  6. Jamaica Running (European remix) (5:00)
Review: Patrick Keel started his career as a drummer with various unsuccessful bands, before buying a synthesizer in 1980 and forming "one-man-band" The Pool. While he released numerous albums and singles over a five-year period, it's 1983 single "Dance It Down" that has stood the test of time. This Dark Entries reissue features the punchy, electro-influenced new-wave original and spacey Dub from the U.S 12", plus the lesser-known European Mix (closer in style to Italo-disco, though actually made by a Belgian). Arguably even better is flipside "Jamaica Running", where glistening melodies cluster themselves around a proto-dancehall rhythm, and its' stoned, pitched-down alternative mix, "Jamaica Resting".

Review: Irishman Peter Power has become quite a well known figure in Berlin since moving there several years ago and has been one of the figures behind some of the city's now legendary haunts like Kleine Reise (RIP) and the successful Loftus Hall/Bertrams: which has had a great run thus far too. Now the man behind the Ufordia imprint returns with his second outing on Thomas Von Party's Multi Culti, which itself has also made the move to the German capital. Power delves deep into the exotic here, borrowing heavily from African music and getting very atmospheric and esoteric in the process. The life affirming raindance of "Adama Waro" (original mix) is certainly geared for some moments of truth on the dancefloor. Equally spiritual is the traditional percussion based journey of "Mori Baka" (original mix). There's some great remixes by label manager Dreems and Bucharest duo Khidja: the latter's contributions which shine the most, particularly on their balearica infused/Second Summer of Love sounding remix of "Dansakoni".

  1. A Safe & Happy Place (extended Disco 12" version) (7:32)
  2. A Safe & Happy Beat (5:37)
Review: When it comes to muscular, basement-ready slabs of Italo-disco, proto-house and sweaty disco nostalgia, you can't beat Luke Solomon and Nick Maurer's Powerdance series. For slab number four, they've slightly changed the blueprint, delivering a woozy, smile-inducing fusion of baggy vocals, Balearic disco shuffle and blue-eyed soul attitude. The A-side "A Safe & Happy Place (Extended Disco Mix)" is the one for sunshine sets and happy-go-lucky parties, while the flipside "A Safe & Happy Beat" veers back towards their usual mind-altering antics. A breathless dub that utilizes only short snippets of the original, it owes much of its power to sweaty drum machine hits and wild, undulating acid lines.

  1. Song For You (PPA rework) (3:55)
  2. Green Machine (PPA rework) (4:17)
Review: We were blown away by Prescription Pricing Authority's first jazz-funk and Latin-fuelled 7" on GAMM, so hopes are sky-high for this speedy follow-up. On the A-side the London twosome get busy with the soulful sunshine that is Florida outfit Popcorn's exceedingly hard-to-find "Song For You", which sounds like the sort of breezy and loved-up gem you'd like to take home to meet your mother. Turn to the flip for some tougher dancefloor business: a jaunty, tight, on-point and slightly dubbed-out rearrangement of O'Donel Levy's synth-laden 1976 jazz-funk smasher "Green Machine". We're not sure exactly who the Prescription Pricing Authority boys (or girls) are, but they've certainly got digging and editing skills.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: With the Grupo Almendra album fresh out of the gates, Italian label Best Records jump right back in with a crucial slice of disco funk from noted arranger, producer and karate expert Pino Presti. "You Know The Way" is a slinky party starter with on-point slap bass, lively brass and sumptuous Philly strings of the highest order. As if the original wasn't funky enough, the B-side features a disco remix from dearly departed New York disco legend Tee Scott, who subtly buffs up the dancefloor potential of the track to devastating effect.

  1. To Africa/Soul Makossa (4:47)
  2. Ain't No Sunshine (2:18)
  3. I Call Your Name/Come Back To Me (2:07)
Review: The latest dig from Best Record Italy's eternal mission to release the finest Roman musical manna features noted jazz man Pino Presti taking on Manu Dibango's eternal party jam "Soul Makossa". Presti's interpretation uses oodles of gleaming 80s synths in place of the original traditional instrumentation, but fear not as the iconic brass section remains a real-world force, and sounds mighty fresh with it. Following up that cover is a sumptuous version of "Ain't No Sunshine" which is aimed square at the heartstrings of the most Balearic cruisers. "I Call Your Name / Come Back To Me" gets even smoother, the vocals capturing Mediterranean getaway romance to perfection.

Cat: BST X027. Rel: 05 Mar 18
  1. You Know Why (Disco version)
  2. Nice & Easy/Hungry For Love (Disco version)
  3. Come On (Disco version)
Review: Best Records previously mined Pino Presti's illustrious back catalogue for the To Africa / Soul Makossa, You Know The Way and Funky Bump 12"s, and they're back with the Italian arranger's finest disco delicacies straight outta 1977. "You Know Why" is a swooning, romantic groover featuring the sultry vocals of Roxy Robinson. "Nice & Easy / Hungry For Love" is a bold, dramatic cut with striking brass stabs and a slinky bassline that wraps itself around Robinson's classic vocal. "Come On" is a deeper, Philly string laden affair of the heart, rounding out this most passionate of disco 12"s.

Review: Another royal re-edit by the one and only KON, here we find him going to town on 1974 soul classic from Pat Tandy's The Pretenders. Flipping the arrangement so each section gets a chance to shine (notably the raffish walking bassline and sweeping strings) the lead remix pays full respect to the original while giving it a completely fresh new life. Complete with the extended original for the more purest fans, KON's delivered gold once again.

  1. Eternal (US club mix)
  2. Prisoner To Desire (Alcatraz mix)
  3. Unveiling The Secret (exclusive re-edit)
  4. Ecstasy (Joseph Watt extended mix)
Review: Emotional Rescue make no attempt to hide their love of classic 80s cutters Razormaid's remixes, and on this occasion they're shining a light on the pumped up dancefloor versions of cult Canadian synthwave concern Psyche. The "US Club Mix" of "Eternal" is a perfect, swooning synth pop belter with weight in all the right places to work on the floor. "Prisoner To Desire (Alcatraz Mix)" is a snarling stomper that almost touches on acidic synth lines underneath the impassioned vocals, and then an exclusive re-edit of "Unveiling The Secret" ups the tempo while letting the catchy pop edge to Psyche's sound shine through. The record finishes with the fevered intensity of Joseph Watt's extended mix of "Ecstasy".

Review: ** Reissue of the Psychemagik Wang Chung classic ** If you've been following the rise of Cosmic Forest dwellers Psychemagik for more than a minute, you'll be aware of their extremely chunky revision of Wang Chung's 1984 jam "Dancehall Days" which has been teasing new arrivals at their Soundcloud page for more than a year now. It finally gets a vinyl release here, and an official one to boot as Wang Chung vocalist Jack Hues was so impressed with their illicit take he sent them the stems for the official remix you see here. It's very much in line with their original edit but comes replete with that extra beef and on a neat white twelve inch. Another archival killer from the duo in "Beauty And The Bass" lines the flip too.

  1. The Trip (7:24)
  2. Sisters Of The Moon (6:44)
Review: It's been a while since celebrated crate diggers-turned-re-editors Psychemagik treated us to some sublime scalpel works. Predictably, the two edits showcased here - both of little-known tracks discovered during their dusty-fingered digging missions around the world - are both top notch. A-side "The Trip" is a fine chunk of psychedelic-era druid funk - a veritable pagan ritual full of acid-fried, floor-friendly rock grooves, hallucinogenic flourishes and hazy, hug-a-stranger chorus vocals. Flip for "Sisters of the Moon", a drowsy, loved-up and thoroughly eccentric slice of slow bliss smothered in wavy synths, lilting steel guitar and sumptuous orchestration. It's great to have them back.

  2. Red Ken - "Big Love" (Big Four Letter Word mix) (6:17)
Review: Psychemagik love Fleetwood Mac. Their love is so enduring that the dusty fingered editors/DJs/revered record collectors have gone so far as to found Fleetmac Wood, a club night dedicated to the work of Fleetwood, Nicks, McVie and the various other manifestations, where anything goes so long as it's Fleetwood Mac related. Their remix of "Dreams" has been getting playtime at the night - and by other well regarded DJs - and finally makes an appearance on this limited 12". What's immediately noticeable about the Crystal Visions Remix of "Dreams" is how much they add to the track without messing with the original's essence - it's also a lot more inventive than Psychemagik's 2009 edit of "Everywhere" which shows how far they've come in three years. Flip over for a great extension of Juno's favourite Mac moment "Big Love" from AOR Disco's Red Ken.

  2. Midnight Mirrors (5:07)
Review: Having come to the fore with a pair of boogie slammers on the Cosmic Chronic label, Mickey De Grand IV's Psychic Mirrors outfit ascend to parent operation People's Potential Unlimited with the excellent Charlene. Allegedly recorded with the help of a ten piece live band, both the title track and "Midnight Mirrors" are evocative of the sort of modern lo-fi funk that PPU corners the market in these days. Bringing the Miami heat, "Charlene" is a veritable dancefloor bomb, with a rugged boogie bassline the sort of flirtatious element that hips can't say no to. B Side cut "Midnight Mirrors" is more of a late night number with some exquisite synth work. Props to PPU!

Review: Tino Piontek aka Purple Disco Machine is the man behind the anthems "My House", "Devil In Me" and more recently "Love For Days" with Boris Dlugosch. The Dresden native's next dancefloor bomb is "Dished" (Male Stripper) for Australian imprint Club Sweat. This mash-up of Man Parrish and Ellis D is a roaring and neon-lit disco inferno that's sure to burn up a dancefloor near you soon. 3. Devil In Me (Fatboy Slim remix) (5:38)
Review: Leipzig based Purple Disco Machine is up next on Australian dance-pop label Sweat It Out: carrying on the legacy of the beloved and legendary DJ Ajax who passed away back in 2014. Real name Tino Piontek, he's had a successful run of releases: appearing everywhere from OFF to Nurvous and even main room specialists Defected. Featuring the fine vocal talents of the one and only Duane Harden (who appeared on such classics as "You Don't Know Me" by Armand Van Helden) and Joe Killington of The Funktuary. An unholy mixture of bluesy country-inflected '70s rock and funky house. And let's not ignore the elephant in the room here: yes there is an absolutely jumping remix by UK big beat hero Fatboy Slim: and he's in top form as always with his party starting rendition.

  2. Love For Days (PDM extended mix) (5:20)
  3. Love For Days (Motez remix) (5:34)
Review: Given the serious disco-house credentials of '90s survivor Boris Dlugosch and contemporary nu-disco chops of hyped outfit Purple Disco Machine, you'd expect "Love For Days" to be pretty darn hot. It is, of course, with Purple Disco Machine's extended mix - nestled on the B-side - offering the perfect mixture of strong diva vocals (provided by Karen Harding), sweeping disco orchestration and modern disco-house trickery. Arguably the best version, though, comes from Masters at Work legend Kenny Dope, whose fluid rework utilizes looser, live-sounding percussion, far more orchestration and all manner of original disco-era references. Motez completely flips the script on B2, serving up a skipping, Champagne sipping version that brilliantly joins the dots between disco and two-step UK garage.

Review: Like all the best releases on Best, Pussycat were something of a one hit wonder who appeared and then promptly disappeared after one single in 1983. It's a wicked shame, seeing as their track "Le Chat" was a wonderful fusion of disco funk and synth pop. The vocal is catchy enough, but the "Short Dub" version is where the real heat is to be found - this isn't over the top delay wielding but rather a subtle approach that brings the strongest elements to the foreground. The "instrumental" takes you on a smoother ride, but those who want a bit more spice in their selection will be clamouring for that dub.

On the A-side you'll find the rising strings, rich orchestration and celebratory vocals of "Let's Go All The Way", a guitar solo-laden disco bumper tailor made for party-starting fun. Arguably even better is "Just Be Yourself", a high-octane disco thumper that's a little more loopy and house-friendly in construction. It sits somewhere between the thumping loop jams of Soundstream, the riotously camp thrust of Sylvester, and the "drum machine added" edit thrills of Boogie Cafe boss man Jimmy The Twin.

Review: This surprise single from boogie band Qwestlife has a lot going for it. For starters, it's a fabulously catchy song, with the kind of chorus that you'll find yourself singing in the shower for days to come. Coupled with the boogie-era authenticity of the instrumentation (think D'Train synth squiggles, cowbells, heavy synth bass, and so on) and production, it's an almost perfect chunk of electrofunk revivalism that steers clear of "hollow tribute" territory. Happily, the alternative mixes - particularly the "Dubbed Out Version" - are also in keeping with the band's early '80s New York inspirations. In fact, both that mix and the tidy "Bonus Beats" versions sound like they could have been the work of original boogie-dub maestros Paul Simpson (Serious Intention) and Winston Jones (Pushe); we can't think of much higher praise than that.
