The Golden Ravedays 12 (12" + MP3 download code)
Cat: TGR 012. Rel: 10 Jan 18
  1. Late Night Skanking (11:46)
  2. Punky Reggae Party (15:10)
Review: The final edition of Aksel Schaufler's ambitious Golden Ravedays project is finally upon us. For many this series will be remembered as one of the most defining musical aspects of 2017, where each month one tremendous 12' after another would come our way and essentially creating a wonderful soundtrack to a very special year: a zeitgeist, if you will! From balearica to new wave Krautrock and cosmic psychedelica to straight up house bombs: the series encapsulates Schaufler's unerring dedication to his craft which has spanned close to 20 years and his seen him become synonymous with the the famed Kompakt imprint and enduring success with his Hippie Dance label. On the A side is the dreamy spaghetti western feel of "Late Night Skanking" with its mesmerizing orchestral sections and otherworldly instrumentation taking you deep into the exotic. On the flip there's some bold and stylish indie-dance on the low slung tip with "Punky Reggae Party" which really nails that Cologne/Dusseldorf style vibe because after all - that was his former stomping ground, before he relocated to Paris.

  2. Watching The World (instrumental)
Review: When they're not reissuing classic LCD Soundsystem material or coaxing an album out of Factory Floor, DFA Records are busy introducing new names to their roster such as Surahn. Formerly a member of Australian live disco outfit The Swiss, Surahn has spent the subsequent period flirting with nu disco stardom as Sidwho, touring with risible operatic compatriots Empire of The Sun and writing for Usher (no lie) His debut for DFA last autumn marked the fulfilment of a long held ambition to appear on the label, and here the masterful Prins Thomas turns a highlight from that self titled release into a typically fruity and expansive Diskomiks.

Priestess (12")
Cat: CRC 01. Rel: 23 Feb 18
  1. Priestess (9:03)
  2. Bravado (6:19)
Review: This two-track missive is a significant one for Harvey Sutherland. Not only does it mark the debut of his Clarity Recordings imprint, but also his first recorded outing with regular backing band Bermuda. Opener "Priestess" is something of an epic, with Sutherland working a tasty groove - think languid, live drums, thick synth-bass and spiraling electronics - for several minutes before unleashing some killer jazz-funk keys and Herbie Hancock style solos. In contrast, flipside "Bravado" is a much more spacey affair, with regular, sweaty drum fills and groovy live bass underpinning wild synthesizer motifs and twinkling electric piano. Both are dancefloor-ready, but warm and loose enough to please jazz dancers as much as disco heads.

  2. Bakazou - "Snake Hip Shuffle" (Swag's Hot Shoe Shuffle dub)
Review: For those who thought these remixes would never see the light of day, let me tell you something: they're hot! The a-side features Swag's "Hot gloves", remixed By Bakazou (aka Pete Herbert). Pete's on fire right now and he came up with an awesome Italo-disco monster. It's like an Apollo space ship - it gets higher and higher and when the original bassline is finally released people go crazy. Tried and tested on discerning crowds. The b-side is equally good, albeit in a different way. Swag's "Hot Shoe Shuffle Dub" sounds like those fantastic hypnotic disco dub mixes straight outta 80's NYC. So put on your dancing shoes and get down to the boogie sound!

  2. You That I Need (3:24)
Review: Sporty Cat Dwight Sykes lets loose with a brand new original and super spacy track from last year's album Songs Volume One for the ever excellent Peoples Potential Unlimited!! "If You Want My Love" is straight out of the '80s playbook thanks to its gossamer synths and on-point female rap (that's delivered by his daughter Valerie Sykes). Flip for the filmic synth boogie introspection of "You That I Need". Another must grip 7" from the PPU crew.

  2. Dance (Disco Heat) (Louie Vega Let's party A Lil dub) (6:53)
  3. Dance (Disco Heat) (short instrumental) (5:57)
Review: While not one of Sylvester's better-known club hits, 1978 jam "Dance (Disco Heat)" is every bit as essential as "I Need You", "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)" and "Over & Over". Here, Masters at Work man Louie Vega offers up his takes on the disco classic, which sits somewhere between the traditional NYC sound and the muscular, arpeggio-heavy electronic style of disco made famous by Giorgio Moroder and Patrick Cowley. Vega's 12-minute A-side "Re-touch" strips out many of the electronic touches, instead focusing on delivering celebratory, peak-time disco abandon. On the flipside you'll find two tasty DJ tools: a loopy, slightly more house-centric dub (which also includes a lengthy filtered section to allow for longer mixes) and a short instrumental mix.

Still so vital and feel-good it stretches across two sides, Ted's iconic falsetto and the honeyed backing harmonies remains as skin-ripplingly powerful as they did in 1977. A cult classic, there's something here for everybody; the cool, the hip and indeed the square.

  2. Below (The Backwoods remix) (7:50)
Review: It's been some five years since we last heard from TBD, the alias used by old pals Lee Douglas and Justin Van Der Volgen for their occasional trips into sleazy, techno-influenced, basement-bothering, jack-track territory. Even by their standards, "Below" is deliciously filthy - a throbbing, pulsating fusion of rave-inspired electronics, dark build-ups, freakish acid lines and thunderous low-end bounce. Old pal DJ Kent (AKA producer Kento Sasaki) dons the occasional Backwoods pseudonym on the flipside remix, delivering a similarly dark but more electro-influenced interpretation that draws more heavily on the original's alien funk electronics.

  3. The Dynamic Energy (Moscoman rework) (6:25)
Review: Since 2014, Moscoman has worked hard to reach the reputation he's at now, and that comes in part to the music he's released on ESP Institute and Cosmo Vitelli's I'm A Cliche. But not simply relying on others to put out his music, Moscoman launched Disco Halal last year which has already notched up a whopping 10 releases, including a reissue of Tony Carey's 1984 album as TCP, which he indulgently remixes three times on this release. Appropriately, Moscoman tackles the album's title-track, shining a spotlight on the production's chorus of vocals, while the "Oasis" remix plays with Italo melodies, subtle middle eastern themes in a producton almost made for a Beverly Hills Cop scene. "A Voice Across The Nile" opens the 12" with a slinky drum track however Moscoman does let a cascading synth open up for some undeniable '80s vibes.

Review: New York meets Brighton as both label and artist step out on wax for the first time. This is a new, exciting realm for Homage, but they surely know they're onto a winner with the feel good disco edit tones of Tech Support. There are classics embedded into these fine jams, with "Feel It" coming on particularly summery in its laid back disco funk stylings. "Inside Out" is slightly more looped up, but no less uplifting, while "Clarity" heads into a more woozy, filtered groove that feels inspired by the likes of Theo Parrish's Ugly Edits. By way of contrast "Sugar" is a much more electronic affair that kicks with purpose while simultaneously reaching for the stars.

Review: Millionhands head honcho Tom Mangan is back as Tee Mango on Aus Music - this would be his third appearance on the label in less than a year - which speaks volumes really. EP#2 features the lo-slung sexiness of "Make It Last Forever" featuring that awesome Inner Life sample throughout. On the flip, we have the funky deep-disco bounce of "Wazoo" that's perfect mood lighting for the early evening, while something a bit more energetic and harder hitting exists in the form of "Prototypical". A soulful and emotive house journey featuring gritty rhythms, a tough bouncy bassline and trippy stabs that's perfect to take crowd into the later hours - we absolutely loved this one!

Review: Earlier this year saw Hell Yeah Recordings unleash the freaky sound world that was Fabrizio Mammarella's debut long player under his long running Telespazio alias. If you haven't checked it yet, we suggest you remedy that as Mammarella delivered a most idiosyncratic album of cosmic disco funk. The eight tracks were ripe for reinvention so kudos to Hell Yeah for pulling together a quartet of like-minded souls to remix some of the Telespazio cuts. Freerange artist Kito Jempere turns in a wonderfully broken Jazz State Of Mind remix of "Glide Shot" with some sublime synth touches, whilst Wolf Muller goes typically off piste with a stuttering Dusseldorf beatdown take on "Barrier". Australian producer Harvey Sutherland turns in a far sighted deep house rendition of "Rays" whilst Hell Yeah act Tempelhof go all ambient Balearic on "Nuvolari".

Review: The subject of legendary edits by DJ Harvey and Joey Negro (and, sadly, a few unofficial reissues on poor quality vinyl) Tenderness's signature feel good thrust is felt on an official reissue right here. "Gotta Keep On Trying" is a powerful piece of disco with gutsy vocals, a super-tight guitar groove and backing vocals that have never aged since its 78 release. "Telly Love" closes on a rampant gospel drive with such a triumphant finale you'll need to play it again to make sure you're not dreaming. Tenderly timeless.

  4. Swing Star (part 2) (6:44)
Review: Given that Todd Terje's first original material in some five years resulted in one of last year's highlights with the Running Back released Ragysh, it's natural he would want to leave some space before following up. The first of a series of EPs crafted from using one bit of vintage gear in particular, It's The Arps sees Terje dabble with the intricacies of the Arp 2600 analogue synthesizer as well as pay homage to his favourite Monty Python sketch. This is just as nerdy as you'd expect from a man who recently launched a website with the specific intention of exploring the obsessive studio nature of his contemporaries. The aforementioned "Inspector Norse" is an obvious highlight here, slowly unfurling gorgeous layers of playful synthesis that grapple the simplistic drums with flirtatious delight. Naturally for someone who spends most weekends of the year in a nightclub, Terje demonstrates a real prowess for building up the track, teasing your senses once before unleashing the mid point monstrous moment. It makes for another signature track from Terje which is likely to engender a rapturous reception for many months to come. Alongside it, "Myggsommer" provides a brief, twee interlude into oddball sci fi soundscapes which again prove to highlight the Arp 2600's capacity for inventive and idiosyncratic sounds. From here Terje unveils a two part skywards saunter through "Swing Star" showcasing a more dextrous manipulation of the Arp 2600's melodies across the markedly more rhythmic upbeat first part and expansive luxurious cosmic subsequent endeavour. Whilst "Inspector Norse" is guaranteed to be the one track from this release you will hear in the international discotheques, the remainder of It's The Arps serves as a excellent reminder of Terje's ever growing talent as a producer.

Driven by crisp synths and a dynamic chord progression, there's an overwhelming sense of progressiveness throughout that isn't dissimilar to that of Eric Prydz. "Q" continues this mainstage motif with a bold, loopy construction which builds and builds without ever being too over the top. Next level business.

Review: The platform is extremely crowded, however, and she can't get to Mick, who is standing at the opposite end, so she shouts his name. Two other passengers relay the message to Mick that Sue wants to talk with him. "What does she want?" Mick relays back. "Tell him that I'm not going to marry Richard," Sue shouts. "Why not?" Mick asks. "Because I love you!" she relays. When the message finally gets to Mick, he tries to make his way through the crowd but he can't get to Sue, so he climbs on top of the crowd and walks over the people's shoulders to get to her. In the final scene, they embrace while the crowd cheers.

From the grinding, neon-lit synthpop of "Ella" (feat Doog) which is followed by some sombre minimal synth journeys - such as the remix up next by Il Est Vilaine and the haunting "Smokey Red Lights" again featuring the nonchalant vocals of Doog. Belgian Arthur Russell (La Dame Noir) delivers a punk-funk rendition up next and label head honcho Curses delivers a cheeky indie-dance version -which also will appeal to fans of the Tel Aviv sound - popularised by the likes of Red Axes and Autarkic.

Not just reissued but sourced and tracked down - this is just the start of what will hopefully be a whole load of criminally slept on and unreleased soul from Henry and his troupe. "My Dreams Are Clouded" is a verified club banger with its FM synth ripples and low-down bass bumps while "Don't Wait Too Long" is the ultimate come home record. Slinky, swooning and soaked in raw dollops of emotion - Henry Thomas is, once again, on the rise.

Review: The third Sun Sound twelve inch to arrive at Juno this week is perhaps the most decadent of the lot! Twinkling keys, over the top soul strings and mesmerising vocals give "Plato's Retreat" by Joe Thomas - originally released in 1978 - a similar stomping disco anthem vibe to Candi Station's "Young Hearts Run Free". As per the norm for Sun Sound releases, the original gets a contemporary lick of paint from Paolo Scotti, as does the flipside track "Make Your Move".

Review: The result of a diligent digging quest since he heard DJ Klas drop it many years ago, Lyonaisse editor Waxist has finally track down his own copy of Lamar's 1980 disco soul love gem and given it some serious treatment. Extending the unfettered positivity of the original by almost two minutes (with special attention paid to that immense organ solo), it lives up to its name in every possible way. For authenticity's sake he's also included the original B-side "Take Me To New York". Still standing the test of time impeccably after 35 years, one tickle from the lolloping bassline and swooning keys and your dancefloor will be hooked.

Review: Last year, legendary disco label T.K released a pair of 12" singles featuring fresh Todd Terje reworks of classic material from K.C & The Sunshine Band. It was such a success that they've decided to repeat the exercise, recruiting Aussie rework specialist Late Night Tough Guy to breathe new life into Timmy Thomas' impassioned anti-war record and the recent subject of sped-up sampling by Drake, "Why Can't We Live Together". Typically, his version is built around a lolloping, disco-friendly house groove, onto which the original record's killer organs and vocals sit. It's tastefully done and hugely playable, of course, though some disco DJs will still prefer to reach for Thomas' impeccable original. Handily, T.K has included that heartfelt slice of soul brilliance on the A-side.

Here we find two of his most well known cuts, both taken from his 1972 album, Why Can't We Live Together. They've called upon a cracking cast of deep house operators to help donate their jams to the cause, kicking off with Tilman's infectious, looped up heavy-grooving "Without Your Love". Jonny Rock takes a boogie-inflected, 80s approach on the aptly titled "Oldschool Funk Edit", while Lucky Charmz heads into swooning edit territory on the beautiful "Sun Mountain". Pletnev rounds the record out in fine style with a tripped out bongo roller in the shape of "Babunde'.

Review: Unlike many of their compatriots, Timeless Legend were a soul group who didn't limit themselves to a killer, one-off EP before disappearing into the shadows. Believe us when we say that this is basically what happened to most bands in the 70s. In the case of these guys, they stuck around for a series of albums and singles that have remained engrained in every collector's memory, and that now go for big bucks on the second-hand market. "Everybody Disco" is their 1979 masterpiece, a tune that encapsulates the disco movement perfectly, from the beats to the bass and even the synths. What a hummable dance anthem - grab it before the RSD 2018 stock runs out!
