  1. If You Dance Tonight (4:46)
  2. Say Yea (3:49)
Review: Last spotted on AOTN in November 2015, DJ Fryer addresses the final two nuggets in Billy T'Spoon Bruner's short-but-perfectly formed with the final collection of tracks from Billy's own Oil Capital imprint. "If You Dance Tonight" is unashamed boogie fusion with fun lyrics and a slap bass line so rude it will make you blush. "Say Yea" is a classic 80s ballad delivered with Lionel levels of smoothness. A proper end-of-night, grab-your-coat gem. Limited to 500 copies, no represses.

Review: Ted Taylor's stone cold T.K Disco bomb gets a long, long awaited reissue. Still so vital and feel-good it stretches across two sides, Ted's iconic falsetto and the honeyed backing harmonies remains as skin-ripplingly powerful as they did in 1977. A cult classic, there's something here for everybody; the cool, the hip and indeed the square.

Below (12")
Cat: MR 1008. Rel: 25 Sep 17
  1. Below (9:02)
  2. Below (The Backwoods remix) (7:50)
Review: It's been some five years since we last heard from TBD, the alias used by old pals Lee Douglas and Justin Van Der Volgen for their occasional trips into sleazy, techno-influenced, basement-bothering, jack-track territory. Even by their standards, "Below" is deliciously filthy - a throbbing, pulsating fusion of rave-inspired electronics, dark build-ups, freakish acid lines and thunderous low-end bounce. Old pal DJ Kent (AKA producer Kento Sasaki) dons the occasional Backwoods pseudonym on the flipside remix, delivering a similarly dark but more electro-influenced interpretation that draws more heavily on the original's alien funk electronics.

Moscoman Reworks (limited 12")
Cat: DH 006. Rel: 20 Jul 16
  1. A Voice Across The Nile (Moscoman rework) (8:34)
  2. Oasis (Moscoman rework) (6:51)
  3. The Dynamic Energy (Moscoman rework) (6:25)
Review: Since 2014, Moscoman has worked hard to reach the reputation he's at now, and that comes in part to the music he's released on ESP Institute and Cosmo Vitelli's I'm A Cliche. But not simply relying on others to put out his music, Moscoman launched Disco Halal last year which has already notched up a whopping 10 releases, including a reissue of Tony Carey's 1984 album as TCP, which he indulgently remixes three times on this release. Appropriately, Moscoman tackles the album's title-track, shining a spotlight on the production's chorus of vocals, while the "Oasis" remix plays with Italo melodies, subtle middle eastern themes in a producton almost made for a Beverly Hills Cop scene. "A Voice Across The Nile" opens the 12" with a slinky drum track however Moscoman does let a cascading synth open up for some undeniable '80s vibes.

Inside Out EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: HOMAGE 001. Rel: 24 Jul 17
  1. Feel It (7:22)
  2. Inside Out (9:12)
  3. Clarity (5:30)
  4. Sugar (7:46)
Review: New York meets Brighton as both label and artist step out on wax for the first time. This is a new, exciting realm for Homage, but they surely know they're onto a winner with the feel good disco edit tones of Tech Support. There are classics embedded into these fine jams, with "Feel It" coming on particularly summery in its laid back disco funk stylings. "Inside Out" is slightly more looped up, but no less uplifting, while "Clarity" heads into a more woozy, filtered groove that feels inspired by the likes of Theo Parrish's Ugly Edits. By way of contrast "Sugar" is a much more electronic affair that kicks with purpose while simultaneously reaching for the stars.

Cat: AUS 127. Rel: 16 May 18
  1. Come A Little Closer (6:03)
  2. Wazoo (6:16)
  3. Prototypical (5:27)
Review: Millionhands head honcho Tom Mangan is back as Tee Mango on Aus Music - this would be his third appearance on the label in less than a year - which speaks volumes really. EP#2 features the lo-slung sexiness of "Make It Last Forever" featuring that awesome Inner Life sample throughout. On the flip, we have the funky deep-disco bounce of "Wazoo" that's perfect mood lighting for the early evening, while something a bit more energetic and harder hitting exists in the form of "Prototypical". A soulful and emotive house journey featuring gritty rhythms, a tough bouncy bassline and trippy stabs that's perfect to take crowd into the later hours - we absolutely loved this one!

  2. Barrier (Wolf Muller remix) (5:58)
  3. Rays (Harvey Sutherland remix) (6:41)
  4. Nuvolari (Tempelhof remix) (5:58)
Review: Earlier this year saw Hell Yeah Recordings unleash the freaky sound world that was Fabrizio Mammarella's debut long player under his long running Telespazio alias. If you haven't checked it yet, we suggest you remedy that as Mammarella delivered a most idiosyncratic album of cosmic disco funk. The eight tracks were ripe for reinvention so kudos to Hell Yeah for pulling together a quartet of like-minded souls to remix some of the Telespazio cuts. Freerange artist Kito Jempere turns in a wonderfully broken Jazz State Of Mind remix of "Glide Shot" with some sublime synth touches, whilst Wolf Muller goes typically off piste with a stuttering Dusseldorf beatdown take on "Barrier". Australian producer Harvey Sutherland turns in a far sighted deep house rendition of "Rays" whilst Hell Yeah act Tempelhof go all ambient Balearic on "Nuvolari".

Review: The subject of legendary edits by DJ Harvey and Joey Negro (and, sadly, a few unofficial reissues on poor quality vinyl) Tenderness's signature feel good thrust is felt on an official reissue right here. "Gotta Keep On Trying" is a powerful piece of disco with gutsy vocals, a super-tight guitar groove and backing vocals that have never aged since its 78 release. "Telly Love" closes on a rampant gospel drive with such a triumphant finale you'll need to play it again to make sure you're not dreaming. Tenderly timeless.

  1. Spiral (10:28)
  2. Q (12:00)
Review: A firm favourite throughout the summer, "Spiral" is Terje at his most 'big room'. Driven by crisp synths and a dynamic chord progression, there's an overwhelming sense of progressiveness throughout that isn't dissimilar to that of Eric Prydz. "Q" continues this mainstage motif with a bold, loopy construction which builds and builds without ever being too over the top. Next level business.

  2. Myggsommer (3:23)
  3. Swing Star (part 1) (4:19)
  4. Swing Star (part 2) (6:44)
Review: Given that Todd Terje's first original material in some five years resulted in one of last year's highlights with the Running Back released Ragysh, it's natural he would want to leave some space before following up. The first of a series of EPs crafted from using one bit of vintage gear in particular, It's The Arps sees Terje dabble with the intricacies of the Arp 2600 analogue synthesizer as well as pay homage to his favourite Monty Python sketch. This is just as nerdy as you'd expect from a man who recently launched a website with the specific intention of exploring the obsessive studio nature of his contemporaries. The aforementioned "Inspector Norse" is an obvious highlight here, slowly unfurling gorgeous layers of playful synthesis that grapple the simplistic drums with flirtatious delight. Naturally for someone who spends most weekends of the year in a nightclub, Terje demonstrates a real prowess for building up the track, teasing your senses once before unleashing the mid point monstrous moment. It makes for another signature track from Terje which is likely to engender a rapturous reception for many months to come. Alongside it, "Myggsommer" provides a brief, twee interlude into oddball sci fi soundscapes which again prove to highlight the Arp 2600's capacity for inventive and idiosyncratic sounds. From here Terje unveils a two part skywards saunter through "Swing Star" showcasing a more dextrous manipulation of the Arp 2600's melodies across the markedly more rhythmic upbeat first part and expansive luxurious cosmic subsequent endeavour. Whilst "Inspector Norse" is guaranteed to be the one track from this release you will hear in the international discotheques, the remainder of It's The Arps serves as a excellent reminder of Terje's ever growing talent as a producer.

  1. This Is A Knife
Review: The platform is extremely crowded, however, and she can't get to Mick, who is standing at the opposite end, so she shouts his name. Two other passengers relay the message to Mick that Sue wants to talk with him. "What does she want?" Mick relays back. "Tell him that I'm not going to marry Richard," Sue shouts. "Why not?" Mick asks. "Because I love you!" she relays. When the message finally gets to Mick, he tries to make his way through the crowd but he can't get to Sue, so he climbs on top of the crowd and walks over the people's shoulders to get to her. In the final scene, they embrace while the crowd cheers.

Review: Next up on Ombra International is Theus Mago, a DJ and producer from Mexico as well as co-founder of the Duro label. From the grinding, neon-lit synthpop of "Ella" (feat Doog) which is followed by some sombre minimal synth journeys - such as the remix up next by Il Est Vilaine and the haunting "Smokey Red Lights" again featuring the nonchalant vocals of Doog. Belgian Arthur Russell (La Dame Noir) delivers a punk-funk rendition up next and label head honcho Curses delivers a cheeky indie-dance version -which also will appeal to fans of the Tel Aviv sound - popularised by the likes of Red Axes and Autarkic.

Review: A regular triple-figure fetch on the auction sites, it was only a matter of time before Henry Thomas & Rise's beautiful 80s soul doublet experienced the strong-armed justice of Fryer. Not just reissued but sourced and tracked down - this is just the start of what will hopefully be a whole load of criminally slept on and unreleased soul from Henry and his troupe. "My Dreams Are Clouded" is a verified club banger with its FM synth ripples and low-down bass bumps while "Don't Wait Too Long" is the ultimate come home record. Slinky, swooning and soaked in raw dollops of emotion - Henry Thomas is, once again, on the rise.

Review: The third Sun Sound twelve inch to arrive at Juno this week is perhaps the most decadent of the lot! Twinkling keys, over the top soul strings and mesmerising vocals give "Plato's Retreat" by Joe Thomas - originally released in 1978 - a similar stomping disco anthem vibe to Candi Station's "Young Hearts Run Free". As per the norm for Sun Sound releases, the original gets a contemporary lick of paint from Paolo Scotti, as does the flipside track "Make Your Move".

Review: The result of a diligent digging quest since he heard DJ Klas drop it many years ago, Lyonaisse editor Waxist has finally track down his own copy of Lamar's 1980 disco soul love gem and given it some serious treatment. Extending the unfettered positivity of the original by almost two minutes (with special attention paid to that immense organ solo), it lives up to its name in every possible way. For authenticity's sake he's also included the original B-side "Take Me To New York". Still standing the test of time impeccably after 35 years, one tickle from the lolloping bassline and swooning keys and your dancefloor will be hooked.

  1. Why Can't We Live Together (original) (4:39)
  2. Why Can't We Live Together (LNTG No More Work rework - Late Night Tuff Guy edit) (7:01)
Review: Last year, legendary disco label T.K released a pair of 12" singles featuring fresh Todd Terje reworks of classic material from K.C & The Sunshine Band. It was such a success that they've decided to repeat the exercise, recruiting Aussie rework specialist Late Night Tough Guy to breathe new life into Timmy Thomas' impassioned anti-war record and the recent subject of sped-up sampling by Drake, "Why Can't We Live Together". Typically, his version is built around a lolloping, disco-friendly house groove, onto which the original record's killer organs and vocals sit. It's tastefully done and hugely playable, of course, though some disco DJs will still prefer to reach for Thomas' impeccable original. Handily, T.K has included that heartfelt slice of soul brilliance on the A-side.

Review: Timmy Thomas, sometimes known as The Magician, frequently regarded as one of the most sampled men beyond the Brown franchise, he's been referenced by everyone from Drake to Dilla to MC Hammer. Here we find two of his most well known cuts, both taken from his 1972 album, Why Can't We Live Together. There's a wry cosmic sheen weaving and shimmering in the background of the soaking wet Afrofunk groove of "Africano" while the keys of "Why Can't We Live Together" instantly hit with a soul you've heard, felt and loved in so many contexts. Certified classic.

Review: Bobby Pleasure's Needs label has been launched as a not-for-profit concern aimed at raising money for worthy causes, and on this second instalment they're setting their sights on British homelessness charity Crisis. They've called upon a cracking cast of deep house operators to help donate their jams to the cause, kicking off with Tilman's infectious, looped up heavy-grooving "Without Your Love". Jonny Rock takes a boogie-inflected, 80s approach on the aptly titled "Oldschool Funk Edit", while Lucky Charmz heads into swooning edit territory on the beautiful "Sun Mountain". Pletnev rounds the record out in fine style with a tripped out bongo roller in the shape of "Babunde'.

Review: Unlike many of their compatriots, Timeless Legend were a soul group who didn't limit themselves to a killer, one-off EP before disappearing into the shadows. Believe us when we say that this is basically what happened to most bands in the 70s. In the case of these guys, they stuck around for a series of albums and singles that have remained engrained in every collector's memory, and that now go for big bucks on the second-hand market. "Everybody Disco" is their 1979 masterpiece, a tune that encapsulates the disco movement perfectly, from the beats to the bass and even the synths. What a hummable dance anthem - grab it before the RSD 2018 stock runs out!

Review: Back in July, a mystery 12" arrived from Germany and raised more than a few eyebrows. Credited to the previously unknown "Todh Teri" (we chuckled, at least) and featuring a blend of jacking house, disco and samples from Indian records, it was one of the summer's more arresting releases. Happily, this return to action from the mystery producer is similarly impressive. He (or she) indulges his (or her) love of sensual Indian disco via the gently beefed-up throb of closer "Sampadan 6", while "Sampadan 5" brilliantly wraps Bollywood strings and harmonica solos around a thrusting Italo-disco groove. Best of all, though, is sleazy and righteous A-side "Sampadan 4", a TB-303-fuelled slammer full of ragged acid lines, restless drum machine handclaps and hazy Indian vocal samples.

  2. O C Tolbert - "Give It To Glory" (5:46)
Review: With Cordial Recordings, LoveVinyl's Roual Galloway is doing a terrific job in making rare, sought-after tracks available to a wider audience. In truth, you'll struggle to find a more rare and expensive gospel killer than The Tolbert Family Singers' "Ride The Gospel Train", a drum machine driven chunk of gospel-boogie with crunchy funk guitars that's been changing hands for hundreds of pounds online. Andrew Weatherall is a fan and it's easy to see why. Flipside "Give it Glory", a solo cut by Tolbert Family patriarch Brother OC Tolbert, is a sweeter and breezier slab of gospel-soul that has never before been released on vinyl. Two killer cuts for the price of one: nice one, Roual!

Review: In 1980 Tina Weymouth was playing bass for the Talking Heads while her husband Chris Frantz played drums. The couple were vacationing in the Bahamas when they met Monty Brown and Stephen Stanley. Together the four set out to make the kind of music that David Byrne and the Talking Heads stayed clear of: romantic, sunny, dance-able pop music. Their debut single, "Genius Of Love" is that classic early 80s cross between synth-pop and hip-hop, and went right to the top of the dance charts, securing them an identity separate from that of Talking Heads. It found a home in the samples of several hip-hop aficionados and was even nicked by Mariah Carey for her 90s hit, "Heartbreaker".

Together with Renault and Pete Mangalore, Tommy Walker III founded the Human Shield Record Co. over a decade ago, and he's also had releases on the Cyber Dance label that Ali runs concurrently. So it's little surprise to see Walker III on Vivod and the Relegade EP makes for pleasantly diverse listening. The title track grips the entire A Side and will resonate with fans of Tuff Sherm material, the stuttering beat seemingly always on the point of all out collapse. Face down, "Hill Battle Aftermath" is a cocky electro funk gem that bursts with vivid colour whilst "Reverse Blunt Maestro Cliff" is best described as what happens with you hook up a drum machine and a sub automatic weapon.

Interestingly, these aural trademarks are played down a little on this follow-up to his 2013 Beats In Space debut. Sure, they can be heard in the picturesque, luscious beauty of flipside "Ferntree Gully", but the title track is an altogether rougher concoction. "Kangaroo Ground" sees the Melbourne man successfully try his hand at acid house, layering twisted 303 lines and occasional cosmic chords over a clanking drum machine rhythm. It's a surprise, but a very impressive one.

Review: In a 2010 interview, Tornado Wallace explained the inspiration behind his distinctive title as "something between a deep south blues artist or a logger from Nebraska". In subsequent years the Australian has seemingly swapped the south blues artist for something southern Italo, keeping the Nebraskan edge with his logger's beard. This is demonstrated in wondrous fashion on the water-coloured artwork to Thinking Aloud, his debut EP for Lovefingers' ESP Institute. Heavy bass plods switch to a walking bassline in "Bit One", as motorised and starry arpeggios weave between breathy vocals that are as much human as they are synthesised. This is complemented by "Cloud Country" which lowers in BPM with more Italo inspired arpeggios, pulsating toms and sprinklings of Latin sounding synths. The title track "Thinking Allowed" hogs the flip, slowly revealing itself to be a Balearic burner of the highest calibre. It opens with an analogous kick-snare combo and a "higher-self" spoken word spiel that's reminiscent of Will Powers legendary "Adventures In Success". Peaks come; troughs go as the track builds sublimely before dovetailing back to its original form. Welcome back sir!
