  1. Trust For You
  2. It's Your Time
Review: Nyra fires up his bobbing and weaving Canoe label once more with his sights firmly set on the dancefloor by way of some feisty disco edits shot through with a healthy dose of Detroit-flavoured dust. You could certainly imagine Moodymann having a wonderful time rolling out the looped up, chopped up, irrepressibly funky "Trust For You," epic filter sweeps and all. "It's Your Time" packs a sizable punch in its rhythm section, giving the disco licks, string stabs and brass hits an extra urgency that would slot neatly into a techno set when you need to shed some light on the dungeon boogie.

  1. For The Love Of Money (7:21)
  2. Darlin' Darlin' Baby (Sweet, Tender, Love) (4:18)
Review: Originally released in 1974, "For the Love of Money" is a soul/funk song that was recorded by Philadelphia soul group The O'Jays for the album Ship Ahoy. The lineup at the time comprised of Eddie Levert, William Powell and Walter Williams, It was written and composed by Anthony Jackson, Leon Huff & Kenneth Gamble, and produced on the latter's Philadelphia International Records. The original pressing was issued as a single in late 1973 with "People Keep Tellin' Me" as its B-side. The single peaked at number three on the U.S. Billboard R&B chart, and at No. 9 on Billboard's Pop Singles chart in spring 1974. "For the Love of Money" made the group Grammy Hall of Fame Inductees in 2016.

  1. Sexy Lady
  2. Stop The War
Review: It's coming out on Best Italy, so you know you're in for a rarified treat from the dusty archives of pan European music. On this occasion the unstoppable reissue label has its disco hat on, serving up the "raw cosmic funk" of Oro, recorded in Naples and originally released in 1977. Back then, this crucial cut was confined to a short 7" edit, but Best have pulled the stops out to track down the master tapes and execute a thorough remastering job on the full-length versions, now pressed to 12" for your long-playing, disc-spinning pleasure. It's a good thing these tracks came back into circulation - they capture the best of the late 70s era in a cool, downright funky style that never gets old.

  4. The Funk District - "A Gangster Film" (5:55)
Review: Beatdown disco rework specialists Smokecloud have assembled a crack team of troops for their latest salvo into no-man's-land. Leading the charge and lobbing the first "Disco Grenade" is label chief Osmose, who contributes two tight cuts: loopy, filter-sporting disco chugger "Disco Luv" - a study in ear-pleasing, head-nodding hypnotism rich in musical positivity - and the more up-beat disco-funk thrust of flipside opener "U Promised Me", which sees him make merry with a cheery AOR disco favourite. Elsewhere, Oldchap delivers the obligatory slo-mo disco flier - think 98BPM beats, rising backing vocals, disco-rock grooves and jaunty Rhodes stabs - while The Funk District's "A Gangster Film" is a Blaxploitation-inspired bouncy disco-house treat.

Review: From Paris with love... Denote bosses Oscar return to their Parisian Soul project with two fine French fumeurs. "Enemies" trembles with vibraphone magic and just a little touch of Claussell or perhaps Nuyorican Soul while "Temple Of Disco" dusts off some classic samples and takes a more hip-wriggled route with some serious block rocking rap action. Sacrement bien.

  2. My Love (6:46)
Review: From humble beginnings, putting on parties in an Albanian dive bar in in the city's east end, Toronto's Patchouli Brothers have gone on to hit the big time - holding a residency at rotating disco The Piston called Beam Me Up. Their second 12" for UK label Basic Fingers features two cuts which capture the fervent energy of their popular shindig. On the first side we have "Shout On" which is a low slung funk jam that features a wicked horns section, groovy conga drums and a super sleazy vocal delivery. On the flip side we have the sun-kissed and life affirming soul power of "My Love", a respectful edit which will light up the dancefloor - just wait until that soaring church organ comes rushing in.

Review: Born out of a dingy basement club in Hollywood, Pleasure of Love has grown from an anything goes disco house party, to an adventurous re-edit label. Their edits reflect the spirit of the party and a limited pressing of 300 matches the capacity of the venue that holds it each week. The second release on the label is courtesy of Barcelona's Pau Roca, who serves up some sexy and lo-slung disco on "Liquid" (PR's edit), some spiritualised Afro boogie down business on "Ndlho" (PR's edit) and some sweltering conga action (with a touch of lounge) on the trance inducing "True" (PR's edit).

Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** Originally released in 1976, this piping hot serving of funk from the legendary Philadelphia outfit People's Choice will satisfy many a deep digger out there. Comprised of a revolving cast of musicians but centered around Frankie Brunson, David Thompson, Darnell Jordan and Marc Reed, the band presented one of their true finest on the electric groove of "Here We Go Again" which bursts at the seams with its fervent soul power. All creamy Rhodes, sing-along vocals and conga drums galore. On the flip, they go for something more lo-slung on the James Brown influenced "Jam, Jam, Jam" (All Night Long) featuring some hot guitar licks and a truly roaring vocal delivery.

  1. Song For You (PPA rework) (3:55)
  2. Green Machine (PPA rework) (4:17)
Review: We were blown away by Prescription Pricing Authority's first jazz-funk and Latin-fuelled 7" on GAMM, so hopes are sky-high for this speedy follow-up. On the A-side the London twosome get busy with the soulful sunshine that is Florida outfit Popcorn's exceedingly hard-to-find "Song For You", which sounds like the sort of breezy and loved-up gem you'd like to take home to meet your mother. Turn to the flip for some tougher dancefloor business: a jaunty, tight, on-point and slightly dubbed-out rearrangement of O'Donel Levy's synth-laden 1976 jazz-funk smasher "Green Machine". We're not sure exactly who the Prescription Pricing Authority boys (or girls) are, but they've certainly got digging and editing skills.

Review: GAMM has been responsible for some killer re-edits over the years, though we're struggling to think of any that are quite as good as Prescription Pricing Authority's killer tweak of Carlos Ramanos's "1-2-1". Noticeably heavier and crisper than the original, the rearrangement utilizes a touch of delay at crucial moments and wisely makes more of the fantastic bassline and percussion breaks. Speaking of ace basslines, you'll find a heavy dose of slap bass on the flip, where PPA turns his or her hand to Kathryn Moses's flute-sporting jazz-funk wig-out, "Lucky Duck". It is, of course, killer, though lacks the sheer celebratory rush of the on-point A-side.

The Dresden native's next dancefloor bomb is "Dished" (Male Stripper) for Australian imprint Club Sweat. This mash-up of Man Parrish and Ellis D is a roaring and neon-lit disco inferno that's sure to burn up a dancefloor near you soon. Review: Israeli duo Red Axes have been on their travels, stopping off in far-flung locations to record with local musicians and create thrillingly wayward new cross-cultural hybrids. The first fruits of these labours can be heard on Trips #1: Africa, a 12" that contains music made with players and singers from Ethiopia and the Ivory Coast. Our highlight is probably rubbery-but-rolling A-side "Abidjan (featuring Yakomin)", where boisterous hand percussion solos, mazy xylophone lines and jaunty accordion blasts dance evocatively above a typically chunky rhythm track. Also worth checking is "Musica Electronique (featuring Insaac Students)", a brilliant fusion of raw analogue bass, bustling Afro-tech beats, psychedelic electronics and bold African vocals.

Review: Since joining Star Creature back in 2016, audio-visual twosome Shiro Schwarz has proved to be one of the label's most reliable and prolific artists. The male/female duo are old hands when it comes to crafting authentic synth-funk and P-funk-influenced '80s soul, so it's no surprise to find that their latest 7" is sublime. On the A-side you'll find "Under The Moonlight", a buzzing, Zapp-influenced number rich in slick vocals, ear-pleasing talkbox passages, D-train synth squiggles and all manner of sun-kissed guitar flourishes. B-side "Power of Love" has a more mid-'80s AM radio feel, with the duo's usual glassy-eyed vocals and colourful synthesizer motifs being joined by dreamy digital synth chords and an all-round loved-up vibe.

Review: A warm welcome back to Los Angeles artist Eddie Ruscha, who here dons the familiar Secret Circuit alias for the first time in two years. Opener "Stomping Ground" sets the tone, delivering Rushca's usual balance between colourful psychedelia, acid-fired dancefloor haziness and swirling Balearic bliss. In contrast, "Crazy Ways" is a slow and druggy affair, with ghostly electronics rising above a throbbing, analogue disco groove. Flipside "Hedz" is a loose-limbed slab of electronic Tropicana full of delay-laden Afro-beat guitar flourishes and eyes-closed electronic marimba melodies, while "The Feather Drop" is a weirder, rougher and altogether odder mix of wild acid lines, sharp electronics and San Francisco style dub house rhythms.

  3. Wake, Bake & Shake
Review: REPRESS ALERT: The unstoppable march of Dan Shake continues apace as he storms Lumberjacks HQ with some of that refined sample-a-delic house music that is fast making him a marquee booking for those who want their party started right. He sounds right at home on "Magic Marcel", throwing down an addictive bass hook and looping up the woozy romanticism of classic disco and filter house into a thoroughly potent brew. "The Bee Won" takes a more urgent approach, reaching towards a kind of jazz funk energy with some tumbling percussion shaken into the mix for good measure. Taking a cooler approach to round the record off, "Wake, Bake & Shake" lets the funk take centre stage and leaves the samples plain as day for that breezy Sunday afternoon feeling.

Review: Return to 2001: Swiss brothers Shakedown drop an iconic house anthem that debunked the standard XXL funk du jour with a much spacier, synth-based 80s boogie sound. Still relevant and heavily played, Defected have commissioned three on-point artists for the 2018 contemporisations: Peggy Gou gets her acid tweaks on, Tiger & Woods pitch down the vocal and dust off the Street Sounds electroid feel and Purple Disco Machine cooks up an unapologetic funked up house jam that wouldn't have gone amiss on Classic back in the day. For good measure Shakedown return with their own signature Galactic Boogie version that pumps with strong Moroder tendencies. Good night.

Review: Not only has it been some 15 years since The Shapeshifters bothered the pop charts with soaring disco-house anthem "Lola's Theme", but also nearly a decade since their last vinyl single. Appearing on a tasty seven-inch single, this two-tracker for Glitterbox features some of their strongest work since those halcyon days. A-side "Try My Love On (For Size)" is arguably the duo's most "pure" disco cut to date - a classic production that boasts rising horns, sweeping strings and a strong, Salsoul-esque vocal from Teni Tinks. Turn to the flip for the more relaxed and groovy "When Love Breaks Down", a future end-of-night anthem that's as poignant as it is uplifting.

There's a hefty dose of soul pouring out of these cuts, leading in with the synth-tastic sweep of "Dream Merchant" before "Hawaiian Love Song" slides in with some seductive Rhodes licks and romantic vocals. "Magik Mountain" is blue-eyed boogie of the highest calibre, and "Yeah Yeah Yeah" edges a little understated disco into the mix for long, balmy nights dancing under the moon with your beloved.

Review: Throughout his long and distinguished career, Luke Solomon has not made a record quite as disco-fired as "Light You Up". In its' original form, the track wraps spoken word verses from beat poet Queen Rose and chorus vocals from bourbon-loving Brooklyn singer Amy Douglas around a killer Blaxploitation-era disco-funk groove. It's hooky, heavy and suitably celebratory, with lyrics (heard even clearer on the included Acappella version) that fit the simmering sexuality at the heart of the best disco records. If that's not enough to excite you (though it really should be), check out Louie Vega's remix. Here, the Masters at Work producer drops an extended disco revision that's breezier, groovier and full of superb musicianship.

Review: Soul Clap definitely knew what they were doing when they snapped up certifiable diva legend Nona Hendryx to sing on one of the cuts from their self-titled 2016 album. Now Ray Mang has got his mitts on the parts to "Shine (This Is It)" and turned out three versions for his own Mangled label - the classic combination of extended vocal, instrumental and radio edit versions. Whichever cut suits you best, the vibe is the same; a bold and bright summer party track splashed with horns, keys and plenty more besides, although the smart money is on Hendryx's legendary vocal, which soars as though no time has passed since her days working with Material in 80s NYC.

Review: Philpot Records maestro Soulphiction may not have appeared on Lumberjacks In Hell before, but he's cited as a big influence on the label, and here the Stuttgart-based artist gets four chances to unfurl his deft instinct for dusty, soul and funk-infused house music. "Stick Up" gets the MPC grooves and twisting bass licks rolling beautifully, while "B3B4URD1" injects a little Afro-flavoured funk into the mix with another addictive low end flex. "Acid Test" pours a little more jack into the pot without losing that crooked Soulphiction flavour, and then "Dirty Hot" does a mean job of teaching all newcomers how to really do an edit.

Review: The latest 12" from happy-go-lucky Croatian re-edit crew Legalize Lambada comes from debutant Sputnik, a Moscow-based artist who previously contributed cuts to the first two That's A Steal EPs. As you'd expect, the four edits showcased here tend towards the eccentric, certainly in terms of their obscure and quirky source material. Opener "Superlove" is a skewed slab of bouncy, proto-house era Balearic synth-pop, while "Feeling Fine" is a White Isle friendly slow jam rich in parping jazz-funk horns, cascading synthesizer solos, clipped guitars and dub-wise bass. Flip for the European reggae-disco flex of "Groove Me" and "Rick", a drowsy, slo-mo shuffler full of synth-reggae rhythms, multi-tracked AOR pop vocals and cheery digital synth melodies.

Review: Editorial sub-label Clandestine Boogie welcomes Sunner Soul, a Russian producer more famous for delivering a deluge of digital-only edit EPs over the last decade. He's in fine form here, though, delivering a string of original productions that tend towards the deep and musically rich. Title track "Voyager 84" is particularly good and delivers a sun-kissed, Balearic-minded blend of deep house electronics, shuffling samba-house beats and starry, intergalactic melodies. The accompanying Kim & Buran mix is far bolder and more synth-heavy in tone, sitting somewhere between '80s boogie and cheerful nu-disco. Scruscru lends a hand on the B-side, first assisting Sunner Soul with the nu-disco/disco-house fusion of "Spring Mood", and then the deliciously jazzy and sample-heavy peak-time bounce of "Joy".
