Family (reissue) (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: AS 849P. Rel: 16 May 18
  1. Family (Stereo version) (7:33)
  2. Family (mono version) (7:33)
Review: Despite being something of a confirmed jazz-funk classic, Hubert Laws' "Family" was never released on a 12" single first time around. Curiously, the full version - contained on the A-side of this edition - only ever appeared on the veteran flautist's 1980 album of the same name. It remains, particularly in its original stereo mix form, a superb summer breeze of a jam, with a loved-up female vocal and punchy orchestration riding a sumptuous mid-tempo groove rich in rubbery slap bass and lolloping drumbeats. On the flipside you'll find the more obscure Mono Version, which interestingly feels a little weightier at the bottom end whilst allowing Laws' superb flute solos space to breathe.

  1. Children Song (5:23)
  2. Video Track (7:02)
Review: Fresh from dropped an EP of killer edits on Bahnsteig23 under the alternative Beard in Dust alias, Leonid Lipelis pops up on Aussie imprint Animals Dancing. Happily, the cheekily named I Did These For Myself But Now It's For Everyone contains some of the Moscow-based producer's best material yet. Check, in particular, melodious A-side "Children Song", where sampled Japanese children's chants rise above a snappy, delay heavy drum machine groove and a Marimba style melody. Over on side B, "Video Track" is a similarly jaunty and positive affair, with more Kalimba style melodies and African chants weave in and out of a fuzzy, hybrid deep house/nu-disco backing track. While not as instantly arresting as the A-side, it's nevertheless an impressive dancefloor workout.

  1. Makin It Hot (4:34)
  2. Makin It Hot (Matt Hughes remix) (5:17)
  3. Sparkle (5:35)
  4. Sparkle (Dave Allison remix) (5:56)
Review: Back in 2016 we waxed lyrical about the synth-funk focused debut album from Liquid Pegasus, a producer who could well become a major force on the nu-boogie scene in years to come. Here he presents his first solo single since, a notably vibrant, colourful and sun-kissed affair that regularly reaches rush-inducing levels of positivity. Check the meandering synth-bass, sparkling stabs and eyes-closed jazz guitar solos of "Makin' It Hot". "Sparkle" is deeper, more laidback and a touch more disco-fied - whilst of course emphasizing bold boogie synths - but also superb. Dave Allison does a great job slightly upping the tempo and increasing the Balearic factor on his "Sparkle" remix, while Matt Hughes take on "Makin' It Hot" is arguably sturdier and more club-ready than Liquid Pegasus' original version.

  1. Plastic People (vocal) (3:17)
  2. Plastic People (instrumental) (3:15)
Review: Frequently seen passing hands for large sums, Tony Kalangis's 1974 supreme groove cut "Plastic People" gets a long overdue reissue. Its writhing funk groove a seminal standard for collectors lucky enough to have it, Tony's falsetto and slippery guitar work are as timeless now as they were almost 45 years ago. And the instrumental still bangs, too. Funk realism: The only thing plastic here is the wax.

Is It All Over My Face? (heavyweight vinyl 12" repress)
Cat: WES 2015001. Rel: 08 Jun 18
  1. Is It All Over My Face? (Kon duet mix) (8:38)
  2. Is It All Over My Face? (unreleased single female vocal version) (3:11)
  3. Is It All Over My Face? (original unreleased full length version) (11:57)
Review: Arthur Russell and Steve D'Aquisto's legendary 1980 club anthem has always been shrouded with stories when it comes to unreleased and alternative cuts. And West End have just added a whole load of fuel to the hype fire. Two versions and brand new edit: taking Arthur's original genuinely loose instrumentation and raw funk (as opposed to Levan's more famous stripped back club-ready takes that took the centre stage), both the female and male versions are here in all their extended, unreleased glory. For added measure, edit king Kon has crafted a duet cut that fuses both versions into one gloriously slack, free-flowing groove. We're all over this record.

  1. Is It All Over My Face? (Female vocal) (6:54)
  2. Is It All Over My Face? (Male vocal) (9:58)
Review: There's no doubt that Loose Joints' "Is It All Over My Face" is something of a disco classic; arguably, it's one of those records that any discerning disco DJ should have in his or her collection. This reissue features both the popular "Female" and lesser-known "Male" versions - the latter blessed with arguably better percussion and thrillingly eccentric horns but worse vocals - in remastered form. The re-master only serves to highlight the quirkiness and looseness of Arthur Russell and company's playing and Steve D'Aquisto and Russell's deft production. If it's not in your collection, it should be - if only for the celebratory eccentricity of one of disco's baggiest anthems.

Review: Last year, we got a bit giddy with excitement over MIC's first two releases, which presented lost music from a 1980s drum machine enthusiast and a swathe of new cuts from Glaswegian cold-wave oddballs LAPS. The label's first missive of 2018 comes from rising star Lord Tusk and is every bit as good as its predecessors. Taken as a whole, it's rather hard to pigeonhole, featuring as it does tracks that variously fuse together sounds variously associated with post-punk dub, weirdo deep house, turn of the '90s London dub house (check the brilliant "Don't Be Shy"), the Art of Noise ("Beyond Limitation") and the dream house/dusty breakbeat fusions we've come to expect from Project Pablo and Jayda G ("Champion Lovers"). Throughout, it remains spaced-out, fuzzy and eccentric.

  1. 123 (9:55)
  2. 456 (8:02)
  3. 789 (6:13)
Review: When it comes to crafting quality edits of ludicrously obscure cuts, few can match long-serving scalpel fiend Loud-E. Having previously plied his wares on Ambassador's Reception and Berceuse Heroique's occasional re-edit series, the Netherlands-based producer has been recruited by Leeds-based, Balearic-minded imprint Passport to Paradise. Predictably, there's much to enjoy throughout, not least the trippy backwards effects, rubbery boogie bassline, starburst electronics and locked-in drums of extended cosmic disco workout "123". Elsewhere, Loud-E chops up some chiming, glassy-eyed, instrumental Balearic synth-pop on "456", before unleashing some wild and weird electronics on the out-of-this-world madness of "789".

  1. Track 1 (9:38)
  2. Track 2 (7:15)
Review: We're not quite sure who is behind the new Love Saves The Day edit series, but we can tell that they've been studying classic scalpel rubs. You see, both the untitled reworks showcased on the series' first 12" are subtly re-mastered dancefloor rearrangements of the kind that could have been done back in the day on reel-to-reel tape. On side A, the unknown editors brilliantly play around with Atmosfear's "Dancing in Outer Space", teasing out the percussion before dropping into the familiar, horn-heavy refrain. Meanwhile on the reverse, Tamiko Jones' breathy, synth-laden disco smoker "Can't Live Without Your Love" is given an extra-sleazy tweak. Proper re-edits by, and for, those who respect the classics.

  1. Dove Sei (original Deep mix) (5:44)
  2. Dove Sei (Raiders Of The Lost Arp remix) (7:18)
  3. Dove Sei (SIRS cut) (7:59)
Review: Sebastien Doring - better known as veteran deep house and disco fusionist Lovebirds - has been pretty quiet of late, by his previously prolific standards at least. Happily, his first single of 2018 is one of his strongest releases to date. "Dove Sei" was seemingly inspired by Tullio de Piscopo's Balearic classic "Stop Bajon (Primavera)", though the A-side "Original Deep Mix" is far dreamier and synthesizer-heavy than that cut, and is underpinned by a particularly chugging electronic groove. The Raiders of the Lost Arp mix, rich in glistening but urgent guitar riffs and jazzy Rhodes solos, is arguably the pick of the pair, though SIRS' more Italo-disco influenced take is also rather tasty.

  6. Come On Down (3:12)
Review: Since serving up a tasty debut album back in 2011, Magic In Threes has provided sporadic dose of funk-fuelled delight that variously draws influence from jazz-funk and soul. The three original tracks included on the combo's first Razor 'N' Tape reserve appearance fit this formula, layering up live horns, guitars and drums with loose and heavy results. Title track "Work Tapes" is a Blaxpolitation funk affair with subtle disco flavours, "Come On Down" is an Isaac Hayes style orchestrated disco-funk roller, and the superbly summery "Chupa Cabra" sounds like it could have been made in Brazil around 1979. All three tracks are given the remix treatment, with Patchworks' Afrobeat revision of "Work Tapes" and Fouk's hybrid jazz-funk/disco-house version of "Chupa Cabra" standing out.

  1. Do I Do (7:15)
  2. Do I Do (instrumental) (6:32)
Review: It's fair to say that Maurice's McGee's "Do I Do" is something of an Italo-disco classic. It was initially released back in 1983 on Full Time Records, and featured the man himself - seemingly an invented alias for a local Genova singer recruited by the prolific Studio G production team - telling a tale of missed parties and late night opportunities over a backing track that sits somewhere between the all-arpeggio grooves of Italian disco and the slick, synth-heavy warmth of '83 New York boogie. On this timely reissue, the extended vocal version (remastered to sound extra loud) is accompanied by the arguably superior Instrumental take, which wisely highlights clipped disco guitars and the superb, synth-heavy groove.

  3. Amsterdam Experience (Kalbata edit) (7:05)
Review: Tel-Aviv's Fortuna Records are doing their nation proud by releasing an impressive volume of native music, both old and new, that is sounding perfectly relevant in this day and age. More than anything, it's just great music that most of us haven't heard yet. For instance, their previous effort - a timely reissue of Tsvia Abarbanel's Eastern Soul - was an invaluable snapshot of Israeli femininity across the ages, while this reincarnation of Shimson Miel's acid-rock output from 2007 is a clear nod to the man's visionary style, more than a decade ago. "Amsterdam Experience" is the stand-out track, a bundle of loose, percussive waves that verge on the electronic while still sounding organic and improvisational. Much the same, "Nueiba Nueiba" is a delightful slice of deep-minded exotica, and Kalbata's edit of "Amsterdam Experience" provides a more wholesome slew of beats to the original.

Celebrating her 1995 album Ihu: Todos os Sons, a collection of tribe songs from northern Brazil, the Jaboti tribe's "Tchori Tchori" is a shimmering, reflective trip laced with staccato, bird-like vocals and chiming harmonic percussion. Enticing, beguiling and ripe for remix extension from Rio's Joutro Mundo on the B. Beautiful.

Review: Legendary German DJ/producer David "Move D" Moufang first appeared on Electric Minds back in 2013. "To The Disco '77" was an undoubted highlight of that 12" and here gets the remix treatment from the man himself. His "Live Rework" is a wonderfully loose and lucid affair, with quietly jazzy guitars, New Jersey garage organs and headline-grabbing vocal samples wrapping themselves around foreboding, low-end chords and nifty, on the fly drum machine programming. On the flip, Moufang joins forces with Mister Saturday Night man Justin Carter for "Leaves (Basement Demo)", a wonderfully deep, rich and spacey house cut that recalls the long-serving German producer's intelligent techno era output (albeit with the added warmth of head-in-the-clouds deep house).

Review: There's no doubting that Idris Muhammad's "Could Heaven Ever Be Like This" is a stone-cold classic; a sparkling, heavenly chunk of dreamy, disco-era jazz-funk that's capable of reducing grown men and women to tears when played at the right time. Some could argue that it's so good that it shouldn't be tampered with. Late Nite Tuff Guy, a producer who previous for reworking classic cuts, clearly disagrees, because he's delivered a fresh 2018 revision. His version is actually rather reverential, subtly beefing up the bottom end to provide a little more a rolling disco feel while adding some easy-to-mix beats at the beginning. Otherwise, he's made use of all the key original instrumentation and should be applauded for his tasteful efforts.

Balearic soul and international disco through and through, track one rattles with a little Afrofunk energy, track two has more of a Latin sunset feel while the final track is a swooning, mooning sweep into crazy town with some strong psychedelic textures. Spacy, singular and special: You won't want to mute these for a long time.

Review: Myd made his name a few years back by delivering a string of dancefloor hits that joined the dots between African rhythms, techno, electro and humid tropical instrumentation. All Inclusive, which appears on luscious transparent blue vinyl, is not only his first single for Ed Banger, but also a far more hazy, sun-kissed and pop-centric affair. In essence, the three original tracks - "The Sun", "Bingo" and "All Inclusive" - are breezy and louche affairs, mixing the producer's own drowsy vocals and gentle rhythms, tropical guitars and loved-up electronics. More club-ready reworks can be found on the flip, where Cassius stick a gargantuan bassline and UK steppers-inspired house drums beneath "Bingo" and Canblaster re-cast "All Inclusive" as a bouncy tropical house anthem.

Big juicy synths that flap and fold over a nicely slouched groove; this will aid and abet many people looking to lose their minds this summer. "Sun" is also fittingly titled thanks to its premium vibrancy and latent feels (not to mention a wry bit of slap bass) Remix-wise Tronik Youth get all dubbed out on "Spacetak" while Jonny Sender whips us back to early 2000s City Rockers vibes with some superb use of the trumpet elements. A-side "Blow Your Mind", a talkbox-sporting P-funk jam that reminded us of early '80s era Roger Troutman releases - all stabbing, kaleidoscopic synth motifs, colourful solos, punchy machine drums and lyrics celebrating "funk" - is particularly special, sounding as it does like a genuine relic of a bygone era. Almost as good is flipside P-funk instrumental "Virgin Lion", which sounds a little like an instrumental revision of the A-side with added flash-funk guitars and D-Train style synth doodles.

Painel De Controle begins with a Waxist mix of "Relax", a chilled-out boogie monster with sultry vocals, while "Ripa Na Xulipa" by Rabo De Saia is more uplifting and heavy on the disco strings. 1. Enemies (7:02)
  2. Temple Of Disco (7:13)
Review: From Paris with love... Denote bosses Oscar return to their Parisian Soul project with two fine French fumeurs. "Enemies" trembles with vibraphone magic and just a little touch of Claussell or perhaps Nuyorican Soul while "Temple Of Disco" dusts off some classic samples and takes a more hip-wriggled route with some serious block rocking rap action. Sacrement bien.
