Cat: SCR 012. Rel: 28 Jul 14
  1. The Noodleman - "That Word Again"
  2. Sleazy McQueen - "Take It Ez"
  3. Osmose - "I Was"
Review: Slo-mo, steamy and sexy... Those three words could sum up pretty much every excellent Smokecloud release, but these three tracks are purpose built for the more sensual sessions you might wish to soundtrack. Each one purrs with low-end sultriness while shimmering with all the disco motifs we've come to expect from such a discerning label. Noodleman's "That Word Again" finds inspiration in the German quarters, Sleazy McQueen devilishly teases us with vocal fractures buried deep under a throbbing bass groove and finally Osmose brings us to the most hypnotic close possible with a bed of dubbed out percussion and otherworldly loops that build and twist. Ready for bed yet?

  1. Evil Eye ( (Todd Terje extended mix)
  2. Stand On The Horizon (Todd Terje extended mix)
Review: A collaboration between Franz Ferdinand and Todd Terje? Not the most obvious of partnerships, but it certainly works. Franz Ferdinand's post-punk tendencies get extended and polished with Nordic cosmic charm and the result are two timeless, dubbed out exercises in deep funk. "Evil Eye" looks up to the sky with euphoric stomps and wistful synth licks while "Stand On The Horizon" cuts loose with more of an angular swagger. A really interesting departure for Franz Ferdinand, Todd Terje and Domino.

  1. For The Love Of Money (7:21)
  2. Darlin' Darlin' Baby (Sweet, Tender, Love) (4:18)
Review: Originally released in 1974, "For the Love of Money" is a soul/funk song that was recorded by Philadelphia soul group The O'Jays for the album Ship Ahoy. The lineup at the time comprised of Eddie Levert, William Powell and Walter Williams, It was written and composed by Anthony Jackson, Leon Huff & Kenneth Gamble, and produced on the latter's Philadelphia International Records. The original pressing was issued as a single in late 1973 with "People Keep Tellin' Me" as its B-side. The single peaked at number three on the U.S. Billboard R&B chart, and at No. 9 on Billboard's Pop Singles chart in spring 1974. "For the Love of Money" made the group Grammy Hall of Fame Inductees in 2016.

  1. Candies (5:57)
  2. Stay (6:23)
Review: Masterworks Music returns with The Masters Series: their illustrious 10" vinyl-only brand. On this fourth instalment is some 'cracking' tackle for any modern disco head... sure to blaze up the night!' courtesy of Obas Nenor. The Tel Aviv based producer has appeared previously on Defected, Heist Recordings Strictly Rhythm, Mahogany Music and his own label, Nenorian. Now unleashing his 'weirdo disco' style where he packs his studio creations within a tidy, 10" format on a double-header with "Candies" on the A-side: which is a cheeky little boogie down jam on the deeper tip. Has more cowbells and vocoders than you can shake a Telex record at. Holding down the B-side is the well funky "Stay" with its chunky Moog bassline leading a tight, sun-kissed groove that will be sure to get any serious Disco Stu working up a sweat on the dancefloor in no time.

  3. Rushing Through My Mind (Mang Dynasty radio edit) (3:56)
Review: Ray Mang's slick disco stable Mangled calls upon a new pair of provocateurs to lay down a sun-kissed steamer to blow away those winter blues. The agents in question are Josefin Ohrn and The Liberation, and their "Mang Dynasty" is every inch the Balearic idyll rendered in a long form discoid jam. The extended version on the A side fully floats out into gently psychedelic waters guided by Ohrn's infectious hook, "I've got you rushing through my mind." For those who just want the groove there's the instrumental mix available as well, or you can always plump for the radio edit if time is short.

  1. Bye (6:55)
  2. High Hopes (7:09)
  3. Back & Forth (7:26)
Review: Omer joins the Love On The Rocks family with a massive underground smash. There's the secret rework with its hands in the air hysteria that's clocked up more than a few plays in clubs from Robert Johnson to Panorama Bar. Finding just enough room for another huge jam to share on the same side, Omer moves effortlessly into late night melancholic territory with "High Hopes" leading in with snapping percussion before giving way to a fierce bassline, swirling layers of melody and synths that resonate with warmth and emotion. Rounding out proceedings is "Back and Forth" which pulses with electric energy; quickly pulling you into its distinctly neon/after dark atmospherics. With a foreboding hook that twists around itself amid spiralling tension and on into euphoria.

  4. Momoshima (6:13)
Review: Late last year, French imprint Chuwanag launched via a fine compilation exploring the early '80s Britfunk sound (think jazz-funk and electrofunk) in impressive detail. You'll find numerous aural nods to that style on this follow-up, a fine debut single from producer Koji Ono. Check, for example, the sparkling synthesizers, hustling guitars and house-tempo jazz-funk grooves of "So High", the wiggly Clavinet lines, whistling melodies and rubbery bass of "Inner Rhythms" and the luscious, misty-eyed warmth of ear-pleasing mid-tempo instrumental jam "Momoshima". All are exquisite examples of revivalist cuts that boast more than enough freshness and impeccable instrumentation to bear comparison to the records that inspired them.

  1. Onward Intenational - "Foot In The Door" (Alex & Stephane Attias edit) (7:36)
  2. Elbernita Twinkie Clark - "Awake O Zion" (Alex Attias edit) (8:18)
Review: Since launching in the summer of 2017, Alex Attias' edit-focused LillyGood Party label has consistently delivered the goods. It helps that Attias' approach to re-editing mirrors original scalpel legends like Danny Krivit - think killer rearrangements with no cheap production trickery - but this would mean nothing if the selected material was below-par. This time round he's on a Latin-tinged jazz-funk and disco tip, first teaming up with brother Stephane to deliver a superb, horn-heavy rework of Onward International's 1985 all-dayer slayer "Foot in the Door". It's a righteous and funk-fuelled affair guaranteed to bring a dose of sultry sunshine to any party. On the flip, Attias goes solo to lovingly extend Elbertina "Twinkie" Clark's 1981 gospel-fuelled disco-soul treat "Awake O Zion", with predictably fine results.

  1. Dorian (Jimmy Rouge edit) (6:39)
  2. Clock (Jimmy Rouge edit) (6:57)
Review: On Orange Tree Edits' previously releases, label honcho Jimmy Rouge and his merry band of scalpel fiends largely focused on reworking old African records. This time round, Rouge has decided to switch focus, serving up two tasty re-interpretations of what sound like Japanese tracks. A-side "Dorian" is arguably the pick of the pair for peak-time plays, with Rouge teasing out a simmering disco cut before ratcheting up the intensity via rock solid drum machine beats and a mind-altering TB-303 acid line. On the flip, he gets busy with a Rhodes-heavy jazz-funk workout, slyly adding and removing beefy new beats whilst retaining much of the languid original instrumentation.

  2. Yeah Yeah (Jimmy Rouge edit) (6:35)
Review: The clue is in the title... OTE step up with two sparkling afro diamonds right here. Two of the coolest sides of the vibe coin, too: "Back To Kingston" is a carnival meltdown-in-waiting. Acidic, stamping, scorched with horn drama and gutsy vocals, this will absolutely shatter floors this summer. The label's own Jimmy Rogue maintains the heat with a much deeper, understated funk build on "Yeah Yeah", but when that acid and those horns riff back in.... Oh boy.

Sexy Lady/Stop The War (12" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: BST X038. Rel: 23 Jul 18
  1. Sexy Lady
  2. Stop The War
Review: It's coming out on Best Italy, so you know you're in for a rarified treat from the dusty archives of pan European music. On this occasion the unstoppable reissue label has its disco hat on, serving up the "raw cosmic funk" of Oro, recorded in Naples and originally released in 1977. Back then, this crucial cut was confined to a short 7" edit, but Best have pulled the stops out to track down the master tapes and execute a thorough remastering job on the full-length versions, now pressed to 12" for your long-playing, disc-spinning pleasure. It's a good thing these tracks came back into circulation - they capture the best of the late 70s era in a cool, downright funky style that never gets old.

Review: We're not sure who's behind these extended Turkish funk and psychedelic pieces but we're glad they've come into our lives. Heavily dubbed and spaced out, each cut casts a heady spell; "Aycicegi" is a low-riding, loose-stringed sleazy funk slice, "Biz Burdayiz" is a nodding cosmic slop of chugging beats, strange acid melts and breathy voice clips while "Gunesi Kesin" closes the show on the slinkiest walking bassline imaginable. Looking forward to the second volume....

Review: Some people like to Netflix and chill, Osmose prefers to "Cook & Chill". From a classically trained selector we'd expect nothing less... "Get It Straight" is the spicy starter, steamed with big soul emotion and orchestration and very familiar voices. "Disco Pagen Fantasy" is a meaty main course. Unhurried and hearty, the flavours really kick in as the swooning strings mark the development of the loop-heavy downbeat groove. Finally for pudding we're sent to bed satisfied and satiated with a lovingly languished citrus slo-mo jam. Delicious.

  3. Osmose - "I Don't Wanna Know" (6:16)
Review: Aside from being the originator and creator of the Osmose Sound 7" Vinyl Record Stabiliser, DJ Osmose is a purveyor of the finest house and disco concoctions, a man who has clearly dedicated his life to both house culture and the vinyl format - we dig. This time he's up on the newly crowned Morgan Avenue Edits, and first up is a collaboration with byDesign, a track entitled "Red Light Disco", and one that is a total discoid banger, backed by one hell of a baseline. "Hazardous Disco" sees the man go solo and deeper than before, serving up a beautiful, vocal-laden, string-heavy disco joint for the modern ear, followed by the smooth-as-silk groove of "I Don't Wanna Know". Stunningly fab.

  4. Osmose - "Stone Dance" (6:05)
Review: Since first appearing back in 2011, DJ Osmose's Smokecloud Records has developed into one of the more reliable sources of pitched down, dubbed-out disco reworks. The label's Bedroom Disco series - so called, we suspect, because the edits tend towards the seductive and sensual - launched in 2014, and here returns for the first time since. There's much to admire, from the beatdown disco shuffle of Osmose's "Solid Game" and the rubbery, slo-mo disco-funk shuffle of The Silver Rider's hypnotic "Luv Ur Lyfe", and Osmose's delay and filter heavy AOR disco re-shape, "Stone Dance". Best of all, though, is Osmose's remix of King Most's "Fiesta Forever", a deliciously Balearic, glassy-eyed re-imagining of Lionel Richie's "All Night Long".

  4. The Funk District - "A Gangster Film" (5:55)
Review: Beatdown disco rework specialists Smokecloud have assembled a crack team of troops for their latest salvo into no-man's-land. Leading the charge and lobbing the first "Disco Grenade" is label chief Osmose, who contributes two tight cuts: loopy, filter-sporting disco chugger "Disco Luv" - a study in ear-pleasing, head-nodding hypnotism rich in musical positivity - and the more up-beat disco-funk thrust of flipside opener "U Promised Me", which sees him make merry with a cheery AOR disco favourite. Elsewhere, Oldchap delivers the obligatory slo-mo disco flier - think 98BPM beats, rising backing vocals, disco-rock grooves and jaunty Rhodes stabs - while The Funk District's "A Gangster Film" is a Blaxploitation-inspired bouncy disco-house treat.

  4. Hristo - "Love Me" (5:07)
Review: More Beatdown business from vinyl-only warriors Smokecloud. Osmose steps forward with the first half; "Help Me DISCOver" is a sample-savvy filtered enlightener while his edit of the Silver Rider goes for a much heavier, floor-pounding sense of insistency. Flip for twists from JP Source and Hristo. The former gets busy on a densely textured and tightly plucked guitar line while the latter takes us right down into sleazy town with an Isaac Hayes level of gravelly vocals and a sweaty guitar and organ pumped groove.

Review: From the tropics comes Whiskey Disco, a sneaky re-edit label bent on dredging the decanter for diffident dancefloor genius from latent disco perpetrators. It's loosely connected to Sleazy McQueen and his assorted cohorts. On the A side we have the one and only Osmose: DJ, digger, sound designer & producer but most of all: the originator of the Osmose Sound 7" Vinyl Record Stabilizer. He throws down some late night, deep down boogie business (on the very soulful tip) for the A side. On the flip, Thoma Cher makes his debut with some neon lit 80s disco vibes on "All You Need" while "Fright Night" is more on the Italo angle.

Review: Most of the releases on Imogen Recordings to date have been from label boss Ilija Rudman, but this time around the disco house operation is turning to a relatively fresh proposition - Ourra. The alias of one Simon Tappenden, This Time is the first dedicated release for Ourra and he comes out swinging with the sultry slap-bass inflected title track boosted by a classic vocal turn from Robert Owens. Rudman meanwhile weighs in heavy with no less than three remixes of the track on the B side, with the "Radiophonic Mix" standing out thanks to its stripped down effectiveness.

"Lazarus" is a sprightly piece of Farina-level jazzy magic with persistent keys and subtle dub effects, "Mostly You" ups the jack factor with layers of hypnotic rippling washes and "Flamboyant" dims the lights with a sultry, loopy groove and the perfect balance of cosmic flare. Review: It's been some two years since Pacific Horizons last cast their spell on us with some original material, though Pacific Wizard Foundation did seek out a diverse range of contemporaries to delve into their discography for last year's self-explanatory Remix EP. The Balearic gods have answered the calls and ushered in a fresh batch of Pacific Horizons goodness to broaden your own mental horizons. Still wonderfully diverse in their outlook, the three tracks on Loneliness Destroys range from the ragged yet pensive box jam work out of "When The Shades Open" to the downbeat wave "The Loneliness Your Love Destroys" which inspired the record's title. Closer "Into The Night" veers off into twilight Balearic ballad territory.

Painel De Controle begins with a Waxist mix of "Relax", a chilled-out boogie monster with sultry vocals, while "Ripa Na Xulipa" by Rabo De Saia is more uplifting and heavy on the disco strings. Finally, Nick The Record rewires "Labirinto" by Famks into a subtly electro-fied boogie nugget. Nice!

  1. True To Yourself
  2. Born With A Desire
  3. Hoping For A Better World
Review: Having last drawn on more contemporary fare with that killer 12" from Mood Hut artists Pender Street Steppers, PPU focus their attentions on music of a more archival nature with this triplet of productions from Tony Palkovic. Drawing from the 1985 album Born With A Desire the Los Angeles -based multi-instrumentalist issued via the Deep Water label, True To Yourself is a richly rewarding display of Palkovic's talents. The title cut alone is worth investigating, delving deep into the realm of synthesized jazz fusion across ten sumptuous minutes. "Born With A Desire" is prime PPU synth boogie whilst "Hoping For A Better World" is as contemplative as the title suggests. Up next for PPU is Legowelt - don't sleep!
