Number One/Look Into My Eyes (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: REG 020. Rel: 22 Oct 18
  1. Number One
  2. Look Into My Eyes
Review: Mangled Records twentieth release also marks 20 years since it's first release.
To celebrate the occasion here are two of Ray Mang's better known and loved tracks
together on one 180gram Mangled 12" for you!
Number One first surfaced on his solo debut '96 Noid release. It gained widespread
support in the clubs and went on to be featured on both DFP's De-Luxe House Of
Funk and Groove Armada's Back To Mine compilations as well as his own Mangled
LP.
Look Into My Eyes is a blissed out Balearic gem that featured on the B side of Ray's
'10 DFA release and instantly became a firm favourite for many.

  1. Shake Your Body Down (To The Ground) (full vocal club mix) (5:48)
  2. Shake Your Body Down (To The Ground) (Dubbed Out voxapella mix) (5:33)
Review: We're not quite sure who's behind the Redux Inc series - naturally, they're keeping their heads down - but we can confirm that this debut 12" is rather tasty. As the title makes clear, both cuts are dancefloor-minded reworks of one of the most celebrated, disco-era Jacksons tunes. The A-side "Full Vocal Club Mix" is effectively a tasty dancefloor extension/re-edit with a few subtle new touches and a lightly tightened beat that should make mixing a whole lot easier. The flipside "Dubbed Out Voxapella Mix" is slightly more revolutionary, with the Redux Inc. crew bringing the beat in and out while the acapella and key musical ingredients (the song's familiar piano refrain and horn lines, specifically) take centre stage.

  1. Jambo (7:57)
  2. Jambo (extended dub) (8:14)
Review: One of New York City's finest DJs and editors is back with more killer reworks. Jacques Renault takes time out from his popular Let's Play House Imprint to serve up the new one for Parisians Stamp. This follows up resplices by Harrison BDP, Swayzak and Man Power. 'Tom bo li de say de moi ya, yeah, jumbo jumbo?' Never mind - but rest assured that "Jambo" will have you getting down all-night-long on this edit of a timeless classic. For the more daring amongst you who hope to venture deeper into the night, we'd absolutely recommend the extended dub on the flip - this one will totally get the heads down.

  1. Back (5:05)
  2. Echo (7:44)
  3. The Illusion (7:06)
Review: Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's Salary Boy, the Mall Grab protege who, like money, never sleeps. Here, the financially astute superhero finally gets his chance on his mentor's Steel City Dance Discs label following promising outings on Astropical and Shadow City. Opener "Back", a gloriously cheery, hot-stepping house cut built around chunky bass and carefully chosen disco and hip-hop samples, sounds like a theme tune to his financial misadventures, while fellow A-side cut "Echo" wraps sunny synth riffs and sunset electronics around a two-step influenced deep house groove. All superhero movies build to a breathtakingly positive conclusion, and our hero does, too, with B-side "The Illusion" peppering a bouncy, U.S garage style rhythm track with similarly funk bass, cut-up vocal samples and some seriously poignant piano lines.

  3. Sartorial - "Music Power" (6:45)
  4. Sartorial - "At Midnight" (6:30)
Review: London disco/funk/house label Tropical Disco returns, with their second edition of edits and disco remixes: courtesy of Cheshire's Simon Kennedy and London's Alex Sartori aka DJ Sartorial. They team up in tandem for a respectful remix of a right classic on "Can't Be Me": featuring the same familiar hook that J.B. Boogie used last year on Springbok. The rest of the way it's all about Sartorial - who flies solo for the remainder of the release; an edit of a classic Saint Tropez track as sampled by Moodymann on "Sunday Morning" and Black Booby more recently on "Know The Times". Finally, there's yet another golden oldie by a certain funk and disco group from the Bahamas entitled "At Midnight" and there's no guesses as to who that one's by.

  4. My Babe (6:08)
Review: La Vie D'Artiste founder Sebb Junior returns to the controls with more senior sounds. Pure filtered disco soul, loopy and hypnotic; each cut digs deep into his country's rich house legacy. "U Got Dat Vibe" kicks off with silky effect and crucially applied vocal sample, elsewhere "Good Vibes" lives up to its name with an infectious vocal loop and swollen synth bulging underneath, "Don't Play That" plays the instant party heater with its classic hook sample and loose limbed jacking shuffle while "My Babe" takes another iconic vocal and twists it into the groove so tightly it feels like it was meant to be. The summers still not over while records like this are being released...

Review: Simon Marlin returns the source with one of his biggest tracks as The Shapeshifters in years. Loaded with the belting gospel-level charm of the currently unavoidable Teni Tinks (who's also sung and recorded with the likes of Dr Packer, Ghetts and Stormzy) it's an authentic nod to the enduring legacy of late 70s Salsoul or T.K Disco. Soulful, singalong, oozing positivity and tailored strictly for the dancefloor; this has been huge at all Glitterball and Defected parties this summer. Try it on for size...

  4. Disco Samba (LCO instrumental rework) (4:57)
Review: The latest missive from the Imagenes camp sees Los Charley's Orchestra rework two tracks from Manana, a Spiteri side project that released one jazz-fusion/samba disco album in 1981. Both "Amor" and "Disco Samba" are taken from that obscure but inspired set, and are here given "vocal" and "instrumental" revisions from the Los Charly's boys. All four revisions hit the spot from start to finish. We're particularly enjoying the spacey synths, low-slung dub disco grooves, fluttering vocals and well-placed delay effects of their "Amor" versions, though many DJs may gravitate towards the rolling, AOR disco bounce of the duo's more celebratory remixes of "Disco Samba".

  4. Hallelujah Anyway (FK Director cut Signature Praise 12" edit) (6:57)
Review: Candi Staton's gospel-fired "Hallelujah Anyway" has a long and complex history. Over the years it has appeared in countless different forms, with this Glitterbox edition pairing two 2012 reworks with a couple of fresh rubs. In the latter category you'll find a deliciously bouncy and loved-up interpretation from Dr Packer that sounds like a late '80s Frankie Knuckles remix, and a "Classic Club Vibe" version by Moplen that dips the tempo and doffs a cap to early '90s New Jersey garage and gospel-house. Also worth a listen is Frankie Knuckles' luscious 2012 "Directors Cut Signature Praise" version, while there's also a fresh airing of Larse's chugging and dreamy deep house take.

  3. If You Wanna Be A Beggar (4:05)
  4. Somebody's Watching (4:02)
Review: What began as a reissue of their long lost album Rude Movements by BBE in 2016, then the lost tapes of Mike Collins last year, has now led to more unreleased excavations from Brit funk pioneers SunPalace. Four in total, each track tells its own singular inherently UK tale; "Dancing The Night Away" is an upbeat disco thumper with shades of proto house creeping in on the choruses and "Love, Love, Love" hits with new romantic saviour faire. Meanwhile on the flip "If You Wanna Be A Beggar" fuses pub ready vocals, laced with hint of 80s boogie, over playful Afrofunk beats while "Somebody's Watching" closes on a Cure-like mournful funk note (albeit with slightly creepy lyrics). Sunny side up!

  1. Love Sensation (7" version) (4:13)
  2. Love Sensation (acappella) (3:35)
Review: A quick glance at the epic list of credits accompanying this Su Su Bobien single confirms its impressive musical credentials. Produced by DJ Spen, Thommy Davis and Michelle Chiavainni, it's a cover of Loleatta Holloway disco classic "Love Sensation" featuring specially recorded strings, horns, drums, bass and guitar. It's pretty faithful to the Salsoul original all told, even down to Tony Montana's string arrangement, though it does feel a little looser, warmer and groovier than Holloway's full throttle take. The brilliance of Bobien's vocal is confirmed by the flipside acapella, which boasts just the right amount of delay and reverb to get the hairs on the back of your neck standing to attention.

Coming straight from the heart of Manchester's groove scene alongside the likes of Red Laser and Hi Tackle, both cuts lollop with a rough funk charm. "C60 Lato A" is cosmic Afrofunk re-weave with a beat that refuses to quit while "Get Serious" lives up to its name with steamy, sleazy results. Talk to us.

  2. Jump Trax (111 BPM To 125 BPM) (5:29)
Review: Pivotal proto house music from the Chicago motherland; Duane Thamm Jr's 1984 12" was revolutionary as he provided two killer transition pieces that would have been gold dust to DJs at the time. The titles explain themselves; A side jump track "125 BPM To 107 BPM" takes us from a euphoric Italo hook to a sultry smouldering vocal finale while B side jump track "111 BPM to 125 BPM" goes from theatrical and a little trippy to an all out disco explosion. Good transition tracks are still hard to find but this would have blown minds back in 1984. A serious piece of history right here.

Review: On the fourth edition of his acclaimed Deep In India series, Todh Teri revives Indian cinematic sounds that are reworked for modern dancefloors. The mysterious producer then merges said aesthetics with house, acid and funk. The edits preserve the original flavors of these beloved classics, while making them current. On the A side of this volume, we have some explosive carnival vibes that are perfect for street parties, alongside what sounds like a classic Bollywood anthem mashed up with some sick 303 acid. On the flip, prepare to delve deep into the exotic with two hypnotic efforts. In particular the B2 which is a sleazy/woozy slow burner that's perfect for playing during the later hours.

Their releases range from signature soft rock and AOR to disco, boogie and deep house. The aforementioned Ryan is also one half of the duo Superprince with Jeffrey Levi Fry, who are known for their sharp productions and remixes heard on labels like Moulton Music or Razor-N-Tape - and like on the latter they impress yet again with this collection of respectful edits. Review: Since contributing a debut cut to Whiskey Disco's multi-artist "Disco Darling" EP in 2015, Vincenzo De Bull has gone on to contribute tracks to similar 12" singles on Queen and Disco and Kolour Ltd. This is the producer's first solo salvo and it's well worth picking up, not least for the loopy, filter rich disco-house celebration that is peak-time smasher "Champ 1". The fun continues elsewhere across the EP, from the smooth, boogie-goes-house sensuality of "In Love", to the rubbery bounce of "That Same Old Feeling", a chunky revision of a dewy-eyed disco-funk number full of rolling beats, tactile vocal samples and crunchy Clavinet lines.

Review: It would be fair to say that Young Pulse has been one of GAMM's most reliable re-editors of recent years. It's now almost four years since he made his debut and in that time he's released a quartet of must-have EPs of disco-fied, soul-fired reworks. Volume five contains just two tracks, but both are - somewhat predictably - very good. A-side "Strong Survive" is a veritable peak-time disco stomper, where punchy horns, soaring orchestration and guttural soul vocals are underpinned by a rambunctious disco-house groove. "Dreaming" sees our Parisian hero stretching out a killer SAM Records cut, making more of the seductive chorus vocals and mazy, jammed-out synth solos.

Review: French producer Yuksek has released rather a lot of music over the last 15 years, though this appears to be his first ever collection of re-edits. You'll want to check tasty opener "How I Love To Dance", a lolloping rendition of a quirky and obscure disco number rich in Patrick Adams style instrumentation and well-placed dub delays, while the drum-heavy "The Beat" features waves of wonky percussion, a pulsating bassline and plenty of sweaty FX. Elsewhere, "Think Of You" is a head-bobbing revision of an AOR disco/disco-rock cut that sounds like it could have been re-edited by Eric Duncan, and "Dance In Disco" is a seductive Gallic disco chugger rich in heavily accented English vocals and jazzy electric piano solos.

Review: Later this year, crate-digging specialists Cordial Recordings is set to release an album of previously unheard recordings by cult German jazz-fusion combo Afrodisia. To get us in the mood, the London-based label has decided to reissue the band;s sole previous album, 1980's Elephant Sunrise. While the album is best known for the impeccable jazz-funk sweetness of "Sugar Free" - recorded, like much of the rest of the album, by a mixture of locals and guest musicians from a nearby U.S army base - there's much to enjoy throughout, from the psychedelic heaviness of opener "TMFF" and elastic dancefloor workout "Psychic Summers", to the slap-bass-propelled funk-rock of "Wild Turkey" and intense, full-throttle closer "Zugabe (Encore)".

Review: Should you stumble on an original copy of N'Draman Blintch's 1980 album Cosmic Sounds for sale, it would cost you upwards of 1,000 Pounds. This, then, is a much-needed reissue. It contains four fine cuts that showcase the Ivory Coast-born musician's distinctively intergalactic take on Afro-disco, where spacey electronics and mazy synth lines rise above bustling, high octane grooves. The album does contain one decidedly laidback and loved-up slow jam - closer "She Africa (Ton Tour Viendra)" - but it's the celebratory brilliance of the set's dancefloor workouts that most impress. Check, in particular, the anthem-like strut of title track "Cosmic Sounds" and the hot-to-trot, solo-laden Afro-disco explosion that is opener "Self Destruction".

Review: Produced and sleeked out at Opal Studios in NYC, back in 1975, Buari's self-titled LP has been a cornerstone of international highlife music since it was first released. The original is now an arduous item to find at a decent price, so we thanks the Be With label for having repackaged an essential Afro LP that is a must have for anyone into anything outside a constant beat drum. "Karam Bani" opens with a forceful helping of funk, percussive to to the max, and this same hypnotic groove formula is present across the entirety of the A-side, making this a sampler's dream come true. On the flip, "Iro Le Pa" is the stand-out tune for us, a rhythm that makes Theo Parrish's Ugly Edits seems kinda tame! Recommended.
