Spring Rain (stereo) (limited 7")
Cat: OSV 118. Rel: 29 Jul 14
  1. Silvetti - "Spring Rain"
  2. Bataan - "The Bottle"
Review: This latest release from the Outta Sight label places two true Latin heavyweights on one super special 7". Proceedings commence with the life affirming Balearic piano slapper "Spring Rain" by the Grammy Award winning Argentinean composer Juan Silvetti, which was originally released back in 1977. The lolloping bassline and naked keys make for a wonderful introduction to the track and the moment it opens up into the full vocal harmonic beauty is musical heaven. Meanwhile on the flip we hit one of the best cover versions the Latin quarter has ever given us in a vibrant interpretation of Gil Scott-Heron's "The Bottle", courtesy of Salsoul co-founder Bataan Nitoliano. Stunning.

Safe (7")
Cat: SDE 29. Rel: 01 Nov 17
  1. Safe (4:12)
  2. I Wanna Be Closer (4:05)
Review: Since turning their back on hush-hush re-edits in favour of issuing obscure or previously unreleased material, the Super Disco Edits label has barely put a foot wrong. Their latest 7" boasts two previously unissued recordings by former Reflections member John Simmons, who later went on to work as Whitney Houston's "creative director". Both tracks were recorded in 1979, originally as demos for a band Simmons was working with. "Safe", in particular, is superb; a jazz-funk-tinged chunk of modern soul rich in cosmic bass, crunchy Clavinet motifs, twinkling electric piano solos and jazzy guitar flourishes. Simmons' vocal, too, is rather special. Flipside "I Wanna Be Closer" is similarly funk-fuelled whilst retaining the smooth, soulful vibe that marked out Simmons' early productions.

  2. Oyvind Morken - "En Navneles Jaevel"

  4. Jarle Brathen - "Track 4" (Omar V remix)
Review: Way back in 2005, Prins Thomas called upon Todd Terje to launch his own Full Pupp label, an offshoot of Bear Entertainment and since then the label has provided a constant stream of Norwegian disco from the likes of Diskjokke, Blackbelt Andersen, Marius Vareid and of course Prins Thomas. To celebrate a decade of releasing records the Nordic outpost deliver a four-part vinyl sampler series (and separate CD version) with focus on talents from Norway. And first up on this third sampler is a Prins Thomas edit of Sex Tags Mania character Skatebard and his bubbly, xylophone paddled "Sequence". Recent label debutant Oyvind Morken delivers a croaky-Tropicana-themed "En Navneles Jaevel", while Prins Thomas provides his own track with the jolly bassline that is "Alpha Tanga Lama". Jarle Brathen returns to the series after appearing on the first sampler, this time in remix form with Omar V's Italo disco version of "Track 4" that in parts whispers New Order's "Blue Monday" into your ear.

Cat: JVSP 1201. Rel: 16 Mar 16
  1. Nite Time Melody (4:41)
  2. Nite Time Melody (instrumental) (5:33)
Review: Recorded in 1983, never released, forever the subject of hushed-toned disco and boogie collectors... Skytrane was the brainchild of boogie professor and studio scientist du jour Steve Mannen. And while no one knows why this never saw the official light of day, it's certainly been rescued and restored with care for this limited release. The production of this salubrious slap-bass / synth jam is enormous and Madeleine Davis's voice really shines over the groove. Unless you're playing the instrumental, of course, which is equally satisfying.

  2. The Rejected - "O Craque De Futbol" (6:50)
  3. Pontchartrain - "Have A Little Taste" (7:04)
Review: Whiskey Disco's first missive of 2018 is something of a sweaty beast, with a quartet of producers stepping up to deliver some sticky dancefloor heat. Label chief Sleazy McQueen joins forces with Vagabundo Social Club on A-side edit "Boh!", a slamming rework of a Bohannon-esque disco-funk jam rich in hard guitar riffs and crunchy Clavinet lines. The Rejected takes a different approach on the flipside, serving up a rolling, delay-laden tweak of celebratory, soccer-themed Brazilian club jam "O Craque De Futbol". Sunny, funky and low-slung, it's accompanied on side B by the gently housed-up swamp funk of Pontchartrain's "Have a Little Taste". Given the quality of the EP, we're more than happy to follow that instruction.

Review: Slight Delay aka Tiago makes a welcome addition to the Vibrations camp with this supreme e.p of leftfield house. 'West Sonic Vibe' is a deep eastern infused tropical gem with 'Party Over' taking on a harder edge on the same mystical journey. Oz producer of the moment Inkswel takes on the remix duties and rocks 'Party Over' into a slower funked up, bass line heavy trip via Sugarhill.

  2. Second Fiddle
  3. Everything (We Are)
  4. Everything (We Are) (Cameo Culture remix)
Review: It's been a long time coming, the debut Slow Hands EP Everything (We Are) on Wolf + Lamb Records. Yes, you read that right, this is the first EP to be released by the long time W+L artist, Slow Hands.

Known to his friends & family as Ryan Cavanagh, the native Vermonter has maintained a career as both a live musician, and DJ through a consistent release of singles and remixes for W+L, as well as Permanent Vacation, K7, and Bedrock to name a few. With Everything (We Are), Cavanagh sets out to deliver a preview of the diversity that will be expressed in the great number of songs set to be released in the coming year, and longly anticipated LP.

The organic foundation is laid early with the funk fueled Miss White. A song steered by it's live rhythm section, vocals, guitar, as well as it's elaborate arrangement. Second Fiddle, a staple in Slow Hands' recent live sets, is the very epitome of his traditional verse/chorus composition style over loose and energetic beats. The EP slows tempo with it's title ballad Everything (We Are), a display of Cavanagh's recently discovered raw vocals, and a powerfully emotional chorus, reinforced by the vocals of Dave Robertson.

Robertson, more widely known as Cameo Culture, who also acts as co-producer, and musician on this release, concludes the EP with a compelling rendition of the title song. Driving things home with a more rock inspired re-harmonization of Everything (We Are), Robertson augments what will be the theme of all forthcoming Slow Hands' releases; organics, musicianship, and diversity.

Tyranny Of Fun EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: FINA 018. Rel: 30 Mar 15
  1. The Skin Horse
  2. Cupboard Of Love
  3. Honey
Review: FINA Records presents 'Tyranny of Fun', the debut EP from Slow Learner. The coining of the new alias 'Slow Learner', marks a new chapter and musical direction for an already established artist who is by no means new to the game. Preferring to start afresh and steer clear from associations, the somewhat reclusive figure from the South Coast is now focused instead on allowing his new output to speak solely for itself. And his debut release under his new pseudonym achieves just that. 'Tyranny of Fun' is an accomplished sonic offering that reveals a versatile sound characterized by original combinations of samples, depth and range. The EPs opener, 'The Skin Horse' is surely one for the after afters - a dark and off kilter growler of a track whose prevailing bassline and waltz time beat provide a brooding backdrop and relentless rolling nod to its intricate fusion of dissident chords, dusty synths and jazz stabs. On the flip side, an unpredictable 'Cupboard Love' starts muted and deep but soon surprises, opening out into a warm and progressive feel-good groove. Mixing things up again, Slow Learner impulsively cuts up the flow 4 minutes in with a funk-filled refrain, leaving the track dancing in and around dirtier disco territories. Last up, a made for vinyl 'Honey' goes deeper still; a delectably crafted down tempo offering whose syrupy vocals stir and evocative cross-rhythm synths, coupled with the vintage analogue percussion, ooze an unmistakable old 90's deep house sound.

  1. That's The Body (5:35)
  2. On & Off (5:09)
  3. Mort Automatique (3:42)
  4. Frutta (7:32)
Review: Domestica continues its on-going trawl through the archives of S.M Nurse, an Amsterdam-based synth-wave trio who recorded a serious amount of material between 1980 and '83 before all but vanishing. That's The Body gathers together a quartet of dancefloor-friendly excursions. On the A you'll find the stylized minimal wave/electrofunk fusion of "That's The Body" and wavy, high-tempo thrust of "Off & On", both of which originally appeared on the band's earliest release. On the flip you'll find two previously unreleased versions of similarly vintage tracks: the alien synths, woozy B-52s vocals and tough machine drums of "Mort Automatique", and the hazy melancholy of "Frutta", which boasts a particularly druggy arpeggio bassline.

  1. You Know I Love You
  2. You Know I Love You (dub)
Review: PPU may have expanded its remit to issue contemporary acts like Pender Street Steppers and, soon, Beautiful Swimmers but the label is still digging through the soul and boogie archives of forgotten US acts. The work of George Franklin Smallwood has provided a source of much inspiration for Peoples Potential Unlimited over the years with the archivally minded label issuing several singles, a DVD and a Christmas album from the local Washington DC artist. Here PPU grant Smallwood's soul gem "You Know I Love" it's first 12" release having first surfaced at some unspecified time in the early '80s and is worth investigating for the drum machine heavy dub version on the flip!

  2. The People Come Together (7:08)
  3. Wonderlust (7:08)
Review: Making his debut appearance with the Magic Circles Music label, Smashed Atoms lays down the law with a bubbly, warm and disco-inflected vision of contemporary house music for the groovier end of a warm up session. "Holding On" bursts with positivity as chirpy organ stabs and plush pads swirl around the slow but strong rhythm section. "The People Come Together" meanwhile gets a late 80s boogie kink in its swagger, ramping up the bass and throwing in some powerful chord progressions to get the soul stirring. "Wonderlust" finishes the EP off with a breezy, summer-ready jam for feel-good times in the sun or under the stars.

Cut This Way (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MCM 002. Rel: 16 Oct 17
  1. Cut This Way
  2. Lost Someone
Review: Smashed Atoms make a return after launching the Magic Circles label earlier in the year, bringing more of that sassy disco flavoured house music with a fondness for the good old way of doing things. The nods to "Rapture" are hard to ignore on "Cut This Way" even if the ingredients are fresh, and there's no denying it's the perfect formula for an addictive dancefloor cut with an old-skool hip hop monologue over the top. "Lost Someone" is a more sprightly affair that plays off bouncy synth lines and another discoid drum groove to create its infectious good time message.

Review: SMBD aka Simbad is back on GAMM again after a longer break and said to be planning a few EPs with seasonal themes for the label. The first EP as you might expect delivers three tasteful season influenced reworks and remixes which the label claims will 'be your perfect DJ weapons over the Summer months.' If the Afro broken beat groove of Bootsy's "Rather Be With You" (Alphabets Heaven X SMBD remix) won't do it for you, or the super soulful Colonel Abrams tribute "Table 42" (SMBD Tribute) does not grab your attention, guaranteed that the stunning 4/4 rework with Mike Lowrey of Jazzy Jeff's Summer classic "Summertime" has the potential to be a huge tune in the coming months.

Review: Brighton jazz/soul two piece Soccer96 get a makeover for their Jupiter Masterdrive release from 2014. NYC's legendary Danny Krivit gives "Flight Formation" a re-edit that only a true master of the artform truly can. He definitely emphasises the best parts of the track, not to mention all the uplifting soulfulness of it.. like he does! Berlin's purveyor of dusty hip-hop influenced deep house Glenn Astro also steps up to resplice the source material of said track too, giving it his Midas touch. Finally Danvers does a remix of "Step Overs" and does a fine job, remaking the track into a deep funky house jam that honours the late nineties sound, vaguely reminiscent of the French Touch style.

Review: Rock out with your frock out, Passport To Paradise's soft lads are back with four more deviant edits; "Thur Wit Waitin" takes a dusty, slightly yachty AOR piece and gives it the necessary dancefloor swing it's always been crying for. "Anybody Out There" continues the big air guitar feels with gusto before flipping the trippy switch with the strange processed vocals midway. "Mousso Mousso" is a much more sultry affair with its light Afrofunk lace and air of French finesse while "JP Wave" finishes the affair with a shimmering dub twist. Bon voyage.

  1. Super Breaker (feat Margarita Thompson)
  2. Super Breaker (instrumental)
Review: Another essential history lesson here from the Peoples Potential Unlimited camp. "Super Breaker" is an early production by Miami bass legend James McCauley, better known as Maggotron,DJX or Basstech. It was originally released by the super obscure Bound Sound label in 1984, but was quickly forgotten. As one of McCauley's earliest works, it arguably marks the point where electro began to morph into Miami bass. There are vocal and instrumental versions on this must have 7", both featuring a mix of long synth chords, oh-so thick synth bass and a healthy dose of vintage drum machine breaks.

It's pleasing then, to see that Barrott has elected to let International Feel grow further introducing yet another of his own musical projects in the shape of The Sonic Aesthetic. Now based in Ibiza, its clear the Mediterranean sun is having beneficial effects on Barrott with the three tracks here operating on a murky' lo BPM subterranean house flex. Face up track "Mendicant Adventures" is the clear stand out here, feeling like the hazy memories of a warehouse party slowly setting in concrete.

  3. Shine (This Is It) (Ray Mang radio version)
Review: Soul Clap definitely knew what they were doing when they snapped up certifiable diva legend Nona Hendryx to sing on one of the cuts from their self-titled 2016 album. Now Ray Mang has got his mitts on the parts to "Shine (This Is It)" and turned out three versions for his own Mangled label - the classic combination of extended vocal, instrumental and radio edit versions. Whichever cut suits you best, the vibe is the same; a bold and bright summer party track splashed with horns, keys and plenty more besides, although the smart money is on Hendryx's legendary vocal, which soars as though no time has passed since her days working with Material in 80s NYC.

Review: Eccentric, California-based imprint Take Away has put out some impressive 12" singles since launching earlier in the year. Predictably, this two-tracker from the little-known Soul Reductions is another stone cold killer. A-side "Got To Be Loved" - a bouncy, pitched-up disco-house floorfiller that sits somewhere between Tiger & Woods and late '90s "French Touch" house - leads the way, sounding like the kind of cut that will quickly raise the temperature out on the dancefloor. Flipside "A Rose Is A Rose" is a deeper and woozier offering, delivering a rolling house re-interpretation of a boogie-era electrofunk gem with added filter effects.
