  1. Iron Curtis - "Daniel"
  2. Moomin - "I Whisper A Prayer"
  3. Jacques Bon - "Tribute To You"
  4. Rvds & Rau - "Umbe Data"
Review: The latest transmission from the luxuriant world of Smallville is a various artists collection that continues to weave elegiac tales via deep house means. Iron Curtis is up first with some plaintive acid in the form of "Daniel", which works pads and tender beats around the heartfelt squelch with grace. Moomin is a little more prominent in the beat department for "I Whisper A Prayer", while also feeding a hint of disco romance into a slow and simmering cut. Jacques Bon has his own acid tale to tell, and does so with a bigger nod to the jack but still keeping things respectable given the surroundings, leaving it to Rvds & Rau to happily float off on a buoyant throwdown in "Umbe Data", all positive chords and hopeful strings over a simple beat to show it's not all mournful in Hamburg.

  1. A Bar Called Shipwreck (Zaq vocal mix) (6:30)
  2. A Bar Called Shipwreck (Zaq Holy Communion mix) (6:59)
Review: It's been a long time between drinks for Isiguide, the label set up in 2016 to showcase the remix work of Greek producer Zak Famellos AKA Zaq. Predictably, he's at the controls again on the belated second label release. "A Bar Called Shipwreck" appears to be remix/re-make of a dewy-eyed old Greek record. The A-side version is wonderfully starry and Balearic, with vintage Grecian vocals, jaunty synthesizer melodies and jangling acoustic guitars riding above an analogue acid bassline and sparse, dubbed-out machine drums. Flip for the "Holy Communion Mix", a kind of acid-fired electronic reggae interpretation that's as Balearic as Alfredo, stunning sunsets and having to pay 15 quid for a beer.

  1. Get Your Own (3:47)
  2. J Zimbra (4:09)
Review: Those who remember the first wave of funk breaks mash-ups and floor-filling hip-hop cut-ups in the late 1990s should be aware of J-Large; the mysterious DJ/producer has been remixing and reworking tracks (most notably by the Herbaliser) on and off ever since. His latest 7" escapade is suitably sizable, with A-side "Get Your Own" fusing Christina Aguilera's best-known vocal with loops and grooves lifted from a certain horn-toting jazz disco-funk classic. On the flip you'll find "J Zimbra", a bustling and floor-friendly tool-up of heavyweight Afro-funk slammer from 1979. As you'd expect, both are guaranteed to get the party started... and then some.

  1. Felix Kubin - "Japan Japan" (J Rocc edit)
  2. Ohama - "The Drum" (J Rocc edit)
  3. Mark Lane - "Who's Really Listening" (J Rocc edit)
  4. Deux - "Game & Performance" (J Rocc edit)
Review: J Rocc steps up for the second and final installment of his Minimal Wave Tapes Edits, once again appearing on weighty vinyl and offering solitude for those DJs out there whose attempts to drop the likes of Ohama and Deux are frustrated by the inherent lack of quantized drum programming. J Rocc's edit of Felix Kubin's "Japan Japan" is a case in point, originally featuring on the recent second volume of The Minimal Wave Tapes, the rolling 4x4 electro groove that filled the opening bars soon mutated rhythmically into bastard vocoder pop. J Rocc wisely extends this opening loop before switching into the madness and then smoothing back into that groove. From here, J Rocc adds some extra weight to the titular elements of Ohama's "The Drum", teases out the inner uneasy primal techno workings of "Who's Really Listening?" from Mark Lane and f*cks about with Deux's "Game & Performance" brilliantly.

  1. Robot Jam (part 1) (6:43)
  2. Robot Jam (part 2) (5:29)
  3. Robot Jam (Nick The Record & Dan Tyler rerub) (8:24)
Review: REPRESS ALERT! If you read interviews with Stuart Leath, you'll probably be aware of the amount of work he was put into tracking down Trinidadian husband-and-wife team Carl and Carol Jacobs. Some 24 months later, the fruits of his efforts have materialized in this superb reissue of their obscure (and ludicrously hard to find) 1986 electro-calypso gem "Robot Jam". It's one of those records that shouldn't work - it's effectively a fusion of replayed and re-sung bits from records by Santana, Rock Master Scott and Rappin' Duke - but still sounds brilliantly futuristic nearly 30 years after its' initial release. The two-part original is joined on the flip by a brilliantly fitting, echo-laden "re-rub" from Nick The Record and Dan Tyler, better known as one half of the Idjut Boys.

  3. Yonge Street Jam Band (Jonny 5 Discomix) (8:58)
Review: Forever faithfully mining the past to keep your shelves stocked with gems that might have otherwise been consigned to history, Emotional Rescue turn their attention towards Carl & Carol Jacobs' cult slice of early house music, and what a treat it is. "Yonge Street Jam Band" comes in the form of two mixes that serve as impeccable examples of late 80s club music in all its culture spanning glory. The playful sample slicing and triggering of the second mix is the winner, although the vocals on the original version are equally on point if you want a little more soul in the mix. Jonny 5 then steps up on the flip for a bold but measured re-rub that stretches the vibe out for nine minutes of perfect party fodder.

  1. Don't You Want My Love (7:51)
  2. Don't You Want My Love (Dimitri From Paris Classic re-edit) (6:17)
Review: During her heyday in the late 1970s and early '80s, disco chanteuse Debbie Jacobs released some killer material (see "High on Your Love" and "Undercover Lover", for starters). "Don't You Want My Love", an energy-packed, orchestral disco smasher originally released in 1979 to promote the singer's debut album, is also up there with the best of her output. Here, the Paul Sabu produced original version gets the reissue treatment by Defected offshoot Glitterbox. Sabu's original club-length version sits astride the A-side, with Dimitri From Paris providing a "classic re-edit" on the flipside. His version sticks fairly close to the original, offering necessary nips and tucks here and there whilst steering clear of contemporary production trickery. Naturally, it's a rock solid rework from a true master of the scalpel rearrangement.

  1. Take Time (vocal) (4:40)
  2. Take Time (extended) (6:14)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Once more scouring the annals of disco history for the hottest jams, Best look beyond Italy and snap up this much-vaunted slice of American funk from 1982. While second hand prices can get out of control, it's not hard to hear why this glittering prize from Jagg would be so coveted - it's got everything. Jazz-leaning slap bass, mean synthesizer chops and soaring vocals - "Take Time" is prime to set the party off, and no longer is it the preserve of wealthy collectors. Originally a single-sided affair, Best have done the right thing and filled the B-side up with an extended version to let that groove roll on even longer.

  2. Give Me A Reason (Michael Mayer Does The Amoeba remix) (6:54)
  3. Give Me A Reason (Weatherall Meets Jonnie Two Heaters Uptown - part 1) (9:42)
Review: After Australian band Jagwar Mar released their album entitled Every Now & Then in 2016, they now appear with an accompanying remix release for their fans. Under the direction of mastermind Jono Mar, the album was created after three years of intense worldwide touring, supporting such bands as The XX, Foals and Tame Impala. It fulfilled all the expectations of their 2013 debut Howlin'. "Ordinary" (Rebolledo Very Ordinary cut) is far from the description: this one's a great shuffling little number, with no shortage of laser zaps. "Give Me A Reason" (Michael Mayer Does The Amoeba remix) is without a doubt the real winner on here, where the Kompakt main man serves up another sublime and emotive exercise in life affirming dancefloor drama. On the flip, "Give Me A Reason" (Weatherall Meets Jonnie Two Heaters Uptown - part 1) sees the UK dance veteran deliver a lo-slung and definitely slo-mo take on acid-indie dance, as best as you'd expect from the man.

Those selectors out there without the means to play tapes in a club setting will no doubt be very thankful to PPU for this 12" that brings together some unreleased demo cuts from Jahari along with a newly remastered version of the superb title track from that cassette. So up top you get two alternate takes on "Fire & Desire" with the studio version a real funk gem, whilst "Situations" sounds all the more sweet and soulful in newly remastered form.

Cat: 326 002. Rel: 20 Dec 16
  1. Acid Whump (6:09)
  2. Bostitch Time (8:33)
Review: Chicago batboy Jamie 3:26 is one of the few Windy City producers who is still waving his city's flag up high; alongside other house and techno artists like Hieroglyphic Being, they are defining the Chicago sound of today. This particular producer's style is suave and supremely sleek in its execution, a quality that is clearly audible from this second instalment of Basement Edits. The first, "Acid Whump" couldn't be from anywhere else and, although the UK also has a long tradition of heavy acid house, this particular tune sounds like it really is from the source of it all. "Bostitch Time", on the other hand, is more leftfield in all senses; there's a jazzy percussive beat pushing it forwards, but the track's sonic coating is filled with strange and wonderful synth sounds that render it something of a misnomer. Excellent cuts.

  2. Sameed - "Can't U" (4:43)
  3. Sameed - "Dusty Jazz" (Late Night edit) (5:56)
Review: The latest missive from Sweden's fine Local Talk label is a multi-artist affair, with fine contributions from label regular Sameed, Chicago legend Jamie 3:26, and rising star Masalo. The latter two join forces on fabulous A-side "Testify", a low-slung, disco-tinged deep house bomb built around righteous rhythms, impassioned, gospel-influenced blues vocals, and killer Clavinet parts. On the flip, Sameed's first contribution is a riff on the same basic cut, utilizing the same samples but venturing further towards dirty, late night disco territory. He also provides a fine bonus in the shape of "Dusty Jazz", a sample-heavy jazz-house workout complete with wavering horns, rich bass and twinkling electric piano solos.

  5. Neo Experience - "Human" (3:26)
Review: As with its' 12 predecessors, the latest compilation style EP from publicity-shy French diggers Unlimited Love gathers together an impressive selection of sought-after gems. This time round, many of the cuts are taken from eye-wateringly expensive and hard-to-find private press records. Check, for example, the fizzing 1982 boogie of Jeancy's "Reservation", the sweet breeziness of Karizma's "Will You Dance With Me" (an original 7" copy of which would set you back around L300) and the skewed, orchestra-smothered quirkiness of Marion Javius's "Waiting in the Wings". Elsewhere, Makonde's "Manzara" is a heavy chunk of psychedelic-minded Afro-funk, while Neo Experience's sumptuous "Human" is a lesser-known chunk of Philly soul bliss.

Review: Classic freestyle vibes from 1985: original copies of this on Nezz have been known to pass hands for over L100 but thankfully City Of Dreams have had the good grace to commission a reissue. The original has that raw honesty that many freestyle records are cherished for; the synths are loose, the mix isn't polished and Jennette's girl-next-door voice sounds real and untouched. The dub is special, too; a splice and diced 808 throwdown, it still sounds just as excitable and funky as it did 30 years ago.

  1. First Stomp (NYC dub) (8:20)
  2. First Stomp (vocal Up mix) (5:48)
Review: "First Stomp", a bubbly chunk of Clavinet-laden electrofunk/Balearic fusion with Latin influences and clear nods to proto-house, was one of the highlights of Jex Opolis's recent debut album, Ravines. Here it gets the remix treatment, with the producer himself delivering a pair of club-ready interpretations. On the A-side you'll find the dreamy but club-ready "NYC Dub", a swirling, dreamy and loved-up affair that makes greater use of the original's Latin chants as well as some fresh new cowbell rhythms. The B-side "Vocal UP Mix" is an altogether more radical transition, with Jex Opolis re-imagining the cut as a cheery chunk of Puerto Rican proto-house complete with Latin piano riffs and locked-in drum machine percussion.

Review: New York's JKRIV is shaping up to be something of a nu-disco revelation, particularly for his love for all things 'outernational'. In fact, then DJ-producer has released nothing but hip-swinging Latin funk over the last few years, and this RSD 2018 release for Brooklyn's Razor-N-Tape, Ferias 77' Reworks, is testament to that. In here, you'll find nothing but sick reinterpretations of classic Brazilian funk and disco, re-moulded to fit the modern ear and, of course, the modern sound-systems. Subtle swings of boogie-filtered disco, deep and sensual house, and a whole load of trippy-hop make this a blazing summer belter, and there's even a slow, Balearic rework of Edu Lobo's infamous "Ponteio".

This time around it's over to New York City's Jason Kriveloff aka Jkriv, who works that magic razor once again on these wonderful re-edits. Review: Given the talent on display, you'd expect this second Editor's Kutz #5 12" to be rather good. It is, of course, with all four tracks hitting the mark. J Kriv steps up first, layering sweet strings, blissful guitar solos and sparkling synthesizers over a beefed-up jazz-funk groove. Riccio weighs in with the similarly hazy, stoner rock era blue-eyed soul revision "Space Traveller", before The Noodleman loops up acoustic guitars, baggy vocals and twittering flute solos on his house-not-house take on "Baby Doll". Finally, Amsterdam-based bad man Marcel Vogel dons his EmVee guise to drop a heavy chunk of stripped-back, sax-laden disco-house in the shape of EP highlight "Dance The Blues Away".

Review: New 45s label from France drops this tasty little funky disco/boogie 7 inch. ''More Spell On You'' was sampled and used in Daft Punk's legendary "One More Time" whilst George Duke's "I Love You More" intro was also used by the Tron scoring Robot duo on "Digital Love".

  1. Better Than This (Frankie Knuckles Director's Cut classic soul mix)
  2. Better Than This (Soul Talk mix)
  3. Better Than This (Dego & Kaidi mix)
  4. Better Than This
Review: Paul Johnson - not to be confused with his Dance Mania namesake - is a British vocalist known for his work with '80s gospel group Paradise. A special numbered version of this record was released for Record Store Day this year, but if you missed out on that, or don't want any of the bells and whistles, here's the OG. And what soulful house artist could be better to remix such a track than Frankie Knuckles, who does so with a classic cut of heavenly house music like only he can, while the Soul Talk mix is down beat and sultry, oozing the same type of emotion you'd hear from Marvin Gaye. Meanwhile Dego & Kaidi open up the B-side with a stripped back, but still very musical version of "Better Than This", while Osiki Ojo really works the oohs and ahhs in their mix. Only happiness and love on this record.
