  1. Don't Let My Rainbow Pass Me By (4:41)
  2. Track 2 (4:43)
Review: One of many stone-cold Patrick Adams disco funk gems, 1981's "Don't Let My Rainbow Pass Me By" enjoys a long-awaited reissue 37 years after its last outing. Its sprightly slippery groove and floating falsettos remain as strong and as a vital as they ever did... But at a fraction of the once triple-figure price tag it's had over the years. Don't let this record pass you by.

  1. Absolute (7:54)
  2. Limoncello (8:08)
  3. Absolute (Whatever Whatever remix) (6:27)
Review: The Whiskey Pickle crew turn their attention to a new partnership from Steve Cobby and Laurie Welton, the former being known for decades of DJing, label management and producing alongside the likes of Stephen Mallinder for Throne Of Blood. Here the emphasis, as expected with Whiskey Pickle, is on disco with a slight leaning to the left. "Absolute" is a bubbling jam laden with illustrious threads of melody, cosmic in nature but still rooted thanks to a rock solid rhythm section. "Limoncello" is a more introspective affair that works with minor chords and a more intricate set of drums, but don't be fooled the groove is very much still intact. New York duo Whatever/Whatever bring a tougher dynamic to "Absolute," dialing in some beefy beats and amping up the synth touches for a surefire house heater.

  1. Like It Is (5:58)
  2. Nigerian Affair (6:57)
  3. Long Night Ahead (7:15)
  4. Pajama Stomp (6:36)
Review: For their latest journey into re-edit/original production fusion, Brooklyn's Razor 'N' Tape crew has turned to Munich duo COEO, who have previously impressed via fine outings on Toy Tonics and Let's Play House. The four-tracks here, which all blend samples from classic recordings with their own drums and musical flourishes, all sound like guaranteed dancefloor winners. Check, for example, the breezy Afro-beat-goes-disco cheeriness of "Nigerian Affair", the wonderfully rich keys and organic deep house bump of "Pajama Stomp", and the riotous, high-octane disco-house loop-funk of "Long Night Ahead". Best of all, though, is opener "Like It Is", a sweet, dewy-eyed, string-drenched soul revision that achieves the perfect balance between dancefloor grunt, and paying due reverence to the German duo's horn-heavy source material.

  1. Dynadisco
  2. Party Jam
  3. Party Jam (Whatever/Whatever remix)
Review: The next release on Brazil's ever-promising disco steamer Gop Tun comes from Renato Cohen. Cohen has been an infrequent mainstay of Brazilian dance music for a long time now, most recently appearing on Kling Klong, Tronic and 100% Pure. His releases may not come around every day, but he makes them count when they do. "Dynadisco" is a spaced out slow burner with a looped up groove and simmering pads building towards a powerful, funk-fuelled bass drop. "Party Jam" takes a lighter approach, keeping the samples sprightly and even sprinkling a little acid magic into the tune. It gives Whatever/Whatever plenty to be working on their remix, which spreads across the B side in a fit of electro-disco finery.

  2. Get It Off The Ground (3:09)
Review: American artist Joe Coleman's soulful boogie-down number "Get It Off The Ground" was released back in 1982 and is still popular amongst those that know. Austrian imprint Record Shack present a hot edit by New York City legend DJ Spinna on this edition, which retains the infectious energy of the original but gives the track some much needed dynamics for modern dancefloors. Although we give credit to the edit, the lo-slung funk of the original will always be king and rest assured that is indeed featured here on the flip.

Review: All hail brand new label MIC (Music Inspires Change), launching with five never-before-heard jams from cult 80s fusionist and groove buccaneer Mike Collins, the jazz funk pro magician who was responsible for a number of iconic hits in the 80s. Behind-the-scenes he was also flexing serious synth muscles, setting the foundation for the house explosion that happened by the end of the decade. From the b-boy finesse of "Phat Back Beats" to the jazzier wriggles and flare of "Halfway House" by way of the cosmic bossa of "Latino Beats", each track was way ahead of its time and continues to have resonance to this day.

  1. Moto

  4. Moto (Man Power remix)
Review: After appearing on the first Calypso Records release out of Mexico last year, Colossio returns to the fray with a whole EP of sleazy jams for the warm up crowd to get nasty to. "Moto" is a grinding crossover track that features dirty garage guitars to match the low-slung synth undulations and sizzling disco beat, while "Fe" throws the windows open for a ranging cut centred around all kinds of instrumentation played with a post-punk looseness. "Ansia" keeps things nervous and atmospheric without skimping on party energy, and then Man Power swoops in for a remix of "Moto" that keeps things spooky while injecting a swinging groove into the mix.

  1. Lucid Memory
  2. Pugs Life
  3. The Delete Of Society
  4. New Horizons
Review: Roy Comanchero is a bit of a mystery. According to the brief bio accompanying this debut EP for Gerd Janson's Running Back imprint, Comanchero "hates modern production tools like laptops" and travels round looking for beaches to inspire his records. There's certainly a vintage feel to the four tracks showcased here, which combine heavy electrofunk basslines and classic synthesizer lines with Scandolearic melodies and a hazy deep house sensibility. It's a formula that guarantees good fun, from the Terje-does-boogie grooves of "Pugs Life" and bubbling analogue deep house of "The Delete of Society", to the slowly unfurling Balearic bliss of "New Horizons".

Q&R (12")
Cat: COMBI 09. Rel: 26 Oct 11
  1. Q
  2. R
Review: It's round nine of Eric Dr Dunk Duncan's C.OM.B.I. edits and one must wonder what's gonna happen after X & Y? Putting aside such questions of disco existentialism, Q & R bang like you'd expect, digging up more curios from Japan and dusting them down with aplomb. "Snakes Wine" is a furiously uptempo afro disco number, dominated by the laser shots of over the top Moroder synths but driven by gliding bass lines and slick guitar riffs. A chance to wipe sweat from brow is offered on the flip with the less thunderous "Looking A Star", a twilight slow jam which bubbles with seductive intent - just wait for those vocals to come through!

  3. Ritorno (Rodion remix)
  4. Andata (Timothy Heretic Clerkin remix)
Review: Italian duo Concret are the latest signings to Wonder Stories, following up previous releases for Toy Tonics and others to make their debut appearance on vinyl. The crisply produced, modern originals sit somewhere in between disco-infused house music and bombastic electronica in the Moderat vein, while the remixes throw a few more stylistic twists into the mix. Rodion brings a bold, bleepy analogue vibe to his version of "Ritorno", while Timothy Heretic Clerkin gets a little acidic in his revision of "Andata", rounding out a strong EP of maximal dance music for the modern age.

  1. Let's Fall Back (A Very Special Reeno mix) (11:06)
  2. I'll Be Around (A Very Special Reeno mix) (6:31)
Review: Second time around for Kupcake Records' debut 12", which first dropped on white vinyl a couple of months back. For the uninitiated, it sees New York new-boogie stalwart James Reeno (who also happens to be the boss of Kupcake) deliver two deliciously epic reworks of cuts by Aussie electrofunk outfit Confection. A-side "Let's Fall Back" is borderline brilliant: a sumptuous, summer-friendly disco jam rich in undulating boogie bass, Chic style guitars, spacey synth flourishes and a breezy vocal that's as loved-up as they come. Reeno's classic electrofunk influences come to the fore on side B, where he delivers a similarly extended rework of Confection's deep nu-boogie cover of Detroit Spinners classic "I'll Be Around". Essential.

  1. Let's Fall Back (A Very Special Reeno mix) (11:06)
  2. I'll Be Around (A Very Special Reeno mix) (6:32)
Review: Kupcake is the new sub label of Spazzoid Records out of New York City, which focuses on boogie, soul and funk from external artists. Its debut release features Australian boogie-soul duo Confection, with two extended 12" mixes by label boss James Reeno. On the A side, we have the Sydney based duo deliver the classic Salsoul/West End inspired vibe of "Let's Fall Back" (A Very Special Reeno mix) which is incredibly sexy indeed. On the flip, we've got the bittersweet deep disco ditty "I'll Be Around" (A Very Special Reeno mix) calling to mind the romantic sounds of early noughties Naked Music - not a bad thing at all.

  1. Once I've Been There (extended Promo version) (5:50)
  2. Captain Connors (unreleased extended mix) (7:23)
Review: Norman Connors was a 'go to' producer in the 1970s and '80s for soul and jazz, while holding it down on an impressive array of solo albums. Connors is a drummer first and foremost, and across his rhythm-focussed recordings were the introduction of singers who went on to have their own individual careers such as Jean Carn, Phyllis Hyman and the exceptional Phillip Mitchel - who features on A side 'Once I've Been There'. Flipside track 'Captain Connors' comes as a 12" mix made in 1977 but never released before on vinyl! Previously, the title track was only ever on a promotional release, often changing hands at over 100 quid a time - demand is high on this special release on the original imprint, cop it while you can!

Review: Nicola Conte and Gianluca Petrella follow up last year's beautiful "African Spirits / New World Shuffle" with two more lavish instrumentals. "Sun Song" lives up to its name with wave after wave of heated musicianship from the belting harmonies to the light-touch keys. "Nigeria" taps deep into the source too as it drives us through the heart of Lagos with full horns and sweeping keys. Spiritual, sun-splashed and vital.

Review: Last spotted on wax together 16 years ago on New Standards, Italian kindred spirits and diggers Conte and Petrella collide once again. A culmination of many records savoured and ideas shared between the two friends, this 12" is long overdue and fizzes with fusion. "African Spirit" is focused on a rolling tribal MAW style house rhythm with Gianluca adding his signature trombone with staccato finesse while "New World Shuffle" is a much dreamier, smoky affair that sounds perfect any time between sunset and sunrise. Spiritual.

  4. El Molito - "Sunny Days In The Chocolate Factory" (5:08)
Review: Here's something of a rarity: a 12" outing from Canada's Common Edit, a label best-known for releasing sneaky 7" singles. Wisely, the label has decided to use the format to serve up more tracks - four, to be precise - with a swathe of scalpel wielding label talent at the controls. Cooper Saver and Patrick Holland kick things off via the Balearic boogie brilliance of synth-laden roller "How About", before Eddie C lights up something fat and fragrant, dips the tempo and goes all jazz-funk on Brazilian disco slow-jam "Don't Rush". Flip to the B-side for the majestic, Clavinet-laden peak-time disco rush of Dane's "Space Up Your Life" (chuckle) and the atmospheric Blaxploitation hustle of El Molito's "Sunny Days in the Chocolate Factory".

Review: Fresh from London, Fulham young blood Joe Corti starts a new London imprint, China White. The first entry to the catalog is a four track EP coming from himself: reprising the filtered disco house vibes that caught ears on his past releases on the A-side; and ditching the samples to flex a darker, deeper side on the B. The label will be a solid home for productions from Joe and like-minded fellow friends.

  1. Love Affair (8:35)
  2. Jigsaw (6:14)
Review: As the majestically matter-or-fact title suggests, this EP sees Cottam swap his dusty drum machines and classic synthesizers for a scalpel and reels of quarter inch tape. The results are as on-point as you'd expect, with the experienced producer delivering two tried and tested reworks. Perhaps the most arresting of the pair is flipside "Jigsaw", a wonderfully percussive rearrangement of a sparse but heavy tribal jam that sounds African in origin. It's little more than drums and a lone vocal, but it works so well. In contrast, A-side "Love Affair" sees him make merry with a deliciously glassy-eyed and celebratory mid-tempo disco jam full of glass-cut strings, punchy horns and seductive female backing vocals.

  3. You Gotta Make It Loose (6:24)
Review: San Francisco's Honey Soundsystem are doing a good job in unearthing long-lost Patrick Cowley productions. Having previously joined forces with Dark Entries to release the pioneering producer's soundtrack to gay porn flick School Daze - and soon, a compilation of his other work for pornographic movies - they've decided to go solo on this 12". Kickin' In features a trio of previously unreleased Cowley disco workouts, recorded between 1975 and 1978. The real killer is the title track, a typically epic, 15-minute excursion that fuses Cowley's throbbing, masculine synthesizer lines with vocals and instrumentation from disco band Loverde. Flip for two groovy, low slung disco workouts that are, rather surprisingly, free of Cowley's usual Hi-NRG arpeggios. Instead, there are live basslines, organic percussion and decidedly sleazy spoken word vocals from the great man himself. In a word: essential.

Review: One way ticket business: cult one-hit-wonders Crashers dropped these cool runnings in 1981 and it's since been known to pass hands for high figures. Famously celebrated and consequently edited by Dimitri From Paris, here we find it in all its original Capo Disco glory. Vibrant, sing-along and just on the right side of sleaze, it still runs as fast as it did almost 40 years later. The same can be said for original b-side "Skank". Pure rare groove boogie with more than your month's quota of slapbass, fuzzy guitar and falsettos, it's another first class trip. Bon voyage.

Review: Paul Craver's smooth strain of jazzed-out house music has been MIA since 2013, and we're glad to hear some of it back on our charts with such fervor. The man returns to Sundae Soul Recordings with two fine-ass cuts, the first of which is an edit of a certain track called "Back To You" (unnamed for legal reasons), and it's one of those seductive soul ballads that sounds just perfect on the dancefloor. On the flip, T Groove drops a mix of "Don't Let Love Walk Out In Us" and, once again, we have a lovely blend of disco-leaning soul on our hands - perfect for just about any situation involving lovers and the moonlight. Gorgeous.

This time round, he's in full-on re-edit mode, offering up a quartet of tried-and-tested reworks. Those searching for peak-time gold should check opener "Spirit Dance", where Croce teases out a celebratory moment of release by extended particularly percussive passages of a heavy disco gem. Elsewhere, "Proletariat Blues" is a slightly loopier but no less groovy rework of a string-laden disco gem, "Get Up & Boogie" plays around with a punchy and horn-heavy disco-funk anthem and "Made in China" is a pitched-down delight full of crunchy Clavinet lines, sharp horn stabs and mazy synth solos. Superior edits, all told.

Where the label has been often associated with deeper techno and electro, it sounds right at home exploring the Moog bass licks and snappy drum programming that pours like a fine wine out of every track. "Night Heat" is the perfect lead track, all steamy synth throb and funky guitar licks, while "Feel" turns up the pressure with a proto house burner that would have set the Paradise Garage alight. Also look out for a rare appearance from AD Bourke, who cruises on to the record to deliver a blissed out version of "Night Heat" for the smokiest of sundown situations.
