Review: After his debut release with remixes from Arpanet and Mr Oizo, Kavinsky is back! Killed in a car crash back in 1986, Kavinsky is now a zombie in need of revenge. This record, released on Record Makers, is the story of his first steps in the world of the living dead. Three powerful and original tracks and a Sebastian remix. A bloody good one too.

  1. Low Altitude (4:29)
  2. Rumble Strip (3:29)
  3. Kyoto Haza (3:44)
Review: Excellent and much needed 12" pressing of Low Altitude from Australian boogie don Mike Kay! Originally surfacing on a limited 7" release through Melbourne imprint This Thing, it's given a wider release thanks to the dons at People's Potential Unlimited with the addition of a further cut from Kay. A Side track "Low Altitude" is a lot more DJ friendly now (ever tried beatmatching 45s?) and has been extended with more handclaps and disco noises from the funkateer Kay himself! If you're a rabid consumer of Tom Noble and Inskwel stuff or digged the Moon B issue on PPU earlier this year then you'll love this 808 boogie bumper. Face down, "Rumble Strip" eases up the tempo a nudge for some slick and sweet analogue disco and the wonderfully smudgy bonus cut "Kyoto Haze" really shows off Kay's melodic chops.

  1. I Get Lifted (3:02)
  2. I Get Lifted (Todd Terje edit) (7:09)
Review: A limited yellow vinyl funk odyssey from Record Store Day, "I Get Lifted" is taken from KC & The Sunshine Band's second album (1975) Still sounding shiny and floor-minded, the original stands the test of time incredibly well. Todd Terje's edit, however, takes it to another level; upping the tempo (and, possibly, the key), he's extended the right places, added a little more emphasis on the kicks and made sure we can't miss the breakdowns and instrumental sections.

  1. Yeah Rhythm (Lego Jazz 4 AM) (6:49)
  2. Yeah Alright (Lego Funk Touch) (6:05)
Review: Another month, another freshly minted re-edit imprint. This one comes from Italy and appears to be the work of upstart editors Lego Edit and Bio. Fans of bossa revivalist Nicola Conte should enjoy A-side "Yeah Rhythm (Lego Jazz 4AM)", which brilliantly blends elements from a dusty bossa classic with what appear to be horns, vocals and other choice samples from a Fela Kuti classic. It's an interesting idea, brilliantly executed. On the flipside you'll find "Yeah Alright", a more traditional re-edit of the same source material with a few extra horn stabs here and there to keep the dancefloor bubbling.

This EP continues his unique take on pop music and includes an extended and radical b-side rework for DJs and dancefloors. Don't miss this Environ release.

Review: Montreal's KenLo Craqnuques has been bubbling away in the underground for some time, but lucky for us Hot Shot Sounds took notice and now present his first outing on vinyl with the Wheeels EP. There is an irresistible funk to the sounds that Craqnuques conjures up, pushing fat, Moog-esque basslines and low slung machine beats rolling at an easy tempo that hark back to the golden days of boogie and electro funk. "Mollusque" indicates how his is far from a throwback sound though - this is up to the minute instrumental RnB that recognises the true roots of the genre while looking to the future, and it sounds utterly fresh.

  1. Al Kent - "Just As Long" (7:20)
  2. Al Kent - "L & O" (11:53)
  3. Devin Dare - "Play With Me" (10:08)
  4. Devin Dare - "True Ex" (8:42)
Review: Given the "Waltered States" title and Al Kent's well-known love of Walter Gibbons, it doesn't take a genius to work out that the re-edits showcased here are of tracks originally remixed by the legendary NYC disco-mixer. Kent handles 12" one, unfurling the groovy, low-slung, bass-driven disco bliss of "Just as Long" before whipping his shirt off and dancing all night to the swirling strings, rubbery bass and driving percussion of "L&O". Over on record two, sometime Misterio duo Devin Dare delivers an occasionally loopy, ten-minute rearrangement of sweet disco shuffler "Play With Me", before delving into the world of Philadelphia soul on the anthem-like "True Ex".

  1. Ferry Home (8:32)
  2. I'm Still Qualified (7:44)
  3. Twin Magik (5:56)
Review: London-based producer Keyboard Masher has been flying out a no-nonsense brand of disco-infected grooves since 2010 on their own KM Editions label. Devoid of hype and placing the emphasis on the music, the eighth installment in this crucial series of seductive late night jams packs in more boogie than you can shake a particularly funky stick at. "Ferry Home" strikes an irresistible 80s note with its live band undercurrent, while "I'm Still Qualified" slinks down into a more sultry mood before "Twin Magjik" heads skywards on a bed of twinkling synth tones. Sweet disco tones don't come fresher than this.

  1. Kendo Rocks
  2. Bernie's Boogie
  3. Getting Spacey Again
Review: The first "KM Editions" EP of the year, it's another essential addition to the collection as the London editor lays down three very distinct chapters. "Kendo Rocks" pays homage to UK wrestling OG Kendo Nagasaki with feint Oriental motifs over a steady chugging, dubby groove while "Bernie's Boogie" takes us on a hazy, balmy Gainsbourg style trip. Finally we hit "Getting Spacey Again" with a juicy synth-laced, slap-bassed disco groove looped up with raw majesty. Get mashed.

Review: Premier revisitations from hot to trot Parisian love station, the ninth edition continues to dig deep into the realms of the long-lost and highly collectable. The lead track, KIC's "Don't You Want My Love", for example, now fetches triple figures. Elsewhere SPG's "Loveland" is a fly-by-night falsetto funk shakedown while 24 Karat Gold's rare "New Love" struts with stunning string stabs and an energy that flares from zero to glitterball in two bars. TCB Band's "Children Of The Future" closes the sneaky session with a sweet harmonic hot chocolate soul. Blink and you'll miss it.

  1. Rock Attack
  2. No Wonder
  3. Rock Attack (Faze Action Discomix)
Review: The Konduko label was a gem of early 80s Miami groove, playing host to a range of projects from Noel Williams. "Rock Attack" was originally credited to J. Griffith, but resurfaces here on Emotional Rescue with Williams' King Sporty & The Ex Tras billed at the helm. It's a firecracker of a tune, revolving around a stuttering electro bassline and the loosest, funkiest set of drums, sounding fresh as a daisy with a new lick of mastering paint. Meanwhile Faze Action sprinkle a little contemporary magic on the track, making a beautifully tripped out "Discomix" that sounds more like a cosmic dub extravaganza to these ears.

Review: Emotional Rescue do the right thing and tap up the Konduko label - an oft overlooked gem of the Miami bass scene - for one of the biggest tracks in Noel 'King Sporty' Williams' back catalogue. "Haven't Been Funked Enough" is an absolute battering ram of proto electro, staggeringly advanced for its time (it was originally released in 1982). There's also a "Rapstrumental" mix with some life-affirming instructive speech across the jam, but the real icing on the cake is Idjut Boy Nad's wild and ranging "Discomix" on the B side. It's a truly spaced out affair that sounds like it was mixed live on the desk with its rugged FX sends and woozy atmosphere.

  4. You Don't Have To (5:38)
Review: Italian legend Kiu D is back for his latest release in the form of The Journey LP. Having climbed the ranks of modern disco producers with consistent releases for the likes of Hot Digits, Special Edition and Spa In Disco, he returns to Masterworks with his fourth outing on the label. With a whopping four tracks to pick from, the Bristol based producer serves up the lo-slung '70s sleaze of "Dynamite" and the slo-mo funk loops of "The Journey" on the A side. On the flip, the deep and neon-lit nu-disco goodness of "You Don't Have To" is perfect for the late night and the EP's real highlight. As the label state best themselves, it is 'capable of tickling any punters boogie feather.'

  3. Amityville (DJ Tennis remix) (8:37)
  4. Paco (7:37)
Review: Alex "Kiwi" Warren is undoubtedly a star in the making. Since he last appeared on Futureboogie in 2016, his stock has risen further thanks to fine outings on Moda Black, Blitz and 17 Steps. Predictably, this is another fine EP. We're particularly enjoying the horror-inspired Italo-disco chug of "Amityville", where Warren makes terrific use of notable vocal samples and a thickset arpeggio bassline, though DJ Tennis's breezier, disco-tinged deep house re-make is almost as good. There's more dark and throbbing Italo-disco style fun to be had via the thrillingly heavy and pulsating "Warriors", while EP closer "Paco" - all glacial, tumbling synthesizer melodies, undulating acid bass and unfussy drum machine beats - offers a more considered option for those searching for solid warm-up fare.

Cat: OMD 07. Rel: 23 Aug 16
  1. Throw Down (original mix) (5:05)
  2. Throw Down (Latin Freestyle mix) (5:26)
Review: For the seventh volume in Optimo Music's Disco Plate series, JD Twitch has recruited Alex Warren AKA Kiwi, whose previous releases on Blase Boys Club were particularly well received. "Throw Down" is arguably his most ambition cut yet: a cover version of Carmen's cult 1986 electrofunk jam of the same name that comes in two contrasting versions. On the virtual A-side you'll find Warren's original version, where Ciara Holder's confident, nuanced vocal rides a chunky synth bassline, clipped guitars, sparkling synthesizer flourishes and an unfussy, toe-tapping drum machine rhythm. Arguably even better is the Latin Freestyle mix, which sounds like a long lost Latin Rascals production with additional, spine-tingling piano riffs.

Review: Absolute funk fire from Gladys and co; "Love Is Always On Your Mind" is arguably one of their most overlooked jams in history. Heavily swung and quite gritty in comparison to their other work, it's an instant floor display lavished with stacks of energy and groove. Flip for the heavily referenced, sampled and edited 1980 classic "Bourgie Bourgie". Silky soul disco at its finest. Another white hot reissue success from Buddah.

  1. The Spirit
  2. Your Houze
Review: Koenig Saatgut supposedly appears for the first time in 15 years with this rough and ready piano house/breakbeat roller. "The Spirit" is an unabashedly big track, using a catchy 90s piano lick and sticking a brash boom bap beat underneath it. "Your Houze" is actually the smart pick here though, bringing a modernist approach to vintage, sample heavy house music. There's a whiff of French touch about this one, but mixed up with a ravey attitude that guarantees these tracks will be setting off more than a few dances.

Review: Spiltmilk's MSLX aren't messing around; launching with not one but two powerful (not to mention limited) 45s in the same week, Brazilian Frenchman Kojake follows Spiltmilk's lead with two muscular boogie cuts. "A Droite A Gauche" takes the Stereo MCs to frolic in the deepest, darkest boogie pastures possible while "Goall" lets the tightly plucked bass guitar do all the negotiating. Suitable for disco, house and funk DJs; MSLX have fine-tuned an ideal balance right here.

Review: Belgian producer Krewcial is one of those producers who flits in and out of activity, and has done so since the mid 90s. Lumberjacks In Hell have called upon this slippery character to lay down some righteous grooves for their latest missive, and the results are sublime. "2U" is funky house how it should be done, all stomping drums, dreamy pads and soulful licks for the party people in the place. "Heal" takes a more edited approach, holding back the bass for the ultimate dancefloor payoff. "Hit Me Off" ramps up the jazzy keys for a Detroit flavoured looped up throwdown, and then "The Session" fires off one last sumptuous rip through peak time perfection.

Review: Legendary musician, DJ and broadcaster Philippe Krootchey was a hugely influential creative whirlwind throughout the 70s and 80s in France. Founder of Love International, frequent Casablanca collaborator with the likes of Lizzy Mercier Descloux and Mathematiques Modernes and an active member of France's foremost gay rights groups, his political and creative messages were clear in every action he made. Originally released in 1984, "Qu'est Ce Qu'il" carries a strong anti-racial message with humour that worked so well he re-sang it English and it eventually became "Whatazzy". Flip for "Hot Voodoo Dub" to find his creative messages as a studiosmith were also very clear.
