Review: Italians Do It Better seem to have initiated some sort of three yearly reissue cycle for Glass Candy's amazing second LP Beatbox, with this 2013 edition coming after the label initially reissued Jonny Jewel and Ida No's 2007 masterpiece in 2010. There's a reason it keeps getting reissued and that's because Beatbox is a classic in the IDIB canon along with Night Drive by Chromatics, the After Dark compilation and Farah's helium voiced Gay Boy 12". From the opening "Introduction" it's impossible not to fall under the thrall of Ms No once again and tracks such as "Etheric Device", their cover of Kraftwerk and the monumental "Rolling Down The Hill" are wonderful reminders of how important Mike Simonetti's label were in that 2006-9 period of excellence.

Review: Say yes! The definitive gossamer Italo floor fuel of Ida No and Johnny Jewel's Glass Candy outfit enjoys an expanded reissue here after over a decade out of print. Nothing but synthetic positivity as both the title track and "Drumm" stride with an almost marching feel before "Where Time Sits Still" plunges much deeper into moody new romantic cinematics. Elsewhere other highlights include the slinky poignancy that lingers from every spacious bass pluck on "City Lights" and the trembling ambience and pressurised atmosphere of the finale "Sanctuary". Yes please.

Review: Riding high on the buzz he has generated in the last twelve months, Max Graef delivers this album to Tartelet as a man very much in demand. His style, fuelled on the foundations of sampling funk and soul to a brilliantly modern end, has more space to breathe on this LP, but still the fundamentals remain. "Itzehoe" struts on a lazy jazzed-out sizzle of drums and beautiful Rhodes notes while "Tamboule Fudgefunk" punches its way through woozy synth work and a righteous beat and "Drums Of Death" struts on a perfect disco groove replete with live instrumentation, but there's a wealth of other tempos and styles all shot through with the homespun jazz charm that Graef has made his own of late.

Review: Claudio Casalini's Best Record label does a fine job of reissuing funk, disco and other curios from the mists of time, and so it goes with this wonderful slice of loose and live soul jazz. Grupo Almendra hailed from Venezuela, and they released their sole album Almendra in 1978 in a whirlwind of Latin American musicality and it had been consigned to relative obscurity. Whichever digger was lucky enough to discover this gem must have been very pleased indeed, for the quality of the music and the production is nothing short of remarkable, while the remastering has respectfully revived the sweet, soulful sound of Grupo Almendra.

  11. The Island Music Makers - "Calypso Medley"
Review: Having previously provided BBE with two killer compilations of obscure old Windy City sounds, Chicago DJ, crate digger and record dealer Mark Grusane returns to the London label with his first "headline" release: a killer collection of personal re-edits that have never before seen the light of day outside his DJ sets. As you might expect, all of the edited material is exceptionally obscure and on-point, with Grusane variously touching-up slamming disco, celebratory jazz-funk, slick boogie, sax-sporting disco-funk (see the brilliant "Do It" by Shabadoo), sleazy slow jams (Daniele Patuuchi's sublime "Sacrifice") and, more surprisingly, steel band funk (Macho's fine version of "Mucho Macho").

Review: Such has been the rise of Marquis Hawkes in recent times that this debut album must mark as one of the most anticipated house sets of 2016. Happily, Social Housing is a superb showcase not only for Hawkes' talents, but also his understanding of house music in its' many myriad forms. The album does include, of course, a sprinkling of jackin' workouts, but these are outnumbered by such thrilling chunks of loved-up positivity as the Tiger & Woods style loop funk of "Fantasy", the Theo Parrish-ish jazz fuzziness of "Summer Memory", and the cheeky, Todd Edwards style cut-up garage of "Something In Yr Head" [sic]. The album's most potent moment, though, is "I'm So Glad", a collaboration with Jocelyn Brown that already ranks among 2016's most potent tunes.

Review: Graft Dracula in Oberbayern, or Dracula Blows His Cool, is the one of the very best B-movie greats of the last thirty years, and we can say this without a shadow of a doubt! Not only is the premise of the cult comedy easily one of the most imaginative and quirky stories to have been made into a film, but Gerhard Heinz' soundtrack was a wake-up call from anyone into the sounds of disco and early boogie, back at the time. In fact, the movie has gained notoriety thanks to this very score, having diggers salivating manically for an original copy. However, it's not all disco sensibility; Heinz is a man who can construct even the most obscure of acoustic roles, but his specialty certainly rests in synthesizers and dance music. Absolute tip!

Review: Queen Constance: Not just the sound of New York but also the sound of rejoicing as a new fully licenced series liberates once acutely rare soul and disco albums from the P&P affiliate label and makes them available legitimately (read: no poorly press bootlegs) at a fraction of the triple figure price some of its cult albums pass hands for. With strong traces of jazz and spirituality ("Love Champ"), delicate ballads ("Destiny") and loose limbed funk ("From Us To You"), there's a reason this one off album from High Fidelity was such a coveted record. This is a moment.

Review: The long-awaited second album from Brooklyn indie-dance darlings Holy Ghost!, Dynamics shows the band at their most nagging, hooky and vibrant. As hinted by the summer's most surprising sing-along success "Dumb Disco Ideas", each track is perfectly crafted pop that teeters somewhere between Squeeze and Hot Chip. Highlights include the bold 80s synth hymn "It Must Be The Weather", the weeping guitars and yearning vocals of the Simple Minds-esque "Don't Look Down" and the undiluted synth pop Pet Shop Boys majesty of the finale "Cheap Shots". Perfectly polished and instantly infectious, Holy Ghost! have written an exciting new chapter and it's well worth a read.

Review: Hot Chip continue to occupy a unique space in British music. Yet despite their standing as a bunch of polymaths just as at home with pure pop as experimental diversions, what continues to truly separate them from all or any contemporaries is a rich melancholy to their sound, and it's this which looms pleasantly large on 'Why Make Sense'. The songwriting of Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard has never sounded sharper, not their beat-driven yet tastefully spare sound more addictive. Now as ever, no-one can reconcile human emotion and machine-like rhythm in quite the same fashion as this maverick outfit.

Review: A couple of years back, Running Back boss Gerd Janson wrote an in-depth article for Red Bull Music Academy about Tony Humphries' legendary "Mastermixes" - all-action mixes originally created for NYC radio stations in the '80s and '90s. With this in mind, it's perhaps unsurprising that he commissioned the legendary DJ to give the Running Back catalogue the same treatment. Predictably, Humphries has come up with the goods, delivering a loved-up, melodious and classic sounding trip through mostly synth-heavy, classic-sounding label highlights. That it sounds like the kind of set you'd actually hear from Humphries is testament not only to the quality of his track selection and mixing, but also the suitability of the Running Back catalogue.

Review: You'd expect a compilation curated by open-minded DJ/producer Hunee to be eclectic in nature, and Hunchin' All Night is just that and more. Marketed simply as "a collection of his favourite dancefloor cuts from the '70s until modern time", the CD is packed with obscure and inspired jams in a variety of styles. Compare, for example, the gentle but tribal rhythms and new age synthesizers of Carlos Maria and Nuno Canavarro's "Blue Terra" with the glistening, mid-80s Balearic jazz-funk brilliance of Stanislas Tohon's "Owhaaou" (as re-edited by Dutch digger Raphael Top-Secret), or even the Clavinet-heavy Highlife brilliance of Pat Thomas's "Yesu San Bra Disco Hi Life". And that's before we get to the acid-flecked techno madness of Villa Abo and Hunee's wonderfully dreamy and dubbed-out pulse of Mappa Mundi's "Trance Fusion".

Review: The same people behind Emotional Rescue launch as fine sister imprint in the shape of Emotional Rescue, with a near perfect insight into how the label will operate thanks to Nzambi - a quite stunning full length album from Jason Letkiewicz under his Alan Hurst moniker. If you consider yourself an avid purchaser of vinyl, you will no doubt have added some Letkiewicz heat to your collection in recent times, with excellent releases as Steve Summers and Innergaze in recent times. The Alan Hurst project sees the Brooklyn producer in more laid back form, indulging his passion for library sounds and experimental electronics with just as much aplomb. Allegedly commissioned to soundtrack a film on modern Haitian Voodoo, Nzambi is a woozily intoxicating thirteen track set that opens your senses to a true darkness in this producer's palette of sounds that's not really been explored before.

Review: Earlier this year, Acid Jazz signed a deal with soul legend Leroy Hutson to license his vast catalogue of work. Having already reissued a number of key releases, the long-running London label has now put together this retrospective of his solo work. It contains material from albums and singles recorded between 1972 and '84, plus a couple of cuts that were previously unissued before they appeared on wax earlier this year (most notably the brilliant "Positive Forces"). Naturally, there are plenty of must-haves present, including classics such as "Cool Out", "Lover's Holiday", "So In Love With You" and "Closer To The Source", making it a near perfect introduction to Hutson's sensual musical world.

Review: Like many obscure Italo-disco acts, The Stupid Set largely went uncelebrated during their early '80s career. Here, Opilec boss I-Robots gives them a new lease of life via an album of his own edits of their previously unreleased Psychodisco set. It was originally recorded at the tail end of 1981 using an entirely analogue set-up, and subsequently performed live a number of times. This, though, is the first time it's seen an official release. I-Robots' edits are, naturally, fairly sympathetic to the original material, merely extended and snipping sections whilst leaving the band's analogue oddness in tact. Musically, it's impressive, too, sitting somewhere between curious new wave, early experimental electronica, the Horror soundtrack work of John Carpenter, and the raging throb of floor-friendly Italo-disco.

Review: During the boogie years of the early 1980s, Imagination was that rarest of things: a British act who enjoyed considerable success on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. Charismatic, eccentric front man Leee John (prone to appearing on Top of The Pops and Soul Train in what looked like a giant nappy) was clearly the star attraction, though it was always the band's tactile, wide-eyed synth sound that really shone. This "best of" runs down the highlights of their career, mixing well-known, stone-cold classics such as "Just an Illusion", "Changes", "Flashback" and "Music & Lights" with lesser-known later works such as "Found My Love" (a definiantly sugary slow jam) and the Prince style flash-funk of "Krash (All Night Long)".

Review: Over the last decade, In Flagranti have built up quite a collection of "rejected" remixes - those which were commissioned and completed but, for one reason or other, never saw the light of day. In typical DIY fashion, they've decided to release them anyway, putting out this wholeheartedly entertaining collection of previously unheard dancefloor gems. As you might expect, there's a strong disco vibe - check the rubbery slap bass of "In The Middle of It" - and tracks that touch on vibrant, synth-heavy electrofunk, but also a range of tracks which gleefully fuse styles, from skanking nu-disco reggae, wonky disco-acid and low-slung disco-punk (a curious version of M's "Pop Music"), to sweaty, percussive drum workouts ("Play My Game") and fearsome electronic oddness ("The Tube").

Review: Odion Iruoje aka Sound President was one of Nigeria's top producers in the 1970s and early '80s, but his solo recording career was restricted to just the one release, Down To Earth. Originally released on Iruoje's own label, Odion Ltd, in 1983, it was only ever distributed in small quantities and Soundway Records have given this much needed re-issue. Iruoje is known for having signed the legendary Fela Kuti to major label EMI and acting as his producer throughout the early '70s. Starting out with the proto funk rap cut "Identify With Your Root (Which One You De?)", there's some killer West African boogie-funk-soulfulness on "Ikebe" and some feel good disco vibes; Lagos style on "Love Care".
