MIC
Cat: MIC 003. Rel: 30 May 18
  1. Shyne Eyed Gal (4:24)
  2. Champion Lovers (4:31)
  3. Beyond Limitation (4:11)
  4. Don't Be Shy (5:48)
  5. Elevation (5:10)
Review: Last year, we got a bit giddy with excitement over MIC's first two releases, which presented lost music from a 1980s drum machine enthusiast and a swathe of new cuts from Glaswegian cold-wave oddballs LAPS. The label's first missive of 2018 comes from rising star Lord Tusk and is every bit as good as its predecessors. Taken as a whole, it's rather hard to pigeonhole, featuring as it does tracks that variously fuse together sounds variously associated with post-punk dub, weirdo deep house, turn of the '90s London dub house (check the brilliant "Don't Be Shy"), the Art of Noise ("Beyond Limitation") and the dream house/dusty breakbeat fusions we've come to expect from Project Pablo and Jayda G ("Champion Lovers"). Throughout, it remains spaced-out, fuzzy and eccentric.

  3. Stay (Ray Mang’s Disco instrumental)
  4. Río Porque No Fue Un Sueno (Ray Mang’s extended instrumental)
Review: Venezuelan groovesters Los Amigos Invisibles have been infecting the house music world with the Latin-flavoured disco and funk since the 90s, and still their sunkissed sound resonates with younger generations. On this occasion it's Balearic operation Apersonal that turn to brighter days with the six-piece, riding high with original jams "Stay" and "Rio Porque No Fue Un Sueno" on the A side. Meanwhile on the flip Ray Mang turns out remixes of the original versions that keep the feel-good ingredients intact, providing you with some surefire heat well in advance of the summer months.

  4. Do It Yer Sen (6:56)
  5. Say Anything (6:20)
Review: This shadowy and mysterious duo are back with the third installment in their bold edit series. On the A side we have got "Rimini Cruising" which splices up a certain '80s pop hit. "Hott In The City" is an unholy mixture of disco-funk and synthpop. On the flip, it sounds like it might be a golden oldie by the one and only Gloria Gaynor getting fixed up for modern dancefloors on "Endo".

Review: The PBR-approved mystery edit series continues with four more anonymous versions. Ranging from out-and-out classic (the Metro Area feels on "Montego" and the added 'pep' to Cymande on "Brothers Slide") to the cult classic (the crooning cosmic charm of Chaplin Band's "Il Veliero") With added chugging, dubby Italo steamer "Restless" closing the show, it's another sublime collection from the PBR's man of mystery.

  1. 123 (9:55)
  2. 456 (8:02)
  3. 789 (6:13)
Review: When it comes to crafting quality edits of ludicrously obscure cuts, few can match long-serving scalpel fiend Loud-E. Having previously plied his wares on Ambassador's Reception and Berceuse Heroique's occasional re-edit series, the Netherlands-based producer has been recruited by Leeds-based, Balearic-minded imprint Passport to Paradise. Predictably, there's much to enjoy throughout, not least the trippy backwards effects, rubbery boogie bassline, starburst electronics and locked-in drums of extended cosmic disco workout "123". Elsewhere, Loud-E chops up some chiming, glassy-eyed, instrumental Balearic synth-pop on "456", before unleashing some wild and weird electronics on the out-of-this-world madness of "789".

  3. Take Me With You (Love Creation edit) (6:14)
Review: There's more dewy-eyed, loved-up re-edit action to be found on this second salve from the mysterious Love Creation crew. Opener "Turn My Back On You" is a sultry, late night delight; an impressively seductive rearrangement of a slow burning, Sade style shuffler full of lazy guitar lines, rising and falling bass, and crotch-stirring vocals. Stay tuned to side A for the psychedelic disco-rock trip that is "Mr Bates" - and, yes, it's definitely Balearic - or flip to the B for the freshly baked soul shuffle of "Take Me With You". All three edits are undoubtedly winners, and should suit warm up sets, afternoon jams, and dancers that don't need a hectic tempo to get down.

  3. Space Talk (Love Creation edit) (5:19)
Review: Thus far we've had re-splices of artists as diverse as Ministry, Sade, The Police and Coloursound on the Love Creation series of edits series out of Australia. The fourth edition in the series continues on a winning streak. From the astro-funk of "Land Of Hunger" (Love Creation Touch Of Acid edit) to a lo-slung edit of a certain soul classic on "Luther's Jam" on the A side. On the flip, we've got some vocals of a legendary Indian chanteuse on "Space Talk" (Love Creation edit) which really bring the funk!

  1. Get It On (vocal)
  2. Get It On (instrumental)
  3. Fffreak (vocal)
  4. Fffreak (instrumental)
Review: There's a cool air of mystery about this Sacramento-based contemporary disco producer. Letting the music do all the talking, he's provided four different solutions for all party scenarios. Leaning back heavily on an 80s boogie flex, both "Get It On" and "Fffreak" comes with delicate sexy vocals and supreme, sopping wet synth bass. The former comes with a larger vocals and more emphasised synth riffs while the latter is a more subtle, heads-down jam with softer vocal delivery and more melodic meanders. With added instrumentals thrown in for good measure, this covers all disco bases. It would be 'cryminal' not to check this out.

Review: Sacramento boogie merchants, Risque affiliates and all-round soul doctors Love Cryme return to the Pendergrass party with two more stone cold cuts. "Electric Lady" soothes with an 80s synth soul style where singer Tucker really shines in the forefront with his honeyed dulcets. "Under The N Fluence" hits the later hours of the night with a supreme new jack city style kick laced with some finger scorching guitar licks. Cryme de la cryme.

LSD 1 (12")
Cat: LSD 1. Rel: 23 Apr 18
  1. Track 1 (9:38)
  2. Track 2 (7:15)
Review: We're not quite sure who is behind the new Love Saves The Day edit series, but we can tell that they've been studying classic scalpel rubs. You see, both the untitled reworks showcased on the series' first 12" are subtly re-mastered dancefloor rearrangements of the kind that could have been done back in the day on reel-to-reel tape. On side A, the unknown editors brilliantly play around with Atmosfear's "Dancing in Outer Space", teasing out the percussion before dropping into the familiar, horn-heavy refrain. Meanwhile on the reverse, Tamiko Jones' breathy, synth-laden disco smoker "Can't Live Without Your Love" is given an extra-sleazy tweak. Proper re-edits by, and for, those who respect the classics.

Review: Superior scalpel business here, as the shadowy Loves Saves The Day series serves up another trio of tape edit style rearrangements devoid of needless extra drums and cheap house trickery. The A-side, a nine and a half minute workout rich in prominent, rubbery electric bass, layered and delayed vocal snippets, ambidextrous jazz-funk drums and bold electric piano flourishes, is particularly potent. File under "cosmic disco-jazz". On the flip the mystery editors first give a familiar disco favourite a little nip and tuck, before successfully turning their attention to a deliciously dreamy slab of jazz-funk/disco-funk fusion rich in glassy-eyed vocals and life-affirming instrumentation. Solid gold!

  2. Moon Bounce (4:01)
Review: When it comes to new boogie and synth-soul with an authentic flavour, you can't beat Chicagoan institution Star Creature. Predictably, their latest 7" should be another essential purchase for synthesizer lovers everywhere. It comes from Love's High, a collaborative project helmed by storied Israeli beat-maker Soul Supreme and vocalist Marlon Penn. "Love Generation" is a jaunty and colourful affair, with Penn's sumptuous vocal and hooky trombone motifs rising above waves of synth-bass and glistening electronic melodies. Turn to the flipside and you'll find intergalactic instrumental "Moon Bounce", which fittingly reminded us of Moon B and Dam Funk.

Lovebirds Edits (hand-stamped heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: RNT 007. Rel: 01 Oct 14
  1. Funk So Pretty
  2. Free (Lovebirds' Beautiful rework)
  3. Donwanchooback
Review: It's been a while since Hamburg producer and selector Sebastian Doring last donned his Lovebirds moniker, three years in fact when he memorably championed the cause of the thuggish Honey Badger for the Tear Drops label. Here he resurfaces on Brooklyn edit emporium Razor-N-Tape for a triplet of funked up tweaks which should service any lagging dancefloor. You'd have to be a sheltered mind not to know the source material for "Funk So Pretty", but there's plenty of trickery and FX at play from Doring here too. The self styled "Beautiful Rework" of "Free" should be filed under mood setter whilst "Donwanchooback" is at the opposite end of the scale, primed for deployment deep into the night.

  1. Dove Sei (original Deep mix) (5:44)
  2. Dove Sei (Raiders Of The Lost Arp remix) (7:18)
  3. Dove Sei (SIRS cut) (7:59)
Review: Sebastien Doring - better known as veteran deep house and disco fusionist Lovebirds - has been pretty quiet of late, by his previously prolific standards at least. Happily, his first single of 2018 is one of his strongest releases to date. "Dove Sei" was seemingly inspired by Tullio de Piscopo's Balearic classic "Stop Bajon (Primavera)", though the A-side "Original Deep Mix" is far dreamier and synthesizer-heavy than that cut, and is underpinned by a particularly chugging electronic groove. The Raiders of the Lost Arp mix, rich in glistening but urgent guitar riffs and jazzy Rhodes solos, is arguably the pick of the pair, though SIRS' more Italo-disco influenced take is also rather tasty.

Review: For Record Store Day 2017 Razor-N-Tape presents "Icarus", a slice of chilled out analogue soul by Lovebirds aka Sebastian Doering with remixes. The original is a deep soul jam reminiscent of Roy Ayers' Ramp project, while the Tall Black Guy's remix gets more of an R&B swagger on in style. We particularly enjoyed JKriv's lush little boogie down rendition, which really hit that sweet spot in all its neon lit glory. Each mix gets its own side in this double 7" pack, with stunning full color artwork, making it a truly special package perfect for both

  3. Kleeer - "I Love To Dance" (SMBD '79 edit) (4:28)
Review: UK imprint GAMM are back, following up great edit action by Nick The Record, Monkz 'N' Simz and Krewcial now with SMBD aka Simbad. He is back with the second volume of his seasonal themed reworks on the label. On side A we get a big dancefloor bullet where he teams up with Mike Lowrey and they fuse John Coltrane with Craig Mack on the hypnotically funky groove of "Supreme Flava"- this one works perfectly! On the flip, he re-edits a classic disco jam by JKD Band entitled "Dream Machine" (SMBD '79 disco edit) which will be appreciated by those in the know. Finally, a handy modern revision of disco supergroup Kleeer's "I Love To Dance" (SMBD '79 edit) is what we'd call a respectful edit, indeed. This London based editor's work has built him a solid reputation worldwide, making him a very sought after producer and a busy DJ.

Starting out with the dreamy and sampledelic deep house of "Ola Do Mar" or the cheeky disco-funk edit of "Sleepy Hollow" which has a very familiar hook. Review: Macadam Mambo musclemen Sacha Mambo and Guillaume Des Bois take the reins for this one: covering the whole groove gamut we ignite with a straight-up European disco stomper ("Magic Disco") and climax with a dense, trippy, psychedelic funk piece textures with great groans and dizzying instrumentation ("Darling You're Erotic") In between we hit leftfield Spanish boogie on "Boys & Boys" and deliciously swooning slice of harmonic disco pop "Lady Samba". Each track more obscure than the last, this sums up why Macadam Mambo have developed their current spotless reputation.

Review: Ricardo Medina has popped up intermittently through the years as a wielder of hefty deep house, and so it goes on this new 12" for Wonder Stories. Take snappily titled "Mcoolaid", where the synths ping out bright and bold while the acidic bass and slamming drums keep the pressure at a constant peak, or the dark and nasty throb of "Fuego". Medina means business, and he's unabashed in his aim towards the big room peak time tech house crowd. "Techmoreno" keeps up the intensity, which gives Alejandro Paz the necessary ingredients for an equally smoking remix for the crafty jackers out there on the floor.

Review: After a three-year absence, former Redux and Cynic duo Machete Savane (AKA Saul Richards and Andy Bainbridge of Bad Passion Project) return to action. Fittingly, it comes on Bad Passion Project's Not An Animal Records. "Manticore" is something of a treat for those who like their disco electronic, atmospheric and doused in perm-sporting rock and '80s AOR influences (think winding guitar solos, Italo-disco arpeggio lines, punk-funk bass, and spacey electronics). It comes backed with two contrasting remixes: a throbbing, disco-tech revision from ESP Institute regular, and an ambient re-invention from Jonny Nash. The latter's alternately glistening and dreamy version is as sublime as you'd expect.

Review: Given that Juan MacLean has released almost all of his music on DFA, we were rather surprised when this Razor 'N' Tape Reserve 12" showed up. We suspect that these are sample-heavy dancefloor tracks from MacLean's personal stash - the kind of cuts you regularly hear in his DJ sets but have previously not seen the light of day. Check, for example, the percussive peak-time romp that is muscular disco loop jam "Fine Time" and the classic boogie-meets-NYC house fusion of "Don't Stop For Nothing", which tips a sly wink towards Toney Lee classic "Reach Up". Elsewhere, "Everybody Clap" is a dustier, looser and hazier deep house excursion, while "Panic In Fort Greene Park" sees MacLean smother a trippy and hypnotic groove in spacey motifs and acid-style electronics.
