a track record for producing these kinds of killer, crate-digging comps), is loosely designed as the soundtrack to life around a mythical (IE imaginary) Cote D'Azure resort. Musically, it gathers together the kind of hazy, soft-focus and life-affirming cuts that you would have heard at resort discos in the mid-to-late 1980s. Suffice to say that Bals' selections tend towards the rare, magical and undeniably Balearic, from the glassy-eyed, cascading jazz-funk of the Keyboys and loved-up post-boogie sweetness of Gemini's "Take a Chance", to the sparkling Euro-electro of Miss' "Hip Hop" and pitched-down drum machine chug of Gigi Flag's "Nymphomaniac (Instrumental)". Essential.

Review: Some six years after releasing a limited-edition collection of reworks from his bulging archives, spiritual house maestro Joaquin "Joe" Clausell serves up a sequel. Broadly speaking, the New York-based producer's fine revisions fall into two camps: faithful and reverential re-edits with minimal additional instrumentation (see his ace edit of Methusalem's "Robotism", a spaced-out tweak of disco-boogie epic "Let Me Be The One" and the spiraling San Fran disco madness of "Hot, Hot (Give It All You Got)"), and house-focused hush-hush re-interpretations (the incessant sax loops, bustling bass, wild organ riffs and jacking beats of "Conversation" and more soulful flex of "You Just Can't Smile It Away"). More importantly, all are superb, club-focused revisions that sound like peak-time anthems in waiting.

Review: First time reissue: Christy Essien's fourth album from 1979 is a remarkable piece of work in so many ways. Well-chiselled songs, laced with Christy's signature poetry, a rich afrobeat fluidity runs throughout the arrangement flickering between soft-focus island style ("Respect Your Man"), salubrious foamy funk ("Take Life Easy"), powerful soul ("Understanding") and synth-rippled dancefloor soul ("You Can't Change A Man") Madly she was only 19 when she made this record! No wonder she's known as Nigeria's 'first lady of song'.

Review: Far Out Monster Disco Orchestra, Daniel Maunick and David Brinkworth's whole-hearted tribute to 1970s Brazilian disco, last showcased its celebratory, sun-kissed wares way back in 2014 via an eponymous debut album that's still capable of setting the pulse racing. Black Sun, the outfit's second album, contains another superb selection of authentically played and produced disco songs and instrumentals. Check, for example, the blissful jazz guitars and heavy "walking" bass of "The Two of Us", the richly orchestrated and horn-heavy "Step Into My Life" and the spine-tingling, piano-fired breeziness of "Flying High", whose seductive female vocals are smothered in just the right amount of reverb.

Review: For the latest volume in their crate-digging disco series, Under The Influence, Z Records has turned to long-serving British brothers Simon and Robin Lee AKA Faze Action. In keeping with the series' dusty-fingered ethos, there's plenty of brilliant rarities to set the pulse racing - see the smooth '80s boogie of Leston Paul's "All Nite Tonight", the sublime Afro-disco brilliance of Bebe Manga, the up-tempo hustle of Oscar Perry's "Body Movements" and the South American disco swirl of Don Lurio's "Ruba Ruba" - as well as a smattering of obscure versions of classic dancefloor hits (check Michele Claire's version of "In The Bush"). You'll also find a smattering of killer Faze Action edits, too, with their version of Midway's "Set It Out" and Mikki's freestyle-era boogie ham "Dance Lover" standing out.
