Razormaid Mixes (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ERC 057. Rel: 12 Mar 18
  1. Eternal (US club mix)
  2. Prisoner To Desire (Alcatraz mix)
  3. Unveiling The Secret (exclusive re-edit)
  4. Ecstasy (Joseph Watt extended mix)
Review: Emotional Rescue make no attempt to hide their love of classic 80s cutters Razormaid's remixes, and on this occasion they're shining a light on the pumped up dancefloor versions of cult Canadian synthwave concern Psyche. The "US Club Mix" of "Eternal" is a perfect, swooning synth pop belter with weight in all the right places to work on the floor. "Prisoner To Desire (Alcatraz Mix)" is a snarling stomper that almost touches on acidic synth lines underneath the impassioned vocals, and then an exclusive re-edit of "Unveiling The Secret" ups the tempo while letting the catchy pop edge to Psyche's sound shine through. The record finishes with the fevered intensity of Joseph Watt's extended mix of "Ecstasy".

  1. Gotta Hold On Me (12:13)
  2. Wildman (6:54)
Review: You have to hand it to Psychemagik. The duo is renowned for their crate-digging skills, as showcased on the various must-have compilations they've curated for Leng and Eskimo Recordings. Those digging skills come to the fore on their re-edit releases, too. In truth, few would be able to name the source material for "Gotta Hold On Me", an undulating, dubbed-out chunk of peak-time disco-soul built around spacey synth-bass, rising horn lines - judiciously smothered in space echo - and impassioned male vocals. Flipside "Wildman" is equally impressive, with jammed out electric piano solos doing their best to raise the temperature in cahoots with a Dinosaur style leftfield disco groove.

  1. The Trip (7:24)
  2. Sisters Of The Moon (6:44)
Review: It's been a while since celebrated crate diggers-turned-re-editors Psychemagik treated us to some sublime scalpel works. Predictably, the two edits showcased here - both of little-known tracks discovered during their dusty-fingered digging missions around the world - are both top notch. A-side "The Trip" is a fine chunk of psychedelic-era druid funk - a veritable pagan ritual full of acid-fried, floor-friendly rock grooves, hallucinogenic flourishes and hazy, hug-a-stranger chorus vocals. Flip for "Sisters of the Moon", a drowsy, loved-up and thoroughly eccentric slice of slow bliss smothered in wavy synths, lilting steel guitar and sumptuous orchestration. It's great to have them back.

Fleetmac Wood (12" repress)
Cat: FMW 001. Rel: 18 Jun 18
  1. Psychemagik - "Dreams" (Crystal Visions remix) (9:23)
  2. Red Ken - "Big Love" (Big Four Letter Word mix) (6:17)
Review: Psychemagik love Fleetwood Mac. Their love is so enduring that the dusty fingered editors/DJs/revered record collectors have gone so far as to found Fleetmac Wood, a club night dedicated to the work of Fleetwood, Nicks, McVie and the various other manifestations, where anything goes so long as it's Fleetwood Mac related. Their remix of "Dreams" has been getting playtime at the night - and by other well regarded DJs - and finally makes an appearance on this limited 12". What's immediately noticeable about the Crystal Visions Remix of "Dreams" is how much they add to the track without messing with the original's essence - it's also a lot more inventive than Psychemagik's 2009 edit of "Everywhere" which shows how far they've come in three years. Flip over for a great extension of Juno's favourite Mac moment "Big Love" from AOR Disco's Red Ken.

  1. Charlene (4:43)
  2. Midnight Mirrors (5:07)
Review: Having come to the fore with a pair of boogie slammers on the Cosmic Chronic label, Mickey De Grand IV's Psychic Mirrors outfit ascend to parent operation People's Potential Unlimited with the excellent Charlene. Allegedly recorded with the help of a ten piece live band, both the title track and "Midnight Mirrors" are evocative of the sort of modern lo-fi funk that PPU corners the market in these days. Bringing the Miami heat, "Charlene" is a veritable dancefloor bomb, with a rugged boogie bassline the sort of flirtatious element that hips can't say no to. B Side cut "Midnight Mirrors" is more of a late night number with some exquisite synth work. Props to PPU!

  3. Devil In Me (Fatboy Slim remix) (5:38)
Review: Leipzig based Purple Disco Machine is up next on Australian dance-pop label Sweat It Out: carrying on the legacy of the beloved and legendary DJ Ajax who passed away back in 2014. Real name Tino Piontek, he's had a successful run of releases: appearing everywhere from OFF to Nurvous and even main room specialists Defected. Featuring the fine vocal talents of the one and only Duane Harden (who appeared on such classics as "You Don't Know Me" by Armand Van Helden) and Joe Killington of The Funktuary. An unholy mixture of bluesy country-inflected '70s rock and funky house. And let's not ignore the elephant in the room here: yes there is an absolutely jumping remix by UK big beat hero Fatboy Slim: and he's in top form as always with his party starting rendition.

  2. Love For Days (PDM extended mix) (5:20)
  3. Love For Days (Motez remix) (5:34)
Review: Given the serious disco-house credentials of '90s survivor Boris Dlugosch and contemporary nu-disco chops of hyped outfit Purple Disco Machine, you'd expect "Love For Days" to be pretty darn hot. It is, of course, with Purple Disco Machine's extended mix - nestled on the B-side - offering the perfect mixture of strong diva vocals (provided by Karen Harding), sweeping disco orchestration and modern disco-house trickery. Arguably the best version, though, comes from Masters at Work legend Kenny Dope, whose fluid rework utilizes looser, live-sounding percussion, far more orchestration and all manner of original disco-era references. Motez completely flips the script on B2, serving up a skipping, Champagne sipping version that brilliantly joins the dots between disco and two-step UK garage.

  1. Thinking About You
  2. Thinking About You (Lauer remix)
  3. Thinking About You (Fort Romeau remix)
Review: Pushing Movies is a collaborative project from Jeffrey Sire and Dimitri SoEmotional that celebrates the vintage tones of Italo disco, synth pop and all things slick and 80s. "Thinking About You" does indeed sound like it could have been made 30 years ago - from the slap bass to the reverse drum fills, plastic FM synth lines and overall aspirational tone, it's the consummate extended 12" mix track. Lauer takes the original and smacks it up sharp with some tougher drums and a greater sense of urgency, and then Fort Romeau takes a subtle approach that keeps much of the original spirit of the track intact while honing the edges for maximum club play and using some cosmic synth flourishes to devastating effect.

Review: Metropolis- is it an actual city or a digital fantasy; a construct formed inside a synthetic brain? Either way this is the soundtrack to a city that exists somewhere. Where millions of human threads interweave, and a machine conciousness drifts by on the periphery, searching for an intimate connection. Limited pressing. Vinyl, tape and digital.

  1. Lets Go All The Way (6:05)
  2. Just Be Yourself (10:08)
Review: Derry boys Queen & Disco return for a third outing on their eponymous label, serving up two gently straightened out edits tweaked for peak-time plays. On the A-side you'll find the rising strings, rich orchestration and celebratory vocals of "Let's Go All The Way", a guitar solo-laden disco bumper tailor made for party-starting fun. Arguably even better is "Just Be Yourself", a high-octane disco thumper that's a little more loopy and house-friendly in construction. It sits somewhere between the thumping loop jams of Soundstream, the riotously camp thrust of Sylvester, and the "drum machine added" edit thrills of Boogie Cafe boss man Jimmy The Twin.

  4. Give Me A Minute (bonus beats) (4:37)
Review: This surprise single from boogie band Qwestlife has a lot going for it. For starters, it's a fabulously catchy song, with the kind of chorus that you'll find yourself singing in the shower for days to come. Coupled with the boogie-era authenticity of the instrumentation (think D'Train synth squiggles, cowbells, heavy synth bass, and so on) and production, it's an almost perfect chunk of electrofunk revivalism that steers clear of "hollow tribute" territory. Happily, the alternative mixes - particularly the "Dubbed Out Version" - are also in keeping with the band's early '80s New York inspirations. In fact, both that mix and the tidy "Bonus Beats" versions sound like they could have been the work of original boogie-dub maestros Paul Simpson (Serious Intention) and Winston Jones (Pushe); we can't think of much higher praise than that.

  4. Ifa (Jacques Renault dub) (5:52)
Review: Since 2015, Tel Aviv twosome Rabo & Snob has been delivering annual releases on re-edit stable Whiskey Disco. Here they make the transfer to one of Sleazy McQueen's other imprints, Lovedancing, with some tasty original productions. "Yawumna", featuring Somma Idrisu, effortlessly underpins jangly acoustic guitars and African vocals with a metronomic nu-disco groove, while "Afia", featuring vocalist Azizaa, sounds like an unlikely fusion of Afrobeat and Adonis's "No Way Back". Art of Tones provides an organ-laden, sunshine-soaked Afro-house revision of "Yawumna", while Jacques Renault provides a suitably chunky dub of "Ifa" for those late night moments.

  3. Messages From The Stars (Short Wave mix) (3:59)
Review: Amongst synthesizer fetishists and electro-funk enthusiasts, Rah Band's "Messages From The Stars" has long been a cherished record. It's also a rather unusual one; a British-made electro era record that combines the kind of cutting-edge electronic instrumentation and production techniques more frequently found on contemporaneous New York records (copious amounts of delay, extensive TR-808 and Linn drum use, and so on) with the eccentricity of post-punk era UK synth-pop. This reissue presents re-mastered versions of Hewson's three original versions, of which the trippy and extended "Long Wave Mix" and more percussive, delay-laden "Astro Mix" (effectively the club-focused dub) are the standouts. If you don't already own a copy, get this quick.

Review: Hands down winner of 'title of the week', this cheeky disco number is brought to us by Chicago veteran Rahaan. Boasting the vocals of the mysterious Saucy Lady, the original is a warm and glowing retro disco romp complete with authentic brass and strings. Rahaan also provides a larger, extended mix in which he strips the opulence down to a more bareback groove, inserting a big and nasty raw electro bassline to help bring the dancefloor to a suitable climax (of joy).

  1. Move Out The Way

  3. Blue Line
Review: Edit king Rahaan makes a connection with the ever-prolific Lumberjacks In Hell, and he's sounding feisty on growling lead track "Move Out Of The Way". Dirty, distorted drums and simmering acid gurgles make for a perfect seedy dancefloor lube, setting the scene for the more forthright jack beat styles of "Super Transfer". Keeping the fuzzed out Chicago styles at the forefront, "Blue Line" swoops in at the end like some long lost Trax off-cut with all the grit and guts you would expect from the earliest days of pure, electronic house music.

Review: The music of London based collective Los Charly's Orchestra dips a 70s boogie sound with a Latin touch, and lends itself well to the exemplary mixing talents of Chi-town don Rahaan, who remixes "Swinging To The Bass" for Dopeness Galore Holland. Rahaan captures the funk that lies at the core of this track, using it as the base on which to manipulate and twist the music. It's a light footed disco cut, with a hook that slices clean through the spattering of jazz-licked murmurings. The dub mix overwhelms you with a driving bass line and tinkling piano solo, with Rahaan borrowing each epic element and composing a fresh and lively sound. Do check.

Review: Here, re-born Italo-disco stable Full Time Records digs deep into its archives for sought-after gems from 1982. On the A-side you'll find the original version of Rainbow Team's sugary-sweet, string-drenched disco shuffler "Bite The Apple" (first featured on their A Song For You album) accompanied by a brand new deep boogie "Dub Edit" by storied Italian DJ/producer Massimo Berardi. On the B-side you'll find two versions of Selection's brilliant "I'm So Glad": a loopy, gently beefed-up contemporary edit from LTJ and the '82 original, which could well be one of the greatest Italian boogie tracks ever made. Essential stuff, all told.

Review: Emotional Rescue once more on the hard to find party curio tip, this time tapping up the work of one Ken Ramm whose 1984 burner "Spark The Universe" was previously fetching handsome prices online, and with good reason. The funk is loose and limber on the track, not least when it comes to the bassline and psyched-out worldly percussion. The dub mix pushes out into trippier territory, and then Emotional bossman Chuggy takes the reins on the flip for his own Disco mix of the original. Whichever version you plump for, you're onto a winner.

Review: Having previously popped up on ESP Institute, Juan Ramos teams up with Trent to form Greenvision, making their first appearance on the home of freshly squeezed discoid deviance, Cocktail D'Amore. "Surdinia" takes over the A side with a bombastic array of peak time devices in its utility belt, from bubbling acid tweaks to gluttonous monosynth leads and a chunky set of drums. "Meccanica" is no slouch either, laying down thick slabs of synthesized grease in pursuit of a different kind of party track. This is unusual, distinctive club music for those who want the crowd to stop and pay attention.

Seeped in powerful vocal harmonies, "Let Go" is rare groove gold with smooth sax and a dynamic that keeps on surprising while "Will You Be There" is an end of night soul shakedown with a tenderness that's tangible in every element. Review: Red Greg, on Moton, delivers a trio of edits of obscure cuts from his seemingly endless record collection. Ten-minute A-side "Movin" is an undulating disco treat built around a killer bassline, twinkling melodies, punchy orchestration and one hell of a female vocal. On the flip you'll find the jaunty, horn-heavy disco-funk bump of "Desire", a superb rework of a barely known, bilingual gem, and the spiraling Caribbean disco-funk insanity that is peak-time workout/synthesizer wig-out "Trinidad Duke". All three edits have been "secret weapons" for the dusty-fingered DJ for some time, and can now be yours for less than nine English pounds. What's not to like?

Review: As regular as London buses and twice as pungent, the Black Aroma edits series has been responsible for some of the greatest scalpel cut-ups of recent times. For volume ten, main man Twice has taken a back seat, instead serving up a quintet of rubs from a trio of vastly experienced editors. Red Greg gets things going with the celebratory disco loveliness that is "Ride On", before Sound Signature alumnus Specter drops to bombs: the Brazilian jazz-funk genius of "Chedda" and the low-slung, boogie-era disco-funk throb of "Double Dribble". Long serving Italian editor LTJ rounds things off, first making merry with a bass-heavy Brazilian disco-funk outing ("Sotcha") before dipping the tempo for the loved-up, saucer-eyed soul of "You Got Me Dreamin".
