  5. Neo Experience - "Human" (3:26)
Review: As with its' 12 predecessors, the latest compilation style EP from publicity-shy French diggers Unlimited Love gathers together an impressive selection of sought-after gems. This time round, many of the cuts are taken from eye-wateringly expensive and hard-to-find private press records. Check, for example, the fizzing 1982 boogie of Jeancy's "Reservation", the sweet breeziness of Karizma's "Will You Dance With Me" (an original 7" copy of which would set you back around L300) and the skewed, orchestra-smothered quirkiness of Marion Javius's "Waiting in the Wings". Elsewhere, Makonde's "Manzara" is a heavy chunk of psychedelic-minded Afro-funk, while Neo Experience's sumptuous "Human" is a lesser-known chunk of Philly soul bliss.

  2. You Turn Me On (dub) (6:07)
Review: Classic freestyle vibes from 1985: original copies of this on Nezz have been known to pass hands for over L100 but thankfully City Of Dreams have had the good grace to commission a reissue. The original has that raw honesty that many freestyle records are cherished for; the synths are loose, the mix isn't polished and Jennette's girl-next-door voice sounds real and untouched. The dub is special, too; a splice and diced 808 throwdown, it still sounds just as excitable and funky as it did 30 years ago.

Cat: LANDEDREC 011RSD. Rel: 03 May 17
  1. On The Floor (Studio 54 mix) (6:39)
Review: One of the true underground heroes of the Detroit techno scene, Dwayne Jensen has been there from the beginning and worked with everyone from Kevin Saunderson to Scott Grooves and Norm Talley, to name but a few. His own productions have featured on a who's who of labels from Soiree, Rawax, his own Fathom imprint and of course London's Landed: who for Record Store Day 2017 present this. Treat yourself to his new edit entitled "On The Floor" (Studio 54 mix). We sure know this one: it's an oldie but a goodie and Jensen shows his deft hand at re-splicing a classic disco tune for modern dancefloors.

  1. First Stomp (NYC dub) (8:20)
  2. First Stomp (vocal Up mix) (5:48)
Review: "First Stomp", a bubbly chunk of Clavinet-laden electrofunk/Balearic fusion with Latin influences and clear nods to proto-house, was one of the highlights of Jex Opolis's recent debut album, Ravines. Here it gets the remix treatment, with the producer himself delivering a pair of club-ready interpretations. On the A-side you'll find the dreamy but club-ready "NYC Dub", a swirling, dreamy and loved-up affair that makes greater use of the original's Latin chants as well as some fresh new cowbell rhythms. The B-side "Vocal UP Mix" is an altogether more radical transition, with Jex Opolis re-imagining the cut as a cheery chunk of Puerto Rican proto-house complete with Latin piano riffs and locked-in drum machine percussion.

  7. Doto (JKriv rework) (6:50)
  8. Nao Escuta (JKriv rework) (4:41)
Review: New York's JKRIV is shaping up to be something of a nu-disco revelation, particularly for his love for all things 'outernational'. In fact, then DJ-producer has released nothing but hip-swinging Latin funk over the last few years, and this RSD 2018 release for Brooklyn's Razor-N-Tape, Ferias 77' Reworks, is testament to that. In here, you'll find nothing but sick reinterpretations of classic Brazilian funk and disco, re-moulded to fit the modern ear and, of course, the modern sound-systems. Subtle swings of boogie-filtered disco, deep and sensual house, and a whole load of trippy-hop make this a blazing summer belter, and there's even a slow, Balearic rework of Edu Lobo's infamous "Ponteio".

  1. Red Sharon - "Handle It" (JKriv RNT dub) (8:48)
  2. Marashal - "Socket Rockin" (JKriv RNT edit) (8:16)
Review: The UK's Kat is back with yet more tasteful edits of forgotten gems. From disco to house, folk to funk and balearic nuggets: these guys know the score. This time around it's over to New York City's Jason Kriveloff aka Jkriv, who works that magic razor once again on these wonderful re-edits. On the A side we've got Red Sharon (see what he did there?) with "Handle It" (JKriv RNT dub) which takes a right diggers delight into sultry, late night territory and sure to burn up any dancefloor. On the flip is Marashal (oh come on already!) with "Socket Rockin". No guesses what's going on here but just for the record: it is one funky and soul filled celebration and most of all, a respectful edit.

  2. Space Traveler (Riccio rework) (6:08)

  4. Dance The Blues Away (Em Vee edit) (5:55)
Review: Given the talent on display, you'd expect this second Editor's Kutz #5 12" to be rather good. It is, of course, with all four tracks hitting the mark. J Kriv steps up first, layering sweet strings, blissful guitar solos and sparkling synthesizers over a beefed-up jazz-funk groove. Riccio weighs in with the similarly hazy, stoner rock era blue-eyed soul revision "Space Traveller", before The Noodleman loops up acoustic guitars, baggy vocals and twittering flute solos on his house-not-house take on "Baby Doll". Finally, Amsterdam-based bad man Marcel Vogel dons his EmVee guise to drop a heavy chunk of stripped-back, sax-laden disco-house in the shape of EP highlight "Dance The Blues Away".

  2. Better Than This (Soul Talk mix)
  3. Better Than This (Dego & Kaidi mix)
  4. Better Than This
Review: Paul Johnson - not to be confused with his Dance Mania namesake - is a British vocalist known for his work with '80s gospel group Paradise. A special numbered version of this record was released for Record Store Day this year, but if you missed out on that, or don't want any of the bells and whistles, here's the OG. And what soulful house artist could be better to remix such a track than Frankie Knuckles, who does so with a classic cut of heavenly house music like only he can, while the Soul Talk mix is down beat and sultry, oozing the same type of emotion you'd hear from Marvin Gaye. Meanwhile Dego & Kaidi open up the B-side with a stripped back, but still very musical version of "Better Than This", while Osiki Ojo really works the oohs and ahhs in their mix. Only happiness and love on this record.

  1. You (5:52)
  2. My Music (5:42)
Review: Another gem from the archives of Des Moines' favourite son: Samuel Jonathan Johnson - gets a much needed official reissue here. Johnson came from a family of musicians who were originally based in the Midwest. When he was six years old, the family moved to New York City, where he played for several churches and quickly gained notoriety as one of the city's finest musicians. His LP My Music was released in Europe to modest acclaim, but never received recognition back home. Disappointed in the outcome, he went into early retirement as a recording artist and began to work with local bands in the New York area. The 12" mix featured here of "You" combines the original funk riffs, captivating string arrangements and uplifting piano with a squelchy lead synth - which elevates the track to a whole new level. The aforementioned "My Music" on the B side is now a favourite with the diggers - spiritual soul from the one and only Samuel Jonathan Johnson.

Review: Rewind! It's 1975 and Grace Jones's inimitable character is defined by her role as a fashion model. She dips her toe in the musical waters she'd later boil with her uncompromised attitude and raw funk and records this for French label Orfeus. The a-side is a slapping soul gem that's almost northern in its energy, the b-side is a dreamy folk sojourn with upbeat pianos and a fair share of French. A historic moment for Jones that became instantly overshadowed by her endless creative repertoire, this special Record Store Day re-run is a fascinating piece of musical history.

  4. Vagabundo Club Social - "Sonico Amor" (7:41)
Review: Perhaps we should think of Whiskey Disco's Small Batch series as their attempt at "artisan disco". Certainly, the re-edits on show should have a few hipsters - and plenty of disco DJs - stroking their hirsute chins in appreciation. Dubtribe Soundsystem's Sunshine Jones kicks things off with the mid-80s synth-pop-goes-acid-house brilliance of "Lovergirl", while regular collaborators Ed Wizard & Disco Double Dee doff a cap to Sly & Robbie and Larry Levan on the dub disco vibes of "Love Me Too". Those after some high tempo jazz-funk-meets-disco-house thrills should check Will Buck and PRTMNTO's "I Need Your Love". As for Vagabundo Club Social's "Sonico Armor", it's a hazy, dub-flecked Balearic disco delight.

Review: Fresh from a fine guest appearance on the long running KAT edits imprint, the Jongno Edits crew returns home for volume five in their ongoing reworks series. This time round, there are two tracks to choose from, both of which explore the left-of-centre, post-punk end of disco. A-side "42 Below" sets the tone, focusing the action around a lolloping, dub-flecked jazz-funk groove rich in elastic electric bass, loose drumming and bold synthesizer lines. The mysterious re-editors flip the script on the B-side, delivering an impeccable rearrangement of a lesser-known, low-slung mutant disco favourite that's as intoxicating as it is heavy.

  3. Tum Tum
Review: Jonny 5 can rightly be considered a mainstay of Bahnsteig 23 now, as he returns to the label for the third time. It seems that the main source of inspiration for this latest opus from the intermittent producer has been the Indian sub continent, and he's channeled those vibes into three wild and wicked tracks for the weird dance party. "Bengali Dub" channels the proto electro vibes of 80s synth pop and shoots it through with some illustrious sample drops, while "Simha" works more like a particularly bold edit loping in a polyrhythmic fashion that will have the floor hopping like mad to keep up. "Tum Tum" turns up the heat on the B side with a deadly electronic revision of an Indian classic.

Review: Following initial appearances on Bahnsteig 23, Jonny 5 returns on the Pleasure Wave label with more of that well-travelled, groovesome voodoo for all manner of sonic wayfarers. "Apocalypse" in particular is a stunning piece of tom-powered menace, but it's quickly offset by the bubbling cosmic delights of "Electronix". "Firedance" on the B-side channels some righteous 80s industrial and synth pop tropes to create it's own kind of drama, and then "Stardriver" finishes the EP off with some pulsing, noirish wave synths and gaseous atmospherics. With the styles shifting from track to track, Jonny 5 has once again done a sterling job of keeping his options open and keeping us locked expectantly into his delirious sound.

Now Kalita have done the right thing and got hold of the release for a much needed repress, and it's highly likely this jam will become a staple for anyone with a taste for African grooves of all shapes and sizes. Review: Having already reissued the Joubert Singers disco classic "Stand On the Word" in its original form earlier this year, French label Favourite get busy with a remix-heavy accoutrement in twelve inch format. Those new to the art of collecting classic discotheque vinyl will no doubt be tempted by the appearance of the much vaunted Larry Levan mix, which turns out wasn't actually by the legendary DJ but instead the equally brilliant and much missed Walter Gibbons. Regardless, the remix is a classic in the disco canon, and is complemented by three all new renditions. Long term label associate Patchwork comes through with a nicely judged remix that realigns the groove to a slinky Philly disco swagger, while on the flip Austrian duo Panoptikum Arkestra go for a stripped back dubby beatdown angle. Local Parisian production talent Walter Mecca calls on the spirit of p-funk and Dilla for a nicely blunted hip-hop take to round out this 12" nicely.

Living up to it's dignified and reserved billing, this fifth release on the offshoot finds the Nijmegen-based Peeman laying down some luscious, colourful disco vibes that will brighten up any sun laden afternoon on the terrace. Title track "Hot & Bothered" sets the tone with a summery vibe underpinned by some bumping drums, whilst "I'm wishin'" glides with a subtle house bump and some wonderful vocal touches. Review: Steve Kahn & Co. are yet another of those curios of the early 80s that Best Italy have dug out, dusted down, spruced up and repressed for your eclectic party pleasure. "Got To Have Your Loving" is a pure feel good jam at every turn - it's got a very natural, live band sound mixed by the legendary Tee Scott that especially makes the aqueous bass playing shine through. Whether you plump for the vocal or the instrumental, this is the kind of record that could set a wedding party on fire as much as a serious heads-down disco funk session. You'll no doubt get a lot of mileage out of this one, and have a great time in the process.

  4. No End (Vezurro remix)
Review: From the Leath-meister: The limited Especial Specials continues with 4 remixes of Jaakko Eino Kalevi's Dreamzone EP. Featuring a heavy weight line up of Tom Noble, Heatsick, Peaking Lights and Vezurro, this is an all-bases-covered masterclass is taking Jaakko's pop leanings and giving them some boogie, dub and Italo sparkle. Hot on the heels of the Steaua de Mare Remixes comes 4 retakes of Jaakko Eino Kalevi's idiosyncratic pop stylings. Licensed from Weird World Records, this sees the multi-instrumentalist's original Dreamzone EP handed over for readjustment. The up, up boogie vibes of Tom Noble's calling card create his best remix to take. No Fun maybe Jaakko's 'ladies' love hymn, but with Tom's distinctive "never ending" bass and hats loops moving hips, a keys solo and vocal interplay ensure sublime perfection. Next Steven Warwick's superb Heatsick project implants his twisted casio-rawness in to Jaakko's world, marrying Memories ghostly vocals into a mix of afro-clipped beats and lo-fi melody that just fits. So happy to finally welcome in friends, family and inspiration, Peaking Lights in to the family. Aaron and Indra's uplifting dub love comes alive in this remix, with live bass grooves, vibing keys and Jaakko's unique vocal riding-a-riddim' all night long. To close up and coming Vezurro return to No Fun, providing an Italo love ode that can only move hearts into a true Rimini '84 summer affair. "Can't you see that I'm dancing?"

Review: From World Unknown, Magic Feet and Tusk Wax and now on to Kinfolk, Tim Rivers is marking out a place in that world of mystical grooves where acid, kosmische, new age, Balearic and wyrd pagan dance can all jam to the same beat. The title track on The Mirage is a gorgeous slice of motorik smoothness, letting sustained guitar nights ring out over a tender throb of bass. "Suni Aki" is a more dramatic piece with a healthy dose of 80s bombast poured over its loins, and then Soft Rocks grapples the B side for a remix of "The Mirage" that cuts the tow line and drifts off in the direction of the sunset.

Review: Dave Aju, Alland Byallo, Kenneth Scott and Marc Smith joined together as KAMM, resulting in a mini-album called Kick Drunk Love for marcel Vogel's Amsterdam based label Intimate Friends.iDescribed in a press release as being influenced by the artists' "love of early '90s MoWax era laid-back beats," it features Barrite on lead vocals (with Byallo and Scott also contributing vocals), Smith on guitar, Byallo on trumpet and Scott on Moog synth. There's a couple guest appearances as well: Damian Schwartz plays some bass on "Sidewalks" and Eureka provides "a hell of a [vacuum] rev" on "Stage Left."

  3. Choose Your Colour Gipsy Dark (Mehmet Aslan remix) (8:49)
Review: Fleeting Wax hits its third release with this bout of sinister, sleek disco for the darker dancefloor that finds Bucharest-based duo Valeriu Borcos and Eduard Gabia getting remixed from a strong cast of characters. The ever prolific Khidja is up first, turning "Choose Your Colour Gypsy Dark" into a brooding, almost-rocking affair with an irresistible noirish tint to it. The label heads then get busy with a version that ups the arpeggios in a nod to Italo amidst plenty of dubby FX, before Mehmet Aslan stretches out across the B-side with a more yearning version that lets a little light in on the situation. It's a diverse, potent bag of versions that do credit to the original while saying something new as well.
