  3. General Purpose - "Concerto De Chasse" (edit) (6:45)
  4. Salvador Ricardo - "Cha Cha Flamongo" (edit) (4:34)
Review: General Purpose boys Len Leise and Salvador Ricardo have decided to launch their own re-edit series. For the first Also Known as Edits 12", Leise has decided to raid his own archive, offering up two tasty reworks first featured on his 2015 LL Edits EP (a 12" that now goes for silly money online). These brilliant reworks - the dreamy Brazilian Balearica of "Stars for Jorge" and equally starry, horizontal jazz-funk flex of "Desperado Dining" - can be found on the A-side, with the flip reserved for previously unheard rubs. There's "Conerto de Chasse", a heavily percussive, deep Afro-house edit from General Purpose that's also blessed with seriously tactile melodies, and Salvador Ricardo's "Cha Cha Flamongo", a Flamenco-goes-cha-cha cut that's as glassy-eyed and positive as it is loved-up and Balearic.

  4. Heavy Weather (Acid Rain mix) (8:17)
Review: Leonidas and Hobbes are old studio buddies. The duo's first collaborative release landed back in 2013 and they've been putting out occasional joint missives ever since. The Rags Of Time EP may well be their best 12" yet, though. Check, for example, the jaunty analogue nu-disco shuffle of opener "Web of Intrigue", where lo-fi synthesizer melody lines, Mexican horn samples and decidedly Balearic guitar solos wrap themselves around a gently bouncing groove. Or, for that matter, the "Acid Rain" mix of "Heavy Weather", a cheery triple-time workout built around clicking drum machine hits, thrillingly dusty synth stabs and tipsy electronics. The slightly jauntier and dreamier "Dawn Mix" of the same track is also rather tasty.

  4. What Do You Think (dub) (5:59)
Review: Italy's Samosa Records comes through with its second EP to date, another masterful stroke of house glory for the more suave-headed DJs out there. The new four-tracker comes from debutant Les Inferno, who drops the supremely soulful "Everything I Do" as the A-side leader, a Moodymann-reminiscent track with a sweet sample loop and an elegant beat swing, further perfected on the 'Breakdown' mix. Over on side B, "What Do You Think" unleashes the strings to offer a much more disco-led narrative, while its own dub version churns out some stupendous levels of bass for the dancefloor.

  4. Losing My Innocence (Cage & Aviary Swamp dub)
Review: Felix Dickinson and Jamie Read's revitalized L.H.A.S. Inc project return to the former's Cynic label with Losing My Innocence. In original form, L.H.A.S. Inc present a blue eyed slo mo acid side to their collective palette that demonstrates some notable diversity and a capacity for song writing. Complementing this is a dub from Dickinson in his Foolish Felix guise and two self styled 'swamp outs' from South London's finest Cage & Aviary.

  1. Get Up! (6:23)
  2. Let's Do It (5:11)
  3. Around (6:22)
Review: According to first-wave disco re-editors such as Danny Krivit, the perfect re-edit should simply be a rearrangement of an existing track that makes it more suitable for club plays. That seems to be the ethos behind the Light Touches series. Certainly, there's no attempt from editor Andrea Passenger to add contemporary production effects or beef up the bottom end with new beats; instead, this second volume in the series serves up a trio of tidy, club-ready rearrangements. On the A-side you'll find "Get Up", a groovy disco-funk outing rich in eyes-closed guitar motifs and restless horn lines. Turn to the B for the low-slung, up-tempo, string-drenched peak-time disco swirl of "Let's Have It" and "Around", a glassy-eyed, loved-up disco slow jam full of jaunty orchestration and hazy vocals.

  1. It's Up To You (How Far You Go) (4:13)
  2. Do It To The Max (4:39)
Review: Given that one of the founders of Al & The Kidd Records, Carl Kidd, was the musical driving force behind turn-of-the-'80s Washington D.C combo Light Years, it's perhaps unsurprising that the re-born disco-era imprint has a wealth of previously unheard material from the band to share. The label's latest "45" showcases two of these cuts. On the A-side you'll find the Clavinet-heavy D.C disco-funk of "It's Up To You (How Far You Go)", a decidedly cosmic wig-out with urgent vocals and instrument solos aplenty. Flip for the spacey synths, rising horn lines and Mass Production style disco-funk hustle of "Do It To The Max".

Review: Norwegian nu-disco hero Rune Lindbaek is the man behind the long running Drum Island Records imprint - which has been bringing the neon-lit boogie down flavours to us for over 20 years! His new imprint delivers some finely tuned edit action and they all sound fairly on point but above all - they're respectful. There's a Patrick Cowley-ish sounding affair like on "Cosmic Oslo", the neon-lit '80's vibe of "Gressholmen" features a familiar synth riff from a certain pop band of the era - but we can't remember which one (they're possibly from Australia!). Get down like a proper Disco Stu on the late night groove of "Kung Fu Man". This is the second release on Rune Lindbaek's Norsk Tripping imprint and follows up the first volume which came out back in 2015.

  1. Children Song (5:23)
  2. Video Track (7:02)
Review: Fresh from dropped an EP of killer edits on Bahnsteig23 under the alternative Beard in Dust alias, Leonid Lipelis pops up on Aussie imprint Animals Dancing. Happily, the cheekily named I Did These For Myself But Now It's For Everyone contains some of the Moscow-based producer's best material yet. Check, in particular, melodious A-side "Children Song", where sampled Japanese children's chants rise above a snappy, delay heavy drum machine groove and a Marimba style melody. Over on side B, "Video Track" is a similarly jaunty and positive affair, with more Kalimba style melodies and African chants weave in and out of a fuzzy, hybrid deep house/nu-disco backing track. While not as instantly arresting as the A-side, it's nevertheless an impressive dancefloor workout.

  3. Folamour - "When She Moves, I'm Moved" (7:41)
  4. Gari Romalis & Lello Di Franco - "Luv Game" (6:53)
Review: In tribute to Record Store Day, the Diggin Disco Deep crew has put together what could be its tastiest 12" yet. Pressed on squeaky clean white vinyl, volume five in the series boasts cuts from some of the edit scene's best-loved talents. Lipski kicks things off with the blissfully wavy loops and languid Balearic house grooves of "Magical Luv", before the Silver Rider hits the mark via the softly spun nu-disco goodness of "Madness". On the flip you'll find EP highlight "When She Moves, I'm Moved" by Folamour, a sax-laden shuffle through deep house/disco fusion that sneakily pays tribute to a wedding party favourite, and the head-in-the-clouds deep house bump of Gari Romalis and Lello di Franco's "Luv Game".

  3. Scraper (3:41)
  4. Out (2:08)
Review: Along with the extended retrospective detailing their earlier music escapades that's surfaced this week, U.S. based reissue gods Superior Viaduct have masterfully relicensed Liquid Liquid's final iconic Optimo single, originally out on 99 Records in 1983 and still a heavily coveted four tracker from all corners of the digging spectrum. "Optimo" - an utterly break-ridden, funked-out monster - "Scraper" and "Out" are all full bodied and sublime on the low frequencies, but it's "Cavern" that gets all the attention on here, bass-heavy roller filled with wavy vocals, a heavy percussion swing and a penchant for being mastered by the kings of hip hop and house. Totally essential 12" in our books.

  3. Sparkle (5:35)
  4. Sparkle (Dave Allison remix) (5:56)
Review: Back in 2016 we waxed lyrical about the synth-funk focused debut album from Liquid Pegasus, a producer who could well become a major force on the nu-boogie scene in years to come. Here he presents his first solo single since, a notably vibrant, colourful and sun-kissed affair that regularly reaches rush-inducing levels of positivity. Check the meandering synth-bass, sparkling stabs and eyes-closed jazz guitar solos of "Makin' It Hot". "Sparkle" is deeper, more laidback and a touch more disco-fied - whilst of course emphasizing bold boogie synths - but also superb. Dave Allison does a great job slightly upping the tempo and increasing the Balearic factor on his "Sparkle" remix, while Matt Hughes take on "Makin' It Hot" is arguably sturdier and more club-ready than Liquid Pegasus' original version.

Review: Known best for his role in cultish Swedish production unit Studio alongside Rasmus Hagg, Dan Lissvik has resurfaced on Smalltown Supersound with the first of a series of singles that will precede a much talked about solo album for the label. Those familiar with the sumptuous cosmic meanderings of Studio will be immediately at home here as soon as those velvety keys roll out over field recordings on "Intro" and from here Lissvik opens up his sound palette in panoramic style. "Airwalk" is quintessential Scandofunk, taut basslines, ethereal vocal harmonies and rich yet subtle instrumentation whilst there is a delightful flutter to the title track "Shuvit" that will captivate Lissvik completists. More please!

  3. International Track (Max Essa remix)
Review: "Lizards are Lee Forster (1/3 Last Waltz) and James Hadfield (the mainstay of the Elizabeth Collective). Taking over a full side, and clocking in at over 9 minutes, Anthemic understatement is a very difficult trick to pull of, but the deepness of feel here, coupled with the restraint shown in rhythm and melody, allows the track space to ebb, flow and truly get under the skin of the listener. It's one of those rare tracks that are as equally beautiful as they are danceable. International Track lives up to it's name, seeing the North Eastern English producers channel the Japanese take on the Balearic sound as heard in productions by artists such as CosMes. Ironically, with his remix, Japanese based Max Essa lends a Euro Pop lilt to the track, softening the beats and adding delicate 80s digital melodies."

  3. Night Panda
Review: Australian secret-weapon Jamie Lloyd delivers a dancefloor winner for his first 12" on Future Classic, instantly establishing himself as another name to watch in rapidly heating Aussie scene! The title track is an epic electro disco burner, blossoming with cool sounds, rolling basslines and freaky riffs. The track immediately appealed to our Finnish friends Putsch 79 who lay on the funk in their remix, complete with their trademark cheeky synth stabs, a killer bassline and clever key changes. Perhaps saving the best to last is the 45rpm flip "Night Panda", a straighter workout that transforms into a rolling electro house killer while retaining an originality of style and sound selection that give its own distinctive Jamie Lloyd flavour.

Cat: CMC 288. Rel: 07 Feb 18
  1. Calling Out (5:39)
  2. Calling Out (instrumental) (5:35)
Review: Former Paper Recordings artist Sophie Lloyd apparently started working on "Calling Out" whilst gripped by the January blues. Her intention was simply to make "happy music". To that end, she turned to her gospel roots. The results, shared here on 7" single for the first time, are little less than spectacular. With collaborator Dames Brown in tow, Lloyd's vocals - accompanied by a gospel choir, of course - simply soar above a jaunty, piano-heavy track rich in live instrumentation. It sits somewhere between traditional gospel, house and disco, with a flipside instrumental brilliantly showcasing the quality of the instrumentation throughout. The piano solos, in particular, are breathlessly good.

During the trip expect to be plucked from reality with the same tight guitar string picks of Kikroko's "Man This Is My Girl", look forward to some serious robotic struts on the Italo classic "Takin' It Straight", prepare for a savvy string massage on "Space Sentry", anticipate a sloppy bass kiss upside your chops on "Boogieasy" and be sure to receive the loopy, filtered funk finale that is the "Makin Love To The Music" sucker punch. 1. (You've Got) That Something (extended version) (10:43)
  2. Dancing Into The Stars (extended version) (11:05)
Review: Boogie badman Leroy Burgess was responsible for some of the greatest disco and electrofunk jams of the early '80s. Even so, few were quite as special as "(You've Got) That Something", a 1981 killer that distilled all that was good about his productions - those distinctive cowbell patterns, life-affirming slap bass, spiraling synths, hard-wired disco guitars and one of his finest vocal performances - in one essential, 11-minute package. As on the original '81 12", it comes backed with the similarly impressive "Dancing Into The Stars", whose melodic bassline is arguably even better than that found on the A-side. If you don't already own a copy of the original pressing, this reissue should be an essential purchase.
