We Are Righteous People (12") (1 per customer)
Cat: RHSTOREJAMS 010. Rel: 14 Jun 17
  1. Bouncing Atoms (4:33)
  2. We Are Righteous People (4:27)
Review: Last year, Sadar Bahar made a visit to the Utrecht studio of veteran electro producer and analogue synthesizer collector Ben Spaander (AKA Cosmic Force). Having got on incredibly well, they decided to record tracks together under the Ben & Sadar's alias. This debut 12" is something of a treat: a two-track, sample-free romp through heavyweight disco-funk fusion. They begin with killer boogie jam "We Are Righteous People", where jammed-out guitar riffs, wavy saxophone lines and rubbery slap bass lines wrap themselves around an all-action drum machine groove. Flip for the guitar-wielding madness of "Bouncing Atoms", whose Cream style riffs and bluesy solos ride a cowbell-heavy disco groove.

  1. Time For A Change (3:25)
  2. Time For A Change (Hot mix) (3:24)
Review: In the sales notes accompanying this latest slice of 7" gold from Athens of the North, boss man Euan Fryer admits that he spent a good "four or five years" trying to locate an original copy of "Time For Change" before finally tracking down original singer Benita. She was more than happy for him to reissue the record, which is one of the most inspired and well-made disco-soul records you're ever likely to hear (how it remained a lost classic, we'll never know). Benita's lyrics and vocals are superb, the horns are punchy, and the B-side "Hot Mix" contains one of the best slap-bass solos you'll ever hear. In a word: essential.

Take A Little Time (7" + insert) (1 per customer)
Cat: SDE 32. Rel: 03 Apr 18
  1. Take A Little Time (4:40)
  2. My Next Step (3:19)
Review: Bill F Whitten is undoubtedly best known as the fashion designer behind some of the most arresting outfits worn by Michael Jackson, the Jacksons and Stevie Wonder. During the mid-to-late '70s, he was also briefly the leading member of an eight-piece Atlantic disco outfit called Between The Two. While the band performed live around the U.S in 1977, they never released any music, despite making studio recordings of some of their songs. Here, two of those "lost songs" make it to vinyl to the first time. We're particularly enjoying the driving, celebratory, sing-along disco of A-side "Take a Little Time", though the jazzier, slower and more musically expansive love song "My Next Step" is also impressive.

  1. Cosmos (6:53)
  2. Ether (8:07)
  3. D Quelle (11:25)
Review: Vintage hardware enthusiast Bezier doesn't release much, but what he does deliver is invariably excellent. This outing on Honey Soundsystem follows similarly inclined outings on Dark Entries and HNTTRX, all of which impressed with their far-sighted feel and sparkling synthesizer motifs. Cosmologist heads straight for the jugular, with "Cosmos" delivering a delicious blend of Italo-disco style arpeggios, Euro-disco melody lines, and occasional blasts of eight-bit electronics. Flip for the skittish, proto-house influenced drums, moody horror chords and proto-techno electronics of "Ether", and the deep, melodious and attractive instrumental synth-pop of EP closer "D Quelle".

Mina (12")
Cat: HNY 007. Rel: 28 Aug 15
  1. Mina (Everyone) (8:12)
  2. Serengeti Drive (4:53)
  3. Mysteries Of The Deep (5:02)
Review: You wait ages for a Bezier record, and two come along at once. Following hot on the heels from his excellent Telemores mini-album for Dark Entries, synthesizer enthusiast Bezier drops a surprise 12" for the affiliated Honey Soundsystem. As usual, the French producer has his sights set on mining the past for inspiration. "Mina (Everywhere)" begins in typical fashion - all spacey synthesizers and twinkling melodies - before morphing into a relentless chunk of dirty, Italo-and-EBM inspired house. The pleasingly sunny "Serengeti Drive" is more of a stripped-back Italo-disco bubbler (admittedly with dream-wave flourishes), while "Mysteries of the Deep" offers an intergalactic romp through cold-wave pastures with only cheap old synths and drum machines for company.

  5. Necropolis (4:22)
  6. Fukushima (4:49)
Review: Analogue synthesizer enthusiast Bezier first surfaced on Dark Entries in 2012, delivering the hard-wired retro-futurist fantasy Ensconced. Two years on, he's finally ready to release the follow-up, the similarly sharp and sci-fi themed Telemores. As with his previous output, the influences are obvious - think Radiophonic Workshop, electro, minimal, new wave and Italo-disco - but he smartly steers clear of pastiche and empty revivalism. Instead, we're treated to a range of dancefloor-friendly instrumental cuts, cyborg jams, and intoxicating robot rinse-outs. Closer "Fukushima", in which he doffs a cap to the synthesized horror-disco of John Carpenter, is particularly potent.

Review: The Iceland-born, Norway-based producer, B. G. Baarregaard, channels the great tradition of Scandinavian electronic disco on this delectable four-tracker, maintaining a crisp and funky edge to his productions while making sure every inch of the wax is dripping with old-skool warmth. "Tokyo 1988" stands out with its perfect lashings of boogie rubbed into the joints, while "Kick The Burger" slows things right down for a cool and deadly cruise through electro funk of the highest order.

Bombay Disco 2 Sampler (limited 12")
Cat: COS 60212. Rel: 07 Nov 14
  1. Asha Bhosle - "Jab Chaye" (Brother Cleve re-edit)
  2. Bappi Lahiri - "Dance Music" (Brother Cleve Studio 29 remix)
Review: Ahead of the second Bombay Disco compendium, Cultures Of Soul tease us with two show-stopping Brother Cleve edits. As with the inaugural album, this collection celebrates the subcontinent's more obscure cinematic soundtracks and what's known in India as the item number, the cabaret style dances performed in Asian cinemas. "Jab Chaye" remains in its original incarnation with mild touches on rhythm and arrangement while "Dance Music" has been given a complete flip-around with chunky jacking beats that complement the frenetic tabla drums consummately. Album teasers don't get much more exciting than this.

Tarzan Loves The Summer Nights (12" + lyric insert)
Cat: DE 057. Rel: 13 Jan 14
  1. Tarzan Loves The Summer Nights
  2. Tarzan
Review: Stupendously rare Italo gem from the criminally under-prolific Trieste-based Big Ben Tribe, this quirky poplet first came our way in 1984 on Gong. Last spotted changing hands for hundreds on auction sites, Dark Entries have done the disco world a favour and licensed a reissue. Untouched and naked in all its 80s glory, the synth patterns, abstract lyrics and arrangement were way ahead of their time and clearly influenced many electronic pop and Balearic bands who followed. Vocals just a bit too much for you? No worries, just flip for the instrumental. Tarzan loves summer nights, and we love Dark Entries for unearthing this utter classic.

  3. Twilight (Jose Manuel Dub) (6:52)
  4. Twilight (Jose Manuel Voyage Voyage) (6:27)
Review: New York's Quinn Luke aka Bing Ji Ling is always up to some crazy shit. Whether it's far-out strains of exotica, electronic folk, or even some straight-up hill-billie funk, the nomadic artist is always one to look out for. He's up on Spain's excellent Lovemonk label, perennial leaders in leftfield disco and balearica, with the raunchy, funk-tastic guitar riffs of "Twilight", a tune that is so cool and laid-back it could be enjoyed by pretty much all walks of life. There's three version, though, all by Jose Manuel; the main remix drops in a house beat and something of a Latino sound, the dub goes deeper into the bass elements of the mix, and the Voyage Voyage mix takes the listener on a more daring journey, backed by a progressive edge. We love it.

  4. Stay With Me (5:32)
Review: Although little known in the UK, Sicilian singer Mario Biondi has sold huge amounts of records in his native Italy. It's not surprising, really, given the quality of his Barry White-esque deep and soulful vocal style. Here he pops up on Schema, offering up the seductive, slow dance-friendly silkiness of "Never Stop Dreaming" and the warm and groovy Philly Soul revivalism "Stay With Me". That track is given the once over by fellow Italian LTJ Xperience. Interestingly, his full vocal remix is faster, warmer and looser than his normal metronomic productions, while retaining his usual DJ-friendly grooves. His soulful house style instrumental Dub is pretty darn tasty, too.

  1. Cave Clan (5:27)
  2. Don't Run We Are Your Friends (4:14)
Review: Coming through utterly correct, as per usual, Francis Inferno Orchestra aka Bjorn This Way spearheads the second release of the Superconscious Records imprint. This is some straight up edit goodness, and the very best of its kind. Think of it in terms of being the Rolls Royce of current nu-disco. But the thing is, this gear goes way beyond disco and lands into some pretty surprising, gloriously obscure territories. "Cave Clan" for instance, is more of an electro-meets-EDM banger than anything disco related, and if we really have to go into specifics on this tight little banger, it reminds us of the Golden Teacher output from the Optimo Camp - a stone-cold killer. The B-side ain't too shabby either, where a looming, heavy bassline catapults us into a dark and mysterious groove with a devilish percussion. An absolute tip - warmly recommended!

Review: For their first release of 2018, Toy Tonics stalwarts Black Loops is joined in the studio by fellow Italian producer Innocent Soul, head honcho of the recently launched Strictly Street Sounds imprint. The EP's four tracks offer a perfect blend of the former's groovy, chunky deep house sound and the sample-heavy, Chicago-inspired disco-house jams favoured by the latter. Highlights include "Black Soul", a funk-fuelled peak-time jam rich in Hamilton Bohannon style guitar loops and elastic bass guitar samples, the James Brown break-fired weightiness of "Bang the Dancefloor" and the squidgy deep house funk of "The Flame", which boasts a particularly rush-inducing breakdown.

  1. Date With The Rain (Soft Rocks edit) (11:38)

Review: The fourth release on Black Rox finds the Africa-loving label looking to a fine pair of suitors to do the business on a fine pair of edits. Soft Rocks is up first, channelling all the sun of the source material into a track called "Date With The Rain". It's a sweet natured jam layered with gorgeous vocals, perfect Afro guitar licks and a bubbling organ line. Roots Unit takes over on the B side with the more tricky-to--pin-down affair that puts snaking percussion at the front of the mix and loops up some mantras and chants for a truly head-spinning end result.

Review: Blancmange were a British synth-pop outfit which surfaced out of the late 1970's and thanks to the power of Record Store Day, the infamous Cherry Red imprint has put out their "I Want More" single from their last Semi Detached LP accompanied by a fine remix, indeed! The original is a robotic, interstellar disco tune with one hell of a vocal loop: a ringing, pulsating chant which'll get you singing in no time. London's bass wizard Applebottom is called up for the remix duties and his own version is a militant tech-house rework with a bubbling bassline and some pretty killer percussion work!

Cat: PF 100. Rel: 11 Dec 17
  1. Day-O (Past Fire edit) (8:36)
  2. Day-O (Past Fire dub) (8:41)
Review: This is one of those records that shouldn't work, but is actually irrepressibly good. It features two fantastic tweaks of a little known - and incredibly silly - 1989 cover of "Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)" by short-lived Dutch combo Bless This Mess. The original is pretty bonkers - think tropical synth-pop meets humid Balearica meets trippy acid house - so A-side editor A Good Christian has done a fine job of turning it into guaranteed dancefloor gold. If anything, Young Marco's flipside Dub version, a pulsating 6am wig-out that utilizes just one vocal phrase ("daylight come and we want to go home", of course) is, if anything, even better. A quirky delight, all told.

Review: The Skylax bossman most commonly known as Hardrock Striker ignites his Bleu Blanc House project with two quintessential happy house jams. All bubbles and strings, "Stomp 5" fuses disco with Chi-town to great filtered effect. Coming on strong like 1999 Roule record, there's a deep infectiousness in its loopy wizardry. "Don't Mess With La Foudre" hits even sweet g-spots with its big piano riff and mid 90s playfulness. Feel good vibes like this never die.

  2. I Wanna Fly Away (instrumental) (5:46)
Review: San Francisco's Dark Entries has a rising reputation for the quality of their Italo-disco reissues. Certainly, many of the tracks they select for re-release are undeniably obscure and in-demand. Blue Russell's "I Wanna Fly Away", originally released in 1984 on leading Italo-disco imprint Discomagic Records, definitely falls into this category (an original copy will set you back well over L100, should you find one). It's a typically fruity concoction, with bold synthesizer lines and Europop-influenced melodies riding a chugging groove. Just like the hard-to-find original pressing, Dark Entries' reissue boasts both the delightfully camp vocal version, and a chunkier instrumental.
