  3. Bamboo Room
  4. Bamboo Room (Ormus mix)
Review: Bamboo Room lands on (Emotional) Especial in a fit of 80s grooves as you would expect to find on the label, but this is in fact the handiwork of debutant duo Duncan Thornley and Laurence Horstman. As Weird Weather they're exploring the fertile hinterland between proto-house, dub abstractions and worldly sounds - they may not be the first to do so, but they sound like complete naturals in this curious bubble. "Sequence 5" is a driving beatdown peppered with space-shaping delays and reverbs, while "Trash Dolphin" takes a cooler approach with some delicate percussive tones and chimes. "Bamboo Room" is a stark, stern beat track fit for a mid 80s cop thriller soundtrack, and the "Ormus Mix" that follows shrugs off most of the drums and heads into satin-lined ambient territory.

Lost Funk & Disco Gems Volume Five: Canadian Disco Boogie Edition: Official Edits EP (limited heavyweight vinyl 12" in Juno exclusive branded sleeve + sticker)

  1. Come To Me (Nik Weston official extended re-edit) (5:39)
  2. Come To Me (remastered) (4:39)
  3. LA Walk (Nik Weston extended re-edit) (6:10)
Review: It would be fair to say that Estiban Lindsay's one and only album, 1980's L.A Walk, is something of a sought-after rarity. Considered by many disco/boogie diggers to be a must-have, original copies of the Canadian classic currently change hands for three-figure sums online. Ever the dusty-fingered digger, Nik Weston has managed to license two tracks from the album after hearing global trotting DJ Hunee championing the main track in his sets in 2015 , and provides his own extended dancefloor re-edits. Both are subtly done, with Weston teasing out Lindsay's grooves and making more of his deliciously soulful versions, all without adding needless house drums or contemporary production tricks. The EP also contains the original version of the warm, disco-boogie gem "Come To Me". As played by Craig Charles(BBC 6 Music),Hunee,Eddie C,Tom Noble,Admin , Mike Shaw, Volcov,Frank Booker,Red Greg, Ashley Beedle,Joey Negro.Dom Servini,Miles Eastwick,Faze Action and many more...

  1. Psycho For Your Love
  2. Work Those Joints
Review: Amidst recent praise from a variety of individuals including Ben UFO, Legowelt and the Juno review team, the Peoples Potential Unlimited label keep up the brilliant work with yet another killer disco boogie oddity from the early 80s. This Westwood / Cash twelve is the first of two twelve's from the Washington imprint to switch the focus to the career of Detroit producer Danaan Potts who can count on studying alongside a young Juan Atkins as well as spending close to 100 hours a week studio time alongside George Clinton as influences. Here he adopts the anonymous Westwood tag to add some bizarre P Funk to the delightful Orlando Cash jams "Psycho For Your Love" and "Work Those Joints". Additional PPU tweaks of both make this one of the labels best twelve's to date!

Review: Less of a whisper and much more of a future bellow; these 1979 disco boogie gems still shine with such an effortless synth class they sound as if they could strut out of a studio almost 40 years later. "Keep On Lovin' Me" is all about that slinky, molten bassline while "Turn Me Out" fixes our focus more on the Californian band's epic harmonies. Another premium excavation from Be With, we'll keep on lovin' this for a long long time to come.

  1. Rocket Ride (extended version)
  2. Rocket Ride (The Emperor Machine version)
Review: Dean Meredith’s White Light Circus returns to the 12" format with the celestial funk of "Rocket Ride" (extended version), a synth and drum work out that pays its dues to not only the robo-disco of Giorgio Moroder, but also to the Teutonic modulations of Kraftwerk and their oscillating computer soul. For the B-side, Meredith hands over the controls to Andy Meecham, who re-configures the rocket’s motherboard, presenting us with an Emperor Machine Version that spins us sideways into a meteor shower of insistent rhythms, sputnik melodies and sound effect squiggles. This is the follow up to 2005’s acclaimed "Marching Orders" which had a legion of DJ supporters including The Glimmers, Headman, Trevor Jackson, Soulwax, Prins Thomas, Rub N Tug, Pedro Ed Banger, Idjut Boys, Optimo, Stevie Kotey & Mr Scruff, etc.

Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** The wonderfully monikered Golden Flamingo out of New York City was one of many labels operating alongside the now legendary P&P Records imprint in the late 70's to early 80's. A Peter Brown and Patrick Adams production, "God Save & Protect All The Children" is an oft neglected gem in the wider P&P related catalogue. Williams is quite enigmatic and not much is known of her - other than her contributions on backing vocals to some classic records including Inner Life's 'Inner Life II' and The Salsoul Orchestra's Christmas LP. A lo-slung yet life-affirming version exists on the first side, while a more groovy and upbeat version exists on the flip of this legitimate repress.

  4. The Reynolds - "Don’t You Worry Baby The Best Is Yet To Come" (Greg Wilson & Peza mix) (8:46)
Review: As the title suggests, Super Weird Select Volume 1 gathers together some of the most sought-after cuts on Greg Wilson's growing Super Weird Substance label. First up is Luxxury's deliciously languid, poolside nu-disco take on Wilson's own "Summer Came My Way", featuring the attractive and cheery vocals of regular collaborators The Reynolds. Wilson and Peza's rework of "The Ghosts of Watling Street" by Oddfellow's Casino is a gently acid-flecked nu-disco shuffler, while the Henry Extended Mix of The Superb Weird Society's "Gone With The Vibe" is a p-funk flavoured electrofunk workout. Arguably best of all, though, is the classic disco soulfulness of Wilson and Peza's closing remix of The Reynolds' Bessie Banks cover, "Don't You Worry Baby The Best Is Yet To Come".

Review: Ali Renault's Vivod label continues to bring the goods, as recent missives from Skatebard and Monkeyshop (their first release of any sort for 11 years) emphatically prove. The imprint's latest release comes from newcomer Paul Withey, who follows up a fine contribution to a recent split E.O on Ruby Hills & Diamond Mountain, with a debut solo E.P of his own. The five tracks featured are nicely varied stylistically, but all boast the distinctive shimmer of analogue synthesizers and dusty drum machines. Highlights include the surging Italo-disco revivalism of "Pallas", cheerily positive synth-pop flex of "Yes Master", and the curious, Radiophonic Workshop style weirdness of "Beneath the Surface".

  2. Please Touch Me
  3. Sleep
Review: Billy Woost may not have released much music back in his heyday around 1977, but the one album he did put together was enough to secure a place in the crosshairs of the consummate Italian groove archivists, Best Italy. Picking up the finest jams from Woost's back catalogue, we're presented with a three tracker dripping with classic disco charm. "Body, Body Love" comes in a previously unreleased disco form that cruises at an easy pace but packs plenty of punch, while "Please Touch Me" edges the intensity up with a steamy set of strings, brass and vocals. "Sleep" meanwhile taps into a Blockheads kind of funk, bright and bouncy and just a little left of centre, which of course makes it all the more special.

  1. Vibrations (Disco version)
  2. Baobab (Disco version)
Review: Having reissued Body, Body Love last year, Best Records come back for more of Billy Woost's late 70s grooves, all lifted from his sole self-titled album and presented here in their true 'Disco Version' format. This time around it's "Vibrations" that takes centre stage, and it sounds resplendent in its widescreen vision of disco funk production at its highest possible standard. On the flip "Baobab" sounds even more potent with its killer bassline groove, dream-pop vocal trills and all round feel-good mood. Now if Best can just do the same job with the rest of the album we'll be laughing.

  1. Keep It Up (4:10)
  2. The Silence That You Keep (3:28)
Review:

Milton Wright's perfect deep Soul classic "Keep It Up" has always been a top shelf record, everything about it is almost flawless! Whether it's Milton's silky vocal delivery, the incessant guitar driven back beat or the total space Funk vibe of his omnipresent ARP-2600 synthesizer this record has it all. Originally released on TK Disco's more Soul and Funk orientated Alston label which was home to many legendary artists and records, this 1975 sunshine classic never fails to make people move. A classic rare groove indeed. "The Silence That You Keep" takes up side-B, a jazzy, flute driven love song that again features Milton's perfect voice and some fantastic arrangement. A real gem of a record, with the original 45 changing hands for over L100 a time in used condition.

This is the first time "Keep It Up" has been re-issued in it's original 45 rpm format with the original Alston label artwork. It's been re-mastered, re-pressed and made available again with the permission of TK Disco / Alston Records, Miami Florida, USA.

  3. Smurfin & Rappin
Review: Sounds Of The City has turned its attention to a new sublabel called Sounds Of The Streets, which supposedly focuses on the classic sounds of the 70s and 80s with one foot still tapping on the contemporary dancefloor. Wulysse is up first with Hotspot, and from the sounds of "Still Runnin" this artist has got the stylistic approach down to a fine art. Where that track is all bubbly and feel-good, there's a hint of mystery in the sweeping chords of "Hotspot", but either way the boogie funks hard on both tracks. "Smurfin & Rappin", by way of contrast, allows some acid influence into the mix with absolutely crucial results.

Review: Cologne's AVA Records present Tito Wun with his first solo record on the label. Featuring six heavy hits, it is a real label special. This will be Wun's fourth appearance on the label, not forgetting his full length with label staple Damiano Von Eckert entitled Mr. Pink, What Have You Been Smokin'? in 2013. Starting off with the low slung groove of "1023 Sunset Blvd", things make a tropical turn on "Iguacu Hash" which will take you deep into the exotic. On the flip, there's a fine edit of a good old soul classic on "NeEdit" and finally "5am" gets back into some dusty/slo-mo house action which has earned him releases on the likes of Money $ex and Tartelet.

  2. Diamond Real (Tee Scott instrumental mix) (7:07)
Review: Probably most known as the hook sampled in Zhane's breakthrough 1993 R&B smash hit "Hey Mr. DJ", it's only in recent years that it has been recognised as being from Michael Wycoff's 1982 sleeper hit "Looking Up To You". Taken from his second album Love Conquers All, Wycoff's short lived solo career sadly hit a dead end shortly after and he apparently went through tough times. That is until getting back on his feet via a new found faith and these days he is a Minister of Music at several Los Angeles area churches. "Looking Up To You" is a timeless soul classic featuring his signature vocal style, a lush string section, an even tighter brass section and powerhouse backing vocal team: you just don't get music like this anymore! B side cut "Diamond Real" (Tee Scott instrumental mix) is a more upbeat boogie number, with P-funk style elements plus neon-lit synths and disco guitar licks - wouldn't have been out of place on the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack actually!
