  1. Share Of Thee Grail (Mugwump & DC Salas edit)
  2. Satori Crossroads
  3. Heels (Mugwump instrumental remix)
Review: Belgian producer Geoffroy has enjoyed a pleasingly eclectic career to date, utilizing the Mugwump moniker to release everything from shimmering slo-mo nu-disco (the ubiquitous "Boutade") and pulsating techno (a fierce double A-side on R&S), to jackin' electro-house (early forays on Suicide) and space disco (an outing on Endless Flight). Here he turns up on US imprint Subfield with a trio of unusual tracks. All three come loaded with wavey vintage synths, the midtempo pulse of new beat, the alien electronics of new wave, and the breezy shuffle of nu-disco. The results - particularly the guitar-flecked Balearic chug of "Satori Crossroads" - are rarely less than excellent.

  1. Until You're Worth It (original version)
  2. Until You're Worth It (Mark E remix 1)
  3. Until You're Worth It (Andrew Weatherall remix)
Review: With Norwegian eccentrics Mungolian Jetset and Ost & Kjex involved, you'd expect "Until You're Worth It" - Belgian duo Mugwump's latest genre-swerving offering - to be a little on the quirky side. As expected, it is, though it's a far more polished, tactile and organic sounding cut than you may be expecting. Sparse, low-slung, warm and dubby, it features the Norwegian contingent singing over a wide-eyed, dubbed-out Balearic pop groove. It's great, as is Mark E's bubbling, heavily electronic remake. Best of all, though, is Andrew Weatherall's revision, which recasts the original as a heavyweight chunk of pitched-down, punk-funk influenced dub disco.

  1. Could Heaven Ever Be Like This (Late Nite Tuff Guy remix) (7:33)
  2. Could Heaven Ever Be Like This (8:36)
Review: There's no doubting that Idris Muhammad's "Could Heaven Ever Be Like This" is a stone-cold classic; a sparkling, heavenly chunk of dreamy, disco-era jazz-funk that's capable of reducing grown men and women to tears when played at the right time. Some could argue that it's so good that it shouldn't be tampered with. Late Nite Tuff Guy, a producer who previous for reworking classic cuts, clearly disagrees, because he's delivered a fresh 2018 revision. His version is actually rather reverential, subtly beefing up the bottom end to provide a little more a rolling disco feel while adding some easy-to-mix beats at the beginning. Otherwise, he's made use of all the key original instrumentation and should be applauded for his tasteful efforts.

Bahamas Tropical Funk vs Ivory Coast Afro Funk (7" in exclusive hand-stamped kraft paper inner sleeve + branded outer sleeve + sticker)
Cat: MUKAT 053. Rel: 30 Oct 17
  1. Biosis Now - "Independent Bahamas" (Nik's Exclusive Mukatsuku edit) (3:30)
  2. Afro Train - "Tumba Safari" (Nik's Exclusive Mukatsuku re-edit) (3:28)
Review: This tasty 7" from the reliable Mukatsuku label sees 2 killer funk treats for the dancefloor. On the A-side there's a handy and exclusive re-edit of Bahamian combo Biosis Now's ludicrously rare "Independent Bahamas", a righteous call for self-governance backed with a wonderfully fuzzy and full-throttle tropical funk groove. A copy recently for $700 on ebay for the very first time of the original 45. On the flipside we find "Tumba Safari" taken from the recent Oriki compilation, a suitably heavy chunk of Ivory Coast afro-funk from long forgotten outfit Afro Train. Weston's version naturally emphasizes the drum breaks, heavy horns and razor-sharp guitars, in the process tightening it up for contemporary club play.As played by Hunee,Red Greg ,DJ Logic and Nicola Conte

Review: Shimmering slow-mo soul from Berlin's Luca Musto. Smoky, unhurried and loaded with delicate emotion, it's another Balearic motherload as we're plunged into foggy trumpets and jazzy swirls on "Let Me Down", immersed in whirling reverse tones and dusty Bonoboesque haziness on "Once Upon A Grind" and taken on a bluesy one-way trip to Norway on "Parabel". Loire's deep chug remix seals the deal. Stunning.

  3. Track 3 (5:30)
Review: Someone put the mute on the info button here because nothing is known about the source or editor at all here. But the music's more than strong enough to do the talking. Balearic soul and international disco through and through, track one rattles with a little Afrofunk energy, track two has more of a Latin sunset feel while the final track is a swooning, mooning sweep into crazy town with some strong psychedelic textures. Spacy, singular and special: You won't want to mute these for a long time.

  7. The Sun (Mooph 8-bit Cover) (3:31)
Review: Myd made his name a few years back by delivering a string of dancefloor hits that joined the dots between African rhythms, techno, electro and humid tropical instrumentation. All Inclusive, which appears on luscious transparent blue vinyl, is not only his first single for Ed Banger, but also a far more hazy, sun-kissed and pop-centric affair. In essence, the three original tracks - "The Sun", "Bingo" and "All Inclusive" - are breezy and louche affairs, mixing the producer's own drowsy vocals and gentle rhythms, tropical guitars and loved-up electronics. More club-ready reworks can be found on the flip, where Cassius stick a gargantuan bassline and UK steppers-inspired house drums beneath "Bingo" and Canblaster re-cast "All Inclusive" as a bouncy tropical house anthem.

  5. Czary Mary (5:34)
Review: Having set out their stall via a fine first collaborative release on Bordello a Parigi a couple of months back, Mytron and Ofofo pitch up on Multi-Culti. As you'd expect from a label with such a strong track record of multi-cultural musical fusion, much of the EP defies easy categorization. Sure, you'll find a chunk of Italo-influenced electro ("Non-Binary Joys on the Venus Holodeck") and a couple of slabs of madcap disco-funk fusion ("Si Jambo" and "2Tac Onana"), but also a heavyweight slab of low-slung punk-funk/post disco ("Czary Mary"). Oh, and the skewed electro-funk-meets-intergalactic synth pop insanity of "Something for Your Mind", which also boasts some notably brain-melting vocoder action. More, please!

Review: NYC-based Japanese groove guru Takuya returns with two alluring, highly cosmic funkers and a whole stash of dope remixes. "Spacetak" lives up to its name in every possible way. Big juicy synths that flap and fold over a nicely slouched groove; this will aid and abet many people looking to lose their minds this summer. "Sun" is also fittingly titled thanks to its premium vibrancy and latent feels (not to mention a wry bit of slap bass) Remix-wise Tronik Youth get all dubbed out on "Spacetak" while Jonny Sender whips us back to early 2000s City Rockers vibes with some superb use of the trumpet elements. Talk time is over.

  1. Natasha Kitty Katt & Twisted Soul Collective - "Twisted Katt" (7:15)
  2. Natasha Kitty Katt - "Cosmic Bitch" (7:17)
Review: Edinburgh's Ghetto Disco Records are back with their second release, a label run by Natasha Kitty Katt and her father. When two creative minds join and bring a modern take on disco, this is the result. Kitty Katt & Twisted Soul Collective 'have aligned forces to bring you an array of ideas, thoughts, sounds and feelings.' Definitely for the disco dancers, you can visualise grooving to this number under a mirror ball. "Twisted Katt" on the A side brings the funk, complete with liquid bassline and breakbeats (hear the drummer get wicked) assisted by a tough four the floor beat for dancefloor dynamics. On the flip is "Cosmic Bitch" with its Salsoul Orchestra style strings section looped up to perfection, over another reliable house rhythm and some nice filter sweeps.

Review: Given the runaway success of the recent reissue of DJ Nature's 1993 gem Necessary Ruffness Volume 1 - an early outing under the alternative Nature Boy alias that has long been regarded as a British deep house classic - it was inevitable that Volume Two would quickly follow. Like its predecessor, the EP is something of a cut-and-paste deep house treat, with the former Wild Bunch member wrapping vocal samples from classic disco, boogie and jazz-funk tunes around chunky, bass-heavy grooves. We're particularly enjoying the rolling late night pressure of "On Your Side", with its relentless bassline and fluttering Mystic Merlin samples, and the Dream II Science smoothness of "Relax Man", though the more disco-fired bounce of "Whatchusay (dubwize)" may well be the premier peak-time treat.

Review: Nebraska fires up his own Friends & Relations label once again to take a trip into the strain of lilting, summery deep house that has previously fitted in so well on Rush Hour, Mister Saturday Night and more. This time around Nebraska is getting the remix treatment from an all star cast, leading in with the woozy, soul-soaked shuffle of Session Victim's treatment of "Pintxos." Mr Beatnick keeps things suitably deep when tackling "Rat Boogie," all laid back disco patter and filtered funk, before Marcel Vogel goes one step further on "Keep What Ya Got" and rolls out slow and juicy funk of the raunchiest kind.

Joey NEGRO presents RWL
Circles (12")
Cat: DAYS 023. Rel: 23 Feb 18
  1. Circles (Joey Negro extended Disco mix) (8:12)
  2. Everybody Dance (Joey Negro Revibe) (6:03)
Review: This tasty 12" serves as a kind of vinyl appendix to Joey Negro's Remixed With Love albums. It contains two more tracks re-built from the original studio multi-track tapes. Perhaps the headline attraction is the flipside "re-vibe" of Chic's "Everybody Dance", which the veteran British producer turns into a joyous chunk of dub disco full of echoing effects, Reflex style instrumental breakdowns and Idjuts-esque beats. Arguably even better, though, is his A-side version of Atlantic Starr's "Circles", a Southport Weekender favourite that the Z Records boss has turned into a life-affirming, string-drenched disco epic. It has great sing-along potential when played at the right time, to the right crowd.

  2. Red Light Green Light (instrumental) (4:06)
Review: The Super Disco Edits camp have pulled off something of a coup here, securing the rights to a previously unissued 1987 cut from studio duo New Jersey Connection, whose sole 1981 single, "Love Don't Come Easy", has long been a favourite of boogie DJs. "Red Light Green Light", featuring the breezy vocals of Cynthia Wilson, sounds like a long lost boogie classic: all sugary-sweet backing vocals, rubbery bass guitar, twinkling '80s soul synthesizer melodies and punchy drum machine percussion. The A-side vocal version is accompanied by a tasty instrumental mix, in which the focus switches to the NJ twosome's superb production. File under: "must have".

Review: The Chordz EP brings it with 3 hot new modern Boogie tracks.

Label Hero Newman opens the release with the title track 'Chordz' - a synth-fuelled dancefloor banger, reminiscent of Harvey Sutherland's recent work. Flip it over and Ourra (aka Simon Tappenden aka 'Pop Out N Play') brings us a truly Tropical treat reminiscent of Palm Trees, Pina Coladas and 80's Miami sunsets. Last but not least, Keyboardist for Brian Ellis, Adam Chini plays 'Horizons of Funk'... a lush down tempo synth funk number bringing the EP to the perfect close.

Review: House Is the Cure dip their toes in classy disco waters, rounding up a quartet of acts who've done right in 2010 and look set to do righter next year. Italian tweaker Nicholas has been oh so prolific this year, leading the Latin edit charge with his No More Hits imprint and he contributes a rasping edit of one of disco's greatest afro haircuts. Changing the beat up, rising talents Deep Space Orchestra plough a similar path to those infamous Soul Clap edits on "Dollar" with a sultry low end heavy R&B refix that bristles with atmospheric intent. On the flip Ali OOFT drops some late night vibes on a classy take on Dexter Wansel's "The Sweetest Pain" that includes some dizzying vocal edits whilst Dead Rose Music Company round off this slick clear vinyl release with the ethereal orchestral soul bump of "The World Is An Uproar".

Review: Pumping disco funk from decorated digger Nick The Record. "Lifeforce Theme" pays homage to the Japanese party collective he's been with since the early 90s (and played at Japan's first ever outdoor rave with, no less) Loose and rugged but primed with a lavish sense of piano luxury, there's a deep drive and firm uplift that instantly grabs attention. "Recordnition" is a much more heads-down in its nature and focus as we're pulled in by the hypnotic percussion, worming wah wahs and sharp blasts of flutes. As always with Nick, the floor is the foremost focus.

Review: Father & Son Records And Tapes have already had a strong 2016 with releases from Naphta, DJ Sajko and Das Komplex, and now the Polish label rounds off the year with a stunning album of style-spanning wares from Niemoc. Paramaribo is the first physical release for the emergent artist, and it sports all manner of instrumentation feeding into a wholesome, heartwarming whole. There's a danceable pulse propelling these tracks, and the likes of "Lustro" head more overtly into club territory, but by and large this is an album of plaintive melodics to tug at the heart as much as the feet.

The list of worlds this groundbreaking song traversed is remarkable. Here Dark Entries compile the four versions that were cut during its two key release phases on GC Recordings in 1981 and 1983 in all their remastered glory. Smouldering, moody and still relevant to so much going on musically, this is true piece of history.

"I Saw You" sits somewhere between Prince and Rick James but polished with super freaky female front vocals, it's wholly unique and backs up the first pressing's pricetag of $500. "Heaven's Love" is the perfect counter with its emphatic harmonies and stately instrumentation. A serious timepiece from AOTN.
